Tezuka and Koji Kondo also still work at Nintendo. Nakago and Morita are also both contracted by Nintendo to this day (Nakago owns SRD which helped with New Horizons). I get what you were trying to say, but there's definitely better examples of removed games that the original devs will never see money from.

I would actually throw them a few bucks if they made the ROMs legally available, a one time purchase that would let me use them on any current and future system that lets the user install arbitrary software like emulators. But obviously they'll never do that.

Combo of both - Yeah, if Nintendo sold original copies of Pokemon Red/Blue to be able to be played on the Switch, yeah I'd be interested if it was like $5. But those games aren't available through official means, and you have to do a subscription to get to them. Maybe they'll get added later, but who's to say. To my knowledge, the only way to play the original Pokemon games is on the original hardware, same for the FireRed/LeafGreen remakes. Another thing - back on the Wii, I bought Majora's Mask from the Wii shop, but I can't have that on the Wii U or Switch. I'm not going to re-buy a game for the nth time just because Nintendo says I can't.

That's because Nintendo takes away their best titles and then offers bargain bin shovelware on their subscription service. If there was a one to one transfer of good games on rom site to good games as part of Nintendo's official service, I doubt people would be complaining. But not only do they rarely put out the shit that people want, taking literally fricking years to see anything worthwhile sometimes, but they don't even cover half of their consoles. On the Wii U, there was a small but decent selection of DS and Wii titles, but that shit hasn't shown up again as part of NSO and I don't think it will. At least, not without them bumping up the price another like $30 for the right to one day get access to these games.

Seriously, it's not that hard to understand.

My policy is to compensate the company in some way. Even if it's not the original guys, I'll pay the guys holding the IP (if only to try and be fair to them if they're maintaining it properly). However, after that point you're no longer beholden to copyright or companies, and can enjoy their product in any way you want. That means enjoying illegal romhacks and illegal modifications, such as QOL features or even completely unofficial ports (like Ship of Harkinian)

Who are these scumbags to imply that we shouldn't be able to enjoy and modify the games we purchased? "B-BUT IT'S A LICENSE, YOU CAN'T-" shut your ass up, corporate slave. I'd pay money for a legal emulator, if it was superior to what pirates could offer. It's why people supported GOG for so many years. No BS, no gimmicks, no stupid launchers. Just an exe you directly put onto your computer.

Can I buy it on Steam or GOG? Does it need me to create an account, download a launcher and run the launcher in the background? Does it have anti-cheat that can read my entire computer with full kernel access? Does it have Denuvo or other DRM? If the publisher can't adhere to basic honest principles then anyone who buys the game is getting inferior product. Why is a pirate getting the better version of the game? Why am I being punished for paying for it?

no one forces developers to pick Steam, they can always sell their game on their own storefront, oh wait, guess what, it's probably gonna cost more in operational costs than "letting" Steam take 30% for "nothing".

It once had great deals that beat the shit out of your wallet during the summer that had the entire company's catalogue on sale for -90% and this included the big companies too. Compared to PSN and Xbox Live at the time where it was just the usual standard -50% off every now and then. There was a reason why PC gaming took off during the 7th gen.

No because I buy a game and everything just works. I plug in my controller, press play and in 99% cases I am just playing a game. It literally works better than consoles now. I can delete a game completely and on the next install everything is back, my saves are backed up, the prices on regular sales are 10% of console prices. What online DRM? Just copy the entire install folder and your game is yours forever. What lootboxes battlepasses? I don't play Valve games. They are taking 30% for great service and my pockets don't feel it because even at full price the games are not more expensive than console games.
Valve is also the only highly successful company that is trying to diversify the PC platform by pushing linux compatibility. Sure their launcher is running on chromium but if that's your focus you are not being fair.

Yeah, and companies can't even be bothered to give you cross-platform compatibility. You ever try playing your PS3 games on the Ps4 or PS5? And I'm not taking the Ps3 exclusive games, but the stuff on the PSN store you'd think would transfer forward. Look at the virtual console on the WiiU and 3DS. For some reason they couldn't transfer any of this onto a switch account. And I have to hope that they won't come up with another excuse to justify dumping everyone's libraries for the Switch 2.

Remakes do not capture the same experience and are usually trash so those dont count, and the Nintendo Switch classics dont count as i dont own them, and instead im paying a subscription for permission to play them temporarily.

It's worth a read. Notable part:
            >Steam lets you refund a game if you haven't played it for more than 2 hours, and as a developer we can see the reason why people refunded it. When we read the explanation from someone who wrote that he needed the refund because he didn't want his parents to be stressed out when seeing the bill at the end of the month... well, it made us feel quite bad.
            >So we decided to do something about it! If you don't have the money and want to play the game, we have a safe torrent on the Pirate Bay of the latest version of Darkwood (1.0 hotfix 3), completely DRM-free. There's no catch, no added pirate hats for characters or anything like that. We have just one request: if you like Darkwood and want us to continue making games, consider buying it in the future, maybe on a sale, through Steam, GOG or Humble Store. But please, please, don't buy it through any key reselling site. By doing that, you're just feeding the cancer that is leeching off this industry.
As I've said I have not played the game but when it was on a sale I bought it on Steam because this is very based.

Huh? I'm 38 and have been pirating since I was 7 years old and stealing the demo discs out of vidya magazines every time my Mom and I would go grocery shopping.

After that, I'd trade games with my friends from school after we beat/got bored of them.

Then sleeping with high school girls in exchange for pirated anime.

Then sleeping with college girls in exchange for PDFs of college text books.

Then selling copies of pirated software to the plebs at college.

During COVID, I was pirating $700 a week in Federal Unemployment.

Blackbeard doesn't have shit my level of pirateness.

Having backups is completely normal, and if anything you're a fool for not having them. Even if you hate vidya and think of them as nothing but toys, do you know how handy it is to have a backup of your OS image, incase of drive failure? You do not know just how convenient it is, especially for those of us wwho begrudgingly use windows and had to spend a good month tweaking it and gutting it to make it usable.

Virtual Console was dumb as frick, 4 SNES roms cost more than a year of NSO, and Nintendo kept changing their online infrastructure so you weren't even guaranteed to carry that onwards, and I doubt any of the proud owners of roms on the Wii U are turning that shit on just to play old games when you can just easily emulate that shit anyway, the NSO is more convenient specially when you have to pay that shit to have access to online at all, the roms are just a bonus, it's just the expansion that is dumb unless you get on a family pack

my only experience with emulation was emulating Metal Gear Solid 4. It ran on 60 FPS with no hitches. But then I was scared shitless realizing this is not natural, deleted the game and app, then bought a PS3 and copy of the game.

Witcher 3 has no DRM whatsoever, you can literally go buy it on GOG, download the installation and then refund the game and keep the install package of a DRM free game. It is also one of the most financially successful games on PC. Simply make a good product and people will pay for it because shocking news to you, while most people are garbage, they do have a sense of moral obligation (if they are white or Asian).

      just for zoomers:
A gameboy game is about 200-300kb, some even below 100
gameboy advance games are 2-10MB each
      SNES games are 1-2MB each
      N64 Games are ~10MB
      PS1 games are 50-250MB

The big problem with using ROMs is you lock yourself out of the parallel dimension.

Use only OFFICIAL Emulators released OFFICIALLY, they take parallel dimensions into account. Your favorite emulator does not.

The time will come when this actually matters.

      Anonymous

what the frick is an official emulator

        Nora Kisaragi

Take the metal gear solid master collection as an example; it's an emulator running the games.

Or the SEGA GENESIS mini, it's an official emulator.

It has to be OFFICIAL to work properly. They keep the hackers at bay in an illusion they aren't ready to cut through yet.

When hackers figure out the parallel dimension exists, we're in a computer security nightmare here.

Haven't you wondered where the backdoors in your computer are? You're being watched.
