thats because every singly case of someone complaining about CTS in this thread has tendonitis.
you dont get carpal tunnel syndrome from using a mouse.

the entire CTS scare is a meme, you need to be a builder demolishing entire buildings by hand to get carpal, heavy stress, in other words.

I don't deal with it, the secret is to use your computer ergonomically so it never happens in the first place. I assume it's on your mouse hand? You should place your arm's weight on the chair's armrest and said armrest should be adjusted at a height very slightly above your desk, such that when your arm is on the chair your actual hand reaches the top of the mouse perfectly, without your wrist touching the desk and putting pressure on it. Also you should mostly use your arm to move the mouse, not your wrist.

I had what i thought was bad carpal tunnel syndrome, went and got it checked out and it turned out to be pain from a pinched nerve in my shoulder. I went and saw a doc because i felt a numbness/tingling in my armpit; once i took care of the pinchy it was all good

I use a mouse pad with a gel pack on it

      Anonymous

Those things always looked strange to me. Isn't carpal tunnel caused by pressure on your wrist in the first place? Wouldn't a mouse pad like that which is specifically designed to add pressure on your wrist actually be a bad idea?

        Anonymous

Carpal tunnel is caused by moving your wrist around, especially lots of smaller movements in short time accumulate a lot of stress. A gel pad helps to restrict the movement of your arm and it gives you a more comfortable resting position. If you feel comfortable you tend to move less versus feeling uncomfortable and shifting a lot.

you're thinking of RSI, carpal tunnel is caused by pressure on the median nerve

I still don't really get it, if you don't have a gel pad you can move your entire arm to move the mouse, thus actually keeping your wrist straight and relaxed. If you have a gel pad, doesn't it get in the way of sweeping arm movement, thus 'encouraging' you to control the mouse with your wrist even more?

I've got some nerve/vein issues in my left hand that seem to be permanent. Probably from an old injury. Whenever I use a power tool it feels like my hand is vibrating for like a minute after and I can feel my heart beat in the hand. I went to the doctors but they didn't do shit, so after a couple of years I've just sorta accepted it.

    >how do you guys deal with car pool tunnel syndrome? what are the essential stretches?
I avoided it by tilting my hand when using the mouse so that the pressure is in the right side rather than on the left. I did this naturally as if my body/mind somehow knew to avoid messing with the nerve when I started using computers daily decades ago.
The downside is most mouses feel odd due to my weird hand placement so finding one that 'fits' requires some trial and error.

Do work outs with your wrists. Get 1-2 pound weights, hand your hand off a table, then lift just before the maximum amount you can bring your wrist forward. Do this 10 times for one hand, switch to the other for 10, and repeat until you've lifted 30 times.

Another good exercise is what I call anime monk palm. Place both hands with palms together directly in front of your chest, then lower your hands until your arms are straight. You should feel a lot of pressure and tension in the muscles.

Ignore the morons telling you to "get over it." Nothing bad comes from doing proper exercise.

If you feel tingling in your fingers, then that's a pinched nerve. See a physio.
