A game can be perfect while still having flaws, it just depends on what really matters to you

      Anonymous

      A perfectly flawed game.
For example, a game with a bunch of bugs that don't impact gameplay but are objectively funny, like models randomly stretching, is not perfect by definition as it contains flaws. But it IS perfect in so far as those flaws are not flaws, they are unexpected sources of entertainment, which only adds to the game overall.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't strive to have a game be as perfect as possible, you can't predict in advance if a flaw is going to be good or not.

Depends. The definition of perfect is fairly arbitrary. But one of the most imperfect games I've ever played is a top 5 game of mine. And a game id call "perfect" (and by that, I essentially just mean "pretty straightforward and unobtrusive) is one I eventually became bored of because it was simply too repetitive after a point that it felt like going through the motions. That game was Dead Space 2 btw.

as if "perfect" he means balanced then yes i agree. games are meant to be imbalanced be weird characters with heavy flaws side effects sometimes being a little too strong or a little too week. if the characters play all the same, have all similiar strenghts and the different maps abilities etc in the end are strong the same way it's just not fun

The biggest flaws for both DD2 and DP2 are technical. So the video's probably about "uhmmm stop complaining about bad performance? jank is le soul".

That's a stupid clickbait way of putting it, but I do agree that games with frick ups tend to be more fun than games that have been polished to the point of having no points that stand out.
Pic is factually a less "perfect" game than say TLOU2, but many will still prefer pic due to the crazy shit you can pull off in it due to the game's imperfections.

  11. 2 weeks ago

I don't even know what that means

  12. 2 weeks ago

It's impossible to conceive of a "perfect" game, not only because tastes differ but because individual components of a game can only be judged in contextual relation to all other components to create something greater than the sum of its parts. So they may teach the "correct" design principles on individual things like UI, map design, etc., but if you just throw a bunch of those things together without a coherent, unified vision, it will just feel like much of the slop we've gotten over the last decade. So overall, yes, I agree. However, that's not an excuse to not sand down obvious flaws with your game before release.

I think I agree with the sentiment, but I haven't watched the video so I don't really know what he's talking about.
Recently, I've come to the conclusion that "clunkiness" is a good thing actually. Tomb Raider and Resident Evil with "modern controls" is a much smoother play experience, but for some reason the more limited tank controls are just more fun.

Silent Hill 2 is the posterchild for this.
People praise that game's gameplay because the combat feels like shit, and the main worry I see about the remake is that they're going to "fix" it.

Perfect games are boring because to achieve perfection as a game, you need to cut down the fat as much as possible and focus entirely on only one thing, making the game have no depth.
Portal, Journey, SotC. These are good games I'd call perfect, but they are also boring.

Games should be perfect if possible. No, bugs and flaws don't make a game better. Not going to watch your ChatGPT video essay.

  21. 2 weeks ago

Games can sometimes be charming or a cult classic if they are obviously cheap, low budget and held together by the devs' prayer alone, but you should expect a high level of polish from a videogame being sold to you for $70.

  22. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Not every decision in game development is quantifiable, so perfection isn't technically possible...
BUT a lot of decisions CAN be quantified and broken down and approached from a vaguely objective viewpoint, so subjectivity isn't an excuse to not try your best.

  23. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Depends what they mean by "perfect"
If they mean "perfect" as in the soulless slop that is being churned out optimised for mass appeal, yes. "perfect" games are boring. appealing to everyone is very appealing to noone. you get a forgettable average game among the thousands of forgettable average games that tried to do the same exact thing. the only people that is "perfect" for are the publishers.

If they mean "perfect" as in a game with no major flaws or lacking aspects, no.

Given how nearly all of my favorite vidya is shitty jank, I like this sentence. I guess every minute devs spend on polishing the game is not a minute spent on making it fundamentally better, every 20th game in series of some stale AAA like ubisoft games would benefit from properly reinventing the core of the game on fresh basic rules instead of trying to make it more stable, or enchancing it with new shitty gimmick built on top of existing game logic
