Humanity would be lobotomized of any thoughts that aren't happiness, therefore no world end. And that's a good thing as it's all in best intentions.

Nobody would be wishing for death if they were all happy, so it would be fine for Door Kun to be unlocked.

The collective desire for death is down to the base most instincts of all life, lobotomizing everyone will unironically speed up the process by tenfold.

It's quite literally how the fricking world works in Persona 3. There is an intrinsic link to Nyx that makes all life desire death in a way that outright defies logic and works much deeper than the psyche itself reaches. This is why Nyx cannot be killed or destroyed, and why Erebus will always return. It's a foregone conclusion that's delayed as many times as it takes because logic and reasoning is what helps defy and prevent that most basic instinct brought about by the connection to Nyx's own psyche. It doesn't work like it does here in the real world. Apathy syndrome is extremely dangerous because without a fricking mind, all that's left is the most basic desire--death. Ikutski wanted to speed things along even further than it was already going. Maruki would single-handedly undo everyone's work and bring back Erebus in record time if the entire world just suddenly one day got icepicked in the frontal lobe.

i can't really prove you wrong, it's been far too long, but this is definitely overthinking the "collective desire for death" bit
it's just association with DEATH IS INEVITABLE theme as to why nyx can't be fully defeated, and why minato has to pull a jesus
in contrast to more vague and abstract concepts of collective IGNORANCE and CONTROL from later games whch end with a happily ever after
also answer fricking sucks please purge it from your mind, it's awful that anybody has to consider it for any reason

Anon this thread has already touched how genuinely deeply woven the narrative is with Jungian aspects and theories and this revelation is quite literally one of the biggest plot points in the base game.

                Anonymous

sounds like pure drivel honestly, especially if you intent on interpreting every detail by comparision to jung's works (does that mean that every post-p2 party member is a clinical moron, only able to maintain a single persona? the answer is yes, they are all jrpg archetypes after all)
too much analyzing for my taste, but even if you are 100% right on the nyx instinct thing, it opens up a massive can of worms as to how the world makes sense at all
                >at what point of sentience is connection to nyx made?
                >is it just humans?
                >why are apathy sufferrers still living (breathing/standing/talking) if brain damage means WANT DEATH is the biggest concern?
                >is nyx a distinct entity from before human collective unconsciousness?
                >if so then how did she appear before humans?
                >if not then why brain damage gives more influence to nyx
persona games are more *thematic* rather than *technical* so while you could rationalize all of this nonsense, i prefer to say THEME OF DEATH and details are excused with magic

It’s not like the MC was fricking around in the crime scene or in police affairs directly. The only link that Dojima could see was between the MC and people who went missing. But the missing peoples cases weren’t even necessary related to the murders. So what really could he even confront the MC before the letter?

because if he removed that sort of propulsionary spark from everyone else in the world, he's kicking the ladder to progress down, Maruki's world will stagnate, nothing will change, because change is scary, too scary for those unprepared for it, like the world population once Maruki's fricking lobotomized them.

if Maruki never suffered, he would never have attempted his research in the first place, so what happens to the next 'Maruki' in Maruki's own world? that inciting incident is removed from their conciousness and they settle into stagnant, mediocre happiness.

Not really. Overcoming Death means *not* falling for her, if you want to go by the terms of that meta.

Though actually, that turn of phrase

          [...]

used in the game is a rather clever thing.
Death - the final 'normal' card of the tarot represents externally enacted change; undeniable and irreversible. (Hence represented by Death.) The Fool represents unwritten potential and through 'interacting with all the numbers', i.e. the other facets of the tarot, when it eventually reaches Death it has unlocked that potential and has gained the strength of character to overcome Death - i.e. to defy the change that fate has laid out for them and to take matters into their own hands. The mark of the World: mastery over one's destiny.

That's the whole point. Maruki's world is entirely impossible because a world without suffering is one where the human soul feels only suffering, because the pleasure becomes numbing.

Mankind, in a world where you only need to chase your bliss and whittle the moments away with the productions of time, would find the sharpest object in the room, to stab themself in the leg just to feel something real.

Maruki's world will always fail because he envisions a world where no one has to suffer, instead of a world where everyone has the strength to overcome their suffering.

Yeah this flowery speech about passion and struggle works in Chinese cartoons and games because you struggle for things like conquest, mastering sorcery, slaying dragons, and apotheosis. I'll gladly take false bliss over whatever useless mundane fruits of labor real life has available. There is no such thing as an afterlife. The "afterlife" is the same nonexistence as the beforelife. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a total reset and you "revive" elsewhere in the universe as a completely different "self" with not a shred of your past life carrying over. As with my life now, the happiness of others means a lot to me, so I want my future lives to be happy. Therefore, I think I'm allowed to ask that I'm happy too.

Speaking of, if humanity as a whole only live in cooperation with each other with no ill will, does that mean Nyarlathotep would just not exist? If Maruki's reality is crystalized, then there shouldn't be any subconscious feelings that could be part of a Shadow.

if they were truly alive and not illusions, they wouldn't go away once the illusion shatters.

it doesn't matter how realistic they might be, a lie will remain a lie. Maruki's world is 'perception is reality', they were only 'alive' because people thought they were alive.

No, they were literally alive, with their own feelings and personalities which there's no way Maruki could have recreated, it's the only reason why Akechi even wants to frick up his world

            Anonymous

The people that died are dead. What's left is only the cognition of the people who are alive. Okumura is dead, but the memory (or rather, the ideal Okumura) lives on to comfort Haru.

How insulting is that? That someone would reanimate someone who you loved without any of their flaws. You're essentially choosing someone else over your own father. You're removing any sort of agency he had and reanimating a phony in his place. Basically everyone gets to live their own little "happily ever after" and never acknowledge or show any reverence for the people who've died. A life of absolute inertia and stagnation. Frick that.

That's also kind of bullshit. They were revived with the personalities THEY fondly remembered or wanted them to be like. Wakaba was very explicitly engrossed in her work, and Haru's dad was very much implied to have been progressively getting worse for years. None of that is present in them, they're idealized versions brought back by how Haru and Futaba wanted to remember them, not what they were actually like. Maruki's powers don't grant him omniscience, just knowledge of people's thoughts. They are not the people who died.

Wasn't his answer same as shota's, which is why he accepted him? Birds fly, because bird that doesn't fly isnt bird at all, use your wings and soar high. I guess it's supposed to be something about using your potential and stop sitting on your ass. Also it's implied his answer changed after losing Velvet's sister or at least that he gave it a more sinister/cynical spin.

That was Velvet's. I don't remember if he did give his answer at all. I know that in the end the JRPG writers couldn't deliver on the concept they were trying to sell this game on, and made the antagonist a villain (those two concepts are not necessarily the same).

It was to embrace the sky?

I think it's funny that even with the in general lower quality of writing in strikers konoe was a better 'villain' since he had the same motivations and goals but was just an butthole about it and had the one big flaw of 'fricked up akane' like how in LJ they just brought up that he got sawa killed

The only truly dumb scene in the game was PTs forgiving Akechi after his boss fight. They do a very sudden 180 and even those whose parents he murdered in cold blood suddenly start rationalizing his actions and going "you were simply wronged by the shitty adults just like us". That was when the game went full moron, just like that one scene in Tales of Arise.

But okay, Akechi dies off screen right after this exchange so it doesn't fricking matter. Except Atlus figured they need to prostitute out the game one more time and Royal happened and made the Akechi thing even more moronic.

Don’t have the image saved but there’s a little bit of a connection between Maruki and Konoe in Strikers both being granted their mind-altering powers by a higher being, and a Eden theme in the final dungeons of both games. Could mean something, but tbh we probably won’t get any more P5 spin-offs at this point, and it would be really surprising if P5S and P5R actually coordinated their writing in that way, because otherwise they feel totally independent of eachother.

        >but tbh we probably won’t get any more P5 spin-offs at this point
There's like 3 domains for P5 they still keep renewing. P5B.jp, P5M.jp and P5U.jp (this one would be Arena.) And the "oh it's just auto-renewing old unused shit" excuse doesn't work anymore because they let a lot of unused ones lapse, like P5AG.jp for example. That means they've gone out of their way to keep these ones. That said a plot thread like this wouldn't even necessarily need to be continued in P5.

That should've happened in Royal with the Axathoth reveal. Such a wasted opportunity. We could've finally had the next Nyarly.

It wasn't really a reveal in P1 either, Nyarlathotep's apparent involvement in the plot as of P1 was just being Kandori's persona, it wasn't until P2 where it was revealed to be more than that.

Yeah, I actually thought about the persona possession thing. And it almost always happens with "granted" personas, like it happened with Jun in P2 as well, it also kind of happened with Adachi and Namatame (according to Izanami she granted Namatame power but he failed to awaken it meaning he probably would have an Izanagi if he wasn't so deluded.) Like they give them a slice of power and then when they're in a moment of weakness they can take control, so that's pretty fishy for Azathoth.

He won't be mentioned in the next game homie. I'm surprised they even had the very few references to 4 that they did.

Adachi returned, even Ikutsuki was shown in Ultimax. Also Persona is in different hands now, Hashino is the one who was all in on making everything self contained and he's not working on persona anymore, the guy in charge of persona now is Wada who was behind the Arena games which were a lot more indulgent when it came to crossover stuff. Like P5R is obviously setting shit up pretty clearly

      Anonymous

The masks are not about control, but the false/true facade you use because you >live in a society, etc. But yeah, it's kind of odd, summoning a persona without ripping off the mask, since it's the mechanic in this game. Just like evoker/cards in P4.
Persona MCs and party members call out to their personae al the time though, so it's nothing odd.

What you failed to mention, and what I think is far more important is the fact that persona users are not supposed to HAVE PALACES at all. Palaces are tied to persona awakenings in 5, in the same way shadows are in P4 - once you awaken to your persona - you're no longer supposed to have a shadow/palace.

This all might just be sloppy writing by the Royal team though.

        Anonymous

        >The masks are not about control, but the false/true facade you use because you >live in a society, etc.
Anon, I'm not just pulling this out of my ass, Persona is based on jungian themes, this is the jungian perspective. And I'll break it down bit by bit for you
        >For Jung, "the danger is that people become identical with their personas—the professor with his textbook, the tenor with his voice."The result could be "the shallow, brittle, conformist kind of personality which is 'all persona', with its excessive concern for 'what people think'"—an unreflecting state of mind "in which people are utterly unconscious of any distinction between themselves and the world in which they live. They have little or no concept of themselves as beings distinct from what society expects of them."
So the masks represent the jungian persona, that's what persona means, and the point at which it's stuck to the face represents this point specifically (Jung calls this stage Identification), their self identifies with the persona but their persona is heavily influenced by the people around them and above them and that's why it's stuck to their face, because there's little distinction between the two (the self and the persona) at that point. Ripping off the mask represents the steps towards individuation, it's why they still inhabit a lot of the same social roles they did before, like Makoto is still the class president and all that but the difference is that it's not really something they let sway them anymore, because they recognise the distinction between the persona and the self, that's what it means in battle when they summon their persona's by taking off the mask, it's exhibiting the fact that they recognise that distinction between the mask and the self, and it's showing it's not persona ruling them, it's them who rules the persona. That's what mean I say control, and I'm saying Maruki does not exhibit this.

This isn't really important. Maruki basically willed his palace into existence, note that he doesn't have a Shadow. Every time you see him in the palace is his actual self. He was also maintaing the Metaverse himself, it was supposed to have disappeared.

Sometimes it blows my mind when I remember Persona actually kinda is meant to be dissected thoroughly, it just requires background knowledge on shit 99% of players would never know about in order to fully appreciate.

They didn't. Last Surprise is still the battle theme in Royal. Take Over exclusively plays when you attack a shadow from behind... Which is about 99.9% of the time.

I mean they did the same thing with 4 where they added a new battle track, only in 4 the ambush music was reach out to the truth and make history was the normal battle music. Plus I didn't get ambushes as consistently in 4 compared to 5 so I got to enjoy both a bit more while Take Over basically completely replaced Last Surprise.
I like Take Over more then Time to Make History but it still cucks Last Surprise which is lame.

It still plays enough times to be noticed by players. A lot of fights are forced to not be ambushes, and every player slips up sooner or later, especially early on.

That's the thing, it's just HIS interpretation of the best outcome and most ideal reality. If he's partial to Sumire because she was his patient and he witnessed firsthand her suffering, then he's likely to favor her in his world.
Doesn't matter that he's crushing somebody else's dream in the process

He only removes your suffering. If you can handle losing like an adult like most people can then you just continue being disappointed.
I think people have misunderstood "suffering" to mean "a minor inconvenience" rather than actual full-blown real homie suffering like the borderline suicidal that Sumire was, the actually suicidal NEETgod that Futaba was or I suppose Haru sorta kinda with her father.

Part of that is addressed in his personality quiz. Those that can't seem to achieve their goal should switch to different aspirations. Talking to some of the students at the school I remember one who's no longer interested in being one of the top players and is happy to be a bench warmer.
Said shift could either be a harsh one, such as giving up the sport for a non competitive aspiration, or perhaps more minor as switching someone from wanting to be the best to being one of the best or simply exemplary.

I personally feel that since the whole thing is limited to a JRPG you have to stick to a binary option. Maruki knows his plan has flaws. He admits to it at one point, so its feasible to think he might refine his ideas or compromise with others. He seems to respect Joker's viewpoint to a degree. But since its a video game Joker, Maruki and the others can't exactly come together and spend a few weeks trying to try and hash out a better option.

      >What does he do to people with competing dreams?
In Maruki's world, the one who would be hurt the most by not getting the gold medal would be the one to get it. Everyone's cognition would be changed to view the winner as having performed the best. Everyone else who wanted it would get hurt less but they would be brainwashed to want something else and pursue that instead. It's forced cope for all the losers in the world, and Maruki doesn't actually care if someone succeeds by their own merit as long as they are not hurt by it.

People like that are a fricking relic, like it kind of made sense when Royal was PS4 exclusive while you could emulate the original, but that whole sour grapes motivation is gone now that its ported to everything. There is one interesting strain of people I've seen though, it's certain types of Makotogays who like her because she was the girl who was seemingly the most pushed in the original version of P5, only for P5R to come along and add another girl who's pushed even more, so their response is to seethe at Royal and try to deny it in every way possible, such as insisting that it's non canon. I've played a little game where you go on reddit and find someone seething about Royal and click on their profile and a lot of the time and you'll often see that their dedicated /r/churchofmakoto posters, like fricking clockwork.

I always felt the biggest disconnect between them for me is Yosuke in 4. Most of his social link is him trying to pretend he's fine about being stuck in some shitty town and his waifu being murdered (and finding out she hated him) with the only good things being having a friend in the player and getting to feel special because of his persona and what it let's you do. Then half the time he talks in the game he's just acting like a moronic coomer, sperging out at someone, acting like Kanji will rape him and causing bad situations to happen to the player and Kanji, like getting forced into a crossdressing contest as revenge for signing the girls up to a beauty contest without their knowledge.

There are a few confidants like Sojiro, Akechi, and Maruki where new ranks only unlock after certain points in the story, but that makes it even more of a b***h to manage and is more restrictive.
I have complex feelings on the calendar system. In its current state, it's really showing its limitations and kills pacing, but I love it as a gameplay loop and would like to see it continue being improved upon instead of dropped for something that will naturally be less refined.

I'll never understand big bads being bad because they'll make a literal utopia out of the world. But it's a much more compelling ending than the original. If you want to get the true ending, you have to bring down Maruki's fake world. The fact that they don't dress up accepting his offer as a bad ending just makes it that much better. Everything is beautiful, you get to stay with your friends, big dick Maruki walks off into the sunset, pure kino

      >velvet room
Usually it boils down to one or two lines of "I want to tell them, but it's weird", which is just completely fricking stupid considering everything else going on, AND in the PQ games you've got characters saying "oh it's those Velvet Room people the protagonists talked about" to really drive home how stupid things are
At least in The Answer SEES goes to the Velvet Room
      >wild card
You usually get a few lines at the start of the game with other characters commenting on how cool and mysterious that ability is, but nobody really speculates on it even though they probably should

Characters overexplaining things and social links meaning characters go underdeveloped is terrible writing, but for me the absolute worst of it is the fact that 99% of the time nobody really seems to care about the supernatural world they live in
Like yeah, being a high school student is busy work, but they have books about the main party personas in THE SHUJIN LIBRARY
TELL RYUJI TO READ THE PIRATE BOOK AND ASK HIS OPINION ON IT

There's often a moment where a character walks over to the protagonist and goes "you okay man? you were staring off into space, let's go" to imply that being in the VR room looks like you've fallen into a trance for a moment to everyone else

        >they have books about the main party personas in THE SHUJIN LIBRARY

          Anonymous

He doesn't act surprised when Akechi comments that his persona is based on a famous pirate, just that he thinks it's fitting for a guy like him.

          Anonymous

So he just yells "Captain Kidd!" for unrelated reasons? Or does Joker hear "Captain Kidd!" but Ryuji is actually shouting his own name?
And there's the Thieves Den conversations, though it's dubious how canon they are
And in P3 you have SEES briefly tell Door about their persona's names, strengths and weaknesses early on when they join SEES

Or the fact they know they're called personas at all. That's another weird thing with Maruki, the line where he's like "I believe you guys summon it like this. Persona!", like it's not something that came naturally to him and just something he observed. That's not normal

                Anonymous

Azathoth is more like an entity masquerading as a persona, similar to Nyarlathotep and Kandori, so he was never going to have a normal experience with it
But yeah, the terminology thing was always a bit weird, but I guess since Philemon is specifically Jung's Philemon, Jung had dibs on the nomenclature

                >these aren't my parents because... THEY JUST AREN'T OKAY?

                They aren't, yes

            Anonymous

Since everyone is a part of the collective unconscious, the names and abilities of personas probably come from there. The collective knows who Kidd is, and when Ryuji awakens to his persona, that information gets transferred to him. It's not as if the persona is completely new, it comes from the mythology of all humankind.

The issue I have with it is that while authenticity is important, it extends past the pure materialistic outlook that the audience and developers tend to have. Without a true understanding of something transcendental it's just stoics masochistically wanking themselves off about how
    >all harm and evil is actually totaaly blissful and good and you just like dont get it mannnnnnn

guess what jackass striving for the good is good. Shirou has a better reply to kotomine kirei in the Fate route about why undoing things isnt the same as righting them, i guess modern jrpgs cant reproduce something a porn game did decades ago
