    >b-but it learns from the work of human artist
So it's the same as any other artist? No artist creates in a vacuum. There are plenty of artist who are clearly inspired by and trained in mimicking other artist styles. Published art is basically free use, because you can't stop people from taking inspiration from it, AI is just a tool to speed the process up. AI will get better too, eventually it might not need to see other art styles, it might be able to create its own. If a few artist have to die in the name of humanities AI baby, then so be it. Shutting down AI because of artist feefees is stupid, the AI learning used today could one day to improve more important things like in medical fields. AI will never be able to run in the future if we don't let it walk now. You college dropouts aren't gonna take my glorious AI future from me.

Wrong. Everything that the AI does is protected by law. Taking inspiration from another picture is not and will never bee a copyright violation. The only way to make copyright violations with AI is by purposely ordering the AI to do it.

Not for long, homosexual. AI has been spitting out exact copies of its input pictures if the prompts get too specific. That may work on art school failsons who can only write sad articles but it's only a matter of time before some big litigious hairtrigger psycho gets involved (e.g. Getty images). Copyright laws in the US are extremely fricked (and thus the rest of the world must follow suit) - you can't carve out special exceptions for robots doing what would be very illegal for humans except faster.

and yet we have to. AI isn't going to go away. We can bury our heads and say it's not fair, but the better use of time would be figuring out how we are going to live with it.

          Anonymous

It doesn't take inspitation since it cannot get outside of it's visual library. If you feed the AI only photos of real life it will only be able to output realistic pictures, while all the ancient art made by humans when there was only real life to be inspired by was always stylized, and not realistic. Even when art moved to more accurate depictions of reality it still had intentional stylistic quirks. AI wouldn't be able to do the same because it simply remixes it's visual library, without adding anything new.

We've had plenty of games in the last decade that don't use AI for assets but they just might as well. Human work is vastly overrated. "Artists" are aplenty. Most of the shit I've seen in terms of art direction is taken from somewhere else, which is not much different from what AI does, except these are real humans that nag you if you don't pay enough and will b***h and moan and act like they're better than you. The only complaint I'll get from stable diffusion is out of memory errors. You are like roasties complaining about fembots. People have very modern ideas about the role of the artist, that the artist is a TORTURED genius who IMMORTALIZES his own experiences through poetry and prose, instead of...you know...just another skilled laborer working in a stigmatized field.

You know, that attitude that doesn't do creative workers any favors at all?

    >You get paid in experience, right?
    >Will you accept this exposure as payment?
    >Isn't doing it for the love of the art enough?
    >But what's your REAL job Will?
    >Like what I do? Check out my Patreon page!

But really, look at the word that describes Shakespeare: Playwright.

Not playwrite, playWRIGHT. Like shipwright or cartwright, he was a person who wrought plays, he was a craftsman. Shakespeare lived and worked before the romantic notion of the tortured artist took hold. It's a fiction created by people who had very specific ideas about the role of the artist in society, a role that Shakespeare the man couldn't play. It's the reason why Shakespeare's authorship question even exists.

No, you'd only find this impressive if you were a teenager and this was your first technology hype cycle. All new technology has periods of massive growth like this, then they face a hard problem (like hands lol) and they slow down or never advance.

. No technology improves at the same speed forever. Many just stop or improve very slowly. It's easy to make AI produce art for people with a room temperature IQ. It's hard to make AI produce art for anyone who is even slightly observant. AI will probably never do it.

As it currently stands, things aren't slowing down. The very nature of machine learning means that it will continue learning as long as it is being taught. To say nothing about the techniques and hardware improving alongside it

I'm not even 30 and I remember a world completely unlike the one we live in. You're right, big new technologies have periods of massive growth, and when they're done, when (if) they eventually slow down, the world has changed. I saw it with mobile phones. I saw it with the internet. I'm seeing it again right now.

Neural nets have succeeded. We already have the incredible new technology even if it stagnates from here (no sign of that happening for now though). We're currently at the phase of finding applications for it, which are popping up all over in places no-one ever expected. Image generation, natural language, voice synthesis, a lot of this stuff was thought of as basically impossible for computers to do a decade ago.

It's not expensive, it's appealing, it's easy to use, hard to master, virtually no barrier to entry. It has all the making of a hit. morons comparing it to fricking 3D printing that requires a ridiculous amount of know how, and investment is beyond brain dead. AI only benefits the consumer. It will force artist to bring down their inflated commission prices to compete. The current issue is we have more demand for art than we have artist. If AI can get rid of all the cheap filler art that society needs, then that will free up the human artist to take on more commissions for good art. Artist should work with AI to make their jobs more enjoyable. The smart artist let's AI do the boring jobs.

Smaller artists are upset because they simply don’t have the skill to do meaningful art. Their niche is drawing low quality shit for people with weird fetishes or insane requests, which doesn’t really matter now because the AI can cook up halfway decent shit instantly. Good artists don’t give a shit because their places aren’t changed.

Fair use protects AI. You can copy things in a lot of ways that are perfectly allowed under fair use. If art is used in a transformative way, you're nearly guaranteed that that is a fair use application. You might be shocked at how close some of those uses are in terms of how little transformation is needed for it to actually be used. It's not just transformative uses as well by the way there are other conditions that allow Fair uses of copyrighted works. There is no need for consent either.

      Anonymous

      >Fair use protects AI.
Not proven in court. If some twitter homosexual told you this, it's pure hype. AI will get destroyed when it's challenged in court.

        Anonymous

It will. Have a look at these two images here it's an example of transformative use of an entire copyrighted work. Comic artist Trina Roberts reworks the entirety of Reginald marshes 1934 painting "high yellow" in the opening panel of Lulu's back in Town" in 1976. While it retains nearly EVERY aspect of Marsh's composition and figure poses, Robert's has completely altered the original work style and format. This is a great example of transformative use of artwork and it actually validates basically every single AI generated artwork that people have grabbed onto to claim that was copying their own original work in some way.

What if artists train AI on their own art (fixing shit as needed) then sell them off? Then draw their passions and ideas on the side, maybe even get paid for it via patreon/subscribestar? It's a win-win.

Why would people pay them anything if they can just train a model on their style and then touch up the results? If you weren't already established it's over, move on.

It’s bizarre to me that Ganker is so split on this matter. It’s not like this shit personally affects you. Professional artists will continue doing what they’re doing. You simply have the option now to make some mediocre art of whatever moronic idea pops into your head instantly, with varying levels of quality. Maybe it’ll improve in the future. Maybe it won’t. Just use it for whatever you deem necessary or fun and that’s it for now.

The problem with AI art is that it's flooding websites meant for human art. Even the AI hypegays, who think AI will improve forever, should be concerned about this, because the next generation of AI is going to be trained on datasets that include art from the current generation, which means current-gen AI mistakes might stick around forever.

The difference is that mistakes that humans make are soulful and mistakes that AIs make are soulless. Just look at

. You would never see art from a human so detailed that also has an constant ugly reminder that the thing that created it has never seen a dog in the way that you or I see a dog, and it just recreated one with a statistical model. Anime faces have cat proportions because those proportions are neotenous, which humans find cute. It's not even close to the same thing.

But ai tards won't be bothered by it because despite all their claims about this shit "improving" they're still generating the same generic and deformed pictures. They don't care about quality output, they only care about fast and constant output. They want the dopamine of feeling like they accomplished something without actually putting in the effort. It's why they never stay in their generals. They're all doing the same thing of typing words into an image generator and seeing what comes out, so their circlejerking is limited. This is also why ai tards came up with shit like "prompt stealing" or calling themselves "prompt engineers." Calling these people grifters isn't original but it is always appropriate.

Every artist uses techniques, methods, and art styles devised by others. No, AI "doesn't steal your art" when it's trained on your art, no more than you are stealing other's art when you look at it and inspiration from it. Your argument is that some homosexual hobbyists on the net make some images resembling those styles. Wrong, you can create something small by hand and have AI do all the content using the IP you just created.

            Anonymous

You have to do a lot of art yourself if you want to train an AI model to create art for your own original IP using your own original art. And even then, I think the ruling was that AI created stuff cannot be copyrighted full stop because copyrights are only handed out to things made by humans, so the context of the creation doesn't really matter because it is still AI generated, which disqualifies it for copyright.

And if a human later edits or somehow polishes whatever AI spew out? Why couldn't that be copyrighted?

                Anonymous

Because polishing what an AI produced is editing. You (or any real human) has to CREATE the work for it to be eligible for copyright.

                Expanding on my point here

Right now you copyright something to make sure that nobody can steal your hard work for themselves and profit without your consent.

What does a world look like where you can generate a shitload of products but not copyright any of it? Bargain bin prices and FLOOD the market with so much shit that SOME of it is going to sell no matter what. Your costs have gone down so much because you fired half your creative team/managers watching over them.

Copyright over artwork just doesn't matter because patreon shit isn't threatened over the artwork being sold in ten different places by random people

With Disney shit it doesn't matter because the IP is protected so you can't sell AI artwork of Mickey Mouse anyway

What i meant is, if AI becomes good enough to pass as "real" art, how will you know if it can be granted copyright or not?
How will you know if an actual person created it or a computer?

It's only indistinguishable if you're a normalgay with no skills.

yes, i know. I'm talking about a theoretical future

It doesn't matter if a computer, a chimp, a banana or God himself came to earth to a draw a character, what matter is the contract.
If corporate Disney uses a machine to draw robot mickey, and publicly releases that design, disney owns the copyright over robot mickey, however, I think we should decrease the protection time machine assisted designs, in US, copyright has around 70 years of protection or more, machine assisted designs, or machine assisted works should have 5 years.

Got a fun story. I went to a restaurant yesterday for the first time in about 5 years. Supposedly the best burgers tri-state area. When I bit into this burger I was revolted. It tasted like a mix of bleach and clay dirt, slight hint of ammonia. I spat it out after the first bit, the after taste remained. Started puking on my plate because I was so disgusted. I told the waiter and guess what he said?

That's like saying that if you run a business, and someone steals stuff from your business and resells it, you've "lost nothing besides attention". First all, the attention is how the business makes money in the first place, and second of all it's not yours to take and resell.

I don't think that's even a good argument for a guy that makes comics though. As far as I know there's not any AI that can just generate a comic strip that people would actually want to read. Sure you could use AI generation to MAKE one but you would still need to edit/write the text yourself.
