Neverland as well, though that was salvaged by being short, and the cutscenes

Deep Jungle is overhated (likely because people used to get stuck there as kids). Literally the only problem with it is that it doesn’t tell you how to save the gorillas. Neverland is actually one of my favourite worlds— Great atmosphere, great bosses and music and everything to do with the clock tower is just pure soul.

Really? Okay so Vanitas is a pet peeve of mine. The explanation for his existence is fine. Xehanort wanted to do his X- Blade thing so he chose a student and fricked with his heart until he had equal parts light and dark. So he could sick them at each other and hopefully get his magic sword. But humans don't work that way so instead Ventus went into a coma and etc. That stuff is fine but like... Ventus was only able to survive because Sora filled in the gaps in Ventus's heart so that he wouldn't live his life as a comatose potato. More amusingly is that because it affected Ventus's heart, it also affected Vanitas's heart. Meaning Vanitas ended up looking like Sora before Sora looked like Sora. But there's a bigger question to be asked. Because the Unversed comes from Vanitas. Vanitas is just so much of a shithead that his dickishness attained sentience. Why couldn't it just be that Vanitas controls Heartless? Sufficiently dark individuals are already shown to be able to control them. The Unverse appeared in one game and never again until KH3 where they're barely a thing. They're totally unnecessary. It's not like the nobodies where plot is built around them, the Unversed are Heartless in everything but name. It's just there to establish him is being so fricking evil that he created a new species but not so evil to be the final boss of the series.

              Anonymous

Actually now that I think about it, why wasn't Sora affected by that heart switch thing? I know he was a newborn when Ventus's heart got damaged but the fact that he helped Ventus out means his own heart should be missing pieces right? I can't remember if they explained that

                Anonymous

The explanation was that Sora's heart was so big it was able to help Ventus without damaging himself.

All people create a nobody when they die, some just become mindless grunts like a dusk.

No, not everyone makes a nobody. Thats why there are overall less nobodies than heartless.

            Anonymous

Nope, a nobody is always made, since they're what's left of the physical body of someone that gets munched by a heartless/lost to darkness

The kicker is that there's more ways than just eating people for heartless to get made, what with Ansem and his apprentices straight up making a 3D printer for them among other things

              Anonymous

In the KH2 cutscene where Yen Sid explains how nobodies are made he first states that it only happens at certain times where a person with a sufficiently strong heart and will becomes a heartless. He was talking about basic ass nobodies. So, in order to even become a dusk, you need to have some higher degree of strength. Not everyone has that. Usually the bodies just dissapear.

              Anonymous

I think final report from KH1FM states only strong heart becoming heartless will birth nobody.

                Anonymous

                Ansem's Report 13
Where does the body go when it separates from the heart? If the soul remains within the body, is it still considered to be deceased?
When the heart returns to the Heartless, the physical form disappears. But that is merely true in this world. Perhaps the body exists in another form in another world.
If that is the case, then it is possible for one to exist in two worlds.
A being that is neither darkness nor light; belonging nowhere; abandoned by its heart; a mere shell of its former self.
The relation between the heart and the body is complex. However, I am certain that if your self exists here, then by definition the other cannot truly "exist." The other, the one which does not exist, shall be dubbed,
                "Nobody."

Base KH2 is really closer to a 5 or 6. The story carries it and it's way too easy for its own good. You also have 99 levels and the only thing to do when you become level 50 right at the end is Sephiroth and Hades Paradox Cups. Also the passive abilities from your forms are minor improvements at best because you don't really need them outside of Glide and Aerial Dodge being good for Sephiroth. The original Drive gauge also charges extremely slowly.

          Anonymous

IMO, the actual ranking is something like this:

KH1: Either a 9.5/10 or a 10/10 depending on how much little nitpicks bug you.
          KH2: 6.5/10
          KH2FM:7.5/10

People vastly overestimate how much 2FM improved vanilla 2. Literally the only parts of 2 that people praise are the prologue, the endgame, CoR and the Lingering Will. The rest of the game really isn’t up to that standard. KH2 also has its version of Atlantica, which is indisputably the worst world in the entire franchise and was so bad that Nomura basically said Atlantica will never be in another KH game again because of it (say what you will about Arendelle in 3, but at least it was an ACTUAL world and it had SOME good ideas).

I decided to do a level 1 crit run right before KH3 came out and that was some of the most fun I had in a game in a long time, which was then immediately followed by one of the worst things I had played in a long time. I didn't even have expectations for Kingdom Hearts 3 but it somehow fell far below them.

I was so excited thinking KH3 would be a game filled with all the characters coming back and them partnering with you hunting down a true organization member in each world. Instead we got disneyshit which wasn't even done well and all the story was shoved to the final hour. Beast was Disney in KH at its finest, KH3 was just trash.

              Anonymous

I think what stung about 3 is that it wasn’t much better than BBS and DDD.

BBS and DDD are impressive games considering that they’re on handhelds with technological limitations, but they never did hold a candle to the PS2 games. For KH3 to be something truly impressive, it had to be a game that pushed the hardware to its limit just like KH1 and 2 did for their systems. Instead, we got shit like Twilight town being watered down to just the Tram Common and woods, despite Twilight Town being significantly bigger in KH2.

I think Toy Box was the only genuinely great world in the game.

Many will disagree due to the camera, lack of map, lack of direction where to go, and gameplay flow, but I'm inclined to agree regarding KH1. No KH game after has captured the spirit of adventure, friendship, and magic like KH1 did. At that point it wasn't overly bogged down with light darkness and xehanort bullshit and it was really cool to meet all the disney characters and act out parts of their stories. I actually liked that you weren't prompted where to go or provided a map. It encouraged you to do what you're supposed to do in an RPG, EXPLORE! Search the map, look around, talk to people. When you hit a cutscene, you're where you're supposed to be. Most times it's obvious anyways.

      KH2FM gameplay Chads rise up.

Org. 13 Data Battles were fun for anyone with a half a brain and any action game experience.

I wish final mix had been released earlier. I'm too busy to replay a game like 2 just to get to the data battles. I did however do the data battles in 3 and that was one of the more rewarding experiences I've gotten out of KH in years. It was actually fun to beat them one by one, study their attack pattern, and literally git gud. It was a massive rush to actually beat yozora.

Are there any other games out there that are similar to KH1?

A Metroidvania style ARPG with party members you can fully customise and command is such a unique premise, even to this day. KH2 didn’t scratch that itch for obvious reasons (it being Disney DMC rather than being what KH1 was).

KH1 and 2 are among my faves ever, but for different reasons. Gameplay in 1 is great because of the level design and more atmospheric challenges like completing puzzles for progression. 2 just has incredible combat design but lacks any level design whatsoever, which doesn't really matter since the encounter design is among the greatest I have seen in the action game genre.

        Anonymous

KH1 is better than 2 for several reasons:
        >better level design by a country mile
        >RPG elements matter way more
        >best magic system in the series
        >party members are actually useful instead of being limit dispensers
        >better story integration for the Disney worlds
        >cutscenes aren’t cringe and there’s also fewer cutscene interruptions overall
        >Didn’t need a Final Mix version to “fix” glaring issues with the vanilla game

I really feel KH2 sacrificed too much of what made KH1 unique and interesting to polish the combat, and even then the combat only shines during FM exclusive content. I swear that people memoryhole how dull 90% of the game is.

Agreed. Atlantica is actually great in KH1.Shame that they ruined it in KH2. I think Halloween Town is one of the weaker Disney worlds in KH1 though purely because the level design is more linear than the other worlds, which makes backtracking a pain.

The only thing I didn't like about KH1 Halloween Town is that you only get one save point after oogies manor is finished.
In fact, I didnt even like that it needed to be destroyed at all. Oh well.

            Anonymous

That’s kind of what I mean. Having a save point in the Evil Playroom is fine. It’s just wasted potential the manor ruins aren’t a particularly interesting place without the manor.

One thing I like though is that there are no permanent missables in the mansion. Any chests you miss end up spawning in the manor ruins instead, which is good because there are puppies and a red trinity in the manor.

Only in the final mix version. The red trinity is missable in the base model game.

Roxas was a bold fricking choice from Nomura, genuinely. An existential crisis story is hard to pull off well, especially to the schizo degree Roxas is put through, and if it is performed well and people actually come to like the character, having the "villain" who replaces him be your main protagonist is a hell of a move.
I never played through KH1, so I didn't have much knowledge of the franchise, but I fricking HATED Sora when I first played KH2. I was waiting and dreaming for when Roxas came back either as the protagonist or at least as a party member. The cutscene fight with him in TWTNW was great and I'm glad we got to play it a decade later, but I'll always remember how miffed I was that he was gone for good. Granted, I suppose I got my wish by now via Days and 3 that he get his big moment. Careful what you wish for.

KH1 Sora is a much better character than KH2 Sora. He’s less of a braindead shounen MC in 1 and more like a child protagonist of a Disney movie.

DDD felt a lot less impressive than Re:Coded tbh

True, but that was because DDD was just BBS but worse.

Re:Coded is actually mindblowing for a DS game. I’m still amazed they fit so much content in it.

I know this now, sure. KH1/CoM Sora is a different character to post-mindwipe Sora just from his actions alone. I suppose if you're going to rewrite the personality (even if it did make it worse) there's no better time than when the character was quite literally picked apart and some junior witch had to try and piece him together. It feels even more canonical when Data Sora's personality felt more like KH1/CoM Sora at certain times. Reminder that out of every KH character, he's the one that got shelved forever instead of shunted to Space Paranoids to hang out with Tron.

      >Roxas was a bold fricking choice from Nomura, genuinely. An existential crisis story is hard to pull off well
No, Nomura is a moron who doesn't understand that certain stories need the right time and place to be told. It's less bold and more out of place in a Disney nostalgia wankfest where everything more neutered even compared to their original stories and the concept of stakes was already slowly eroding behind the scenes. Roxas could've been an iconic protagonist if he had a game of his own and was the MC throughout, getting mixed in with Kingdom Hearts where ultimately nothing matters and everything revolves around Sora did him an enormous disserve, especially when even according to the Japanese poll he's the second most popular character.

        Anonymous

Destiny Islands doesn’t take as long and can be used for level/money/item grinding on repeat playthroughs of you know what you’re doing.

KH2’s prologue tells a kino story, but it’s god awful as a tutorial because it takes 4-7 hours casually and despite that, it doesn’t even explain much of the core mechanics to you. It explains the basic controls and that’s it. You don’t get a breakdown of how things like revenge values or other extremely important mechanics work.

Compare that to KH1 where the optional sparring matches are deliberately designed to teach you how the tech point system works without the need of prompts.

Having just finished a level 99 all secret bosses beat run in KHFM, the magic meme from going staff, while kind of fun, just doesn't feel as effective as simply raising your strength and beating the shit out of things with your keyblade, outside trash mobs

If we are talking about a regular playthrough, going for magic is the best in any scenario. For one, you have two more cures with your increased M. And the last Mob fight before Ansem is the only real challenge anyone experienced will have to face and increased Magic makes it a lot easier.

The most broken build in KH1 is a Strength/Magic hybrid. Specifically, having enough MP to spam Stop repeatedly while having a high enough Strength to be at the Strength cap. You can actually kill most bosses before they even have a chance to attack if you time your Stops at the end of combos properly.

Also, on Level 1 runs, Magic builds can exploit the damage storage bug on bosses.

Arguably one of the best endings in vidya history.

It gets even better when you realise how heavily the final boss/ending is foreshadowed throughout the game using both visual symbolism and drawing parallels between Sora and other characters (notice how Sora reaching out his hand to Kairi and Riku is a recurring motif throughout the game). Also, the fact that the disembodied voice that speaks to you in Dive to The Heart is Mickey really brings the game full circle.

It is worse than 2, but not bad. You have your gigantic room clearers but those don't come from nothing. If you didn't play critical I'd advise you to play that first.

            >You have your gigantic room clearers but those don't come from nothing

The game draws a fricking circle on screen around a specific mob, and if you hit it even once, it gives you a room clearer.
It's floaty, less responsive, less interactive, overly flashy.

Dont get me wrong. I like jumping off of walls and doing flips and shooting lasers, I just want to feel like I'm in control of the cool shit happening on screen, and I dont.
