I got a surprising amount of nudes/casual hookups from this game alone. Good memories

it was honestly practically impossible to NOT get hit on by some girl in a third world latin or asian country back then. the early internet was wild

Best MMO even and clearly a fluke.

So fricking clearly, after having played the ios remakes. I don't even think releasing it as is today would be the same, the communities and wikis just destroy the magic.

The cultural and social paradigm changed, nothing can be the same again.

This, nobody would want to just hang around and casually level. It all has to be minmaxed and planned out for leveling/bossing and interactions will be limited to ERP weirdos.
Won't have things like people hanging around the map portals chatting about normal shit and raising/healing people for no compensation.

Yea, nowadays 95% of people are meta slaves, especially the MMORPG gays. People would search for the best min-max build and character progression, get bored and quit.

            >nowadays 95% of people are meta slaves
Tons of players have always done that since the late 90's when I first started playing MMORPG's. Only difference is that moronic kids play less of these games and have moved onto other genres.

Moos need a majority of the playerbase to have never played one before to be good. The drip feed now is never going to be able to replicate that, appreciate the times you were able to see.

Definite case of 'less is more'. No railroading, no hand holding, you were originally dropped off in one of the starting towns and told to go at it. They later added the tutorial section but other than that there still wasn't any set path you had to do to progress as the whole world was open to you from the start.

The alpha was a magical time.

      >no evasion penalty for having large mobs on you back then
      >people were dragging an entire cave's worth of monsters to the entrances just to murder everybody

      Fun times.

      not even a fluke
they just made a big world to explore with huge enemy variety and lots of incredibly rare drops and it worked
what makes it so good is you start the game and you can do whatever you want, wherever you want.

nearly every other MMO since has fricked this up by trying to railroad you through lvl10 quest hub, lvl 20 quest hub, lvl 30 quest hub etc

I loved how you did that questionably, the game suggest a class and then throw you as a novice near that job changer.

yeah, no idea which town you're in
ppl in chat keep talking about this "Pront" place that you have no idea what it is
all the towns separated by a few zones of really spicy enemies (for a lvl 1~10 noob to deal with anyway)
the zeny cost for a kafra warp being that little bit too much for a new player that you couldnt just warp
the map only being partially useful cuz it still had Korean all over it

good shit, i wish i could go back to those innocent days of early MMOs before minmaxxing and handholding ruined them all

      >>no guides, wikis or anything back in those days
There was at least 2 big forums full of guides and theoryshitters and I personally used 3 different databases.

      Loved the red potion market.
      >Roll into town and everyone in the area is out of stock
      >Sell at almost retail
      >Few more merchants come in and start undercutting
      >We all just keep lowering the price till I'm just selling them at the full merchant discount price
      >Someone goes even lower
      >Just buy up all their stock for more profits
I think the best thing about them is they were basically negligible when it came to making money. It was all just fun.
There were multiple times I would just fill my entire cart and sell them all for 1z.

The merchant class was incredibly soulful idea. A shame they kinda dropped the ball later with second jobs.

what do you mean? making items as a blacksmith was so fulfilling. especially when you devoted so much time and ended up in the top 10.

Crafted weapons weren't very good and usually outclassed by endow. Alchemist went from "barely useless" to "most OP piece of shit in a video game".

There used to be a little island on the map west of Prontera I spent so long on my Acolyte trying to randomly teleport to it. It wasn't until private servers became a thing that I learned the island on the mini-map didn't actually exist in game.

My best memories of this game are never about actually playing it.
I used to spend a lot of time just sitting in front of the clock tower in Aldebaran with my friends. Occasionally selling teleports with my priest. I think my set was Prontera, Geffen, Morroc, and Glast Heim. Whatever the going price was for a specific destination or a blue gem, or equivalent price, and I'd pick a random destination.
There never seemed to be that many priests in Aldebaran so I got a lot of takers on the random warp.

This game is simultaneously the best and the worst that has happened to my life. Even today I cannot drop it completely.
