Because pretty much all shmups worth a crap were made by japanese devs and in Japan they probably have more composers and arrangers per capita that any country in the world, its not hard for them to hire talented people.
From the same company (and composer), Vajra for LaserActive. Sadly since is an LD game without an official OST release, the music rips have sound effects baked as it's part of the video footage.

His website cites some works he did for db-Soft and Datawest (including https://youtu.be/loUG1rKTKtE?t=52), but he is mostly retired from vidya.

Alright, I'm listening to this now and it's excellent. I'd only heard the Rayxanber I and II soundtracks before, but there are some excellent songs on this.
Keep this thread alive. I've gotta travel for work this weekend, but when I get back, I'm going to do a cover of Rayxanber Stage 1. I've been thinking about it for months, and it's finally time.
I still hip thrust to the title screen music every time I boot this game on my PC Engine Duo. Too bad the sound effects are obnoxious as frick, they ruin the mood of the soundtrack.
I feel like this is a common problem in PCE-CD games, game sound effects are often way too loud. I know you have real hardware anyway, but one good thing about emulating PCE-CD (at least on mednafen) is that you can actually lower the volume from the sfx and just enjoy the soundtrack, makes some games more enjoyable imo.
Dilate, emupoor!!!!!!!!1!
Yeah all emulators have sound mixing controls precisely because of that. But I wish someone actually hacked this game to kill the yellow laser at least.
I bet they knew their sfx sucked ass since the last stage bizarrely has only redbook audio and nothing else.
>I bet they knew their sfx sucked ass since the last stage bizarrely has only redbook audio and nothing else.
I'm fairly sure they made the final stage with only music and muted sfx as some sort of homage to some anime of that era having muted sound effects in their final scenes for impact.
HOLY SHEEET when devs really want to try hard on PCE it looks great. This and Wind of Xanadu 2 really take the cake and can take it right to the SNES and early PSX.
i wish most posts on this board were the quality of this one
GBA/Gamecube poster ruined everything.
Who
No wait I don't wanna know
Rayxanber 1 also has an extremely good soundtrack.
I listen to this while I'm working out. I was just about to go to bed, but I listened to it and got too hyped.
I've played maybe 30 minutes of shmups in my entire life, but I listen to so much shmup music. It's just so good.
Best of all is that the original composer still talks about the games even today. Must've been a good memory.
How come the shmups get to keep all the musicians to themselves? Would kill to have a 2D platformer with an OST like this.
Because pretty much all shmups worth a crap were made by japanese devs and in Japan they probably have more composers and arrangers per capita that any country in the world, its not hard for them to hire talented people.
This is really good actually.
It's a tradition at this point.
You can feel the 80s anime heritage in it.

I really like this series, despite the frustratingly high difficulty.
The soundtrack not so much. It sounds great, but it's too smooth for me.
Nice, I didn't know this game. It could have been amazing it is wasn't just one big robot chase per level.
For me it's W-Ring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvJr_5zoUPY
They got the perfect difficulty balance by the third installment for sure.
Did they? I admit I decided to stop when I managed to beat the second one.
The first two games are tough as shit. The third one is a lot more balanced. Give it a shot.
I wonder how much it costs nowadays. Probably an obscene amount*.
Can I easily burn pce-cd games to play?
*over 20$ for an used is an obscene amount to me
>Can I easily burn pce-cd games to play?
If i remember well the PCE-CD has no copy protection.
Hahaha, allright here were go! Thanks, anons.
(feels good to have the pce-cd fullset)
Enjoy the shmup machine, anon.
I've been enjoying it since 2001, anon.
For some reason I bought a pc-engine GT at my local import store. And a duo-r a couple of years later 😉
Good lad
I burned them all, easy as shit
Did he do anything besides Rayxanber and Vajra? I can't find anything.

Pretty sure he did Psychic Detective
For me it's Riot Zone

Nice body horror.
Thanks OP!
To be honest I still have to hear a bad pc-e cd ost.
>To be honest I still have to hear a bad pc-e cd ost.
Super Darius II and R-Type CD. Both are a complete mockery of the original soundtracks.
>Darius II
It still sounds fine on the arcade
maybe I will play this game
Definitely worth it
Kyuuyaku Kansou is such a good fricking song. There's even a remix of it on youtube.
God damn.
Someone made a mashup of it recently too. The guitar solos put together are god-tier.
And a Genesis remix to boot.
This is some of the best shmup music I've seen, hot damn.
Based, main reason why i still remember the game
There's tons of games from that era with amazing music that people don't even remember, it's crazy.
wow FM Towns actually has exclusives? Guess I'll have to try emulating it for once.
only the first one
FMTowns has very few exclusive shmups
I noticed this. Siter Skain's doujin shmup Alltynex is by far the best exclusive game for it I've seen.
Wish it hadn't been that way. The hardware could do much more than they advertised, but SEGA had to bullshit them to death.
Rayxanber 3 is for PCECD
Quite a few, despite how alien it is
Keep this thread alive. I've gotta travel for work this weekend, but when I get back, I'm going to do a cover of Rayxanber Stage 1. I've been thinking about it for months, and it's finally time.
Please cover Shake Off (stage 4).
Alright, I'm back. I'm doing it this weekend. Hold me accountable.
Git working
What are you using to cover it in the first place?
Probably synths
Time's up.
where is it
I still hip thrust to the title screen music every time I boot this game on my PC Engine Duo. Too bad the sound effects are obnoxious as frick, they ruin the mood of the soundtrack.
The yellow laser sound is the culprit really

>emupoor
man with those PCE prices these days I don't even care no more
Tell me about it, these homosexual scalpers have used ones going for +$500. Insane.
>+$500
That average these days though.
Theme of data west is nice.
Funny name innit.
Pulstar is a great shmup and has an amazing ost
Thank you for remembering Pulstar.
I remember this from the weather music thread some months ago
Good stuff
GET FUNKY
Shmups are a genre where the music definitely outshines the gameplay loop
For you
True for most games
>good music means bad gameplay
i guess megaman sucks too
its kind of overrated for sure
What else? Sonic?
Nah, Sonic is rightly rated
oh frick off
>RHWAYZANBOH
...WOOOOOO!!!! *drum hits*
>Special ed voice
I'd just like to point out that this is a nice thread and I hope you gays are doing great.
I have no hope for this duo-r.
Did you break it
Haha no, I bought it long ago and found this abomination when I opened it because the video was extremely fricked up.
>Hudson chip
I miss them so much bros
Drakon if he not hot glue
That looks nasty, did some one mod that shit in there?
Yes. No idea why.
Typical CRT thread sodomites and their "mods".
>only 4 capacitors
lol
I have no idea what the previous owner tried to accomplish. Some kind of botched RGB mod?
Tick tock tick tock, anon.
I think RGB would need a different chip + port altogether
Agreed.
HOLY SHEEET when devs really want to try hard on PCE it looks great. This and Wind of Xanadu 2 really take the cake and can take it right to the SNES and early PSX.
It was on par with the Genesis at times.
>PCE low point
Master system
>PCE high point
PSX
Weird fricking system
Hudson worked magic back in the day for sure
It should've lived longer man
