The game's actually so incredibly f2p friendly now it's crazy. Not even meming, you can get a loaner deck (it's called loaner but you get it permanently after a week) good enough to reach legend within an hour or two of playing.
loaner deck gives you 80 cards, catch up packs give you 800+ cards (and you get them right now for free and more of them the less you have).
Microsoft is hopefully trying to put more money into the game (badlands seems alright) (would love to see another solo mode) or maybe this is the last death rattle for a downtrending game
another problem is they've nerfed the rewards tracks exp gain for a few modes multiple times so it takes longer without the bp so more annoying cash shop trend
Literally this, I enjoy hearthstone but spending 50 dollars for one guaranteed legendary is fucking stupid. And that's in a bundle, without it it's even more.
I get quite a few from the rewards track but yeah, if you don't like grinding in the f2p route it's a bit much for the newest cards. If you get the oldest cards though with catch up and freepacks, you can have many legendaries.
Its not pay to win, its pay to actually have fun, all the best decks are cheap, maybe requiring 1 or 2 legendaries but extremely boring to play, while all the fun meme decks require lots of legendaries and epics
IIRC, outside of new expansions, the battleground mode it has is the most popular mode and mercs was only popular because people could AFK in it. It's literally just being propped up by auxiliary shit they've added in it. Surprised Rumble isn't in it.
Biggest issue is they made the game faster and faster while forcing MTX harder and harder. Minisets are literally designed to milk more gold from the player base for the few unique cards they have so they won't have more gold for the next expansion. They even went as far as removing the gold option to buy the battleground pass because if you only ever played battlegrounds you could always buy the pass with pure gold and now it's like 15 dollars per "season" so it's not even a permanent thing.
Seriously though - the game is so fast you can lose in like 3 fucking turns
Most cards became RNG INTO RNG INTO RNG INTO RNG STATS, which was happening on marvel snap and made me quit as well
This. Yogg was the turning point for the game but the playerbase instead of complaining about it praised it and the game had a massive spike in popularity during that expansion so Blizzard started pandering to casino bullshit to try to recapture that peak and ruined the game in the process. I remember having lots of fun playing Mage in early Hearthstone, calculating lethal lines with Freeze Mage and predicting my turns in advance but then every new card they would print would be some RNG garbage and made me quit. It got especially bad after discover.
i remember all of that
still wasnt as bas as it got with the expansions
hearthstone is a game that peaked at launch, as it is common with blizzard games (same thing with wow and overwatch)
Yes, in fact I still remember people making fun of HS because of that (e.g. Ragnaros and Sylvanas) from the very beginning but the problem is that instead of adding less rng Blizzard did the exact opposite. There was rng in HS but the game was still enjoyable.

It's fucking depressing in hindsight because Old Gods was a godlike expansion if it wasnt for those rng cards and of course Blizzard thought the success of that expansion was due to Yogg highlights instead of the balance and giving out free legendaries that you could built a deck around.
HS was so much wasted potential tbh but its not surprising since its Blizzard we're talking about, they also fucked up HoTS and fucking Overwatch which was the biggest game of its time at some point.
You mean the initial blight of game design that Blizzard used to justify more RNG bullshit because "lmao, card games are ALWAYS random, you're dealing with a random deck of cards, aren't you?" as if that gives them carte blanche to print shit like Yogg?
I stopped playing when they started introducing new expansions too fast (around when that new gamemode battlegrounds or whatever was introduced). Couldn't keep up with new cards.
Became more and more pay2win and powercreep. Every next expansion you had to buy it, and also buy new fresh decks to get the cards that you need because your old cards became obsolete
Shudderwock wasn't even remotely the most broken shit from that expansion. Sure the card has warped Wild but it wasn't as bad as Genn or Baku.
Honestly Witchwood was one of the worst time periods of the game, mostly because it came off the back of the other most broken expansion in the game (Kobolds). Holy fuck just fuck those sets.
1. dogshit rng and rng archetypes being forced over real card support
2. the biggest powercreep in card games
3. disgusting monetization especially early on before there were legendary pity timers
4. zero and i mean 0 alternative ways to play the game added until the game was ruined by other stuff
5. the most retarded balance team in card games
6. rotations unironically. i've see yugioh players praising hearthstone rotations over the years but the thing is that hearthstone had rotations since the start so the game never got the chance to mature, rotations are good if your game has 1000s of cards but in the case of hearthstone you'd see beloved cards rotating out to force you to play with new shitty cards
I mean rotations you can always play in wild mode but yeah I know what you mean
I think the main problem with hs is lack of game modes, the different ways to play this game always boils down to who can put more stats on the board rather than saving, making a smart play, countering, etc
oh yeah i also forgot how overdesigned the cards became

blizzard has never supported wild since it was introduced almost a decade ago. it was always an afterthought
blizzard's obsession with esports in the past decade bit them in the ass HARD, it completely killed overwatch and held back hearthstone immensely. they forced standards down everyone's throat until the game died
>the biggest powercreep in card games
haha no, you've never played Yugioh in your life have you?
yugioh's powercreep only got bad recently, and the fact that yugioh doesnt have rotations means you can invest in staples knowing they will be relevant for a long time. i have hundreds of cards in master duel that i crafted back when the game launched that are still as relevant as ever. the powercreep is mostly in archetypes and while it is a thing the cost to buy a new archetype every selection pack is much MUCH less than to keep up with hearthstone and rotations. literally all my hearthstone cards have rotated out lol i would have to start from zero if i wanted to get back into it
you are talking about ancient fucking yugioh bro next you are gonna talk about cyber dragon? the powercreep in master duel is nowhere near as bad as hearthstone. i already talked about it in the post you quoted, all my hearthstone cards are UNPLAYABLE unless i play wild which is a mode that has never been supported by blizzard exactly for that reason. i have no cards. meanwhile if i had dropped master duel 1 year ago and came back now not only i could still play my cards in the official standard but those cards would still be meta relevant.
the esports bullshit also killed starcraft, its fair to say every blizzard game in the past decade suffered because of some sort of autistic obsession with esports
diablo 3 might be the only exception
overwatch literally died because of that. refusing to balance the game because ''pro deal with it'' until the tank meta not only killed the first game but also forced them to make overwatch 2 into a 5v5 snorefest. blizzard's obsession with league of legends was their ruin
>blizzard has never supported wild since it was introduced almost a decade ago. it was always an afterthought
They've nerfed and buffed numerous Wild-only cards at this point so you're objectively false. Sure it's still a red-headed stepchild to Standard, but it is actually playable now and actually gets new powerful decks (Even DK, for example).
im pretty sure blizzard didnt nerf a single wild card in years after the mode launched and has never hosted tournament for it. its so fucking funny that blizzard managed to fuck up so hard with hearthstone because it was a literal magic clone and they could have just ported everything from that game and had modern, commander, legacy etc instead they let the game rot in boring ass rotation standard with ridiculous powercreep until it died
>you are talking about ancient fucking yugioh bro
you were the one to make the claim that power creep only got bad in yugioh recently so yes I am giving you ancient fucking powercreep bro
I'm giving you the oldest god damn powercreep in the game because you specifically asked for it, and you didn't say online card game, you said card game, master duel is just one way to play yugioh
you ignored the rest of my post TWO times lmao
can't believe there are still hearthstone shills in 20 fucking 23 lmao
2 weeks ago
Anonymous
set rotations are not power creep
and Yugioh also has set rotations of a sort, where they ban a key card of an archetype making said archetype unplayable as to force people to buy the new cards
the esports bullshit also killed starcraft, its fair to say every blizzard game in the past decade suffered because of some sort of autistic obsession with esports
diablo 3 might be the only exception

>the biggest powercreep in card games
haha no, you've never played Yugioh in your life have you?
the think about yugioh power creep is the game has over 10k cards over 25 years and the way they address issues aside from a banlist is they print ways to play going second. Hearthstone has rotation but still power creeps cards and never addresses its core issues in card design
shit balancing, blizzard just refused to hit problem decks until they were droped for the next broken shit (remember patron warrior?)
over reliance on rng, gnomes and goblins exp was the biggest offender, basically they introduced cards that could instawin games if they dice roll say so, mechanics like transform and summon random killed deckbuilding, many pro players started walk away after this because really, whats the point of play perfectly if a retard can sit on dr boom and wipe your board with boom bots?
also awful awful monetization, the only game that have charged me so much for digitasal cards is duel links and anyone with a brain should be avoiding that crap
I'm just here to say FUCK Discover. It was okay when it was first implemented, but once it devolved in to >Tee-hee just play around the dozen possible cards I could've just generated, including other Discover cards that can Discover other Discover cards
I was done with the game
Yeah Discover was fucking awful. It should've always worked like how Tracking does (discover 3 cards in your deck) but now it's so engrained in the game it would be impossible to pull that cancer out without killing the host.
>Reborn, Rush, Battlecry: Excavate a (you), Outcast: Fuck my ass, Manathirst (8): fuck my ass but different, Quickdraw: add one of the many retarded keywords I missed.
Also HS died after old gods and anyone citing anything later as the problem is a homosexual
picrel happened
the "discover" keyword fucking happened
no one realized how disgusting mechanics like these were until it was too late
it wasn't so bad when it was a 2 mana 1/1 shitter scarab that gave you a three drop, but they just kept on adding more and better and yet more and yet betterer card generation
eventually the game degenerated into an RNGfest where your starting deck has like 30% of influence and the game is decided by getting better bullshit generated cards than your opponent
and then blizzard basically full-commited into making hearthstone a retarded 4fun unserious gimmick card game rather than the only kind of retarded 4fun half-unserious game it was before
tombs of terror though has an amazing single player roguelike mode, download the client just for that and don't have to deal with p2w bullshit and the latest cards are in the discovery pool
The keyword itself wasn't the problem, it was the amount of free value you could generate with the cards they designed.
t. stopped playing during the patch with the 3/9 taunt warlock minion
outside of all the other problems this game had (monetization, content etc) strictily talking about gameplay, blizzard has showed time and time again that they are the worst company at balancing competitive games
hearthstone was the most competitive at fucking launch before they made any changes
The most pay to win cardgame I ever saw. >bu bu bu muh paper
You can rent cards and decks, you can buy cards individually by a dollar and build a fun deck, you can trade cards, you can use proxies, etc etc.
So no card game is as pay to win as Digital Card Games.
1. Ben Brode left who was the entire creative vision for the game
2. Standard, they introduced a gamemode as the main way to play that meant you can only play with cards in the basic set and with cards from the last 2 years
3. They continued to nerf cards from the older sets to force players to buy the newer sets
These are the 3 main reasons the game died, other reasons like their increased monetization of other game modes, bad card art and concepts and big creators for the game abandoning it/dying are repercussions of the events above
>2. Standard, they introduced a gamemode as the main way to play that meant you can only play with cards in the basic set and with cards from the last 2 years >3. They continued to nerf cards from the older sets to force players to buy the newer sets
Both these things happened when Ben Chode was still at Blizzard you fucking retard.
Ben was the one actively pushing for more "hilarious" RNG in cards, that fuck wouldn't know good design if it hit him in the fucking face.
I left during the descent of dragons bullshit. As a f2p arena guy I was able to keep up until then but when they removed adventures which gave you complete playsets of everything for a set amount of gold and just did more packs.
I quit during Un'Goro because of discover and unfun quests (Rogue). Then came back during Witchwood and had fun again. Quit again right after that because of the powercreep and I think a rotation that hit all my good cards. Briefly came back during Rise of Shadows but quit back right after for the same reasons. At this point I was very done with the game, not even Demon Hunter made me come back, I also think I wasn't the only one frustrated with the game because Blizzard released Demon Hunter at all (first new class in 7 years?). I tried to come back a couple of times a year during 2021 but the game was just lame and unfun at that point so I gave up on it. My main issue with the game has always been how difficult it was for f2p to compete especially if you didn't care/had time to grind Arena. I managed to put up with that for a while back when the game was (at least to me) good aka 2014-2016 since I played a lot and got lots of gold because of that but as the game got worse I played less and got even more behind. The rotations destroyed f2p players and even when I wasn't affected by them I still felt they were lame because we'd lose fun cards that'd get replaced by bad ones so you'd feel less powerful than you were a day earlier for the sake of forcing you to buy packs. I thought it was nostalgia at first but then I played classic again in 2021 and had a blast for the time it was alive so no I just think the game was handled badly. 2014 hearthstone is probably the most fun I had in a card game, only the first months of Master duel came close and I still think I had more fun in hearthstone. It's a shame how this game went.
why are blizzard's premade decks always anti-synergy dogshit? like back in WitchWood they made this deck with 6 minions total (all expensive) where the pay-off was Hagatha hero card, who requires you to play minions for spells
when i stopped they had a beast hunter deck with like 5 beasts and 10+ cards to draw them
Cora happened.
But seriously the dev team changed from guys with a clear cut vision to a combination of pros who love solitaire and absolute fucking retards with no credentials other than forcing legend with secret paladin and casting some tournaments.
I dropped it around when Warlock got that dumb fucking quest to make damaging yourself hurt the opponent or something. The game just became solitaire at that point and it was tiresome to all hell.
every time I want to get back in to this game I just look up the new druid cards
playing a match against any druid or priest meta deck at any point in this game's history is what game designers call a "quit moment"
They also don't balance shit anymore. They release obviously broken shit and just fix it later. I have no idea how braindead the internal testers are to look at some cards and noy see the obvious issues they will bring.
Only non-salty and legitimately good Hearthstone player in this thread. The main problem is that the game just never evolved and they functionally killed Arena, their best game mode. At some point they just stopped caring about balance in Arena and that led to constructed being the only viable game mode (that isn't Battlegrounds which is just a different game)
Constructed just had the same archetypes for years. Not just general ones like aggro, control, or midrange but shit like singleton, cost matters, quests, and other random gimmicks. New significant core mechanics like 'activating' abilities should've been added years ago. They were also going to add a tournament mode or whatever and just scrapped it to double down on more casual garbage which was novel for a month before people abandoned them.
>be me >bg chad >only play bgs >dont buy season passes >have all of these meme packs and gold that I'll never use >shit on the 2 devs left working on the game whenever possible
Pre Release >"This card is pretty good!Good value!" >"This card is pretty bad! No value!"
On Release >Card he said was good: It's shit >Card he said was bad: It's broken
that's because people thought that "WARNING: Bots may explode" implied something negative
turns out doctor 7 simply had no drawbacks whatsoever for being a 7 mana 9/9
>bro why do they invalidate all the good decks every year? They don't do that in yugioh! >Well yes I do buy a new better deck every year to stay competitive, why do you ask?
I got sick of playing with whales that used OP cards that f2p players couldn't get.
It got to the point that I just quit games as soon as they were played.
And this was in unranked so it's probably 10x as cancerous in ranked.
>He made Blizzard suck CCP cock and damage their brand with human rights groups. >And the CCP STILL kicked Blizzard out of the country a year later.
What a Chad!
discover, unkillable boards, infinite healing, infinite value, combo finishes and hand disruption (stop putting this in card games unless it's for midrange mirrors)
i don't really think rng is or was the problem when discover exists
that's the problem, discover is rng, everything is discover from a random pool of bullshit, if when you discovered, you'd have fixed options like vanilla 2mana 2/2 4mana 4/4 or 6mana 6/6 for example when you discover creature it would be fine but instead it's a random creature from a huge ass pool even if it's just neutral and class, it's not specific nor curated well enough.
so discover is two things-card advantage, and giving players extra copies of their best card so you can't make decisions around players only having one copy of that card or having already played that card. that's the problem with discover. getting an additional 6/6 or whatever isn't good for the game either because it's a 2for1 that punishes 1for1 removal.
The current devs are just a different poison. Power creeping every fucking set like rotation doesnt exist and nerfing all of the obviously broken shit every three weeks isnt exactly consumer friendly either..
Also cora is a fat entitled fucking cunt
Devs sometimes makes a card, and it boggles everyones mind for publishing said card with such horrible design. Like picrel.
Other honorable mentions: >Glitter Moth >The entire Icememe build they tried to push on shaman in Knights of the Frozen Throne, imagine having the new releases for your favorite class be nullified for an entire expansion >Desert Monolith
blizzdrones just move on to consume the next main thing
and anything blizzard does aren't very interesting to begin with
f2p players couldn't keep up with new cards
no fun allowed
this
even if you have all the cards the game has been shit for years. that's hardly the problem
I gave up exactly because of this after like the first year. Completely unplayable.

went to shit when shitzzard added rng to it and all the twitchzoomers pogged at it instead of complaining so shitzzard turned everything into rng
This. Yogg was the turning point for the game but the playerbase instead of complaining about it praised it and the game had a massive spike in popularity during that expansion so Blizzard started pandering to casino bullshit to try to recapture that peak and ruined the game in the process. >I enjoyed playing single player mage
Stop
The rng in GVG vastly predates yogg, who then got gutted despite blizz continuing to double down on rng
there always was RNG shit in the game, or are we going to conveniently forget that spellpower totem into 4 damage lightning storm was a thing?
thats true but it was never as bad as it gotten later on
Rag lethal was a thing, hell I believe someone lost a major tournament over a 1 in 5 Rag lethal
Don't forget Sylvanas RNG either
And those were 2 of the most popular neutral legendaries
it always had a pretty bad element of RNG
i remember all of that

It all went to shit when they started vaulting cards
This shit instantly ruins any interest I have in a card game. After the fifth card game I played started pulling this shit I simply quit online CCGs.
If you come back now, you basically get the entire previous seasons cards for free via catch up card packs.
>j-just come back and grind like a piggie goy we are finally giving out free stuff to f2p players now that the game is dead!
kek
rest in piss blizzard
800 cards for free (and you can buy multiple catch up packs, further filling out at diminishing value) is basically thousands of dollars worth
the new cards are so powercreeped those 800 previous are worth literally nothing
>is basically thousands of dollars worth
Ok Bobby. Those cards have NO, ZERO intrinsic fucking value, go shill your game somewhere else.
Became more and more pay2win and powercreep. Every next expansion you had to buy it, and also buy new fresh decks to get the cards that you need because your old cards became obsolete
This killed it for alot of people including me until release of Demon Hunter. Then i quit again after that expansion.

it wasn't so bad when it was a 2 mana 1/1 shitter scarab that gave you a three drop, but they just kept on adding more and better and yet more and yet betterer card generation
eventually the game degenerated into an RNGfest where your starting deck has like 30% of influence and the game is decided by getting better bullshit generated cards than your opponent
and then blizzard basically full-commited into making hearthstone a retarded 4fun unserious gimmick card game rather than the only kind of retarded 4fun half-unserious game it was before
tombs of terror though has an amazing single player roguelike mode, download the client just for that and don't have to deal with p2w bullshit and the latest cards are in the discovery pool
The keyword itself wasn't the problem, it was the amount of free value you could generate with the cards they designed.
t. stopped playing during the patch with the 3/9 taunt warlock minion
>3/9 taunt warlock minion
>When it died it made three 1/3 taunt minions
>oh and it got pulled out on turn 4/5, tee hee
FUCK Kobolds.
there's a vanilla 4 mana 6/5 these days (rip yeti)
it's unplayable garbage
outside of all the other problems this game had (monetization, content etc) strictily talking about gameplay, blizzard has showed time and time again that they are the worst company at balancing competitive games
hearthstone was the most competitive at fucking launch before they made any changes
The most pay to win cardgame I ever saw.
>bu bu bu muh paper
You can rent cards and decks, you can buy cards individually by a dollar and build a fun deck, you can trade cards, you can use proxies, etc etc.
So no card game is as pay to win as Digital Card Games.
too expensive
your money didn't go very far
too time consuming
invalidating peoples collections once a year
ranked ladder
A couple things;
>2. Standard, they introduced a gamemode as the main way to play that meant you can only play with cards in the basic set and with cards from the last 2 years
>3. They continued to nerf cards from the older sets to force players to buy the newer sets
Both these things happened when Ben Chode was still at Blizzard you fucking retard.
Ben was the one actively pushing for more "hilarious" RNG in cards, that fuck wouldn't know good design if it hit him in the fucking face.
>Hearthstone is dying
TWO
MORE
WEEKs
Hearthstone is always "dying". KEK
This time it seems real.
Lowest number of players ever.
It is already dead. That's why they put it on steam.
The moment, THE moment that Hearthstone died was Paveling Book.
>Big Priest deck that lived or died on the 1 big creature in the deck never getting drawn
Peak scumminess when I was still playing.
Moving the esports to YT killed that scene.
They also don't balance shit anymore. They release obviously broken shit and just fix it later. I have no idea how braindead the internal testers are to look at some cards and noy see the obvious issues they will bring.
Games age and get replaced by the new thing.
I remember watching Kripp and being pro arena player. BGs just aren't the same. It's trendy casino game.
Blizzard became cucked when it got taken over by activision.
>be me
>bg chad
>only play bgs
>dont buy season passes
>have all of these meme packs and gold that I'll never use
>shit on the 2 devs left working on the game whenever possible
THE VALUE
do you think he fucked mia malkova
Absolutely.
I completely forgot about this nigga. Did he take a lot of shit from the DRUMPF fags?
Pre Release
>"This card is pretty good!Good value!"
>"This card is pretty bad! No value!"
On Release
>Card he said was good: It's shit
>Card he said was bad: It's broken
His dry sense of humour and awful predictions were always part of his charm.
wrong 7/7 people were wrong about
God I hated that fucker. One of the reasons I stopped playing.
If this were printed today it would summon 4 boombots and they would all have rush.
that's because people thought that "WARNING: Bots may explode" implied something negative
turns out doctor 7 simply had no drawbacks whatsoever for being a 7 mana 9/9
>bro why do they invalidate all the good decks every year? They don't do that in yugioh!
>Well yes I do buy a new better deck every year to stay competitive, why do you ask?
>yugioh
>buying cards
I just used YGOPro so you have access to every card. The game is still cancer though because of 20 years of power creep.
I got sick of playing with whales that used OP cards that f2p players couldn't get.
It got to the point that I just quit games as soon as they were played.
And this was in unranked so it's probably 10x as cancerous in ranked.
Stopped playing around the time they cleaned up all the gore and cleavages from the cards.
The west has fallen amirite
ENTER
>He made Blizzard suck CCP cock and damage their brand with human rights groups.
>And the CCP STILL kicked Blizzard out of the country a year later.
What a Chad!
The israelites who pushed HS killed the most soulful and best Magic competitor to come out for it. Ill never forgive blizzard for it.
discover, unkillable boards, infinite healing, infinite value, combo finishes and hand disruption (stop putting this in card games unless it's for midrange mirrors)
i don't really think rng is or was the problem when discover exists
that's the problem, discover is rng, everything is discover from a random pool of bullshit, if when you discovered, you'd have fixed options like vanilla 2mana 2/2 4mana 4/4 or 6mana 6/6 for example when you discover creature it would be fine but instead it's a random creature from a huge ass pool even if it's just neutral and class, it's not specific nor curated well enough.
so discover is two things-card advantage, and giving players extra copies of their best card so you can't make decisions around players only having one copy of that card or having already played that card. that's the problem with discover. getting an additional 6/6 or whatever isn't good for the game either because it's a 2for1 that punishes 1for1 removal.
its really fun now
I'm loving my naga DH
brode left
brode was THE reason why HS went downhill though
anti consumer piece of shit
The current devs are just a different poison. Power creeping every fucking set like rotation doesnt exist and nerfing all of the obviously broken shit every three weeks isnt exactly consumer friendly either..
Also cora is a fat entitled fucking cunt
I disagree
I realised I really enjoy at least one expansion per year, sometimes two
Trying to force e-sports instead of FUN
When do they release a PvE standalone? That'll be the only way I would ever touch this franchise.
Devs sometimes makes a card, and it boggles everyones mind for publishing said card with such horrible design. Like picrel.
Other honorable mentions:
>Glitter Moth
>The entire Icememe build they tried to push on shaman in Knights of the Frozen Throne, imagine having the new releases for your favorite class be nullified for an entire expansion
>Desert Monolith
Brode was the soul of this game, now it's ran by homosexuals and women.
play marvel snap then. the "random a random random" spirit lives on
I am but Marvel Snap sadly doesn't have a true limited mode
got too fucking greedy. too expensive.
they started hiring streamers to make the game and the average match time went up
i can play 4 or 5 marvel snap matches in the same amount of time it takes to lose one hearthstone match that i knew i would lose from turn 2
