The fight itself wasn't particularly hard or innovative, just dodge projectiles, kill the summons and shoot him until he dies
But the very concept of his first and third stage were ridiculous enough to get a chuckle out of me.
I died once in that fight just because I was laughing like an idiot.
It's not the best joke in the game, in fact I kinda don't like how it suddenly goes all modern era culture references at the last level, but just the series of events alone got me.
Gotwald was far more clever and generally a better joke as a final boss but I did like how they stepped up the spectacle for the ending.
The second episode boss is the weakest, the Husák-blimp. I think I had more fun cleaning up after the bossfight than in the fight itself.
The level leading up to it was fucking amazing though.

I like it least of the three, but I think there is a couple of banger levels. I really like Točník, Velhartice and Ratibořice, the Babička fight is one of my favorite moments in all of the game.

It's really short and has some issues with ballance and difficulty. Plus the art style does not fit well with a lot of people.
Personally I loved it though, it has some of the most satisfying combat I've seen in these games, and generally very careful design. The weapons are absurdly satisfying and the gore is fantastic, it adds a lot to the experience.
It's a very "quality over quantity" type of experience, essentially every single level has multiple memorable gimmicks, moments or fights, it's constantly thowing some new at you.

I've played a lot of those mods, and aside from a few of them that devolve into slaughter maps later, they're fine, but not necessarily better than Hrot.

HROT's combat is really lacking and combat and level design are why i play boomershooters, and HROT is mid in both departments IMO (its main draw are the intractables and references, which are admittedly cool as fuck), its easy even on very hard and im sick (so my reflexes are degraded).
cap is just zoomer speak for lying/coping, im just being playful by using it, its not serious.
I'll agree with this, even though I liked the game.
Weapons not having an alt-fire to change things a bit is weird and one of the reasons I never noticed that Wine bottles can be thrown as molotovs with RClicking until almost finishing the game.
Explosives are also weird since the Hussar Hand Cannon is just grenades but in a straight line instead of bouncing and the mines require meta knowledge of the map to know when to use them.
The shotgun is probably a good example as well since you have the classic choice between a fast firing weaker shotgun or the slower firing but more damaging and ammo consuming shotgun. Games usually give you these 2 and then pack a level with a mixture of many weak and fast enemies with a few tankier ones and you're suppose to alternate between both depending on what's currently in front of you.
However, the double barreled shotgun just made more sense to pretty much everything and it's not like ammo was scarce enough to justify switching to the other when dealing with dogs and the like.
There's also the kick which is a great move but you can't kick and shoot at the same time so you can't do fancy shit like a close range shotgun blast and a kick to create distance without taking some damage in the cooldown between both moves.
WADs always have the problem that they are essentially the same game but in different maps. It's cool because you get more of the same gameplay you like but somewhere else, however you're still playing the same game anyway.
Sometimes it's cool to try something different because even if it's not as good, at least it's new.

You have a single experience to compare anything to and even then, you'll compare trailers and screenshots to it, you won't even bother to try those games.

Agreed. I enjoyed it for a little bit but the bland aesthetic and terrible level design made me uninstall. It's no DUSK, and it sure as fuck is no Quake.
I thought it was pretty good, if a little tough near the middle because of an almost unreasonably low amount of health pickups. I'm not sure if it's better or worse than dusk though, I certainly got lost in this one more than I did in dusk.
I think that as a game it's weaker than Dusk which just has a lot more stuff - greater enemy variety, more creative levels, bigger and more intricate encounter design, more polish overal, more variety in level gimmicks, assets, and a more interesting movement.
HROT is still mechanically a very simple game with comparatively more basic level design, smaller encounters end so on.
But subjectively I enjoy HROT more, because I fucking love the atmosphere and the humor. It's such a beautiful dive into one mad man's mind and being from the same country, I can relate to so many of his jokes, jabs, references and sentiments.
I'd recommend Dusk first to most people, because the stuff I like most about HROT is shit that will likely get lost in translation, but I sure as hell will replay HROT a lot more than Dusk myself.

I played through it the past few days. It's aggressively ok. The limited color palette is boring. I get the intention, but three episodes of it is lame. Most of the enemies are quake ripoffs, and there isn't enough variety so it gets very repetitive. Enemy sounds were laughable. That's one thing Dusk got really right.
I will say despite heavy "find the key" based gameplay, the levels flowed pretty well and did a good job of telling you where to go. I never used the map and rarely got lost.
