I'm sorry, but that was not my experience during this era
the wii got side projects and family/party games
the main "franchises" weren't being held back by the wii
however:
Every port is downgraded if you look at what is possible on PC.
>Every port is downgraded if you look at what is possible on PC.
this. these were the dark ages for pc ports and former pc series shifting to weaker systems with worse controls
I don't look down on them
I even like them a lot better, for some games
I just think that first and third person shooters control better and are more satisfying (no aimbot) with a mouse and even things like role playing games have to be a little dumbed down when you lose access to a full keyboard for skills and spells and etc. (although the dumbing down would happen regardless, probably)
The 360 controller set the standard through Microsoft shilling Xinput. If a game wanted to be usable on multiple platforms it had to control exactly like it would on 360 because Xinput would also set the standard for PC.
The problem is that 6th gen already established that this layout is kind of limited and shit, the right analog can barely provide adequate camera controls without the game either playing itself or needing very little accurate camera input. But in spite of these limitations the 360 controller still pretty much walled off most attempts to provide new input methods because of Xinput usually being the only recognized form of controller input for most PC multiplats.
The Wiimote may not have been perfect but at least it made an attempt to address the limitations of 6th gen controllers, meanwhile we're in 9th gen and the xbox still has no gyro.
Consoles are a massive bottleneck to games by default. Games are made with consoles and their limitations in mind and that alone changes plenty of aspect about their design that keeps them from trying anything that hasnt been proven to work.
360 held back gaming more. >shitty framerates everywhere >paid online >incomplete games where you needed to buy DLC >bad hardware reliability in the first model yet people still bought it
>produced some of the best games of its era >was fun to play >just put disk inside and play, no bullshit
If anything the one holding back gaming was the 360: >initially sold incomplete: WiFi, HDMI, an HDD big enough to download updates and games and HD DVD support sold separately >must pay a subscription to use your own internet connection and play the online mode that's already included in the game you already bought >extensive support for DLC and microtransactions >achievement support incentivices developers to change in-game rewards for a shitty phrase >99.99 % failure rate >very few exclusives all of which are either FPS or RPG and aged very poorly >Kinect, lmao >plug game, install gigantic update, play >Halo sucks ass since Reach
The 360 was quite powerful when it came out. It had a triple-core IBM Power CPU, just months after Intel and AMD introduced their first dual-core ones.
yeah I'm sure it was the Wii holding back gaming with its gameplay-focused games and not the other consoles who were busy slowing everything down and stuffing themselves with cutscenes in a desperate attempt to be hollywood, a desperate attempt that still continues to this day
When has the most powerful console on the market ever won its generation? It's almost like hardware strength doesn't automatically translate to units sold. Hell, the average consumer doesn't even know what consoles are more powerful amongst the competition, they just go by brand recognition or some shit.
Besides, it's not so much about raw power as the console with the least technical evolution being the dominant platform in sales that irritates me. The Wii is a GameCube with Xbox power.
What are you talking about? The Wii was a walled garden of a few good Nintendo games and a mountain of shovelware, while multiplats on PS3/360 broke sales records and either stayed on there, or got a gimped downgraded port for Wii. There's a reason when the Wii was essentially dead by the 2010's despite selling 100 million units
people at the time and apparently still now see the wii's success as something emblematic of a shift in the medium and not as a holiday craze in 2006/7 that happened to also be a video game console. it's really silly. the fact that the move would be entirely forgotten if its controllers weren't repurposed for VR and the kinect is a joke should say a lot about how irrelevant the wii's motion control systems are to the broader gaming scene
The Wii was dead by 2011 because Nintendo was already focusing on the WiiU. The PS360 were dead just a year later, getting gimped versions of PS4/ONE games only.
If the PS5 had any games, the PS4 would've been dead years ago. The fact that it isn't is just a failure on Sony's part. In fact it's the exact same thing that happened with the PSP/Vita.

Anon, Sony rushed out their own version of the Wiimote for the PS3 while Microsoft made the Kinect (lol). Sony included the LED bar on top of PS4 controllers to allow for motion controls there too, as well as their copy of the Wiimote while Microsoft wanted to make the Kinect mandatory (lmao.)
On Nintendo's side, the WiiU used the same controls as the Wii and the Switch uses motion controls too. As for portables, the 3DS and Vita both had motion controls.
Today the PS5 controller comes with motion controls integrated. The only console without them is the latest Xbox.
As much as "hardcore gamers" have been seething for the past 16 years, motion controls are now standard in consoles. The fact that developers or players are too lazy to use them well is a different story altogether.
>platform that holds back gaming
Ah yes, the platform with games that play like games is holding gaming back, & not the platforms with movie games that have 1 min of gameplay for 5 min of cutscenes
>console introduces motion controleld gaming, making innovative games like wii sports/resort, having the virtual console to play old retro games, and having backwards compatibility >xbox & PS3 introduce paid online, brown and gloom shooters, and....??????
this happens most gens, I don't see your point bitching about the wii in particular. if anything it brought more to the table in that regard than the PS2 in its gen since at least it had a specific gimmick that caused its success.

Holds back? PC was familiarizing itself with the predatory business practices that plague us today (and I definitely wish they held back from that forever, while the ps3 held back on color usage and the 360 held back game size due to using retarded dvds.
At least the wii didn't ruin ffxiii, at least it had colorful games you could play out of the box without dlc and installs. I have the three of them and haven't turned on 5he other 2 ever since I got my ps4 years ago, but the wii always gets played, it's an actual honest-to-god videogame.
>Cheap tablet with years old gpu, cpu and shit controllers with not even a browser or the ability to change themes is #1 worldwide.
We're living in the worst timeline
>a problem holds back gaming
It never did. Problem with the Wii is that for every enjoyable and polished game, there were at least five pieces of shovelware to balance it. There’s a ton of amazing games exclusive to the Wii as well as games like Metroid Prime Trilogy which enhanced and improved on the previous installments BUT… there’s also shit like Ninjabread Man giving it a bad reputation.
>platform that holds back gaming
if producing one of the best games of all time is holding back, I want to see gaming unleashed
(I think ps3 and 360 where successful enough and they held back gaming far more than the wii)
Any system that requires downgraded ports because the hardware spec is deliberately a generation behind is fucking everything up, don't deny it.
Every port is downgraded if you look at what is possible on PC.
I'm sorry, but that was not my experience during this era

Are you one of those people who look down on the "lowly" game controller as a standard?
I don't look down on them
I even like them a lot better, for some games

Also this.
But enough about the PS360 compared to PC.
The 360 was quite powerful when it came out. It had a triple-core IBM Power CPU, just months after Intel and AMD introduced their first dual-core ones.
WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT THE TECHNICAL POWER IF IT ISN'T USED TO IMPROVE THE GAMEPLAY
yeah I'm sure it was the Wii holding back gaming with its gameplay-focused games and not the other consoles who were busy slowing everything down and stuffing themselves with cutscenes in a desperate attempt to be hollywood, a desperate attempt that still continues to this day
>stuffing themselves with cutscenes
I hope you don't simp for Yakuza and say that.
where did that come from?
>b-but what about random game
Yakuza has shit gameplay and shit cutscenes though? It's only praised because of the serious story with slapstick humor.
>be hype for this for months
>finally get it
>it's amazing
No better feel
best game of all time
But enough about the PS4.

SNES, at least.

Nintendo isn't responsible for Xinput though.
>platform that holds back gaming
Ah yes, the platform with games that play like games is holding gaming back, & not the platforms with movie games that have 1 min of gameplay for 5 min of cutscenes
or the other platform that push subscription based online play first, and hosted most of the dudebro brown & gray shooters.
>console introduces motion controleld gaming, making innovative games like wii sports/resort, having the virtual console to play old retro games, and having backwards compatibility
>xbox & PS3 introduce paid online, brown and gloom shooters, and....??????
Online gaming on Wii sucks because the console assumes people are on wifi before it assumes they use Ethernet and not the other way around.
Rent free

Wow!
It was fun as fuck.

Ironically it was the HD consoles that held us back. The best games of the 7th gen were on the Wii, DS, and PSP.
Seethe. Wii is kino
How was wii holding back gaming if this console was barely getting ports of that gen multiplats?
Consoles are a massive bottleneck to games by default. Games are made with consoles and their limitations in mind and that alone changes plenty of aspect about their design that keeps them from trying anything that hasnt been proven to work.
>PC are a massive bottleneck to games by default.
Fixed
>Wii, DS and PS2 all held back gaming in their generations
>all have excellent libraries of exclusive gems
Really makes me think.
fun > power

The best version of the best game ever made was made exclusively for this console. It’s based.
Which is ?
>Wii was underpowered
>Gets dozens of great games
>PS5 is super powerful
>Has no games
W-Wait a minute, bros. Were we wrong?.
The PS5 has a decent amount of games. Just no exclusives. Nintendo is the only console maker that won't do PC ports.
this underpowered pieces of shit held and are still holding back gaming so bad...
*these
