Because D&D (and it's derivates) is the only game where faints and such are a waste of a turn instead of being implemented into the attack roll itself. In good games, there is no "just rolls to hit".

Not an only D&D problem but as it is the most popular system you are at a higher chance of meeting worse players in it.

Find a big discord. Offer to run some games. Give repeat invites to the players you like and politely decline any players who did a shit job. After a handful of one-shots, you should have a core of people who can be trusted with simple maths and sincere roleplaying.

You'd almost never run into circumstances to be a cannibal as a gnoll. You'd have plenty of chances to consume the flesh of weaker races, though. Don't pick the character if you can't roleplay.

What's the point in playing different races with cultures and traditions if most players ignore them just to roleplay as different skinned humans?

Fantasy races are all dumb af. 99% of the time even experienced players just play them as human. Humans cannot accurately conceive of non-human experience. At best they play them as humans with a different life circumstance or culture.

    >What's the point in playing different races with cultures and traditions if most players ignore them just to roleplay as different skinned humans?
The stat block. He wanted what ever numerical bonuses and abilities that gnoll was offering. That's what these players want in about 95% of cases.
If you take away all the stat blocks and tell people they can play what ever race they like, there is just no bonus for it, then the vast majority of people will just happily play human. They never wanted to play a freakshit race, but their inner min-maxer demanded it of them.

      Smaugchad

Is literally the opposite of this. The only time it is mechanically advantageous to pass up humans' free feat is for very specific builds that relate to the race's normal culture.

A good min-maxer will be halfway to role playing their character's race correctly before they ever get to the table.

I got to have a whole cannibalism moment involving gnolls in my game awhile back. It was the gnolls being eaten, but hey, almost there.
A winter fae in a skinsuit that started hanging around the party helped them kill gnolls and wanted to know what they tasted like.
As a few other components of the party are similar beings. (Albeit ones born into that state, thus this guy's interest in them. Kind of a 'fascinated by the lives of people who never leave their spacesuits,' situation,) one of them is also hard-wired to eat random things for curiosities sake, so at least took him aside and instructed him how to be discrete about eating people.
Not that anyone present really considered gnolls people in any meaningful way, but best teach him good habits now.

No, only one species, the spotted hyena have a 'pseudo-penis', not all species of hyena. Considering that most depictions of gnoll seem to most closely resemble the strandwolf rather than spotted. chances are female gnolls have pretty normal genitals.

If only the standardized correct way to play was codified in a set of rule, and those rules written in some book. A book of rules. That book could then be copied and distributed. Wouldn't that be handy?

My character is a fennec-fox kitsune. I just wanna be a funny little fox guy. (He is, however, the smallest character in the party, at a minuscule 4'11".)

Though, I did add a little bit on top of that, namely that he speaks "Fennec-ese" (actually just toki pona in everything but name) and can use his large ears for a form of sign language that involves twitching them around like a pair of semaphore flags

Also he's canonically a gamer (his arcane focus is a Duel Disk and his spellbook a deck of cards) and during a zone-of-truth interrogation (not meant for him, mind you) casually admitted that when he was 6 years old he was playing dragonchess against a friend and ate the pieces when the friend wasn't looking

Did he at least play on the fact that he wasn't like the rest of his kind ? Or that his kind was misguided and is redeemable ? Any of those could justify a normal acting gnoll in a relatively interesting narrative, otherwise, kill him

Gnolls are among my favorites because you can name them kurd the ankle biter or gash the guts stealer without raising an eyebrow, you can also do Italian/Korean mafia or Cartel Gnolls if your setting allows it

The fun part about them is not the cannibalism but their pragmatic approach to solving problems since 90% of the time you have a justification to either use the threat of violence as a persuasion tactic or just outright violence, the other 10% is just as fun if you know how to bounce of your party, Gnolls are violence with purpose the weird template to be a "smart" murder hobo without being disruptive

This fixation with eating corpses is kinda dumb, you do it because it's a survival option not a fetish thing, I'd rather play it off as being able to eat almost everything in survival situations, playing a Gnoll survivalist and scout is also fun, I also think it's fine if that one guy just wanted to be a cool hyena and roll damage, part of the fun of being a Gnoll is combat since you can theoretically go balls deep with a charge and get away with it, frick it one of my best campaigns was as a war cleric Gnoll that wanted to keep the conflict going so his clan could sell more weapons you don't need to be that deep to have fun

So it's just a tiefling situation where he wants to be a Hyena instead, let him be a hyena then, not everything has to be about character development or character arcs
