however, i suspect that cards will continue to get better at it over the next several years, so maybe in like 3-4 years the midrange cards will be capable of it without sacrificing playable performance, so at that point i'd consider it.

Some locations have baked lights only late at night or even lack them, relying solely on the paremeters of the main outdoor light (which is why you often see a blue glow on objects or Geralt). Contrary to what some foxes say, this has always existed since the original dayone and has nothing to do with AO.
>Have RTX 4090 >Turn on raytracing >Go from 295 fps to 53 >Close game
Even at 1080p on the fastest GPUs RT isn't viable. I'd much rather play any fps at 240fps than at sub-60 with marginally better looking shadows.
Black person you said Ray Tracing scales better. So show me an example.
What he means is that with RT it doesn't matter if you only have 1 light or 1000, the performance impact is going to be about the same.
With rasterization every additional light is going to affect performance. But you're still going to need about 50 lights to have the performance impact that turning on RT has.
once again, I hope you are joking because no one could be this stupid
the blue is not a filter
the blue is a global shadow, tweaked so that it's not 100% black and have a tinge of blue because of the blue sky. Similar to painting shadows in Photoshop at 50% opacity and flow, because having 100% black shadow is idiotic.
Now RT (please stop using RTX and RT as one another) does NOT remove this blue. If you go outdoor in Witcher 3 you will still have this blue, because there's no roof over your head to block this blue ambient light.
>buy this nice ray tracing video card, you guys >that'll be $1400 plus tax >enjoy your 27 frames per second >no refunds
I wouldn't spend so much as a nickel until those greedy asians lower the prices back to $450 to $500 for a flagship video card. Until then, the asians can drop dead.
EVs suck. They are impractical everywhere but fricking California. >temp dips below freezing
Whoops your range got decreased by 70% and also using the car in these conditions severely damages the battery chemistry. >muh fast charging
We've reached the limits of fast charging. Currently we have to pump coolant through the power plug at fast chargers in order to keep the battery from overheating and we've reached the maximum amount the coolant can cool. More and the thermal threshold is exceeded and the battery begins to degrade. Lithium ion will always be limited to the 20-30 minutes to 70%. >just charge at work, at home, etc
This only works in suburban or low building density areas. Try it in a place like NYC with curbside parking. Install a charger at every curb spot? Imagine the colossal cost of installing and maintaining millions upon millions of fast charging stations. Imagine the havoc it will bring on to the power system. >muh car batteries as power grid load balancers
Car manufacturers can barely agree on standards, let alone implementing a globally standard system of distributed vehicle car battery load balancing. Also what happens in extreme cases? Like a sudden blizzard like what happened recently. Everyone turns on their AC and cripples the power system, the load balancing kicks in and drains people's car batteries overnight. Now if there's an emergency you cant do shit.
EVs are corporate tricks to take away your independence. Do you think all automotive companies suddenly began caring about global warming over profit margins? Lol
Because they still have a ton of downsides, maybe even more
Still get fricked by freezing temps, they produce water that expands in cells damaging them
Made from even rarer minerals
Still less energy dense than gasoline
Difficult as frick to store, has to be pressurized to be worth it - tanks have to be thick and durable, seeps through everything - even thicker and coated tanks
Still sourced by using regular grid energy to separate it out from water, not an energy source but storage
Sourcing water to turn into pure hydrogen may become difficult in the future
Still dangerous when damaged, trading a self-fueling fire for a pressurized tank explosion
I never understood why we went all in on Electrical Cars, when Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars aren't that far off and have almost none of the downsides
i have a better and more sustainable idea then any kind of car. its called safe alternatives to live without having to drive.

No one said this moron. Ray tracing is a rendering technique from the 60s and is only now possible in real time. It's the inevitable future. You would know this if you weren't a low iq Gankerturd ignorant of basic technology.
It's not better for the sole fact that pre-baked will always be more performant. The problem is that pre-baked takes time, effort, and skill, which modern developers have none of. So they dump the workload onto you, forcing you to buy a $2,000 meme card.

Nope. Ray tracing scales better with more light sources and light maps take up space. There's really no point in doing it when you have ray tracing. Those resources can be used elsewhere.

did they lighten SSAO in 1.4 in order to reduce the white artifacts? It's very noticeable in the middle pic but much less so in the 3rd
>nvidia pays dev to completely remove all lighting >turn on ray tracing and lighting is now back but you get 20fps >you need to buy a 2000$ videocard to play a game from 2009
Reminder that, given the hardware available now, the only real use for Ray tracing is lighting that is achievable if given the resources. There are plenty of Skyrim mods that give very close approximations b/c each area is tuned for by autistic OCD people with unlimited time and no budget constraints.
Ray tracing IS the future but it's still not ready to be a complete paradigm shift. Look back to the first video cards with shaders, yes that was the future but they did not last long at ALL. The technology is going to improve so dramatically that none of the current lineup is going to mean jack shit for truly impressive Ray traced titles.
tl;dr, it WILL matter, but it doesn't yet.
It is a meme, you can achieve the same lighting setup without raytracing, and at a very low performance cost too.
The "before" picture just looks bland because the devs didn't put a whole lot of effort into doing the lighting for that interior scene so everything looks super flat.
Also those windows look weird as all frick. What the frick is going on there?
FRICK YEAH ANON I sure do love playing games I’ve already played because the devs got a chunk of Nvidia money because Nvidia has been pushing this RTX shit for five, six, or seven years at this point and it TOTALLY works fine this time and doesn’t kill framerate bro
I have no idea why their idea of realistic lighting is orange as frick light barely illuminating rooms. Shit does not look like that. Same with other light sources, they illuminate like 2m of the room with the rest being dark as frick.
According to nvidia the most ULTRA REALISTIC lighting means that everything looks like its on fire outside a building and that every dirty mud puddle is 100% reflective.
Very realistic, I will totally pay 2000$ to play these games at 30fps.
RTX gives that extra level of immersion as it grounds objects into the scene with the lighting, they look like its a thing thats in the world and being lit by the world around it. Its just you're thinking about things looking off less with your brain.
Problem is not the fps, but the glitches and performance. The lighting isn't implemented perfectly in w3, you have visual bugs, shadows switch position depending on your distance to it, spiderwebs switch between gray and purple hue if you move camera, flickering clouds in the distance, that sort of shit.
That lighting can be done with pre-baked lighting that costs half the performance and looks better.
RTX is a scam where lazy developers offload the development time to consumers by forcing them to render light in real time.
And the difference is negligible.
If I flashed a series of scenes across your monitor, some with bounce lighting and some without, I bet you couldn't guess better than a 50/50 coin-flip.
You are not just enabling and disabling ray tracing. I played W3 last year and it did not look that bad. I played at the maximum possible settings on everything.
have a nice day you disingenuous wiener sucker
-ME. Could've been done without it easily, you dumb frick. Ray Tracing will not be used for better visuals, it will be used to shorten devtime, even if it means your brand new RTX4090 can barely run new games @60fps, stop defending this shit.
Stop making your shitty thread, you stupid fricking shill. No one's buying your overpriced GPU for meme tech. Gaming is perfectly fine without raytracing.
Cope seethe mald RTX gay. If I had to choose between chromatic aberration (which can be turned off in the ini files if you weren't tech illiterate) or upscaled 240p resolution with 35 FPS then I'm choosing the option I can mitigate or eliminate.
did you guys notice how Geralt always seem to be lit up even in completely dark cave? It's because the game has this artificial player light, there's a mod that disables this, try it. It improved the non-RT vanilla game for me
Now that I've seen it in RE2, Fortnite, and Callisto I want RayTracing in every game. Once the Pandora's box has been opened it's pretty hard to close it.
Wait a minit, did they really downgrade the non RT version of witcher 3? Those indoor on/off comparisons look way worse than I remember it before rtx was a thing.
I hope you are serious?
Non-RT scene is entirely lit up by the blue ambient light, which should NOT be happening because Geralt is indoor
RT completely fixes this long-standing issue in MANY games, indoors area are properly blocked from the ambient blue sky, and since the houses on the opposite side are in direct sunlight, they become light sources and thus, shining the room through the windows.
what with ps5s & XBones being essentially PCs without an API overhead, is it technically easy and cheaper than ever to produce console games ? I remember reading about how programming for the ps4 was a nightmare...

FRICK YEAH ANON I sure do love playing games I’ve already played because the devs got a chunk of Nvidia money because Nvidia has been pushing this RTX shit for five, six, or seven years at this point and it TOTALLY works fine this time and doesn’t kill framerate bro
>Add piss filter
>Zoomers mouths agape
heh, drink time for lil zoom I guess.
Graphics ≠ Good game
That can be easily baked in with lightmaps if the devs aren't lazy.
>bake in light maps for an open world game with day and night system
Like every open world pre-RTX? Yes, that's correct.
Oh you're talking about those light maps. The Witcher 3 has those and they obviously don't look as good as the comparison shows.
I feel like this thread is just a cope thread for op for spending thousand bucks just to replay a 7 year old game
that's pc gayming in a nutshell
I have no idea why their idea of realistic lighting is orange as frick light barely illuminating rooms. Shit does not look like that. Same with other light sources, they illuminate like 2m of the room with the rest being dark as frick.
okay but what if trains that didn't need tracks
Poorgays will cope saying ''IT'S TOO DARK I CAN'T SEE ANYTHIN1!11!''
You can polish this trash all you want I will never play it
out of my way you soft wiener b***hes, its time for BLAST PROCESSING
Temerian or nilfgaard Gwent deck?
According to nvidia the most ULTRA REALISTIC lighting means that everything looks like its on fire outside a building and that every dirty mud puddle is 100% reflective.
Very realistic, I will totally pay 2000$ to play these games at 30fps.
>Ganker thinks ray tracing implementation is toggling a bool and completely uniform across every game
RTX gives that extra level of immersion as it grounds objects into the scene with the lighting, they look like its a thing thats in the world and being lit by the world around it. Its just you're thinking about things looking off less with your brain.
Problem is not the fps, but the glitches and performance. The lighting isn't implemented perfectly in w3, you have visual bugs, shadows switch position depending on your distance to it, spiderwebs switch between gray and purple hue if you move camera, flickering clouds in the distance, that sort of shit.
>still image for ray tracing
How fitting.
still images are easier to make comparison in an already good-looking game
woosh
That lighting can be done with pre-baked lighting that costs half the performance and looks better.
RTX is a scam where lazy developers offload the development time to consumers by forcing them to render light in real time.
You cant prebake a character being bounce light illuminated by his environment realistically and dynamically.
And the difference is negligible.
If I flashed a series of scenes across your monitor, some with bounce lighting and some without, I bet you couldn't guess better than a 50/50 coin-flip.
Hand crafting prebaked lighting on an open world is just not feasible.
>makes brown game even more brown
ray tracing is a meme
Shadows: Low
Shadows: High
You are not just enabling and disabling ray tracing. I played W3 last year and it did not look that bad. I played at the maximum possible settings on everything.
have a nice day you disingenuous wiener sucker
Doom 3.
Fortnite RTX reflections.
Wouldnt just rendering the world again through the mirror take less processing power than rtx?
Yeah that's my point, it is less performance intensive and looks just as good. This same thought process can be used for other RTX features as well.
No it wouldn't lmao
Explain your point without using ebonics (lmao, lol, cap, frfr).
Fortnite map is too big to render twice. Ray tracing is probably more performant in this case. Kinda obvious.
It doesn't render the entire map in the mirror you monkey, it only renders what is viewable as that is what it pulls the info from.
And that's still too big to render twice.
I dont know about that one chief I mean games were doing it for like 15 years before RTX became a thing.
Really? Show me games with large maps like fortnite doing it
Your a big boy I dont have to spoon feed you comparisons when i already did once.
That's what I thought
Wow I can see see a highly polygon reflection in a random window that I would never notice during normal gameplay. Take all my money!
Too bad the game is still boring
That... that's not what a room with open windows looks like. Ever.
I guess ray-tracing really is a meme.
>open windows
>room turns completely orange and mostly dark
>the windows turn into glowing embers
>that'll be $1400 (plus tip)
Gee, thanks ray-tracing...
-ME. Could've been done without it easily, you dumb frick. Ray Tracing will not be used for better visuals, it will be used to shorten devtime, even if it means your brand new RTX4090 can barely run new games @60fps, stop defending this shit.
This is interesting, non-RT has this strange light bleed that RT fixed.
Have you beaten any games you buy or do you stand in one spot at the beginning of the game and makes 5 gifs and call it a day?
That's Drahim Castle near Novigrad, which is arguable almost half the game
So you havent beaten the game like my original question entailed?
it's my 4th playthrough
Stop making your shitty thread, you stupid fricking shill. No one's buying your overpriced GPU for meme tech. Gaming is perfectly fine without raytracing.
>t. seething poorgay
Now I can't see shit! Cool!
>its darker so its more realistic!!!!
you need laser eye surgery
This kills the RTX gay.
those neon letters shouldn't be reflected lol
lol lmao imagine being Mirror's Edge gays
You do not understand how depth or perception works do you?
do you?
Even the original Mirror's edge mogs raytrace gays
This buries the dead body of previously killed RTX gays.
RT or not it's just a really terrible image
glares out of the ass, fricking FILM GRAINS and chromatic aberrations
you should be flayed alive
Cope seethe mald RTX gay. If I had to choose between chromatic aberration (which can be turned off in the ini files if you weren't tech illiterate) or upscaled 240p resolution with 35 FPS then I'm choosing the option I can mitigate or eliminate.
did you guys notice how Geralt always seem to be lit up even in completely dark cave? It's because the game has this artificial player light, there's a mod that disables this, try it. It improved the non-RT vanilla game for me
Most horror games have that, though. It's not new.
cant you just download from graphical mod?
saves money and fps
literally soul/soulless
yeah I guess the 1st picture looks kinda like Dark Souls
>Everything is too dark
Yeah, it is, there's a reason lighting was implemented that way all this years.
Now that I've seen it in RE2, Fortnite, and Callisto I want RayTracing in every game. Once the Pandora's box has been opened it's pretty hard to close it.
>Admitting to playing fortnite
Go back.
Wait a minit, did they really downgrade the non RT version of witcher 3? Those indoor on/off comparisons look way worse than I remember it before rtx was a thing.
the sun doesn't look like that.
>never been to mexico
>going to mexico
No cap ray tracing looks like a shitty skyrim ENB mod from 2012, i dont understand what people see in that
I hope you are serious?
Non-RT scene is entirely lit up by the blue ambient light, which should NOT be happening because Geralt is indoor
RT completely fixes this long-standing issue in MANY games, indoors area are properly blocked from the ambient blue sky, and since the houses on the opposite side are in direct sunlight, they become light sources and thus, shining the room through the windows.
So what your saying is devs need to stop adding blue and orange filters in video games and RTX removes it for you. Bravo Nvidia here's 3000$.
both look Ultima 9 -tier
hmm yes, make everything darker
your kind spreads disease, defeatism and desertion
p.s. you'll choke to death on 3 pounds of steel
Ray Tracing is cool and definitely the future, but for the time being I'd rather have high framerates (144+) than RT.
what with ps5s & XBones being essentially PCs without an API overhead, is it technically easy and cheaper than ever to produce console games ? I remember reading about how programming for the ps4 was a nightmare...
xbox is just dx12 like windows and PS5 uses vulkan/their own api.
Raytracing isn't worth it on consoles yet they're finally at the point where they can run games 60fps but not if you turn that shit on
>doesn't want to make a brown ugly game even browner and uglier
>P-P-POORgay COPE!!1
>theres people who buy a gpu that can do rtx
>they play rtx games because they look nice
>theres people that do not buy a gpu that can do rtx
>they dont play rtx games, also rtx games sux in their opinion
riveting discussion innit
Anon everyone here played the game and knows the first ss has every light effect deactivated
