I liked the second undead campaign they added a couple years ago. Are there any new mainline campaigns this time?
Or are there are good default era user-made campaigns you recommend?

They Finally added the Drake Mainline and reworked the entire Under the Burning Suns Unit Roster so its basically an entirely new campaign.
They also keep edging towards making Invasion from the Unknown mainline but it seems nobody is exactly sure how to set it up to fit with the rest of the campaigns.

They also keep edging towards making Invasion from the Unknown mainline but it seems nobody is exactly sure how to set it up to fit with the rest of the campaigns.

They also reworked Eastern Invasion and its pretty good.
There seems to be an overarching meta-goal of interconnecting all the mainline Campaigns by era.
So now we have Heir Era in which a bunch of campaigns now exist to fill in the happenings surrounding Heir to the Throne.
The Founding Era in which all the major powers were established and why Wesnoth is full of factions trying to kill each other..
The Undead Era in which things would be relatively peaceful if not for various necromancers starting shit.
With Son of the Black-Eye taking place at the end of the normal timeline and Under the Burning Suns taking place in the post apocalyptic future.

Also Northern Rebirth is still a half finished mess that remains tucked away at the bottom of the campaigns because despite attempts to bring everything inline to a certain quality level. With NR anyone who wants to work on it is fighting against not only the sheer size and bloat for testing purposes but also player base nostalgia for a overall trashy campaign.

      OK I'm looking at
      https://units.wesnoth.org/1.18/mainline/en_US/mainline.html
the elf changes are bizarre, several units got huge ranged damage buffs and the elvish champion's melee attack was nerfed to be equal to the elvish marshal

They have also become Miserable to fight on any map with a decent amount of forests. Like that's there preferred terrain but holy frick is it miserable when every attack against the majority of their forces is a 30% hit chance.

wait nvm the champion has some sort of accuracy buff

The price increases are mostly for level 2 units and above, which you generally can't recruit, so all this does is make campaigns way easier (because your enemies can't afford as many units)

The game is open source, You can always b***h enough until community will undo moronic changes into what it was before. Eventually it will get changed.
Crying on Ganker never works out for best though, because this board is garbage and people here are only for flamewars and middle school tier shit flinging.

Yeah, this is why you don't touch rebalancing without asking community. Elves now are fricking busted. On bright side campaigns are fixed.

        ?
I might not of been round for some early on explicitly based era but the non-dunefolk (still have no mainline support) humans are based off the Celts, the only other non-white group is the Post-Apocalyptic Dessert Elves and even the Orc campaign is filled with savage moments.
Hell the new Drake Campaign, Winds of Fate is basically all about slaughtering the lesser races for meat.

          Anonymous

I think a lot of npcs were genderswapped recently
slaughtering lesser races is one thing, but women managing the household? unacceptable

            Anonymous

The only charterers I could see you doing that really with are the Elf Fighter, Elf Archer, Mages, Thieves and Footpads, as they are the only units with actual gender variance I can think off off the top of my head and none of them have any major role in any storyline unless you think generic ally #87 matters.

I briefly played this game over 3 years ago. What's the update pace? Have they actually added a lot in that timeframe?

The Actual amount of new content released in that time is pretty small especially if you don't play the multiplayer (Dunefolk was the big release for the 1.16 series but no Mainline Campaign and 1.17 was mainly a bugfix series) but there has been concerted efforts to refine stuff and make whats there as polished as the game can be.

I'm giving basic information to a newbie player anon, yeah I could talk about flanking, village acquisition, proper gold management, and when to train your commander. But that comes later. Finding a checkpoint and making sure you have a good roster of units for the endgame is foundational to most campaigns and the rest will naturally come when anon is pushed into those other aspects as the game goes on.

Mainline there's Decent into Darkness and to a lesser extent Under the Burning Suns but those are still mostly army based campaigns but the MC units have unique level up features attached. Malin and his Ghost once you get it have a lot of way to upgrade for instance but you will still need regular mooks to fight alongside you and eat damage.

The most important things to learn are
      1. Abuse terrain chokepoints: If a tile makes a unit 10% less likely to be hit put them there. In the same way try and force your opponents into terrain where they get fricked.
2.Cycle out injured Units: Most Fights are going to turn into your wall of guys vs their wall of guys. Because of this keep units in the back to step in when your initial line starts getting hit.
      3. Keep your units alive: related to 2 your units gain xp just for surviving attacks and more from getting a kill proper, these units can be recalled in the next fight and later campaigns expect you to have a solid core of already leveled soldiers ready to go by the final battle
      4. Encirclement is the best way to kill: One of the biggest reasons why keeping a proper line of units a line is that up to 6 can attack the same target in a turn so if the enmeies line breaks, surround their topps with you and they will have nowhere to run

As more of a mindset related answer you need to consider these games a little like they are puzzle games. Each map or faction has a solution that works for them and it's fine to do trial and error to see what works. And it might take a bit of time to figure it out.
Each game also has it's own set of rules and quirks. As long as you understand that you will always have to start the game by experimenting to see how things react then you don't have to feel bad that what you're doing isn't working.
You're not failing, you're just finding 10000 ways that don't work for this game.

But if figuring that stuff out isn't fun for you then maybe it's just not for you.

Wesnoth is a game with lots of little mechanics working together so there really isn't any "hidden trick/tip" to getting good. I can give a couple that are not already mentioned by the other two replies:
      (1) - Pay attention to weaknesses (blade, impact, fire, arcane, etc.). You can do this by pressing 'D' while hovering over a unit. This will help you decide which unit to train/recall for a specific scenario.
      (2) - Don't be afraid to use cheap level 1 units like orc grunts or spearman as 'shields'. Don't expose your important level 2/3 units to multiple empty tiles, since it allows multiple attacks from the enemy. In any game of Wesnoth, you WILL lose units, so the best way to play is to only lose units you can afford to lose.
      (3) - Know when to retreat from a forward village. Losing a village to the enemy is sometimes better than losing a unit.

      1. Don't be afraid to "savescum" and experiment with game. The game is highly replayable and is possible to learn to play. Don't listen to stupid people about manipulating checkpoints with saves. Check your turns. Look at what you did right or wrong. That's how you mainly get good at this game.
      2. Look up in which zones/terrains your units are strongest (e.g. dwarves are best on mountains terrains, elves are best when used in forest terrain, orcs with trolls are best when used at night, etc.) and abuse it.
      3. Pay attention to units "personalities". Some units are faster in combat and will have priority, some are tankier and can take more beating, etc. Remember that.
      3. Don't leave your units in multiple open tiles, form unit lines and if possible surround your enemy, otherwise you'll get circled by enemy and wiped quickly. Most people get filtered with this.
      4. Always have cannon fodder along with high level units mixed together and don't rely entirely on high level units.

Sometimes noobs refuse to let anyone die, instead you should be willing to sacrifice fodder units to protect important ones
Basically if there's even the slightest chance your loyal unit could die, make sure the AI prefers to attack a disposable lvl1 instead
Also know when to retreat instead of always pushing forward
And abuse leadership and illumination by moving one tile at a time so many units benefit
If you go to the campaign feedback part of the forums you can find save files from other players, maybe you'd benefit from watching someone clear a difficult campaign without resetting

It's same with all medieval fantasy games. Best example is Fire Emblem. You won't see moment without community making incest jokes.

But it completely would make sense in a medieval context. The motherfricker speaks like he has modern real world ethics

Have any of you actually made anything of your own?
I mean, the Editor Tool seems decent enough, but I'm not sure if it'd work for scenarios. Do I really have to learn to to program LUA if I want to make a campaign of my own?

Nope. But I have actually fantasized about making a Command & Conquer mod. Especially a C&C TIberian Sun mod for Wesnoth.

I remember playing Kalenz's campaign and I got to the level where he goes to the elven city a second time and has to fight like 6 orc teams at once. It was an absolute insane slog, killing the orange troll in the top alone took like 30 minutes because they all kept shitting out level 2 units. I just went frick it and quit the game and never played Wesnoth since

I remember one of the long campaigns where you had to kill 4 Troll Chiefs in 4 caves. Shit was unbeatable for me on Hard difficulty. Never finished it except on lower difficulties. I just kept running out of turns.

how have I never heard of this game until now? I just installed it and played the tutorial and it was pretty fun.

Is it good for multiplayer? I'd wanna do a duo campaign with a friend. Seems like most of the campaigns are 1 player only.

Yeah it's great for people with low end computers.

PVP multiplayer is good if you're into that
There is one mainline multiplayer campaign: legend of wesmere
      unless they changed it.

well I checked the multiplayer options and it seems like you can have a randomly generated campaign as well. which is fine for us I don't really care about the "story".

I mean, it's weird. I get the changes they made to Eastern Invasion, and I really like how Owaec feels like an actual character now but, I feel like some changes were meaningless. That there was just so much shit you didn't have to change.

Can't believe Wesnoth is still being developed. Played that shit in 2007 and thought it was neat.

Is there any addon to fix balance in 1.18 or should I just revert to 1.16?

I can't even find a place where the balance changes are being discussed
