Possible acidental magical realm? What do you think?

Ok so my players really like Lovecraft eldritch horror stuff, I personally find it silly and hate that, tentacles, Cthulhu and all that jazz is just so played out that it loses all impact imo. But they keep asking for a game like that.

Last week while returning home I saw this cloud, it was yellowish because of the sun set but it was a storm cloud so it was very dark and flashing with internal ligthinging. I had never seen anything like that before it looked so beautiful but evil and dangerous at the same time.

So I had this ideia to make the Elder God or whatever be an evil yellow cloud, and after its's summoned and wreaks havoc it rains down an acid yellow rain that corrupts and mutates.

It felt to me very impersonal and foreboding kind of evil, almost like a radioactive force of nature, I really liked the ideia, I talk about it to my roommate (he doesn't play or like rgs but I like to tell him my campaining palns) and he was like

"Dude, I think they will think you are into pee"

And then i struck me... I remembered that stupid comic... And now I'm afraid my players will think I have a pee fetish or some shit... I know it's silly but I really liked the ideia... Should I go trough with it... Would you think it was a magical realm if you DM did that?

tldr: My ideia for a lovecraft god was an evil yellow cloud that rained yellow rain that was mutagenic and evil, I'm afraid players will think it's pee and joke about it.

      OP, you are silly

Change the color of the void to black or grey and the color of the acid to green or black.

He said that, "Just make it purple or red I dunno"

But red rain is just so... generic...

And purple is so like silly.

Yellow at least in my views feels and looks wrong, un-natural, corruptible, toxic and radioactive... The feelings I was looking for.

I wouldn't think piss. My first thought is of those sulphur miners in Indonesia or acid runoff from mines. Something unnatural anyway.
Especially if you describe it as thick, opaque yellow rather than golden and transparent.

I agree. Other colours don't seem to carry the same vibe.

Legitimately this is a maturity issue. If you are not describing it as piss and they come to that conclusion and try to clown on it, that's a reflection of them. Just don't call it a golden shower.

What you did in OP was fine, anons just being autistic, separating paragraphs is basic English. But what you just did here spacing after a green text is not ok.

It's a newbie thing, done to try to fit in, badly. Paragraph spacing isn't new or "from reddit", we've done it around here since before /tg/ existed. It's kind of like a moron psyop to get people to post unreadable walls of text.

If they’re into Lovecraftian works, they might sooner think of the King in Yellow, if only because the color.

Isn't the king in yellow from a different author? I see people often talking about like he is part of Lovecraft mythos but I don't get it, which book does he appears?

Hastur was created by Ambrose Bierce in his story Haita the Shepherd. In that he was a good God of Shepherds. Later, Robert W Chambers took the name Hastur as well as Carcosa from Bierce’s An Inhabitant of Carcosa and used it in his collection The King in Yellow.

Lovecraft was influenced by that collection and later used the name Hastur and Carcosa in connection with each other in several stories, but he didn’t play a major role. Derleth, when organizing the Mythos, later made Hastur a major figure within the Mythos.

tl;dr: Yes, but later adopted into the Mythos by various authors.

Hastur is my favorite of the gods so I know a lot about him.

Which ones? Cause I read everything Lovecraft with my friends and I don't recal it at all, the only guy in yellow I recal is the priest in the dreamland with a mask.

Whisperer in the Darkness. It only mentions Hastur, the Yellow Sign, and Lake Hali, though those are all intertwined with Hastur. It was really Derleth that gave Hastur the prominence he has now.

Though it wouldn’t surprise me if the Dreamlands Mask Man was also marginally connected given masks are a prominent theme with Hastur too.

Most players joke about everything, it is unavoidable. But if you have an actual cloud of yellow piss rain down on them, you deserve all mockery and suspicion.
So, DO you have a piss fetish?

Make the players travel through a desert so they'll be super thirsty. Then when they try to drink the rain the golden shower goes right in their mouths.

Give them full on, proper, cosmic horror. The actual BBEG isn't some betentacled monster that wants to eat/rape them or drive them insane - it's something completely beyond human understanding, doing something that not even the mad could comprehend, for reasons that would sound like gibberish if it ever deigned to explain them. It will absolute doom everyone and everything to the most horrific and non-heroic fate you can imagine when it has finished; and there isn't a single god damned thing that anyone can do to stop it. The entity they're 'fighting' against is so far beyond them that all of humanity working together against it/them would be about the same as a single bacterium picking a fight with the entirety of NATO, i.e. completely insignificant to that point where it's just not worth taking the time to even notice it's happening. The closest they'll get to a victory in that campaign is getting to explain what's happening to an NPC without being laughed at or asked if they're having a bad trip/need medical help.

Granted that is not going to be a particularly engaging or exciting game (the prevailing theme and tone should be complete hopelessness, ignorance, impotence, and fear after all) but that's what cosmic horror's like. When they tell you that the game is fricking miserable and they'd like you to let them blow up some shoggoths again tell them that you're really getting into the concept now and you'd like to keep going. When that answer disappoints them ask them if they'd prefer to switch to another genre.

You see, that's why I dislike Lovecraft thing, it's either "hur hur tentacles" or way too abstract to be actually scary.

And I have read Lovecraft and none, none of his stories actually give this impression of "Evil so large doesn't even notice humans" all the gods seems so close to humanity imo.

        Anonymous

Lovecraft was an interesting author, if only for his being a reaction against Gothic Horror - but you've hit on one of his biggest problems there. If you want a horror that is beyond human understanding it's almost impossible to explain that to a reader/viewer/player without it becoming so abstract that it's boring right up to the point where everything's dead.

If your group wants to fight tentacled horrors from beyond the mountains of madness then something like Dark Heresy (or any of the 40k RPGs) will probably give you a better experience than anything explicitly Lovecraft themed/branded. If they want to be confronted by completely unstoppable evil that's too big to even notice them (what actual cosmic horror should be) then they either need therapy or a homebrew game that wouldn't be any fun at all for anyone else.

But my issue is that to me these tropes associated with Lovecraft have more to do with what people SAY LOVECRAFT is about than real Lovecraft stuff.

Like I can think of what 3 characters that go mad when seeing an abomination, and they were already kind of in the deep end anyway, and people often think that going mad just by looking at the thing is a Lovecraft thing but to me is not, it's rare in his writting.

The other trope is the Gods being so big, powerful and old they don't care or notice humanity, I have NEVER seen it, like at all, everything I recall the gods were directly influencing and literally talking with the characters. Can't think of one god that didn't do that in his work. Even Yog.

That was the point I was trying (and clearly failing) to make. He couldn't have set up his stories to run that way, or they'd have been the most fricking tedious things on earth to actually read. He needed to have everything, up to and including the unknowable elder gods, interacting with the world and the characters in a way that they (and thus the reader) could understand.

I see. Funny, cause when plaayers say they want a Lovecraft inspired campaing, they THINK they want that but what they actually want is the bastardized version of Lovecraft by social media, cause Lovecraft itself is not "Lovecraftian" enough for them since none of them actually read the damn short sortires.
