Games can't be art for that very reason, they are just trivial toys meant to keep you occupied for a couple hours, like a board game or playing cards. Gamers don't want poignant stories about the human experience or social problems. They just want to be bombarded with bing bing wahoos for several hours instead of having to think about the state of the world or human experiences. This post was made by Ganker gang

      1. The games that try to do what you said and advertise themselves on that fact tend to have a lot of their themes, characters, and plot-beats copied from films and literature, and at worst they play out like high-budget fanfiction.
      2. The games that actually might qualify for your description of art tend to be overlooked and barely given the time of day by critics.

It's weird that this image implies that a story adds literally nothing to a game. 999's story has the interactivity aspect woven into it, and it obviously amplifies the experience of the game if you aren't a mega fan of escape games.

  13. 2 years ago

I can think of great games in different categories. If you have bad gameplay, then the story and other things must balance that out, and vice-versa. It also depends on what you want for the game. Yoshi's Island has little story but the gameplay makes up for it. Silent Hill 3 has imo bad/just okay combat required for the game, but the story and other things make up for it.

It sounds like a meme, but it's true. Being smart if useless if you can't decode the idea from your mind into something someone else can understand.

I'm guessing their mind goes so fast, that the moment they say something, they have to comment on what they just said, and so on until it's just a garble of words.

  23. 2 years ago

Unironically true. The worst kind of game design are cutscenes. What's the point of having the player slog from manually walking from point A to point B (which is often only 20 feet away) to get to the next cutscene? Cutscenes should be used sparingly, as a short break from interactivity.

This same argument can be used for claiming that movies shouldn't have dialogue, that's what a book is for

      Anonymous

Well, dialogue shouldn't be the point of a movie. It should be choreography, and dialogue should only be an assistance to the movie, aka MOVING PICTURE. That's the whole point of the medium.

Imagine a movie where you just watch two people talking back and forth, and there's no scenery to look upon, no moments where we change the environment, not even a screen transition. You basically make the equivalent of a greeting card but it's covered in words.

You can interactively tell a story

Doesn't the film take place across a few rooms, at least? Doesn't the film give you a view into the mindset of the jurors through their facial expressions, mannerisms, and other visual cues? The movie just wouldn't work the same if there was nothing to look at, and the dialogue can't carry it alone. This isn't a book. Like when they bring out a knife as evidence to examine, you could just put the knife on the table and have it be that. But stabbing it into the table gives you reason to feel that the jurors are already pissed that they have to deal with a stalemate. You have camerawork showcasing the one juror sweating, because he's got a long road to travel if he wants to convince his fellow men. That's the kinda thing a movie excels at. You can't just have words saying "oh I'm sweaty because I'm nervous" or "grrr I'm angry that I have to sit here, so imma stab the table". You're using the medium to expedite these things to the viewer.

The same thing applies to a video game. You're boring me to death with a cutscene, possibly of two characters fighting. However, wouldn't it be more fun to have me partake in the fight? Would that be too much to ask? I don't want to watch a character fight, I want to fight them myself.

I don’t think a great game could have NO story, but it’s true that story should not be important to a game to make it good. To immerse yourself it mostly requires engaging gameplay, but sometimes the reason you do certain things within the game is because of a character you possess or because the story portrays your enemies one way.
In kingdom hearts 3 the heartless are simply there and after several games it no longer feels important to kill them for any reason other than drops and XP, but I’ll do it because there isn’t much else to do as I progress. In bloodborne I WANT to murder these afflicted creatures as you can feel their hatred of your mere existence, and because of the knowledge you’ve gained about why they’ve come to be, sometimes you do it out of pity for them. Games with no story can be great in a vacuum, such as Opus Magnum, there’s no reason to do anything other than the sake of playing the game, and that’s fine, the gameplay is sound and succinct, warranting your time without a story.

I liked BoF's III story and its themes (story of ragtag bunch of mischievous orphans and a lovable thief wanting to make a name for themselves that gets heavily subverted. the world is under the rule of the incompetent and self-serving egotists who misuse their blessings, the horrifying revelation when the main energy source is onions green, etc.).
It added a lot to the game.

      >princess has to suffer immensely to fire a superweapon

so you just go off an infamous scene, which is a small piece of one game (not telling you which one is it, hint: it's not 4 either), you haven't even played the game just witnessed an out of context fraction off it. And then you have the audacity to judge the whole game based off pure hearsay?

Did you honestly think someone who has actually played the game back you up, let alone be able to tell right away you haven't played it? Please help me understand your line of thinking, it's so far out there I can't understand.

For a game people praise as having amazing writing, such a scene like that irks me. If it's bad enough, then yes I will tank the whole game because of it. It's like how I hate the entirety of Xenoblade Chronicles because I hate how much of a pussy Shulk becomes, to the point where he literally refuses to stop a murderous psychopathic butthole because "IF WE KILL HIM, WE'LL BE JUST LIKE HIM".

Like piss off Shulk. I saw Metal Face slaughter like 5 colonies, and kill Melia's father. You're a piece of crap if you expect me to sit back and not drive a stake through this guy's heart. Even if the rest of the game got better, I'd still discard it because of that scene.

The funny thing is, PUBG made all those sneaking scene from Metal Gear and COD into real actual situations.

There were times where I would hide in grass or behind a box and people walked right past me. Truly an amazing feeling.

PUBG 2017 was the peak of gaming and it also ended in 2017 because of the insane amount of hacking from china and wokism telling people they're racist for pointing it out.

The brightest stars burn out the fastest. What a truly amazing moment PUBG was right before it was flooded with hackers.

These formats are and always will be exclusively used by midwits.

The medium's strength is interactivity though and for everything else I could just go to another one, so I agree. Video games are kind of a super medium where it could be anything you want if you stretch the definition far enough. If someone made a legitimate movie and stuck on a menu and settings, would it be a video game? I personally don't think so, but after enough minor interactivity added, it would cross the line and become one. In fact, I know for a fact some JRPGs I've played are just a movie with turn-based battles tacked on at places instead of action scenes. At that point, it's a movie with a few more features. If that movie is then good, what is preventing it from being considered a good "game"? Should it still be judged entirely on interactivity and therefore be "bad", or should it be judged as a movie? A combination of both? I think the OP's approach would be limiting. If everyone judged video games entirely on interactivity, it would objectively limit creativity. I think the recent push away from it is mostly negative, but eradicating games with less focus on interactivity entirely would be too. Variety is the spice of life and only betters video games. If you want gameplay, there's at least 2 decades of games that are exclusively that, and they still hold up. Now is the time to experiment and add a bit of everything and see what happens. Limiting yourself to one idea of what's "right" is moronic.

I enjoy some story games with shit gameplay.

Nier Replicant is a good example. Atrocious side-quests, mediocre combat, overall just a pretty slow and boring game which you have to replay 3 times to finish

But I'd be lying if I said I don't think it's an amazing experience. The music, characters, story and twists are some of my favorite in any videogame ever. The whole presentation really makes up for the dated boring gameplay. I probably will never replay it, but I still had a great time with it

Story in games should be told organically in small pieces like in dark souls or the elder scrolls and not through massive lore dumps like in metal gear or New Vegas.

Where do rpgs lie on this? Is the narrative in them a part of the gameplay? How else are you supposed to role play?

      Anonymous

There's no role-playing in RPGs though. Your routes are pre-determined and all choices lead to 1 or 2 endings set in stone by developers. Trying to sequence break to avert this results in catastrophic errors.

        Anonymous

Generally, in game rpgs, you do have ways of choosing how you manuever through those routes, such as agency in the narrative, character progression, and literally how you explore the world, which all facillitates some amount of roleplaying.
This is true in even a lot of bioshit games.

We're slowly progressing into "The one" video game. Eventually all efforts will be compiled in increasingly singular fashion as they have been, as budgets rise and indie games become as scattered as rain.

This "The one" game will destroy gaming forever and all that will be left is itself, and 8bit Earthbound inspired depression rpgs.

Many have come close to being "The one". Call of Duty, Red Dead Redemption 2. Games will become games within games within games, all leading back to the single, ubergame.

And as usual Ganker will hate it.

    but the image is right
Videos games are about letting the player interact with your created world and tell THEIR story
Every single person did the same Bob zombie Battlefield missions, but no two people did them the exact same way, immersing themselves the same, yadda yadda you get it
But devs are so focused on trying to get AWARDS so they try to make it “NO THE PLAYER SHOULD FOLLOW MY LINEAR DESIGN WITH MY MOVIE AND THEIR ONLY INTERACTIVITY IS KILLING SCRIPTED ENEMIES AND INTERPRETING MY DEEP ENDING!”
