I love Sandy. He still talks about the stories of the games he worked on and answers questions (like Romero) but isn't an egomaniac piece of shit (like Romero). He has firm footing in other interests outside of id endeavors like fantasy and TTRPG, which is a breath of fresh air compared to the sterile dialect of Carmack or entirely removed presence of American or Adrian. The quintessential nerd turned level designer. How he could transcribe Lovecraft writing into playable, atmospheric chunks as well as he did -- I have no idea.

I do love the secret E4 level, and I think his Doom 2 mapping is overhated. But the Spawn enemies are pure agony and half of the levels they're in are as well.

Sandy's just the scapegoat, everyone has some proper average levels to their name.

          There isn't a single Doom/2/Quake Romero level that is below a 7/10

Played it on switch and it's such a great fricking game. I still need to finish the player made bonus levels and campaigns. Thanks for reminding me I'll get to it tardanon.
How's quake II compared to I? Is it ever going to be ported on switch?
And of someone is interested gyro aiming is available and making the game super great to play on pro controller.

Quake 2 is a very different game, I think it's worse than 1 but it's still pretty fun. Instead of a linear progression of maps, you're dropped into a hub world and need to run around it completing several objectives before the next one opens up. The weapons also take forever to switch between.
By the way, the Switch port of Quake has keyboard & mouse support.

Quake 4 is fricking kino, it's got Peter Stormare in it. It's a better game than Doom 3. Anyone who disagrees is a limp wristed homosexual and I could definitely beat them in a fight

prey beats both of those games

      >Quake 4
      >le kino
Reloading, vehicle segments, and waiting for npcs to finish their dialogue so you can continue playing the game is not my idea of kino peregrino.

Yeah. Quake 4 is a better Doom 3. More action focus, less attempts to jumpscare the player (and failing because it was just a lame imp or zombie).

im a huge quakegay but lets not kid ourselves, quake 4 was part of the dark age premonition of slow, boring brown and grey shooters of the the mid to late 00's. quake 4 and doom 3 are literally the same games and it was everything that quake is not.

thats your argument for "quake 4 being kino"? it had peter stormare (which is cool i guess but not that crazy( in it and that its a better game than doom 3 (not a high bar). is that really it?

      It is too brown
      The enemies are too spongey
And hearing my disc drive whirring constantly playing CD audio is unpleasant

Aside from inky black shadows of the Doom 3 engine, I think they hold up just fine.

then it'd just be the same game but called Doom 3 with a reskin on enemies and models

the 3d engine, movement, level design, and the soundtrack were clearly the direction they wanted to go next with their new tech regardless of the IP so it would've only be superficially different

Are you a fan of Nine Inch Nails?

It's not the heavy metal slayer-like riffs of doom. Trent went for a much more eldritch, atmospheric soundtrack to fit a much more eldritch, atmospheric game. Quake's aesthetics are a lot less heavy metal album cover and more lovecraftian nightmare insanity, which, I'll be honest I prefer and people over-exaggerate with how brown it is. Yeah, it's pretty brown but a) it works for the overall atmosphere, and b) no, not every single texture is a fricking shade of brown.

Garbage, one of the most overrated soundtracks of any game
