It's never going to disappear forever. This stuff ebbs and flows. We are at a low point of piracy and it's mostly because games are so easily accessible and many of them are discounted or free if you have game pass. Eventually, when people begin to feel the squeeze and don't have as much disposable income, or the developers become too predatory (there's already a high demand for private servers for games like Genshin Impact). Then you will see a demand for piracy and believe me there is always someone to fill that demand.

As the customer, I hold all the cards. I decide which business practice I support, and which I do not. If a game has Denuvo, I'm not going to buy it. Simple as that. I just do not support what it has become. If the publisher doesn't like it, they can stop using it.

Some people don't know if they will like a game or not and would rather try it first instead of play the gambling game with Steam as to when they realize the game isn't worth their money.

Yeah, but since you pirated the game and lost them 1 sale, the publisher still didn't make any money off your later purchase 🙁

                Anonymous

I see your point and I think this is a common anecdote, but if the bean counters at the publishers actually had evidence that pirating ultimately increases sales they wouldn't spend millions on Denuvo license. Remember, they are operating on much more information than any of us are in regards to cost/benefit analysis when implementing DRM, etc

Nah, pirates is a good argument to explain disappointing sales, which a lot of AAA games suffer now considering their ridiculous costs and the stupidly high expectations of suits (particularly square and capcom). And playing this argument, you need some anti-pirate software to reassure the decision makers.

So why can't they make games with less photorealistic graphics and mocapped cutscenes, that are more iterative than reinventing the wheel each game?

Because suits are pretty sure that graphix, quips and action is what sell the most. Exactly as in the film industry.

And just like with the film industry you get diminishing returns everytime. I remember watching an interview with James Cameron where he was asked about his opinion on marvel films. I've never seen someone chortle with such disdain. He knows it's all shit. And now we see it clearly with Vfx artist bringing in lawsuits against Disney. The rumors of blacklisting artists who don't shit out crap for shitty pay. The 50% drop in ticket sales over the last 4 years years hasn't tipped you off? We're reaching critical mass with this graphixgay nonsense.

Cameron's Avatars are not much different from Marvel's copy-pasted movies though.

They thought they had the formula for infinite dough, but they don't understand that people got bored of the same shit after a while (and the COVID did not help). Nonetheless, the FIFA franchise shows that it might be slightly different for video games.
Also note that these risk adverse board executives like sequels, reboots and spin-offs much more than original IP, which is part of the current curse on video games and movies.

That's the thing. They don't have bean counters telling them it increases sales. If anything it decreases sales because of hardline "NEVER EVER" Anti-Denuvo people. It's just a solution for a bogeyman fabricated by faceless boardroom mooks. Scare them into thinking they will lose 5-10% of their sales to piracy and they will literally force the Developers under them to include it. But reality is it's like 1% of players that pirate a game and half of those were too poor to buy it while the other half won't even consider it now without a trial.

Denuvo is just a leech trying to make money off scaremongering contracts. Just look at them making Switch-Denuvo. Unsolicited anti-piracy that Nintendo isn't ever going to use. It's meant to scam second/third-party developers to sign contracts. Just like non-switch games. That's why it gets removed after a few years usually. Publisher doesn't want to pay the leech anymore for protection it was tricked into thinking it needed.

                >The same EU-commissioned study found one important exception to its findings: piracy of recent top box office hits. Pirated versions of ‘recent top films’ resulted in a displacement rate of 40 percent — for every ten blockbusters watched illegally, four fewer films were watched legally.
This is an important point that's often ignored, "does piracy hurt sales" isn't all black and white. The ones it hurts the most are big studios, while indies might even benefit more from the extra word-of-mouth marketing than they're missing out on lost sales.
Which means you should keep pirating to hurt the AAA industry as much as possible.

A lot of people like it, particularly since they fixed most of the bugs. It has good character building and interesting characters and stories. It's not a futuristic GTA though, so if you expected that you'd be disappointed.

Rise is worse than world which is worse than 4U. The only reason to ever play it would be the online scene being bigger.

          Anonymous

4U is better than World for sure, World is the worst "game" in the series because the cutscenes are unskipable and thus it is too much of a headache to make a new character and that means that there is a limited amount of hunting you can even do before you reach the end and have nothing left to grind. That is a travesty of design and really makes the game bad, just pure trash. At least with Rise you can make new characters and fly through the low ranks and start grinding again in no time. What is the reason for playing a game if you are just going to be maxed out in gear and skills? That is peak boredom and that is all World has to offer, boredom.

Does CDPR seem like they're doing poorly financially because of it?

Not advocating for or against, but the reality is piracy impacts profits FAR less than publishers would have you believe. It's something like 3% of all pirates account for 85% of all piracy.

Denuvo doesn't have to make a game uncrackable when 80% of a game's sales are in the first week and 90% the first month. If Denuvo delays the crack even a week it's done its job as far as developers are concerned.

      --------

It's not just that, disassembly is tedious and you can get more clout cracking software that is actually useful (unlike games). There are actually a lot of tutorials around on reverse engineering and I've found that it isn't all that difficult to get started.

Good. Pirates are leeches, and they're the reason shitty DRM exists. The only reasonable justification is when it's simply not feasible to acquire the product legally. Everything else is cope.

what IQ does it take to be able to crack games? what sort of stuff do you have to know about programming?

i'm just wondering how long it'd take someone who is new to programming to get to the point they could crack a denuvo game from 2018 or whenever.

      Anonymous

Depends on your dedication. Couple of years if you train daily.
Start with basics of programming, 2 8 16 base systems, hex editors.
Move onto assembly, c and c++
Then start studying reverse engineering of x86/x64 programs.
On top of that study methods of digital security, you need to know how to implement drm in order to crack it.
Watch and read articles and books, practice on crackmes.
As for your personal system requirements, average iq maybe won't be enough, that's why i suck at it, but i just started so maybe there's more with practice.
You can crap on empress all your want, but she's outstanding.

Windows will never have strong DRM because all the third-world pajeets will either stick to the old, pirated versions and flood Microsoft with support tickets for shit that was already fixed for the rest of time, or they'll switch to Linux.
Very few consumers actually buy Windows these days, most of its sales comes from OEMs or volume licenses for business. The only real reason to actually buy it is if you're building a PC, even upgrades have been free since 10.

Denuvo gets dropped by the publisher/company/dev after the license expires since it's too expensive to keep rolling, especially following the first 6 months of release unless it's some big ass company like Microshit and EA trying to protect their skinnerboxes like FIFA and Madden.

People who never intended to buy the game, won't buy the game, piracy does not affect sales, piracy is the only way to truly own games in the digital era.

I'll absolutely conced to that one. My metric for purchase is that I expect to get 2 hours for every dollar spent. The demake versions of GTA 3, Vice City and SA don't have their original soundtracks, meanwhile in a pirated game, Michal Jackson will always be the first song you hear on the radio in Vice City.

Buygays have no rebuttal to this, This is why piracy is a necessity in digital distribution. I understand digital distribution exists because shit got too big to write on physical media, but I don't think publishers and devs can't give people the option to use installers to install their game from downloaded files, they don't want to do it, because they hate people owning things, it means they can't change shit whenever they see fit and restrict who can gain access to their shit.

Look a Russia, if your shit government decides to do a bad, you are suddenly banned from digital distribution for no fault of your own which means you have no access to the shit YOU bought.

For old games, I agree. Preservation is becoming a reality for a lot of shit from '00-'10, but modern games really only have a few justifyable cases like every paradox game, Dead or Alive, or any other game that preys on buygays with in-game mtx gated content. Most people, though are in neither of these camps and just want free shit. Which is ok. What's annoying, though, is the grandstanding , attentiongayging, and moral aggression that most pirates display just because they downloaded a fricking video game that someone else cracked off the internet for free. Its asinine.
