For me, the soul of the x68k resides in its doujin titles, mostly shmups ft. puzzle and fighting games, with the former showing off what the system was musically and graphically capable of. Picrel, Mahou Shooter Pucchin Purin, is my favorite so far.

Unfortunately, none of these would realistically make it there, only Cho Ren Sha has a chance. Oh well, at least they could also toss Chobi Ren Sha in as an easter egg.

Like all of these Japanese-only pre-Windows PCs it's pretty cool but not worth trying to nip up the real hardware anymore. Shit's mega expensive in today's reseller market, and the majority of the OEM components in them are guaranteed to need replacement or maintenance.
Emulators and MISTER have already hit cycle accuracy and the entire library's been dumped for the x68000 (you can even run the original OS and pretend you're using it for non-game shit), so you should check that out first before trying to commit.

The game you chose there is worth setting up an emulator; it's fantastic. I'm sure you already know, but it also got a PlayStation port. It's supposedly vastly inferior to the X68000 original according to at least one anon on here, but I frankly can't tell much of a difference and appreciate the arranged mode it includes.
I've mostly played arcade ports which all play very well and have great graphics and music. It must be a truly impressive machine in person.

Going by this explaining the differences with the PS1, DS and mobile versions and not mentioning the X86000 I can only assume it is identical to the famicom version. Wonderswan JRPG ports run at 75 hz and you can get through them faster so maybe the X86000 version runs a little slower than the famicom.

The thing ran at 55hz so if you don't know what that means and you're trying to emulate it, you're going to have games running at the wrong speed/jerky scrolling etc.

If you want real hardware it's horribly expensive. Via emulation I've found that I enjoy FM Towns ports more.

Of all the big name Japanese meme computers (PC-98, MSX, X68000) X68000 is probably the one least worth getting. Extremely high price (I could buy multiple 98s and MSXs for the price of one), and while it has a lot of great games, most of them are arcade games you can already play a million different ways now. Granted, they are amazing ports, but are they worth spending at minimum 1500 (closer to and above 2k if you buy on ebay)? If you want to get into older Japanese computers, I'd suggest the MSX primarily for being the cheapest (~200-300$), with a great library, plenty of games you don't need to know Japanese for, and being the easiest to get up and running (comparatively). If you can speak JP and are willing to deal with something more complex than I'd suggest an early PC9821, but that'd require its own discussion.

I refuse to believe that dude is actually selling for 300. Go on eBay and Yahoo auctions and look at real prices for these things. Once you figure in a keyboard, mouse, and a compatible monitor/upscaler 1500 is a bargain.

Anyone out there trying to run X68000 stuff on Retroarch: for the past few years, this core (PK68) has been broken and will not work. If you download a nightly build, however, it works fine. If you're launching your games and you get a blank screen and then nothing, this is the bug fixed by using a nightly build of PK68.

If you're talking about the LCD in the picture it most certainly doesn't have better contrast than anything.

How could you tell? You're looking at a photo of it through your IPS monitor.

Compared to the NEC machines, It's a little easier to get into if you're an EOP and has pretty good arcade ports for it's time. It's also built for smooth scrolling from the get-go which is also a big plus for action games.
It also has a few good originals like pic related

Any way to switch sound processor for the retroarch core? Too lazy to set up the standalone emulator and ht looks like the xf keys are not supported In RA

All i want is a translation of the X68000 Port of Mechwarrior 1, it is the best port of all 3 and endorsed by tatsunoko and studio nue.
