Pokemon

What is the “best” handheld Pokemon game? I have a homebrewed 3DS so anything from Game Boy to 3DS. I ask because I’ve never played Pokemon before and I want to give one a shot. I’ve read so many different answers from Emerald to Platinum to Heartgold to Black. I just want to know what you guys think. If I were to only play one, which would you recommend?

I know there is a Pokemon board but I want to discuss video games and they mainly seem to discuss the anime and which 11 year old Pokegirl they want to frick.

As a massive pokemon fan, Id go with either gen 3 (ruby, sapp, emerald) or Heart gold and soul silver. If you want a retro feel then crystal is probably the best Pokémon game

IMO Platinum is the best one to play if you’ve never played before. Black has a seriously slow start that you could easily get bored of and only has Pokémon from gen 5, and HGSS is an overrated mess that fixes none of the debilitating issues of GSC which it’s a remake of. Emerald is a good pick as well, but Gen 4 introduced a pretty sizeable change with the physical/special split; before Gen 4 every type would only deal physical or special damage, but as of Gen 4 each move is now physical or special on a move-to-move basis rather than decided entirely by what type the move is.
TL;DR IMO Platinum, but Emerald and even FireRed are good options too

The effort and genuine nature of the games stopped after X and Y, but peaked with the original Blk/Wht which has the best music, most fleshed out themes, best antagonists, and best visuals/atmosphere. HG/SS is really fricking close to it though with the best rival and best progression in the Pokémon games but with fresher visuals and better music.

Pokémon Clover, it's the one that will actually make you invested in the lore and stuff. Don't take these games too seriously

You can't go wrong with any of the ones you listed but I'd go for BW2. Those games have a large selection of pokemon you catch with a meaty postgame to enjoy

I never really saw the point in having a significant post-game within Pokemon or other similar JRPGs. I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing or stupid to want that, but if the game itself is perfected with the climax of the story, what point would there be to having additional stuff that happens after the game, especially when the main part is already done. It just seems insignificant and unmemorable

While gen 5 does have a heavier emphasis on story then its predecessors, pokemon is more about the battles and improving your team. The post game lets you test out how well your team is with stronger opponents and reward them with new items and moves to use.

If you're only going to play one, I would say playing Leaf Green/Fire Red, to experience what got the series started and the best remake. If you just want the absolute best Pokemon game, then play Emerald.

I recommend emerald, if not that then platinum.

BW2 is the best, but if you didn't play BW1 none of it makes sense and BW1 is pretty shit.
realistically you aren't even remotely going to be challenged as an adult, so just play HGSS because it has a lot to see and a lot to do.

they're all so similar that you can't really choose incorrectly, that said if you've never played any of them i recommend X or Y, they're very robust and enjoyable to replay. sure Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are more polished entries with a very good feature (dexnav helps for collecting all the pokemon) i still think XY is a good beginning.
