This. There's tons of kids in VRchat. I don't want to speak to children or have them be around me when I'm trying to socialize unlike most people who play that game.

Its Second Life for zoomers, if that doesn't appeal to you then don't bother.

I guess this is why I haven't gotten further than looking at Vkets.

Which is sad because Second Life is still better but the interface filters too many brainlets (which coincidentally is most of vrchat)

          Anonymous

Most zoomers aren't even aware of Second Life, it was banned off Twitch years ago. Meanwhile VRchat's popularity can be traced to streamers overreacting to anime booba and meme avatars. You can also argue the VR element makes up for any areas that it lacks compared to SL.

Stuff like Discord pretty much murdered any virtual chat environment and most MMOs. It's not surprising a lot of them don't look into this kind of stuff beyond surface level.

How? Even in the 2000's AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, ect were still very popular and webcams existed back then it didn't Stop games like WoW from being relevant

Changing social landscape and convenience. Not a lot of people are at their computers as much as they were back in the 2000s, and because of smartphones the need for a more mobile-friendly chat client arose. It's easier to just have Discord running in the background to access your friends than to get on WoW and start playing a game if you want to socialize.

            Anonymous

Banned off Twitch? Why? I mean, aside from the porn shit but that I imagine could be the same in VRChat?

What's VRchat's monetization? If its just that subscription optional shit that's fine, but I am wondering their long term plans if they're going to start charging for everything or selling virtual land or worse NFTs, certified avatars or something? The more they lock it down and or allow people to create but then take a cut of their creations, the greater a concern it is they'll make player unfriendly decisions to keep big money rolling in.

I think the VR aspect and high fidelity/graphics make it desirable over Second Life for many zoomers, but SL players got to enjoy the powerful creation tools that were relatively easy to use, but I've not checked in for quite some time.

Anyone who was looking to socialize and generally frick around in a game, with or without VR if they're not up for VRChat or just want a change, check out Tower Unite - https://store.steampowered.com/app/394690/Tower_Unite/ - its kinda like a VR "hangout" or resort with lots of minigames and shit to do, but all free! I've popped in every so often and it seems the devs really make an effort and its easy to import even custom stuff on Steam Workshop.

              >What's VRchat's monetization?
They just released their premium subscription service

                Anonymous

SL was banned because of pornographic material that could pop up during ones stream. Yes VRchat suffers the same problem but the difference is that its popular so there's a incentive to keep it on. Zoomers don't know nor care about SL so it wasn't a hard decision. Also this happened years ago before Twitch was filled with e-prostitutes so they were more strict about sexual content during streams.
                >monetization
Originally they were funded by VR investors because Its a killer app. Tons of people bought headsets solely because of VRchat videos they saw on Youtube. More recently they've offered premium subscriptions.

Ahh, if thats their only monetization that's cool. Subscriptions are fine. I was wondering if it was more SL-like where if users create something they can sell it in game for "game credits that you can exchange for real money" and the VRChat devs would make a lot of their money based on cuts from sales of user created content, avatars etc.? I am a bit concerned that if they were given a lot of money early on to be the VR killer app, that it will run out some day and they'll add other revenue streams. If its just the subscription that's fine, but I've seen this setup go bad before where venture capital basically carries everything while they get users and then it goes to hell after they get popular and try to pack their wallets.

                >but all free!
                >13,43€

The DLC and in game stuff is all free, plus user created mods. The $15 (when not on sale) buy to play price for the game itself is really reasonable I'd think and it goes on sale for like $6, so there's not much to complain about I'd think. f

I just got VR last month and I don't know how an aspie like me can make friends? It seems like everyone already has their social circles, if I try to socialize they ignore me, I don't know where to go to find the cool areas or games to make friends and only go to the recommended lobbys they have which people are already in their own circles.

I have a Valve Index full kit (knuckles, lighthouses, HMD)...what else are people using for VRChat in terms of specialized hardware or software? You see all those videos of people petting their anime waifu or furry or whatever the frick and are they using some sort of advanced haptic gloves or is it mostly just standard VR type controllers? Same thing with full body movement and all - is it simulated from basic VR kit or are people using a whole frickload of additional sensors or LeapMotion / UltraLeap3Di for hand tracking or something?

I've been considering getting a VRM format avatar one way or another to play around with this shit and use it for VTuber use as well, so it seems VRM is better than Live2D in this regard, since it can be used for both VRChat and similar as well as VTuber streaming shit, but it looks rather complex to either make from scratch or edit an existing one - and the fact there aren't a whole bunch of decent masculine male avatars out there makes it a bit more difficult.

full body is vive trackers/tundra trackers/slime trackers/other obscure tracking methods
vrc doesn't support VRM (?) but I think it's simple to convert
uploading a avatar can be as simple as opening the unity prefab and clicking upload, or learning and becoming proficient in 3d character modelling then scratch making your own from the cube up, or anything in between.

        Anonymous

        >Vive trackers, tundra tracker, slime trackers
Any idea which of these are best? I rather like that Slime is open source all the way down and probably Linux compatible, but they seem to work a bit differently on WiFi signalling vs using the lighthouse like Vive / Tundra do. Seems like Vive was the original, Tundra is the upgraded version.

        >avatars
No VRM? For some reason I thought that was the standard you could frick with it in Unity and export or whatever. As far as avatar creation, any suggestions?

          Anonymous

vive trackers (3.0 > 2.0) > tundra trackers > slime trackers = other obscure tracking methods
they are "best" to worst in that order although tundras should be "as good as" vives but I've heard mixed things plus they're not even that cheap now.

avatar "creation"? I don't know if you know what you're asking. Either you know how to 3d model or you buy one and learn how to 3d model by editing it to your taste.

Maybe some avatars for purchase come with VRMs it just isn't the workflow.

It's a game with user generated content, and most people buy models premade which are severely unoptimized being able to consume over a gig of VRAM PER AVATAR.
