I've seen people say pokemon aren't meant to be animals and it was almost always by some pokefricker too

I thought Gardevoirs were really attractive as a kid, and it always made me feel like shit when I would go online and see people saying they were animals and that it makes you a furgay or zoophile to feel that way. I was able to brush it off and forget about it eventually, but I can't help but wonder how many kids end up developing harmful psychological complexes over it. How many kids end up being damaged because the internet convinces them they're freaks?
This is why I think the guys at Gamefreak should bite the bullet and explicitly present the especially humanlike Pokemon as sapient enough to be romanced. Because whatever their vision for the series may be, this goes beyond that. It's about children's mental well-being.

Digimon aren't pets. This is because BASED BANDAI, as flawed as it is, actually respects its monster characters. On the other hand, GREEDY GAMEFREAK sees its monster characters as nothing more than marketability tools for children to laugh at.

This is because Pokemon never had consistency with its direction or design philosophy.
Unlike Digimon which follows a cetain rules and roles for its designs, Pokemon always changes its concept, lore, and art direction with every new generation.

Gen 1 was all about Kaijus in a polluted world.
Gen2 decided to make cute baby pokemon but the world had some sense of mysticism and unknown aura to it.
Gen3 and later all stared the trend of "UwU kawaii UggU friendly partners who can't wait to be our slav- i mean friends :)"
And Lucario and Blaziken became the templates for future designs.

Nah, Pokemon has been consistent in their design and world. It's more like Digimon has ever changing lore. In the latest Digimon game they're not even Digital Monsters but instead spirits called Kemonogami which means beasts gods. They're only called Digimon once in Survive. In other iterations they're sound waves.

I haven't played Survive but they are computer programs. They can be anything depends on the world.

They aren't following the same art direction

Even if the kaiju influence is there it's still pretty dialed back like most of them being manlets instead of hulking behemoths. In the biographical manga Tajiri constantly stresses the need for Pokemon to look friendly and their friendliness towards humans as being a key factor to their behavior and Sugimori considered friendliness as a key factor of a Pokemon's design, even saying the same thing in a GameInforner interview.

That all changed when Pokemon Legends made it canon for Pokemon to brutally slaughter villages purely out of feral territorial savagery, which is what happened to Kamado's people.

Legends of Arceus makes it clear that Pokemon are creatures that are naturally attracted to humans. In the pastures an NPC makes note that Pokemon can easily escape the pastures they're kept in, it's really a little fence that keeps them out of the village, and she says because the Pokemon may want to get closer to people.

          >I guess Pokémon must get friendly with people because they really want to. If they didn’t, they’d probably just escape the pastures and run.

Pokemon are their core are like dogs, they're creatures designed to be naturally close to humans in the same way dogs are in the real world. Tajiri in the manga compares Pokemon to pets, especially cats and dogs. He calls Pokemon innocent and friendly just like pets, when he envisions Pokemon battles he sees them like two dog owners allowing their dogs to fight. He also envsions Wild Pokemon, not as monster, but as being more like wild animals like lions and tigers:

Pokemon were never meant to be scary monsters.

In Arceus even if Pokemon attack you and the backdrop for Kamado is that they burned down his village this is treated more like an attack by a wild animal more so than scary and aggresive monsters, from an NPC:

          >At the end of the day, Pokémon are wild creatures. It’s normal for some to trust us and for others to treat us as enemies.

Even so plenty of side quests in Arceus shows that as long as one has love for Pokemon, they will love one back and they're easily domesticated this way. The Mr. Mime side-quest, the bidoof one, the one with the wild chansey, and even the drifloon one which shows the drifloon meant no harm towards the child as you later see them together. Once people start to learn more about Pokemon their bonds grow closer.

Pokemon was inspired by Tajiri love of bug collecting, a love of adventure, exploring and learning the natural world and a love of nature.

Nope, real animals don't go on genocidally destructive rampages against humans. For that game, Gamefreak turned them into monsters, "terrifying creatures", in an effort to attract the Monster Hunter audience, while ridiculously attempting to keep the "cute animal friend" theme as well.

youre a fricking idiot, pokedex entries since gen 1 mention certain pokemon like gyrados going on rampages and razing entire cities down, pokemon being potentially dangerous has always been a factor, this is not a new occurrence.
              >real animals don't go on genocidally destructive rampages against humans.
havent there been multiple incidents of show elephents going berserk and tearing through a whole ass town?

Either way this argument is worthless, the other anon is right, pokemon as a whole are wild animals you can catch and befriend if you're nice to them, some pokemon have very vicious temperaments but even they can be kind of raised well or even treated well after being caught, the series has literally always worked like this and legends arceus drives the point home by both making it canon that literal pokejesus wants humans to catch pokemon, and because the whole game is humans treating pokemon like actual monsters to living side by side with them after getting to know them.

                >pokedex entries since gen 1 mention certain pokemon
Certain Pokemon, not Pokemon in general, which is what happened with Kamado. "Pokemon" killed his people. Not a rampaging Gyarados or something, just "Pokemon". It is now canon that Pikachu will break into someone's home, maul his children, and then electrocute his wife, all because his primal mind decided their home was in his territory. Thanks to Gamefreak's greedy quest to increase marketability, Pokemon will be a darker, less friendly series for all eternity.
                >havent there been multiple incidents of show elephents going berserk and tearing through a whole ass town?
No, there has never been a single incident of any group of animals genociding a village.
Strictly relegating Pokemon to pets and beasts homogenizes the franchise, cuts off story opportunities, stagnates the series and loses money.

you interpreting Kamado's intentionally vague backstory as a basis for saying 'literally any and all are Pokemon going around committing genocide because, uhhh, Monster Hunter," shows how devoted you are to arguing in bad faith and I don't really feel like committing to a reply chain right now, so I'll just leave the thread with "youre moronic". >literally any and all are Pokemon going around committing genocide
Pokemon are presented as a collective, and they're spoken of as a collective when the characters talk about how dangerous they are or what they did to Kamado. So yes, they're a collective of dangerous and violent creatures, that's right.

                Anonymous

But that's just wrong, they're referred to collectively as a kind of creature, not as a collective. Anyone with a brain can see that a Starly doesn't pose as much of a threat as a Gyarados, which has been repeatedly mentioned in the Pokedex as capable of destroying cities. Not to mention that the Canalave myths already provided the background for Pokemon being violent toward humans.
                >"If you bear your sword to bring harm upon us, with claws and fangs, we will exact a toll."
                >"From your kind we will take our toll, for it must be done."
                >"Done it must be to guard ourselves and for it, I apologize."
Combine this with Kamado being an unreliable narrator and there's really no issue here. You're pretending as if the entire nature of the Pokemon world was turned on its head because of a single event that we know almost nothing about. It's nonsense.

Elephants are spiteful and constantly lash out against humans. There's one that killed a woman, and then rampaged through her funeral. Chimps also engage in organized group violence against each other, protect their turf and raid each other and even try to hide their tracks

Never before had a Pokemon game said that Pokemon COLLECTIVELY descend upon villages to kill every man, woman and child within them. And real animals don't do that either. When's the last time you read about a pack of bears and wolves collectively exterminating a village?

                >Thanks to Gamefreak's greedy quest to increase marketability, Pokemon will be a darker, less friendly series for all eternity.

The knowledge that Pikachu, as a Pokemon, is capable of savagely exterminating villages with his Pokemon friends will doubtlessly lower many children's capacity to enjoy him as a character. I don't find this scary, I just think it's sad.

Don't underestimate Gamefreak's lack of artistic cohesion. The dex entries are just something Gamefreak lets their interns shit out. The designers, like Sugimori, have admitted to outright ignoring it when it doesn't follow corporate guidelines. For example, even though the pokedex says some Pokemon are spirits, they're all actually just normal biological beings in the series. And even though the pokedex says some Pokemon, like Dragonite and Alakazam, have human intellect or greater, they're still just presented as subhuman animals in the series.

                Anonymous

Pokémon have always been meant to be closer to "subhuman animals" than anything else. Tajiri vision of Pokémon envisioned them as being like cats and dogs, creatures that are naturally affectionate towards humans especially dogs and are naturally live with humans. In fact at one point Tajiri rewrote the whole script of the games, and I suspect it's at this point where Pokémon abandoned some concepts such as Pokémon and real critters co-existing among other things. I suspect the 1996 guide holds part of the old vision.

Bro, you really underestimate the killing intent of that horse, it ate people but killed for fun
The lions are infamous because not just how bold they were but the sheer magnitude of victims to a point the project the people were working on almost got canned, the tigers are mostly out of revenge but they did went after other humans in that area not for predatory purposes just to kill humans, no cattle was harmed and they didn't ate their victims
Wolves are more contentious, villages have to be displaced multiple times because of how bad shit got, the "there are no wolves in Russia" policy is infamous because of how widespread it got

No. Sugimori said otherwise in an interview and it's talked about in the manga as well. Sugimori designed Pokémon as friendly beasts and thus used real animals as the main inspiration for Pokémon, which is still true to this day. Tajiri was pushing for much friendlier looking designs and that's why they also hired 3 other artists.

from the very same panel you provided it sounds like they wanted pokemon to be capable of being both (feral or domesticated), not just cuddly pets 24/7

I believe that panel describes the shift in attitude towards Pokémon. Tajiri in his mind imagines Pokémon as being more like animals than monsters in his mind, creating two separate spheres for Pokémon, that being the wild and domestic. People here get mad at me when I compare Pokémon to dogs but you have the man who came up with the concept doing as such. This why Pokémon in the domesticated sphere take up heavily after real domesticated animals like dogs, from the food they eat in the anime, to their actions in the games like barking and chewing random things, to even the players interaction with them like playing fetch. Pokémon at their core are dogs, they're modeled after creatures that are naturally affectionate towards humans. This also coincides with what Shudo talked about in his blog about the development of the early anime such as being adamant that Pokémon were the only animals in the Pokémon universe, being told that ghost Pokémon have nothing to do with ghost, this strips ghost Pokémon of their mystifying elements, and him saying that he couldn't use real animals as part of a gag because there was no equivalent. To me this all shows what I've been saying all along, Pokémon are fantastical critters and this manga, Shudo's blog and the 2012 guide all tell us this from behind the scenes.

Modern Pokemon are coded as more than mere beasts.

And? I've stressed enough times that is a common thing in almost all fiction. Does courage using a computer stop him from being a dog? No. Pokémon are constructed as natural creatures and they evoke that by their actions and the way they're presented. Again Tajiri in the manga, which by the way is official, compares Pokémon to cats and dogs. His vision for Pokémon battles was like two dog owners allowing their dogs to fight, and I don't need to stress again how abundant domesticated animal imagery is transplanted into the Pokémon themselves.

Pokémon will never be what you want it to be. At it's core Pokémon is about learning and exploring the natural world, it appeals to a child's imagination. Beneath all the fantastical elements it's really a series about interacting and learning about the natural world and the critters that inhabit it. In the prologue for the manga Tajiri, as a child, is shown going bug catching but he imagines Pokémon while out in the field. The epilogue for the manga ends with a child seeing a sparrow and thinking it's a Pokémon, appealing to the child's imagination and getting him interested in learning about our natural wolrd using a fantasy one as a vehicle. Indeed in the manga Tajiri writes that Pokémon should evoke a sense of natural curiosity. I've met biologists who became interested in their field thanks to Pokémon. The series will never ever become the inanity you people want it to be, Pokémon has been constructed to be a certain way since the get-go and now you even have the words of the very people who created the series. Learn to stick to your own mirages.

Strictly relegating Pokemon to pets and beasts homogenizes the franchise, cuts off story opportunities, stagnates the series, loses money, makes it less interesting to children, and offers no real benefits whatsoever.

Pokemon is the highest grossest franchise in all of history, having a gap of 30 billion over hello kitty while also being a much younger franchise. It's not losing anyone money. Pokémon has mass appeal being able to produce a sense of adventure and exploration as well as the Pokémon themselves being distant yet very familiar creatures due to the way they are constructed. Verily so, Pokémon being the master of cute creature design and constructing Pokémon in a familiar light has, in my opinion, allowed the series to flourish. Tajiri vision of Pokémon, based primarily around his own childhood and interactions with nature, has resonated with millions of people. The panel where Sugimori ask Tajiri of the nature of Pokémon, that is them being monsters and such, and Tajiri mind shifting away from that and into our own natural world shows a stroke of genius. By decreasing the monster aspect of Pokémon and forging them as more familiar creatures it allowed the Pokémon themselves to have a beloved and familiar aspect that resonates with us in the real world. This is, for example, what Shudo talks about in his blog when explaining what Pokémon are, he calls them ideal creatures for children.

I don't think they are meant to be just animals with powers or at least not all of them, and it's because of Pokemon like Zoroark who are able to convey their sentience via their illusions or telepathy and while it could be exclusive to certain Pokemon and others are more akin to regular animals, that still means that they can't all be put under the same umbrella.

It's only a matter of time before we find out that humans are an invasive species to the world of Pokemon.
That they vary so greatly in intelligence/sapience makes putting them in balls (instead of just recruiting them or something) seem kinda weird. I know I'm saying nothing new here, but it gets weirder the more stuff like this we see be treated as normal in this world.

Gamefreak knows that if they do anything experimental, if they do anything to more deeply explore Pokemon's place in their world and their relationship with humanity, bugmen will start shrieking "NOOOOO, STOOOOOP, POKEMON ARE JUST LE HECKIN WHOLESOME PWNSOME FUNNEE DOGGOS". That's why it's important to ridicule people who act like that.

Just remember the "oh uh they LIKE being taken from the wild and trapped inside balls and made to fight actually 🙂 they LOVE it :)" cop out shit they did. The minute someone questions it they're depicted as an animal abuser or lied to.
Honestly just owning it that pokemkn is filled with self interested humans who care more about sport than wildlife, or saying domesticated life is just better for them, wouldn't be great but what we got is just bottom of the barrel lazy writing

Pokemon is part of a conspiracy to turn kids into furries.
Step 1: have a series about a world filled with magical animals.
Step 2: make some of them humanlike, but still animals.
Step 3: convince kids that if the humanlike Pokemon make them feel funny, they're no different than a beast fricking furry.
That's why it's important to teach kids that it's perfectly natural to feel attracted to HUMANLIKE Pokemon. The furries are trying to convert YOUR KIDS by using Pokemon as a gateway.
