Generally if components have lasted that long, they're going to keep on going. Like cars with old engine blocks that are so worn in at this point they'll never stop running.

Experience is different than hearsay. Work was being cheap and bought me a origin pc to replace my aging workstation. I don’t do 3D work but do a lot of visualizations for monitoring and metrics. Hardly taxing the old girl. Sounded like a 9mm when it blew. Origin was going to take 2 days to replace it with the same model 700 so I went to Best Buy and got an 850x instead. That way it would still be under warranty and less likely to explode if I was doing a little work.

Well, I had two of them premium gold standard ones that where the highest end models they had at the time. Both were Seasonic rebrands and both lasted less than a year. The second one especially like maybe 6 months before it started acting up. Didn't even bother RMAing that shit a second time and went for another manufacturer. There are products where Corsair is fine - like their RAM used to be good. Think that's what they started out with. But PSUs? Nah. Get that shit out of here. And I've read enough anecdotes about these things failing, sometimes taking other components with them.

I recently had to replace my PSU, it was hitting 10 years by a couple of months. Bought way back when I build a 3770k system.

    Seasonic 1000w Platinum.

It wasn't an outright failure, but it was failing. Games would BSOD anytime the 2080ti GPU needed to kick into high clocks.

Bought a new Corsair HX1200 due to the rumors about the 4090 being a power hog.

      Anonymous

1200w wont be enough. You need 1600w

        Anonymous

I'm doubtful of that, the 3090Ti supposedly used the same power design of the 4090. Safe to assume power draw will be similar if not the same

        Anonymous

        >sli/crossfire
does that shit even exist anymore? There's practically zero reason to use more than a single gpu in a system since you can't have a dedicated gpu per monitor, allowing for overall better performance than one driving all 3 and the other just sitting there looking pretty doing nothing but using power.

          Anonymous

No, multi GPU systems still exist though, for more specialist work.

For gaming Multi-GPU is a dead meme.
It has uses in other sectors still.

for 3d rendering shit or the likes which use workstation cards that are designed for such an intended usecase though, right?

              Anonymous

Doesn't have to be workstation cards.

You may be right if this was 5 years ago, but the 3080/3090 series have known issues with power spikes that cause system stability issues with the only way around the problem is to not have a PSU run a near full capacity. 1000w is pretty much required if you have the appropriate CPU and paired with those cards and are also overclocking.

          Anonymous

Name one game that justifies overclocking a high end card.

            Anonymous

I've been trying to overclock my GB 3080 Aorus Extreme and in 99% of the games I can lower the power limit to like 80% and still get the same performance as overclocking it out the ass at 120% power limit.
That and picking an AMD cpu 2 years ago has made me sad that overclocking seems to be on it's way out.

          Anonymous

Back when Vega came out this was an issue too.
Eventually Seasonic admitted it was their fault and released revised models that no longer trigger protections.
So the answer is to wait for PSU manufacturers to get their shit together.
