Ubisoft is one of the three biggest third party publishers alongside EA and Activision (technically no longer third party). Of the three, they used to be considered the most likely to squeeze out something decent. However, they are rarely a trailblazer when it comes to predatory business practices, and usually have to play catchup with the other two. Dragging their feet on things like this loses them cash and often leaves them at the tail end of trends.

Their yearly franchises are also extremely repetitive. Now, FIFA and CoD slop are also similar from game to game, but the former has an audience completely divorced from the rest of gaming and the latter is still treated like a golden goose by its owners. Far Cry and AssCreed are normieslop but they have more overlap with a traditional gaming audience than EA sports games and CoD, so public criticism of the content might actually be relevant to sales.

Lastly Ubisoft is the most adamant about practicing what they preach when it comes to pozzing the living frick out of themselves. Activision does it pretty much all for show but Ubisoft is basically run by HR ladies and diversity hires who should not be making video games. The competency levels are at an all-time low and that means dumping more and more money into projects to make up for the inefficiency.

Ubisoft isn't one of the biggest.

They ARE the biggest. Ubisoft unironically has over 21000 employees worldwide. Despite this their output is fricking trash and they spend more time and money chasing trends than setting them.

This petty bullshit forced me to get Anno 1800 on the ubisoft store but I only realized it existed years after release, which is fine since it's one of those cancerous season pass business models anyway. They could at least have the courtesy of transferring ubistore purchases to steam before going under.

How hard is it to just make a competing storefront that's not shit?

I guess Valve stopped making games for a reason, apparently running a competent storefront is hard.

        Anonymous

It's really not surprising considering the only reason publishers leave Steam to begin with is specifically to avoid Valve taking a cut so they can make more money. None of these publishers created their own storefront with the ambition of making an actually good storefront, their goal from the get go was to make a bit more money off every sale, hence only the minimum amount of effort is put in while they bank on their IPs being popular enough for consumers to be willing to put up with their new shitty stores. Funniest thing is how they try to make Valve seem like the greedy ones even though the cut they take is industry standard and the same as Nintendo/Sony/MS do on their stores. Those poor AAA publishers just can't survive on a PC storefront taking the same cut as everyone else.

The first one sold really well, but it released in 2017 when the Switch's library was much smaller and it's constantly on sale. You can easily get the complete edition of the first game for $20. Not many people are going to spend $60 on a sequel when they got their fill of the first game.

What do you mean? EA still has EA Sports and Respawn under their belt. As long as they have that, they'll always be in the TOP 3. Ubi was close to EA and Activision but just too moronic to keep up.

PES doesn't exist anymore, it's called eFootball now and it ALSO ended up tanking the franchise since it turns out that yes, the brand is indeed important when 90% of your audience is NPCs.

asscreed initially sold a decent amount so ubisoft being homosexuals milked the frick out of it with yearly release until fatigue set in, then they stopped releasing it yearly to try and fix the company's budget

They've made some bad choices with game design overall, with a few exceptions. For instance, Assassin's Creed is one of their better bright spots and FarCry (to an extent). I'm playing Valhalla now and it really shows a nice step forward in the design making the game less full of bullshit and easier to tell what you actually WANT to do.

Valhalla basically fixes some of the mechanics issues of the previous AC games like Odyssey (which had a hideous ability/skill system cumbersome as frick. You have to give up combat melee slots for stealth-only stuff? ) and polished the entire experience. Valhalla is also very well supported with new expansions and updates- for all the other stupid shit Ubi has done, I have to give them credit for being one of the few that has "old school" expansion DLC for Assassin's Creed games (and a few others) plus free updates with new content. However shit is optional and doesn't require grinding through it. For instance they offered a new "river raid" DLC campaign as a free update and further expanded it when the expansions came out - if you liked the river raiding and feeling like a viking looting and pillaging, you could do it and unlock some new gear in the process along with progression of your raiders, cosmetics etc. Don't like it? The only thing you lose is the gear from the campaigns and its neat but its not major story stuff or best in slot etc.

Maybe Ubi has like one studio learning shit but besides that, they're also one of the only ones that have a non-shit subscription in Ubi+ = newest games, best versions +DLC on release etc. They just need to make a wider variety of titles, well. Oh and the delay of the Prince of Persia thing is unfortunate, guess the pajeets screwed it up which you'd think this would be a title they'd do pretty well regarding given the whole persian/mughal influence.
