They literally are. One of the big misfires of design from Valve in that era before they went to shit.
    Coinflip-at-the-moment gameplay is shit gameplay.

      >the highest natural critical hit chance attainable is 12%.
And to get to 12% you have to have done damage that means not be garbage.
Melee weapons are higher but whatever don't care don't let people get in your face.
It's a fricking casual game crits are fine.

    I find them fun.

And no matter how hard comp gays cry, it won't change my opinion. Suck a dick.

      >I don't care if random crits are not fair.
      AAAgay game designer here
They are fair in the sense it's a class driven game with clear UX telegraphing a soldier's presence, whether at close or long range.

It's an attrition game where players must expect the near-unexpected, but not the completely unexpected. This is well conveyed through visual and systemic tells. No game mechanics are obfuscated.

It is done quite well, though the frequency of which is random and thus difficult for many players of various skill ceilings to find enjoyable.

That inherently makes the design decision questionable where twitch decisionmaking is required, but altogether dismissive for players willing to weigh their engagement options.

I don't know why I chose this image. I'm 5 drinks deep contemplating how to keep my job in this economy.

They are fair. You get a bigger chance to crit by doing damage. The better you are the more you crit.
It's perfectly fair and lets good players dunk on everyone.

if we got a TF3 that removed random crits nobody would be begging for them to return and there would be no "debate" with its obligatory contrarians.

See Brawl and its tripping mechanic.

they're there to break stalemates and let newbie players kill pro players. the game was originally designed to let everyone participate, no matter the skill, and compgays want to take that away from pubs (that they don't even touch) because "muh skill" as if they don't already play an extremely watered down version of the game with all the randomness and fun removed.

The biggest issue with random crits is that the crit chance increases based on how much damage you've done in the past few minutes, meaning GOOD players benefit from random crits far more than newbies do, skewing it in favor of pubstompers.

explosive classes also get way more value out of a random crit due to frontloading the damage compared to everyone else

        1. Only a problem depending on the server and what type of players you're playing with (though it usually is a bad thing)
        2. Could've been much more elegantly balanced around score instead of damage
        3. I'm always in-favor of these sorts of ideas for casual games but everything about tf2's implementation is dated and no longer even works as intended with a decade of balance changes, gMeplay philosophy changes etc.
discussing tf2 balance is so fricking moronic because the features were made for a game that hasn't existed since dozens of major updates ago.

Yeah but newbies don't exist anymore, they don't fricking play this game, they play nuCod or Fortnite.

      >break stalemates
Stalemates don’t happen anymore as map design has gotten less choke point heavy and there are so many different ways to break it through just swapping to certain classes/weapons
      >let newbies get kills
This is completely false since random crits are purposely designed to give players who are already doing well (pro players) a higher chance to get crits.
Dane is a troony loving pedo, but he makes valid points about random crits being moronic and Ganker has yet to refute any of them

        >This is completely false
        You've failed statistics.
It rewards good players with better probability and still gives lesser players a 2% chance to fire off one at worst. The probability isn't great in a vacuum but most classes will accidentally get damage in one way or another so even if the newbie is total shit they can still fire off a lucky shot over the course of multiple encounters and shots fired. The random crits function best when the larger scales are considered.
The mechanic still favors the skilled/aggressive while giving an olive branch to even shitty players, unless either of those players are using something that doesn't allow for random crits. Which means the best balancing decision is to allow all weapons to have random crits to fall in line with the rest of the arsenal. This should include sniper rifles of course, as this makes no difference since hitreg is a mess and evens human vs. bot encounters.

If he wants to remove random crits he can just play on a server that has them disabled, no?

the most fun I've had in TF2, hands down and it's not even close, is with 100% crits (and low gravity Purple/Orange maps only). the game was always too slow considering the amount of ways you could be one shot by some characters and never die with others. 100% crits fixes so much and makes scout the most fun a man can have with a shotgun

Playing on Dane servers with them disabled was fine, you forget they're even a thing because they don't add anything to the gameplay.
I assume the only people who like random critz are soldier mains who always play with a medic bf (gay) and their medic bf because they like critting spies with their ubersaw.
Okay critting spies is funny maybe let's remove all critz except on spy frick spy

The only “unfair” thing about them is that they’re given to players who are doing well instead of players who are dying frequently, which enforces steamrolls instead of preventing them. Random crits should be a crutch to help bad players take down good ones.
