I've played this game at the highest level which used to be called NAL(Notorious Arena League) and SoT is one of the highest skill ceiling games of all time thats hamstrung by morons like you crying about ship sizes. Play the new pvp mode you only match against similar size boats or otherwise get a good duo partner for sloop or improve your gameplay. Learn how to reliably deckshot, Weapons cancel, etc. If you are solo slooping you better have a blunder equipped and learn how to position your ship regarding the wind and how to navigate correctly. No reason a sloop should ever get caught unless its against an incredibly skilled brigantine which is far and wide one of the harder boats to encounter at that skill level. Get good you fricking wild rose playing bot.

Are you the homosexuals in the sloop me and my homies in our brig just chased across the map while you ran away after shooting us? If so lmao get dunked on b***h baby. Ya got owned.

Boarding and spawn camping kinda ruined this game for me. The ship combat is pretty well designed imo, where smaller ships (1-2 people) actually have a chance to destroy 4 person galleons and vice versa... Especially given how much planning and maneuvering is involved, it's more strategic than it is twitch-reaction shooting game shit. But it's ultimately thrown away by the fact that boarding allows the game to instead become a bunny hopping twitch reaction shooter, and spawning works in a way where you can be killed while your screen is still loading.

While it's possible to avoid being boarded, the best way to do that is to just consistently sail away and not participate in the combat, which is boring and lame.

      >But it's ultimately thrown away by the fact that boarding allows the game to instead become a bunny hopping twitch reaction shooter
It's not even that, it's the fact that the blunderbuss is a 1-tap and the netcode, which has been dogshit since the game's launch, allows pretty much any shot that's in the relative ballpark of another player to nuke 100% of their HP

It's literally just whoever manages to clown the other player with the blunderbuss first. There's a lot of intrigue with ship contact, whether it's hindering movement or griefing with curse balls, but it turns into a meme the moment you get into any form on-foot combat.

Yeah not sure why people fight to the death to keep 1-shot blunderbuss, it's not even hard to do, I literally do it unintentionally all the time, if they're gonna have a one shot mechanic at least have it require some trick beyond "shot at them when close"

it's moronic because it makes boarding insanely deathy, if you look away from the ladder for literally 5 seconds that's enough time for them to get a kill in

Maybe I'm a moron or maybe its just netcode bullshit but for some reason I have never been able to get consistent 1-shot kills with the blunderbuss. I can literally have the thing pressed up against another player's chest while aiming and the dude still lives. Literally the only time it seems to work fully is if the dude's just static.

I just recently bought my first three ships actually.

The game can be really comfy, and the visuals are really, really underrated, there's a good variety of various sun levels, weather, wind, waves, and it all looks great.

The game really feels like it's meant to be a "pirate simulator" as opposed to a PvP arcade game, so I think the devs ever openly pandering to people who live only for that was a mistake, and the player base in general is -surprisingly- awful considering how small it is, it's mostly red neck boomers, third worlders and children.

Yeah blunderbuss really needs a nerf, it's simply the best option for both PvP AND PvE and there's no reason for it, simply make it do like 95% of total heath at its peak

SoT is extremely hostile, its dedicated population is mostly just shit stirrers who only want to kill other players and steal their shit because there's no downside to doing PvP over PvE.

There are certain PvP games, like SoT, which exist to pander to people who are incapable of playing actual competitive games, so they allow you to stack numbers in order to get that much desperately sought after dopamine they can't get on their own through a legitimate competitive game like Street Fighter or dota2

      Anonymous

If you get caught in a sloop you legit need to start playing a different game.

        Anonymous

I don't understand your obsession with sloops, you can be out numbered on any ship, the alliance system shouldn't be a thing, especially since everyone gets a cut from the treasure so there is no downside to doing it. Objectively the best play is to ally with as many people as possible, that isn't balanced.

          Anonymous

Doesn't really mean anything, it being organic or not doesn't change the results, not to mention as said before there's no real downside to allying, when there absolutely should be.

Of course its best to play with an ally, but that doesn't mean you're not also taking a risk by doing it. Allies only get 50%, so they could very easily betray you if they want more. Forming an alliance by itself is already dangerous, as many players shoot first and ask questions later. People in PvP games are inherently paranoid. I've allied with players many times, and only a handful of those times did I feel like I could really trust them.

I've watched videos of 3 man crews getting ganked by 12-man alliances, to pretend like it's reasonable or possible for smaller crews to survive that is hilarious fanboyism that won't allow people to admit it's simply not a balanced game

      Anonymous

Reminder that 12-man alliances can only happen organically. That's literally just bad luck if they're against you. Its not like you and 11 of your pals can queue together.

I think that's OP's entire point though, it's a pvp game where skill takes a back seat to numbers or "luck" as you'd like to put it, it's poor game design

12 man alliance is such a ridiculously rare thing to possibly see

why is it possible to begin with though?
loot should not be shared among the entire alliance to any degree, there should be some actual tangible downside in order to balance it

sea of thieves has two (2) pvp interactions
    1. one player gets a jump on the other, sweeps the frick out of them, combat is over within 60 seconds
    2. one player fails to get the jump, both players go into semi-active combat, it turns into an hour-long pissing contest depending on who runs out of cannonballs first (or whichever player doesn't have the inventory editing hacks to give themselves more)

The open crew system is so fricking bad haha, a game where you have a literal 50/50 coin toss chance to get a griefer their only tool for the captain to use is a vote system in order to send them into a jail cell.
Mind you, they can still throw fire bombs from this cell.
Mind you, it has a limit of 1 person, so if you get 2 trolls, you literally just have to leave the game.
So not only is it very important to have a big crew to make everything easier, they basically created a useless matchmaking system to people solo players together.
    WHAT were they thinking

Nah its pretty good actually, unironically one of the better multiplayer games. If you actively engage there's a lot of friendly people, way more than in other multiplayer games with loot. Just make sure you play with friends not randoms and aren't complete shit at vidya and its a great time.

Season 8 was so bad and full of problems that its exactly why Season 9's trailer is focusing on quality of life and making the game more accessible for people who wanna play casually and not rely on sweaty PvP as the entire gimmick of the season.

Im not saying theyre gonna get rid of the hourglass system like they did with Arena but its obvious its taken a back seat because theres still bullshit like cheating, netcode and hitbox problems destroying this "competitive" experience not just shitty match pacing.
