Gave up right them and there, so much for trying to replay the game on hard after not playing it in a long time, and i was gunning for a franchise replay too. Well, maybe next year.
Not a total disaster like I was expecting it to be, but I can understand why it isn't popular. It was probably the hardest of the classic games for me, and it was the one for which I was trying my hardest not to kill everything in sight.
I'm expecting it to go completely off the rails midway through the castle section and become something entirely different from the original as far as plot, locations and some enemies go.
Capcom knows RE4 was the start of the downfall that resulted in 6, and they're using this new rebooted remake timeline to correct that. Whether they'll actually correct it or just frick it up with future installments is entirely up for debate.
I'm fine with this, as long as they replace the stupid gunner ganados and Michael Bay action segments with something more feral or terrifying. SASPK. The only good parts of the Island were the interior lab segments anyway.

RE8 DLC comes out next week, very excited for that. I have very low expectations for RE4 remake though. Without any gameplay footage or story details I've got no idea if it's going to be an RE2 or an RE3.
If it's anything like the two major RE7 DLC, it'll probably only be about 2-3 hours long. I'm hoping for a lot more obviously, but I'll take what I get considering I'm probably going to end up spending more time on Mercenaries.

RE4 absolutely does not have any sort of best shooter mechanics. Its controls were compromised by the gamecube controller being unable to support twin-stick control. That's why the game has a modifier key to change movement input to aim input instead of one analog stick for moving and strafing and the other for pan and pitch. RE5 was not made for the GC, and so it has actual twin stick shooter controls. People need to stop pretending that "tank controls" were ever a design decision. They have never been, for any game. Tank controls have only ever existed because of there having been no choice but to implement them (Resident Evil), or because of developer incompetence (Croc).
You could already have those kinds of controls on the N64 with the C buttons, and the Gamecube C-stick is nothing else than a second stick. XIII worked that way, for example.
So no, the control scheme of 4 was certainly NOT due to the controller's (in)abilities.

RE5 can only be controlled with stick for movement and defaults with strafe mechanics. You have to go into the settings to make it control exactly like RE4 and even then you are still forced to do what is supposed to be digital based movement with an analogue stick.

It really is. Like I said I dont think RE8 slower controls are designed for an action game. Reloading takes too much time, enemies are too fast and their attack animation lasts too much, not to mention sponge bullets.

I just explained to you. It can't possibly be gameplay because P.T has no gameplay. Outsourcing the act of finding the exact inputs to trigger the next iteration of level repeats to 200,000 people can only either not be game desing, or to be fundamentally wrong and broken game design, that neither of those would be used as inspiration by any self-respecting game designer. I'm going to repeat myself. All aspects of RE7's gameplay are Resident Evil gameplay. The level structure, the act structure, level themes, resource distribution, weapon types, camera perspective, puzzle design, even unskippable cutscenes are all game design from previous Resident Evil games. So whatever Masachika meant, had to not be gameplay.

Not necessarily. If he didn't specify what it was, it could have been anything. I don't remember the audio aspect of P.T for example. P.T may not be a game but it does have sound and some visuals. Still, claiming P.T as an inspiration for RE7 feels like claiming a McDonald's billboard as an inspiration for the movie Falling Down. Or a person named River as an inspiration to Apocalypse Now.

4 was great but I never liked the over the top monsters or the fact the enemies weren't really zombies. Otherwise it was a fantastic game. Still could have been better.

RE from 2006-2016 is just a decade that can and should be forgotten.
It has the same gameplay as og re1 but it is vastly different; the areas are redone, new enemies and mechanics, different progression (to an extent), and the devs fricking with you by playing on your expectations (the funnest part). You will recognize a lot of the rooms, puzzles and what not, but like 70% of it has been reworked or is new. RE2 and 3 aren't even remakes. Totally different, very modernized, standardized and streamlined. I don't consider them remakes (and neither so the devs) and don't really have a desire to play them after my first run through.
My order was all over the place and sporadic over time, and I don't think it matters too much. 4 to 7 are barely connected to each other or the original trilogy.
My highlights are the first 2 remakes, og 2, and 4. For the old-school ones I prefer keyboard controls, having a finger for each turning direction is way more responsive and intuitive for me.
6 is the one stinker in the main line, 5 is decent in coop.
I played the REmake last year, the Jill story, and I absolutely loved it, but I found myself often restarting from different points because I would either run out of health or ammo, that I just started running away/speerunning everything that I felt like I didn't get a grasp of the story or much of the lore. Didn't bother to try Chris side because I heard there is even less resources and you have to escort Rebecca, so I'm wondering how much of the rest of the series compare? Because I really want to get into it, especially the earlier games.
Start on the easy difficulty and work your way up.
By the time you have cleared a game the first time you will already have a huge edge for the next time, which directly translates to the harder difficulties.
There is no shame in starting out easy, as survival horror games in general have insane replayability.
And if you're not some legit 89IQ moron, you will never run out of anything.
The hard ones are the outliers. Most are quite easy and manageable on the 1st play/normal difficulty. When they're hard though, it's fricking brutal. Code Veronica and 0 are the only ones I can say to be be particularly infuriating.
Play the sourcenext ports, they're ridiculously easy. If you don't have those, play on easy and you will be guaranteed more than enough ammo and health for re1 and 2 regardless of version. Only exception would be re1 ps1 long box, but it would be hard to mistake that and the iso isnt very common. Avoid any difficulty called Arranged or Advanced. You'll do fine anon. I recommend avoid looking things up, but asking us if you start getting overly frustrated.have fun! I wish I could play them again for the first tiem

I'm expecting it to go completely off the rails midway through the castle section and become something entirely different from the original as far as plot, locations and some enemies go.
Capcom knows RE4 was the start of the downfall that resulted in 6, and they're using this new rebooted remake timeline to correct that. Whether they'll actually correct it or just frick it up with future installments is entirely up for debate.

RE4 absolutely does not have any sort of best shooter mechanics. Its controls were compromised by the gamecube controller being unable to support twin-stick control. That's why the game has a modifier key to change movement input to aim input instead of one analog stick for moving and strafing and the other for pan and pitch. RE5 was not made for the GC, and so it has actual twin stick shooter controls. People need to stop pretending that "tank controls" were ever a design decision. They have never been, for any game. Tank controls have only ever existed because of there having been no choice but to implement them (Resident Evil), or because of developer incompetence (Croc).
You could already have those kinds of controls on the N64 with the C buttons, and the Gamecube C-stick is nothing else than a second stick. XIII worked that way, for example.
So no, the control scheme of 4 was certainly NOT due to the controller's (in)abilities.

It really is. Like I said I dont think RE8 slower controls are designed for an action game. Reloading takes too much time, enemies are too fast and their attack animation lasts too much, not to mention sponge bullets.

Well surely not "gameplay" since P.T doesn't have game design. RE7 has properly implemented feedback mechanisms that convey information about possible interactions to the player. It isn't a rain dance where arbitrary input reveals consecutive iterations of near-identical explorations of the same interior mesh. Every aspect of Resident Evil 7's gameplay comes from Resident Evil games. That's the one thing it was praised for by fans of the franchise, in contrast with the previous game, RE6.

I just explained to you. It can't possibly be gameplay because P.T has no gameplay. Outsourcing the act of finding the exact inputs to trigger the next iteration of level repeats to 200,000 people can only either not be game desing, or to be fundamentally wrong and broken game design, that neither of those would be used as inspiration by any self-respecting game designer. I'm going to repeat myself. All aspects of RE7's gameplay are Resident Evil gameplay. The level structure, the act structure, level themes, resource distribution, weapon types, camera perspective, puzzle design, even unskippable cutscenes are all game design from previous Resident Evil games. So whatever Masachika meant, had to not be gameplay.

Not necessarily. If he didn't specify what it was, it could have been anything. I don't remember the audio aspect of P.T for example. P.T may not be a game but it does have sound and some visuals. Still, claiming P.T as an inspiration for RE7 feels like claiming a McDonald's billboard as an inspiration for the movie Falling Down. Or a person named River as an inspiration to Apocalypse Now.

Maybe that says something about how sterile and homogenous the industry has become when everything looks, feels, plays and sounds the same. Thinking about getting into this series, what games should I prioritize playing?
1, 2 and 3. The PS1 versions, not the remakes.
Alright that's what I was thinking, but isn't REmake basically the same game but more refined? I know a lot of people rec that version instead
It has the same gameplay as og re1 but it is vastly different; the areas are redone, new enemies and mechanics, different progression (to an extent), and the devs fricking with you by playing on your expectations (the funnest part). You will recognize a lot of the rooms, puzzles and what not, but like 70% of it has been reworked or is new. RE2 and 3 aren't even remakes. Totally different, very modernized, standardized and streamlined. I don't consider them remakes (and neither so the devs) and don't really have a desire to play them after my first run through.
My order was all over the place and sporadic over time, and I don't think it matters too much. 4 to 7 are barely connected to each other or the original trilogy.
My highlights are the first 2 remakes, og 2, and 4. For the old-school ones I prefer keyboard controls, having a finger for each turning direction is way more responsive and intuitive for me.
6 is the one stinker in the main line, 5 is decent in coop.

Is the Resident Evil series hard?
I played the REmake last year, the Jill story, and I absolutely loved it, but I found myself often restarting from different points because I would either run out of health or ammo, that I just started running away/speerunning everything that I felt like I didn't get a grasp of the story or much of the lore. Didn't bother to try Chris side because I heard there is even less resources and you have to escort Rebecca, so I'm wondering how much of the rest of the series compare? Because I really want to get into it, especially the earlier games.
It's hard on the harder difficulties
Start on the easy difficulty and work your way up.
By the time you have cleared a game the first time you will already have a huge edge for the next time, which directly translates to the harder difficulties.
There is no shame in starting out easy, as survival horror games in general have insane replayability.
And if you're not some legit 89IQ moron, you will never run out of anything.
The hard ones are the outliers. Most are quite easy and manageable on the 1st play/normal difficulty. When they're hard though, it's fricking brutal. Code Veronica and 0 are the only ones I can say to be be particularly infuriating.
Play the sourcenext ports, they're ridiculously easy. If you don't have those, play on easy and you will be guaranteed more than enough ammo and health for re1 and 2 regardless of version. Only exception would be re1 ps1 long box, but it would be hard to mistake that and the iso isnt very common. Avoid any difficulty called Arranged or Advanced. You'll do fine anon. I recommend avoid looking things up, but asking us if you start getting overly frustrated.have fun! I wish I could play them again for the first tiem
Avoid fights when possible and clear out most crucial paths, and you should be peachy. Og RE2 is pretty easy, and RE4 has no ammo shortage at all.
