3 rand like shit for me despite all the other games being totally fine. Also Nu7 don't have as much internal friction as the old team had in their first year. I still liked it but it was a rough start to the second half of the saga.

IX is the most similar but the environment is mostly a drab grey city / prison instead of the tropical environments in VIII. If that doesn’t bother you, every other aspect is pretty good compared to VIII.

Don't do it, it's honestly terrible. it's like 8 if they sucked all the heart and soul out of it. The story isn't good, the characters aren't good, the world SUCKS to explore. Combat is good but it's just 8's combat with a few added bells and whistles. I'd wait to see if 10 is good.
Ys before 7 was a very different beast. They're generally like a more action-focused Zelda with light RPG mechanics, and you can beat each of them in one sitting if you know what you're doing. The combat is always simple, but more engaging than the character-swapping games. I think they're all great, my favorites being Chronicles 1 and Dawn of Ys.

3 is a fucking abomination with some of the most insulting chapter endings I've ever seen. nu class 7 are way better than OG class 7 but CS3 just has too many problems for it to work out. 4 is much better and anyone who says otherwise never played it. I think it boils down to two things.

These days, Falcom craps out a new Trails game like every one to two years. It's not like back during Sky's development period where the staff essentially took five years to finish the original Sky duology, which were developed a single game from the get-go.
I really think Cold Steel's setting works against it. You have too much of your cast either locked in one place or punted off on side field trips (Which we never get to see but were probably way more exciting) but there's never a sense of real progression because the game wants you to be high schoolers too so there's always kind of a feeling of security. The Crossbell games were kind of the same way but I think it worked there better in part because your main party was smaller by about half so the characters weren't fighting for screen time so even if they weren't super developed they at least felt present. More to point, because they were older (if only slightly because LOL ANIME) and you know, cops, they were actually more proactive in how they were handling conflict. In cold steel 1 it's like you just sort of kept Scooby Dooing your way into major plot situations one after another but then your teachers would be all "Nah, man forget about it and go learn math or some shit."
I feel like there's a reason so many RPGs don't really have you in one location for too long and have a more sense of forward moment. It's because it allows characters to come and go as needed rather than just sit in the closet and never be used.

CS3 is full of big nothingburger interactions. All the Haremshit is a meme, Rean can only choose one girl to hook up with much like the Persona games.
Are people nostalgia fagg or something? Cold steel 1 was its lowest entry on a technical level to a so so story with bland characters and nothing as stakes. Just at the end was really something.
Cold Steel 1 is just Sky FC but way better paced and actually doing a good job of teasing the important shit to the player to keep them intrigued on what's to come instead of forgetting about it for the entire playtime until dumping everything on the player in the last act. Also Thor's was a comfy hub and I enjoyed going back to it after every chapter.
It's honestly kind of hard to rank 1. Because you're not wrong but a lot of the major problems with the series weren't really evident till later. When you played 1 the problems were there but you're kind of left thinking things will improve and can forgive 1 as being the entry point that needed to set things up. You can't really blame the first game because the later ones never made use of the stuff it put on the board without the benefit of hindsight.
It's the last entry to feature blood or people definitively dying on screen.
It sets up how and why erebonia operates the way it does with sensible consistent political storytelling, not thought memes.
It's the first and last game to feature rean having character traits flaws or anything approaching development.

I've only ever played the original ones on PSP, I liked the first one but two and 3 were very boring, I didn't like how much they changed the combat. How are the more modern games? They're pretty fuckin expensive still despite having assfuckloads of dlc.
The "DLC" for the Cold Steel games is just fluff like accessories and costumes, there's zero gameplay relevance there. It's not like there's a DLC story expansion or whatever, you can ignore all of it.

It's just one game, and yes it is good. The rest of the Xanadu series is hit or miss. The original Xanadu is VERY old and janky. The PC Engine CD games had fan translations in the works, but the team working has been silent for like the past 6 years.

The original Xanadu was literally the best-selling Japanese PC game during the 80s, and was the game that really put Falcom on the map.

It wasn't really a slight Ys 8 is genuinely up there as one of my favourite games of all time. It's just that from my understanding Ys is the gameplay series and Kiseki is the story focused series.

I liked SC WAY more because the cast actually got fleshed out and still had the globe trotting adventure of SC. To me SC is what FC should have been but with higher stakes so unfortunately I never got to experience the comfy adventure feel of FC with actual not awful characters.

It feels like nowadays people only play these games for the coom factor. The story went to shit, Zemuria appeal as a setting wore out, and the gameplay kind of devolved into a bloated tri-Ace tier recruitment JRPG with way too many characters and no real semblance of balancing.
I like the broken gameplay but I'm unsure about these new trails games since people say it ain't turnbased anymore and that's enough to put me off entirely

We've gone from liberal being some sort of super progressive country because it has usable airships and a single computer (but otherwise being medieval jrpg fantasy) to crossbell having modern intercontinental banking, cars and the internet to erbonia having fucking mechs, modern computers, modern pleasure yachts and smartphones in the space of like 7 years.

I'd strongly contest that the story went to shit in these games. Because saying it went to shit implies it went anywhere. I wish the game's plots went to shit, because that would at least mean something significant was happening. Once you realized that falcom has no intention of ever ending any of these it's impossible to muster up the energy to care about any of them.

Suikoden did it years before and did it better. This isn't a big deal and a shared world is meaningless when it's not an interesting one and the games have no real story to go with it. Each Suikoden takes part in the different time in a different part oft he world but always manages to tell a complete story. Even 4. Trails is what happens when you use "world building" as an excuse to hide you have nothing to say.
I played Sky and it's plot and characters were way too generic for how much I see people criticise Cold Steel for being generic and one dimensional. Sky's cast outside of Olivier(who is based and the best character in the series) and Kevin are a bunch of walking stereotypes without a hint of personality. I legit thought I was playing the wrong game with how hyped up it was in the writing department by people in these threads. I feel like even Ys 8 was a better written game than the first 3 Sky games.

I don't think there's really anything wrong with sticking to the tropes, once I got through my initial seething about how god damn terrible Sky FC was I actually enjoyed the subsequent 2 games quite a lot. I think people just set the wrong expectations for me which made me feel disappointed. I might have to replay FC at one point with my expectations right to see if I enjoy it more.
I need to play the Crossbell games next but I'm going to keep my expectations low this time. I enjoy dumb tropey stuff and I like how slow the games are, gives you that sense of belonging instead of rushing from plot point to plot point.
I wouldn't go that far. FC as I said was god awful, introducing characters and throwing them away before you could get attached to them, there was no hook beyond finding Casius which was way too sparse and uninteresting. Joshua's and Estelles interactions weren't fun for me, they aren't interesting characters and Estelle is kind of obnoxious and I really didn't like how much of a Mary Sue she is being forced into places in SC that she really had no place participating in and people sucking her dick like she was the best person ever. Their romance just felt melodramatic at times too. Maybe if you haven't played too many JRPGs Sky's writing could impress but to me it just felt tried and tested without really doing anything to set itself apart writing wise.
When it comes to giving you the sense of belonging, cold steel basically does it the best because one of the backdrops of the game is being part of an academy.
Actually, community is a big theme in the first two cold steel games. You're basically doing the same thing in sky where you're traveling around the country and helping people, but you're dealing with diverse communities and groups every chapter.
The big difference is that while cold steel rotates party members, you'll still get a decent amount of time with them as opposed to sky where you get a party member and then they're tossed aside.
That's why people tend to say cold steel is just a better version of sky.

The problem here is that despite the extra time you get none of that time is meaningful. I'd honestly argue that a shorter time spent with anyone character in a meaningful capacity is all the more memorable because their section of the game feels more compelling and unique rather than just another member for the party. And for as much as you say CS is about the community none of the characters really have any strong relationships outside of the MC. Which is honestly kind of a major deal. And surprisingly something TX actually did a decent job of with it's EX chapters taking the spotlight off Kou to give other characters a chance to interact with each other if only for a single brief dungeon.
Non criticism. I like CS becuase it shows them growing to be a group instead of just being BFFs right from the get go. CS1-4 are to me the only games in the series to properly make use of Kiseki's unique pacing to really flesh out its cast in a mundane real life kind of way. It felt real like they were just some kids who were thrust together. If anything CSs cast is TOO strong in their relationship with each other. This post reaks of someone that just rushed the story and didn't take his time to stop and smell the roses. The CS games have some really nice little details that you'd miss if you just speed through the game, most people just don't seem willing to give it a chance. Also fuck you Tokyo Xanadu is one of the worst written video games I've ever seen. The characters are INSANELY dull. They're a bunch of robots.

No it doesn't, it's the same Persona problem where the characters will get an implied arc but it's all served by and around MC and only the MC. None of the characters can tie their shoes without needing the MC to come over and pat their heads.

That's only barely an issue in CS1 because yes, they do literally revolve around Rean becuase it's like Rean's friends. They don't know each other, they don't spend time with each other so no shit their group is going to revolve around Rean. It's one thing I actually like is that Rean is only the centre piece holding them all together in 1 because their relationships are shallow at that point. If you play CS4 the difference is staggering. You constantly see the cast interacting while Rean's not involved at all. It's called development.

CS1 achieved more with its character than TX did. That game is a travesty in writing. MCs childhood friend is literally the only not terribly written character.

I am aware. But here's the point. For as much as they interact with Rean, there's really no reason they shouldn't all be interacting with each other either. The rest of class 7 do have stories outside of the class with their clubs and whatever but instead of focusing on their extra curricular lives they really should have more moments of the class acting as a class.
It's still a minor complaint considering even in CS2 that problem doesn't really exist. The whole "the whole cast revolves around Rean and don't feel close to each other" literally only applies to 1. In fact the rest of the group literally get paired togehter to form more intimate relations. Gaius and Elliot, Laura and Fie, Machias and Jusis, you even get a romance with Jusis and Millium(though contrived I'll admit). I feel like a lot of it is intentional so they can show how they grow closer to each other through the games. It's a complete non complaint considering CS1 is the set up game.

This is exactly the biggest problem I have with a lot of Cold Steel criticism. This is not objective criticism. Just because you wanted them to focus on something you considered to be of greater importance does not mean the game needed to focus on it. "game didn't do thing I wanted it to do" is not criticism. The ideal that they were formed to develop was only something Olivier thought. It was never the plot focus or any of the actual Class 7 member's focus. You wanted it to focus on that and that's your problem.

Again, YOU'RE expectations are yours. I loved that shit. I loved all that "superfluece" additions. It's literally why CS is my favourite of the 3 arcs. I like it becuase it doesn't just feel like another JRPG plot, it feels like a real world where people do their own things with their own lives and any happenings are simply that, things that happen in this world. For me Kiseki world building will ALWAYS trump its story. I don't really care that much about its story it hasn't been that interesting to me even back in Sky but the World is what I care about.

I'm not trying to pretend like it's especially ground breaking or anything but it as least something and that's very often enough. Give characters complimentary personalities and if it's on cruise control it can take care of itself. Take the reclusive computer geek put him next to the genki tomboy, take the older characters and let them act as voices of wisdom, have the generic childhood friend get jealous of the ever distant growing hero as he spends more time with the mysterious heroine. It's nothing new, it's like you say pretty well trodden ground, but it's SOMETHING.
My bar for enjoyment just isn't that low, unfortunately, and I know that Falcom were once capable of much better.

The big problem with Alisa isn't so much that she's tsundere but the game wants to force you to accept her as the main girl but then pretend you get persona esque dating sim crap too. So you'll be courting Laura for example but then the game will go out of the way to have Rean and Alisa sit down under the stars in a big romantic moment. Like if they just cut the crap, let the other characters have relationships outside of Rean (Not specifically romantic but maybe) and just had Alisa as the one heroine... well I can't say I'd like her too much really but I'd be less annoyed at the very least.
They really should have done Alisa only, or a choice between Alisa and Laura. Pretty much none of the romances between the other girls felt natural and felt shoe-horned in and because everyone was a potential choice all the scenes were shallow with little to no meaningful development.
To three's credit it did try to narrow it down to Alisa, Laura and Emma but then four threw that right out the window and just went all in on everyone. Even when it doesn't make sense

3rd took me the longest of the Sky games to complete, yet it's the shortest one. It feels fucking awful to play with it's pacing and dungeon-to-dungeon layout. The prologue was so kino and set great expectation, then the fucking CUBE shows up. Having it entirely not be grounded in the actual world the series spent two games making felt awful to play.
3rd has good writing and moments but its absolute trash to go through
Trails as a dungeon crawler doesn't work.
Most of the FF6 characters get two (2) cutscenes of development, each only a few minutes long, and they are more memorable than the Class 7 characters. The problem is the writing, not the amount of screentime.
Honestly It really doesn't take a lot. I'd say even most Ys characters are better written than a lot of the trails cast even if and when they're sticking to archetypes. I feel far too many people get it into their heads that a character arc has to be something massive when it just needs to be... well it just needs to be.

I don't see why that should matter. It doesn't take a lot to write a decent character arc. All you need is to introduce a character. Give them a goal/desire/problem to over come and boom we're off to the races. It's honestly just kind of basic level story writing. Even if you just follow a template it's better than having the characters just exist to be the MC's cheer squad.

I've got the platinum trophy for every Cold Steel games. I genuinely love them in all their cheesy glory. They just aren't enjoyable in the traditional sense. I think even for Sky they sort of have the same appeal as Persona, did you ever play Persona and think "god this school stuff is boring when can we get back to the plot"? If you did you'd probably not like Kiseki. I like Kiseki for the leasurly adventure and more mundane world building and character interactions it has. The wolrd feels vibrant and lived in becuase it deals with what daily life is like in such a setting. In your typical JRPG it's just moving from plot point to plot point with a cutscene between every new place moved but Kiseki is all about the slow life. I enjoy it for that. It's the SOL anime of JRPGS.
The school aspect of persona wasnt bad. It was the constant scene after scene after scene reiterating the same plot point over and over again. Thats when i started skipping dialogue. It was like an event happened then the characters discussed it. Then we have to see 2 useless npcs have the same discussion. Then that happens again. Then characters discuss it again. Then the character runs into an npc to have the same fucking conversation again. Then 2 story relevant npcs have the discussion. Like holy shit how many times do you have to have the same conversation. It got really bad in 5 especially towards the end of september.

What really gets me is the constant sense than for any progression I may make it's never enough. You introduce your big scary enemy and they kick your ass? Okay cool. You go off, train, and come back ready for round 2. And you think you finally grew and can match them, only for them to be all LOL NO, and then reveal "they were holding back" the entire time. The game absolutely refuses you to feel like you've developed in any meaningful sense.
I could understand it for maybe the first game. But it keeps happening in 2&3. Every fight you just know is gonna go down like this;

I hate the term character development to begin with. Characterization is a much more important writing staple than development. Before you think of changing your characters and having them grew flesh them fucking out first. Who gives a flying fuck if Estelle gets character development if she develops from a wooden spoon to a metal spoon. She's fucking boring regardless.
The issue is that "character development" is kind of a vague term that everyone has their own definition of, then it's treated as a thing writing MUST have, so if it doesn't have "my personal definition of character development" then the writing must be bad.
For some people, it means specifically the character changes in some way. But why should a character have to change to be considered well-written? And even if some characters change, in a large cast, why should they ALL change?
For other, it means the character being multi-faceted. Which is obviously a good thing, but do we need EVERY characters to be multi-faceted? For the main characters, sure. I think it's perfectly fine to have some party members who are more simple and one-note. They can still be fun in their own way. A cute little girl can be just that. A grumpy old man can be just that.

You can get away with just playing the cold steel series in order of 1 > 2 >3 >4 but the devs loves to throw old characters at you. So be prepared to meet side characters that are from older games. They get introductions and stuff though.
Each one is a direct sequel which makes it bizarre as to why the cold steel games seem like they're written for middle schoolers when the only people who could be possibly still interested in the series have done so for over a decade

I'd like for them to have another crack and Tokyo Xanadu. That game sucks ass but it does a lot of interesting things that I'd like for them to build on. Mainly I really like the mix of the Ys gameplay with Kiseki orbmant customisation.
