What's the point if only 64 has got real mods and cool shit? They where memeing about ocarina and yet no custom dungeons or mechanics where made
The OOT decomp has already led to advancements in modding. There's a couple custom dungeons floating around, and I'm pretty sure the guy behind Indigo has been making use of it.
The OOT PC port, on the other hand, still hasn't progressed past basic sound and texture replacement. And they don't give updates on how major updates are going anymore because...it would pressure the devs to...uh...uhhh...
Just wait for them to put up a Patreon and start drip feeding content
There's a mod called ttyd64 and it's Paper Mario 64 with TTYD's battle system/badges and added content. Coming out this year. You don't get updated graphics but who cares

Chapter 6 is shit.
Lakilester is shit mechanically and all partners except Bow and Goombario get 0 development/dialog
While I understand that they took the paper gimmick TOO far in later entries, this one is decidedly not enough paper. It's like they just realized their 2d aesthetic happened to look kinda like paper so they slapped the name on there.
Sushie probably molested at least one baby Yoshi.
But that's the point tho, it's just an Aesthetic choice. The paper thing only became a gimmick starting in TTYD and then went full on "LOL WE'RE MADE OF PAPER" for the Nu Trilogy. It was never intended to be a part of the gameplay mechanics or anything, just a visual charm to differentiate itself from other games
Why do people hate chapter 6?
I don't hate it, but the whole Flower Fields scenario should've be shorter and cloudtop could take more time to exploration before the boss.
I've read many people absolutely seething about the fact that there is a crossroads in the middle so you have to keep ''backtracking'' in order to pass the color/flower puzzles.
The setting was definitely among the best for me though.
I love chapter 6, I'll never understand people. The ONLY section of the game that slightly annoys me is chapter 5 finding the Yoshi kids. Even then, it's only like 15 minutes.

I haven't played SPM since launch and can barely remember a thing about it, but I do remember enjoying it

Pit was just an example. One optional hard dungeon would be fine so people could've experiment badge combos.
I tried replaying this recently and I forgot how much walking around and backtracking there is, especially when it comes to that flaming gay of koopa koot, so no, paper Mario ain't no perfect game

One small nitpick I have is that PM64 keeps track of how many unique recipes you've made, but doesn't tell you which ones like in the next two games, so you have to keep a checklist yourself if you're going for 100% completion.
How good is the Master Quest mod?
Master Quest is way too demanding. You have to land frame perfect hits on pretty much every boss, and know the meta of which items to use on exactly which turn, otherwise you die.
Now, Master Quest JR is the one I'd recommend. It has the content of Master Quest, but tones down the speedrunning minmax autism. It's up to you which one sounds better. I prefer JR personally because it's so interesting seeing all the things that they balanced and modified. Best part is that the game's higher difficulty isn't because of bloating enemy damage or giving them extra health. They actually modify the enemy AI and their actions so that the game has more bite to it.
Oh okay yeah Master Quest Jr is the one I'll check out then.
By the way, I recommend being careful if you use anything besides Project 64. The game sometimes has issues if running on parallel or mupen (though I only tested it on the libretro cores via retroarch. Standalone Mupen probably fares better).

everything post ch6 is retarded, and arguably a lot before it is also really bad and stifling gameplay-wise.
It still provided a much needed challenge that the game desperately begs for.

the ""gimmick"" was playing the game in 3D environments, which is how you played the previous entries
the platforming was also extremely boring
the story and characters were basically from another IP entirely, and Mario characters were sewn into the whole thing just to make the game sell.
it doesn't surprise me one bit that this was Tanabe's first job as a producer with the PM series, it reeks of him.
Who was in charge of the PM games before Tanabe, and why on earth did they allow him to meddle with the series

story is really boring too outside of the 10 minutes you're doing a penguin murder mystery, people talk about mario mandate shit with this series all the time but paper marios story is the most generic and safe rpg writing in the world and is sandwhiched by SMRPG and superstar sage in terms of release dates which run circles around it
its comfy and theres some decent bits of individaul character writing but the overal game is very simplistic even by bing bing standards
the n64 being overate on the internet by people who are now over 30 years old has been a disaster for gaming discourse
