I agree that "the dark souls of blank" is a dumb buzzphrase, but this is just a problem with journalists though.
imagine the "halo of party games" or "third person half-life" or the "fortnite of rts games"...
these arnt indictments of a game's quality, theyre just shorthand that passes for insight in the eternally juvenile game journalism sphere.
>dark souls of ______
there was a period of 2 months after dark souls released where that was used unironically by journalists. It was only ever mocked and was poorly received. It's been 10 years now and it has only ever been a shitpost. If it never existed there would have just been another shitpost to take the place.
I love it and have fond memories but probably Halo. The big console shooter, two weapon limit, regen "health".
As much as I hate the fanboys and as much as I greatly prefer other games, Dark Souls was a force of good in the industry. It challenged the broader appeal, hand holding, dumbing down of the industry and showed that traditional and difficult games still had a place. It succeeded where games like Ninja Gaiden II and DMC4 did not.
maybe if multiple people are calling you out then it's true. Learn to talk and form an opinion without constantly using buzzword terms you heard on here
It really should have stayed 2D the quality of games in terms of depth & content gradually progressed each year, until the N64 gen where it regressed big time once it went 3D & lacked most of the content the 2D games had
Probably one of the first online shooters, because it created a terrible culture that persists today, and just gives all the worst people something to group up around. Or at least the first game to use chat, since it just turned toxic and stayed toxic for decades. Whatever the big Xbox live game was.
not a video game but marvel movies, especially ones after the first avengers movie
the marvel cinematic universe and joss whedon have basically ruined most character writing in video games
everything is quips, quips, quips constantly and never ending
if I was forced to put a videogame instead of a movie here I would point the blame at portal 2 (not its own fault) or Borderlands 2 (actual dogshit, just mass-market dogshit that caught on for some reason)
1993 - Mortal Kombat
1997 - Final Fantasy VII
1998 - Metal Gear Solid
1998 - Half-Life
2001 - Halo Combat Evolved
2001 - Grand Theft Auto III
2004 - World of Warcraft
2005 - Resident Evil 4
2005 - God of War
2006 - Gears of War
2007 - Assassin’s Creed
2007 - Bioshock
2007 - Call of Duty 4
2007 - Mass Effect
2007 - Uncharted Drake’s Fortune
2009 - Batman Arkham Asylum
2011 - Dark Souls
2011 - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
2011 - Minecraft
2013 - Gone Home
2013 - The Last of Us
2013 - Depression Quest
2017 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Anything else?
Kaizo mario for being the virtual genesis of intentionally shitty to play games that was interpreted as "skills". As well off as starting off a whole generation of homosexualry of morons that think their ability to tolerate shit is a positive thing.
So many garbage games would hilariously get "filtered" as the trash they are but manage to survive from morons that can use it to pretend their some elite caste of gamers and not just sunken cost frickers that can't accept that they aren't actually as cool as they think they are.
Arkham Asylum's 'freeflow' combat and detective vision essentially ruined a great deal of subsequent combat systems and stealth games.
Without freeflow, developers wouldn't be falling back on highly tethered animation routines which undermine spacing/attack ranges. Arguably the influence of Souls rectified this trend, but it originally always was the norm with old character action games/beat em ups.
No detective vision would force games to more naturally highlight things in the environment, and put greater emphasis on level design in allowing enemy routines to be visible/avoidable. No seeing through walls in Tenchu.
A lot of people don't want to admit it since the game itself is great, but its popularity shifted the industry into focusing on high budget AAA movie games. Studios quit pumping out experimental and innovative AA titles to try and replicate MGS' storytelling instead.
DOTA. I mean original DOTA, on WC3 custom games. That means no fricking decade of MOBA drowning out every other game. No cancerous LoL. No embarrassing DOTA 2. Casuals take longer to flood into the video game scene.
Without Warcraft III then there wouldn't have been a WoW which means MMOs would not become so popular, and without tower defense we wouldn't have gotten fortnite, and no fortnite would mean no epic games store. Removing WC3 would prevent a ton of cancer, actually.
Persona 5
fortnite
>basically no impact on the industry
>"wow it would have been so much better if it didn't exist!"
>incoherent schizo babble
Uhm...ok?
You might be the schzio if you think what he said was incomprehensible
>moron learns how to operate a computer
>Replies to me on Ganker.com
Uhmm.. Okay???
aw sweet a schizo thread
Just not having to hear "the dark souls of..." would be huge

maybe if multiple people are calling you out then it's true. Learn to talk and form an opinion without constantly using buzzword terms you heard on here
nah. everyone seems to forget how casual every series was becoming before this game came out
Dark Souls save videogames you fricking zoomer.
oh the irony
it was funny to see like 20 different game studios miss what was good about dark souls and sink their companies lol
easy
FF would have been better now if it had remained in 2D & never made the Jump
>Gaming would have been better now if it had remained in 2D & never made the Jump
FTFY
It really should have stayed 2D the quality of games in terms of depth & content gradually progressed each year, until the N64 gen where it regressed big time once it went 3D & lacked most of the content the 2D games had
Agreed. FF7 left the series chasing a high they could never match again.
FFVII.
Donkey Kong
Really, all shitendo games, but that's the one that pretty much sparked everything.
tennis for two
wrong question.
the real answer is NO SMARTPHONES.
I know this is bait but what game has Portal even influenced?
Portal 2
the
Pong
DooM
Licensed music. We should get rid of it all so we don't have to worry about DMCA when streaming
Probably one of the first online shooters, because it created a terrible culture that persists today, and just gives all the worst people something to group up around. Or at least the first game to use chat, since it just turned toxic and stayed toxic for decades. Whatever the big Xbox live game was.
League of Legends or Call of Duty
Pubg
The correct answer
Fifa it introduced lootboxes on a large scale to gaming
Warcraft 3, more specifically the DotA mod for Warcraft 3.
Earthbound. I like it but sorry Ness you caused more shit than youre worth.
Assassin's Creed 2
Video games.
not a video game but marvel movies, especially ones after the first avengers movie
the marvel cinematic universe and joss whedon have basically ruined most character writing in video games

That popular good game that many people enjoyed, because I'm a bitter joyless frick.
warcraft 3 and pubg
Call of Duty 4 obviously.
Breath of the Wild. Would result in a lot of other games never coming into existence.
1993 - Mortal Kombat
1997 - Final Fantasy VII

Anything else?
You're missing League of Legends, DotA, PUBG, and World of Warcraft
>taking the time to type this out
damn this homie hates videogames lol
Based npc blindly worshipping corporations and thinking their his friend
nah i just have fun playing videogames, buddy
>Ha you like video game? You're an NPC!
Moron
FF7
MGS
AC
COD
RE4
These 5 did the most damage

Ah you didn’t make it passed the first shell jump did you?
easy
Starcraft
World of warcraft
DOTA
Dark souls
Pick any CoD or Battlefield title.
>A world where the FPS genre moves forward, not backwards
Can you just imagine?
Skyrim
World of Warcraft
I'm sure both have been said ITT a thousand times, but I'm saying it again.
Frick both of these games fans, willingly eating shit and then forcing that shit lifestyle on everyone else.
Arkham Asylum's 'freeflow' combat and detective vision essentially ruined a great deal of subsequent combat systems and stealth games.

What game popularized quest markers & scripted cinematic set pieces?
First and above everything else DoTA and its offsprings should've stayed ideas on people too lazy to see them through.
A lot of people don't want to admit it since the game itself is great, but its popularity shifted the industry into focusing on high budget AAA movie games. Studios quit pumping out experimental and innovative AA titles to try and replicate MGS' storytelling instead.
Half Life
hi alf
hi bert 🙂
Undertale.
the one that popularized DLC
Oblivion
The Last of Us
fortnite or minecraft
frick all the casuals who got into gaming with that shit
I usually say WoW, but in thinking it over some more, the correct answer is probably GTA: San Andreas.
DOTA. I mean original DOTA, on WC3 custom games. That means no fricking decade of MOBA drowning out every other game. No cancerous LoL. No embarrassing DOTA 2. Casuals take longer to flood into the video game scene.
DayZ
World of Warcraft is the only answer.
So many good games that took shitty systems from wow.
Games as a service basically came about partly inspired by WoWs online sub.
Skyrim
>people saying Dark Souls and FFVII
Are these normalgays trying to fit in by hating something popular?
Yes
>NOOO POPULAR MEANS IT'S AUTOMATICALLY GOOD DON'T CRITICIZE IT OR EVEN DISLIKE IT!!!
you seem upset
If Warcraft III wasn't made we wouldn't have:
MOBA genre
Tower defense genre.
what else
reforged.
I get that people hate MOBAs, but I completely forget they exist until Ganker starts crying about them, so I don't know where all the hate comes from.
Without Warcraft III then there wouldn't have been a WoW which means MMOs would not become so popular, and without tower defense we wouldn't have gotten fortnite, and no fortnite would mean no epic games store. Removing WC3 would prevent a ton of cancer, actually.
I never thought of that, true
I’m convinced. No Fortnite and Zoomer multiplayer games, no League of Legends and no troony MMOs would do the world a service
Oblivion
Imagine if horse armor never existed and scammy microtransactions were kept in Korean mmos
Advanced Warfare
Literally garbage game.
World of Warcraft started basically everything gay about gaymen
Grand Theft Auto V and Fate/stay night. Both are very popular games that have prominent ~~*bisexual*~~ representation.
you guys have a hard-on for the moronic IV dlc and the main character is a homosexual
I don't know what makes you think I have a problem with homosexual people.
COD 4. It ruined AAA gaming for an entire console generation
>for a entire console generation
you mean for gaming
ASShomosexualS
