can never look at it the same after finding out it was a flaregun model
I don't think it was actually the flare gun model.
It wasn't the flaregun, the flaregun didn't had a model yet so they defaulted to this.
Using a giant assault rifle as a flare launcher is a Combine thing to do, but I suspect as other anons said that it never was THE flare gun model, just a placeholder
It wasn't THE flaregun, but it did the same thing.
forgot link
I'd want to assume it was intended to be an upgrade for the flare gun, perhaps a full auto long range version that's basically a different thing but serves the same function of setting things on fire, but they just borrowed the flare pistol's functionality for that gameplay demo. This is just me trying to understand the bizarreness of this weapon concept though. Maybe it really was meant to be a shitty flare launcher.

changes the box mag
The AR2 energy cells are only for one shot, the magazines is full of them and replaces them after each shot.
There are mods that correct this if you somehow play a 2004 game
And when you pick up an AR2 mag, it's an actual C-shaped mag. I feel like whoever was in charge of designing that weapon got fired before finishing the reload animation.
Isn't the viewmodel for the AR2 basically just a 2D image made to look 3D? I remember there being something completely off about it.
Nah, there's an actual 3D model like other weapons.
If it was 2D, the lighting would give it away the instant your weapon doesn't reflect the surrounding lights like the others.
iirc only what you see is actually textured on the AR2. If you were to look at the other side of the viewmodel, you'd see through the gun since that side of the model isn't textured. Pretty sure that's what it was, anyway. That sort of thing is pretty common in videogames though.
I remember that TF2 had something similar, the weapons that never really turned around didn't had the other side modeled, for optimisation sake.
And then one update they added the possibility to inspect your gun, which make me think they had to redo every single weapons.
>And then one update they added the possibility to inspect your gun, which make me think they had to redo every single weapons.
No, long before then they'd replaced* v_models (view, what you see in first person) and w_models (world, what everyone else sees) with c_models (combined). If you've ever seen those videos about weapon models/animations in first person being downgraded, that's the cause because they were made didn't/couldn't replicate what they'd originally done bespoke for the v_models.
*this makes it sound like it all happened at once, but it was a slow transition done on an as-needed basis because it wasn't conceived as a wholesale replacement; they just used them as an easier way to make new milestone weapons, and later gradually backported older weapons in the process of "optimization" updates (counter-intuitively creating more performance issues due to ongoing issues of new c_models not being made with LODs)
>counter-intuitively creating more performance issues due to ongoing issues of new c_models not being made with LODs
Would weapon models starting with really low quality textures be one of those issues?
I remember that pulling some weapons would cause them to start out as low texture for no particular reasons.
Texture streaming was a much later addition, from a later pass of optimization updates that were mainly to compensate for the problems they themselves created the first time around
The view models are polygonal 3d, they just remove faces that aren't visible to the player. You could spawn them as objects in Gmod and a bunch of faces that the player didn't have line of sight to were omitted.
How does duplex work in a pump-action shotgun?
Fair question. Since it only has one barrel I would have to imagine, setting video game logic aside, it would be built like an An-94 with all kinds of shenanigans to load and fire a second shell as the recoil hits your shoulder.
Maybe it's like that that one HL1 shotgun animation mod? You just load all shells in the barrel and shoot them at once?
Anyhow, why'd they stop making SPAS?
It was pretty expensive, it was meant to be sold to police / anti-terrorism specialists which is a hard sell for any weapon, and when imports were banned with the FAWB it basically killed the one market that could sustain it.
It would just be easier to make a double barrel shotgun that takes one mag I think
I heard they lost the original texture and projected the texture on from a screenshot of the original they had. If you look at it from other angles it looks way off.
since everyone else is posting about the pulse rifle, here's another tidbit. It's modeled after an Heckler & Koch XM8 with the energy magazine attached to the front of the barrel.
I don't think that's right anon
?
I almost miss when the XM8 was all the craze and the US was inches away from being adopted. I kind of like the M5 but it's pretty much a never ever as a civilian. With that new ammo.
I don't like the fact that everyone has consolidated around an AR style rifle 🙁
Only 10 years ago you had weird and fun Euro bullpups in the mix, SMGs, PDWs (marketing term, I know), and some states using holdover big calibre BRs. First Person Shooters are gonna get more boring in terms of weapon selection in the coming years.
The thing about the M5 is it's everything. It's an AR, sure, but you can operate it like an AK, SCAR and AR. It's almost designed to be operated by people who want to reload it with their favorite Vidya reload animation. It's designed for brainlet noguns zoomers. And it's kind of worrying. RIP, zoomers, the M5 was designed for ease of use to send you to war with whatever games and movies you watch.
Yeah I'm not saying it's not efficient, it's just a little boring for my millennial brain. A dozen years ago we had people arguing that bullpups were the future of the infantry rifle because the UK and France used them. Things are very different now.
Bullpups were like the XM8 where they were futuristic and cool, like the M16 in Vietnam and companies could get funding for trials. But Bullpups do have a use for close quarters and room clearing, which Israel loved and needed so much that they made the Tavor, probably the only practical bullpups since they need it to murder people in the small hallways of their homes.
Weapon design is interesting and I wish game devs put more thought into how guns in their games work in different situations.
>And it's kind of worrying.
It really isn't, trammosexual.

It's a compensator to reduce muzzle climb. It's a H&K USP Match.

haha very funny ESL anon, very good
Pistols actually sound like that from a distance. The soundfiles for distant and close shots were swapped for some fricking reason. You can see this in E3 footage or from the leak.
isn't it okay that it's so underwhelming considering it's the first weapon you get and relatively weak? the 357 is the better pistol
>isn't it okay that it's so underwhelming considering it's the first weapon you get and relatively weak
Absolutely, I'm of the mind that weak guns should sound weak.
It’s weak, but still maintains some use throughout the game. Either for shooting barrels, head crabs, or other weak threats. Weak weapons should still have a use in game. Otherwise why the frick did you waste time and money putting it in?
I think it's actually pretty strong. But it heavily depends on how fast you can click and also only make Headshots.

Are you moronic or just trolling? That thing was broken as hell in Halo.
not in 2 or 3, dumbass
It was ridiculous in Halo 1.
In Halo 2 it was literally only useful for headshots it you were dual wielding it with a plasma pistol.
I don't remember about 3, but I'm pretty sure it was in pretty much the same place as 2.
3's was even worse because they lowered the rate of fire and the mag count to 8.
I literally cannot enjoy 3's campaign without modding because the vanilla weapons are so centered around multiplayer balancing that they all feel pathetic.
The 3 pistol only resembles the CE one.
Pretty much every gun was shit in Halo 3, besides the shotgun
Honestly most of H3's weapons that aren't anti-vehicle suck. Only ones I liked using were the BR/carbine and the shotgun pistol. The ODST pistol was breddy gud though.

What did electrifying the rebar actually accomplish?
Making it burning red hot.
No idea how you would unload it if you don't intend to fire tho.
You'd basically have to hold the weapon for like two hours waiting for the thing to cooldown enough so you could take it off without burning yourself.
Right but I never felt like the heat part ever really factored into how it does damage
It's just a giant fricking chunk of metal at extremely high velocity going through some dude's rib cage it doesn't need +5 fire damage
Maybe something to do with going through things more easily or hurting more?
That being said, it's a crossbow made of scavenged parts by some rebel, it's entirely possible the battery have a different purpose like boosting the rebar speed with magnetic force or something, and cooking the rebar was just a side effect.
>Maybe something to do with going through things more easily
Metal becomes soft when heated, especially when heated to the point that it's fricking glowing, and that would cause it to warp as soon as it actually hits anything, which harms penetrative ability.
The real answer is always the simplest: the designers thought it was cool.
Bro it's a piece of steel launched by a modern crossbow, it's gonna go through anything, even old crossbows were incredibly powerful and pierced through armor like butter.
The goal of the heat is to kill them by heat shock. That's why they die in one shot even when it land in the arm. (I just made this up but it sounds plausible

>even old crossbows were incredibly powerful and pierced through armor like butter.
Yeah, old crossbows were also not shooting metal rods that were weakened by heating them until they glowed.
Video related https://youtu.be/0nLT_bEaLlY?t=1131
Granted they're not shooting real rebar (they couldn't get a good enough contact to actually heat it) but the principle is the same. They also point out in the comment section that in most of their tests they specifically did not heat the tip of the steel rods they used because when they tried it always completely failed to penetrate because the metal became too soft.
Molten steel will still penetrate.
Fricking moron, you can see in the pic that the rod is glowing red only from the outside. The core is cool and hard = when the rod smacks at you with its complete mass along with the molten jacket, the hardened core will slide from within the molten shit and form a penetrative spike you fricking dumbo frick out of here with your snarky homosexual attitude

Uh, I forgot that was the HD model, my bad.
HL1 shotgun is fine then.
Half Life 1's shotgun is sadly underpowered. Once you get the SMG, there's hardly any reason to use it against anything stronger than a zombie
Are you kidding me? SMG is the underpowered weapon here. Shotgun is useful all the way through and will be the weapon you'll be using the most alongside the pistol and maybe revolver/gauss. SMG does have grenades which are very useful, though.
>>HL2 shotgun > HL1 shotgun
>come on
Have you ever played HL1 on hard? The shotgun is really weak and VERY inaccurate. A headcrab runs the risk of eating an entire magazine because of the damage and spread.
HL2's shotgun melts everything. From headcrabs to hunters. Even on hard difficulty.

Based and underappreciated weapon
This thing shits out incredibly respectable damage
I play pyro far better when I use the shotgun as the primary and my flamethrower as my secondary.
I'm a shittier scout, but whatever.
That's because they made the flamethrowers even more inconsistent with damage
>damage start low and peak as you deal damage to your target, reset if you stop hitting your target
>in theory it means you have to aim with the flamethrower to get the most of it
>in practice it means that a random particle hit a wall or the floor, it reset damage, which happen all the time so you're constantly hurting for low-mid damage
>as a result your opponent have a much higher DPS than you if they carry a shotgun or better, and can melt you before you burn them out
No wonder being a shotgun pyro is so good, it's like carrying a flamethrower that actually hurt.
Oh I know. The Backburner is my most commonly used flamethrower and I have seen plenty of 125hp classes survive the crits, turn around and kill me because the damage is so inconsistent.

Yes, Half-Life 2 suffered a lot from the classic mistake of focusing on actually making the AI smarter instead of on the illusion tricks. Counter-intuitively, "dumber" actions can make an AI look smarter and "smarter" actions make the AI look dumber.

Things are always just a little bit "off" in Valve games. The AR2's big useless magazine, the single-barreled double-barreled shotgun, TF2's scattergun with the reload animation that makes no sense.
