Question for everyone who actually plays the games

Question: How many mons do you guys typically use when you play through a pre-exp share game? I'm curious cause I keep seeing people say that they use only 3-4 mons to avoid needing to grind in the old games, but I usually use 10-15 mons throughout the course of an adventure and never end up anymore than 5 levels under the gym leaders despite never grinding. I don't necessarily keep them all evenly trained or anything, but the fact that I'm able to so freely switch around the pokemon I use while still managing to have a full team of 6 competently leveled mons by the end makes me wonder wtf these guys are doing to be struggling so hard.

I make a full team of six by the second badge and try to add a new Pokémon to the team for every new badge I get

I just use a team of 6, battle every trainer, and run from wild battles.
You'll be 'underleveled' at certain points but your Pokemon have EVs and IVs while npcs don't and that more than makes up the difference. You never, ever, need to grind in Pokemon games.

I use 6, swapping mons out when I feel like it. I don’t feel a need to grind them all to the same level, and typically my highest and lowest will be within 5 or so levels of each other. Doesn’t bother me one bit.

used to be 6 when i was a kid but i did a run of platinum last year with like 20, although some didn't last too long. it was a lot of fun and made the game more interesting, pretty rough at times too but granted i didn't play any past emerald often so that could be me not knowing the game as well.

is this the new psyop to pretend having to box your team mates was the norm because the newer games are not balanced around exp share?

More or less. It's zoomers pretending their first game wasn't XY.

They are obviously not balanced around a feature that isn't in

explain to me why pokemon out of battle still get exp without ever stepping once in the battlefield then

Same reason your party members that aren't in the active party get xp in a lot of RPG games.

Pokemon's game systems don't mesh with reserves not getting xp.

Then how come no one complained when they didn’t get exp for the first 15 years of the franchise?

The series had been around for over 15 years by the time they added the nu exp share moron.

            so they share....their experience?

              Anonymous

I thought it was obvious that the "feature" being referred to was the exp share toggle. The game isn't balanced around not having exp share because at no point in development was there an ability to disable it.

                Anonymous

Experience in Pokemon games isn't balanced at all, as different Pokemon require different amounts of experience to level up.

why would I possibly do that when no party exp share already makes it pointless to use multiple pokemon

Having a full team of six Pokemon gives you more options when later in the game you can't just power through with your starter. How is Venusaur going to take out Blaine's gym in Gen 1?

                >How is Venusaur going to take out Blaine's gym in Gen 1?
By being over leveled and spamming any normal attack.

BDSP are, unironically. If anything that alone is enough to make them the worst games in the series.

I used to obtain the strategy guides and would always level up my team across the board taking advantage of type matchups. I never realized people just use their starter and power through by overleveling.

Generally I'll get one plus my starter before the first Gym, then add one to the team every badge from there onwards. Though I'm not committed to it if I happen to have a couple of Pokemon I really want on the team early on.

I usually just use a team of 6, never less than that. I think SM was the first game I used like 12 mons. It was fun because I had more bros, but it was also kind of annoying to switch mons out. When I played SV I used a team of 30 mons. The first 30 mons I encountered I had to use. My team was mostly dog shit and I became severely under leveled by the mid game as I was not grinding at all. It was just hilarious seeing how broken the xp share was that I didnt have any problems before that.

Using multiple Pokemon is the entire point of the games. It's a monster catching and battling game. You're making it sound like playing the games are a chore that you try to get through as fast as possible.

The point of the game is to beat all 8 gyms and the elite 4+champion with a side goal of finishing the pokedex

The actual point of the game is enjoying the experience along the way, but I wouldn’t expect you to understand

I typically had an uncompetitive HM move on 3 pokes. Waterfall doesn’t count, Waterfall Gyarados is better than Aqua Tail due to accuracy and flinch chance. I don’t always run a surf capable special attacker, so sometimes Surf get hung on a shitmon HM slave.

6-7 plus probably the box legendary when I get it

    >Starter
    >Something that flies
    >Something that surfs (if not starter)
    >Some sort of Rock or Ground type
    >Some sort of Electric or Grass type
    >Free Space
    >Filler mostly for HMs but leveled a decent bit as well
    >Box Legendary

    I use 6
Always order them by levels, lowest levels first
That way they’re all around the same level
If I need to swap party members I either do switch training or find a way to cheese higher level mons with the new one

I use 6, usually spread out through the game (ex. Starter, 1 more before the first gym, 1 before the second and so on)
I don't grind and I usually end up just 2-4 levels below the gym leader's ace, gaps get bigger during the post game but levels don't matter as much by then (ex. a team of level 60s can beat Red with some planning and the right items)

  33. 3 months ago

I try to use as many of the new Pokemon as I can. A lot easier to do in the games with party wide Exp. Share of course, but I still wish the games were much longer so I could use some of them for more than a second.
