>have to keep my characters at the lowest possible level ecause the only way to gain stats that aren't hp or mp is to have the appropriate magicite equipped
>start over 2 times because i accidentally put myself in a position where i had to eat a wasted level up
>end up beating the game mostly with a lvl 24 gau because i couldn't decide how to allocate my stats
>none of it mattered anyway because attack damage scales linearly with str while magic damage scales polynomially with mag
>none of it REALLY mattered anyway because the only stats that are worth anything are str or mag and you can get one to 128 and the other really close to 128 at lvl 99
>none of it REALLY REALLY mattered anyway because this game is so janky that you take no attack damage whatsoever at 255 def and you evade all magic at 128% magic evasion, both of which are easily doable with equipment alone
i'm so fucking tired, bros.. why did squaresoft make a stat growth system like this
this is seriously worse than random stat growth because at least i can just enjoy the story since i'm not going to sit there reloading saves until i get the perfect levels.

this isn't true. I power leveled my characters on my last run, and everyone had max stats by the end of the game thanks to the dinosaur forest. you're over complicating it.

you don't get str, mag, sta, or spd if you level up without equipping magicite. this means that every level you gain before you get your first 4 magicite results in 0 stat growth.
this also means that every level you gain before your +2 stat magicite is 1 stat point lost.

Yeah, it’s just obnoxious design, along with missable items which I always hate being part of a game. I can say from experience that doing a pure LLG or max stats game is NOT worth the effort you have to put in. Dodging the rats in the opera house for example is fucking near impossible. Basically the most fun way to play this game is by ignoring espers completely and only using characters’ naturally learned spells and abilities. The main downside of this is that it makes Relm an almost completely useless character unless you imp her. Other than that, it’s actually a pretty fun way to play through the game

You might had hated going into FF5 blind if you did it
    >hear that when you master a job class that Freelancer gets stat bonus based on that job class
    >master all job classes
    >turns out it only gets counts the highest stat bonus for the stat and not any of the other ones for the same stat.

because the game is piss easy and doesn't matter I literally always play without magicite on non-magic character. I only give them to Terra, Celes, Stargo, and Relm. Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Shadow, Setzer, etc never touch a magicite or learn magic since I like to keep them as pure physical non magic users And I can beat the game just fine that way. nothing in the game comes close to you needing to min-max

      Anonymous

Yeah min maxing is just a waste of time that forces you to grind. It literally takes most of the fun out of the game

You actually do gain stats from raw level-ups. The Magicite bonus just adds to it. Not sure why it bothers you that much though, if you're really that into min-maxing then you're just gonna use Ultima on everything since that's the most efficient way to defeat anything. And Ultima is so goddamn strong that even Cyan can cap with it. FFVIII and IX are way better examples of retarded leveling systems (although in IX's case, you're expected to beat the game around level 50-ish, so there's plenty of room to make up for the shitty stat gains you'll probably have to deal with early on).

Without espers, it’s literally impossible to gain stats on level up. Magic is also not the best form of attack considering you can only cast two spells at a time with gem box but you can attack four times with offering and genji glove. 9999x4 is better than 9999x2

        Anonymous

You do not gain stats without espers equipped. Terra at level one has the same str, agi, mag, stam, as level 99 terra if you don't equip espers

You can still gain stats from Relics and certain Weapons. It is not solely from Espers.

          Anonymous

Yeah they don’t actually gain you stats permanently though, you have to have them equipped. You must be thinking of spells. You can learn ultimate from the paladin shield and you can learn imp from the tortoise shield. There’s probably a couple more, but there is no item outside of espers that permanently raises your stats

the best of those relics are stuff like hero's ring and earring (which aren't actually stat modifiers but rather damage modifiers) and the increases are percentage based which means you want higher base stats if you want bigger rewards.

They are talking about permanent stat gains. Pay attention.

You're overestimating how much damage the Master's Scroll + Offering puts out, considering the Master's Scroll halves your attack power. You're doing eight single-target attacks at half potency each. Unless you really min-max the shit out of a specific character (and you only get one Master's Scroll, so it has to be one character) you're not gonna be doing enough damage with the combo to reach its full potential. Locke is the only realistic option for this since other physical-leaning characters like Shadow, Sabin, and Cyan have terrible weapon selections and need a Merit Award to equip something better-suited to the strategy, but that takes up a relic slot you need for it to work. Or you can just give the Master's Scroll to Setzer and he'll deal a shitload of damage without any setup due to his Fixed Dice (which you can easily get the second you have the Falcon).

Anyone with Quick and Ultima can use Ultima twice in a row, which hits all enemies for damage that's almost guaranteed to reach the cap. Whoever has the Soul of Thamasa can use Ultima five times in a single turn. Is this a very fun strategy? Absolutely not, but Master's Scroll + Genji Glove, while a fun combo, is absolutely not the best form of attack.

          but this pretty much.
you don't need str to do 9999x8 dmg with offering genji because ultima weapon ignores def and scales off of max hp.
and the difference in damage vs like 30 str to 80 str is kind of pathetic.

Name a better option. Not a more fun option, a more efficient one. Gau's Yojimbo Rage is good, but he can just cast Utlima instead. Setzer's Fixed Dice with the offering is great, but not as good against multiple targets as having him cast Ultima. Giving Mog the Impartisan, Reed Cloak, Saucer, Dragoon Boots and Dragon Horn and casting Imp on him is pretty fun and surprisingly effective. But you can just have him cast Ultima, too. Giving everyone Flame Shields and spamming Meltdown's pretty cool, but you can get Ultima way earlier. Ultima's too fucking strong, and if all you want to do is be as efficient as possible, it's all you're gonna be doing. It's not a meme, it's a genuine flaw in the game balance.

It ends up taking more time due to the animation length, and if you're judging efficiency, time is obviously the most important.

Kinda crazy how me and my friends thought Gogo was the best character, but he's really trash tier. Also kinda crazy that Relm is one of the best characters because she has the highest natural magic damage stat.

The equipment progression in this game was all over the place. Ragnarok is better than Illumina because Ragnarok procs Flare (no element) while Illumina procs Holy (absorbable) and msot of the "ultimate weapons" were pure trash.

Gogo's absurdly good from a utility standpoint. He has access to all the broken Rages Gau has while also being able to Throw, Steal, or use Edgar's Tools. His stats aren't good, but FFVI is undertuned anyway in terms of difficulty, so it's not like that's gonna hold you back. He's also ideal for farming some really goddamn good items since you can send him in the Coliseum with three Mugs.

Relm is just another Ultima user at the end of the day. Efficient, but dull. And that extra bit of magic doesn't make the damage cap any higher than when Terra, Celes, or Strago hit it with the same spell (especially since Terra and Celes have plenty of time to surpass her with Esper bonuses by the time you recruit Relm). Sketch is completely worthless too, so you can't even pretend she's there for anything other than nuking shit.

Unless you're speedrunning or doing an autistic self imposed challenge, just play it casually, read a guide if you're interested in one of the missables, FF6 is the easiest SNES FF game tht is not Mystic Quest.
If you want to go full autistic with a SNES JRPG, play Romancing SaGa 2 or 3 instead.

It's the best version if you don't want to mod the Pixel Remaster. Not having the extra content hurt VIPR a lot more than the other games. I'm not a fan of the Dragon's Den or Soul Shrine, but the extra Espers and spells helped balance the game out better. Namely Cactuar giving you an alternate (and better) source of Speed and the Valor spell giving physical attackers a much-needed damage boost.

Surprised no one's modded in the new shit yet. Not sure how difficult it'd be to do so however.

It's been a long time since I've payed attention to it but I think the PRs are fairly hard to mod. Last I checked they thought they figured out how to add content but the lack of mods means it probably didn't work real well.

I am not a turbo autism but I tend to enjoy RPGs less when they have these systems where you need to be low level to get optimal level ups later, especially when this system is either not explained or explained a ways into the game like in some BoFs.

You know what's crazy is how Cid took care of Celes for the entire year she was in a coma. How the fuck did he manage her bowel movements? It's not like he had access to stool softeners on hand and I didn't see an enema kit on the nearby table. How the fuck would she eat anything anyway when all they had on the island were fish?
