RE2 is like the only game with scary zombies and a lot of it is that shit like this can happen. This is a cherrypicked example with the single tankiest zombie in the game, but having varying enemy health and inconsistent kills definitely helps make a slow, bumbling enemy like this genuinely intimidating

        >It's how the game should've been.
absolutely not, pistols are this shit irl and you don't get comical head explosions. A pistol to the brain stops a sentient creature, but zombies aren't, or their shit works differently. You also don't kill a single zombie with a headshot in a cutscene, you only kill a dog, and it takes 3 handgun shots, like in game.

what do you think of this?

        >all these damage controlling replies
I dont care if its "le scripted" its fricking annoying and lot of regular zombies have this bullshit of tanking a full clip of bullets.

You can just leave, or kill him with one point blank shotgun blast. This is the only zombie in the game with hp this high, and it's meant to frick you, but you can always run past before he gets up even in HC mode.

            >Did you forgot the classic "get down!" headshot? Shame.
It's not a headshot kill, like Marvin's gate crash, in fact that zombie isn't on the ground in the scene, it's likely it got back up. It's animation of falling over is not unlike the original's cutscene, but it's exactly like the normal mode headshot "death".

It makes sense. Not every person who gets zombified is expected to have the exact same resistance:
        >They could be different cops, with different body builds and different ages
        >They could be normal civvies, some lean, some well built
        >They are in distinct levels of decomposition, depending on how recently they got infected
        >Some might've been wounded by other means (fire, trauma, preexisting condition) before getting bitten and infected

It adds to the 'survival horror' factor and only speedrunning autists would be mad at this.

REmake 3 has a lot of potential, but fumbles with the actual content: in contrast of RE2 which the remake has more content than the original, for RE3 the original has more areas to explore and battle through.

They just needed to add some extra areas (including the infamous clocktower and more street stalking) and the game would've turned out perfect.

Enjoyable, but at the same time it's clear it was dumbed down for moronic drug-using subhumans who comprise the customer base in the dark year 202X. Still I didn't regret buying it from a sale, and I would have been happy if RE3make was the same level (it wasn't).

It proved that old school survival horror mechanics like inventory management and route planning can gel with modern shooting and don't need to be dumped in the trash for a linear re4 style level progression. It also proved that the mass audience actually enjoys these mechanics detached from 5th gen era 3d control schemes, for that it has my respect. nu Mr. X is ultimately questionable in gameplay terms but he was an example of something genuine being added to the original formula and the team not purely coasting off of and watering down ideas. the positives out of the way, it's somewhat sloppy and has very uneven presentation, the hackjob done to the original A/B scenarios was inevitable to some degree with modern dev constraints but even in that context they come off as lazy in execution. the cargo elevator, one of the best horror scenes in the original was utterly wasted.

Japanese publishers/developers go purely on trends (where the money is made) when catering to Western audiences, which is why RE3 was greenlit so quickly afterwards using rehashed assets and why Konami has followed suit with SH remakes. Another example is the latter developer pretty much gutting Winning Eleven/PES of all its modes and focusing soley on "MyClub", because that is where both them and EA (Ultimate Team) make their money.

It was always a solid 7/10. It wasn't bad but it certainly wasn't "masterpiece!". I think people just wanted Resident Evil to succeed, especially because 7 did a good job at reviving the series, at least for its gameplay. And I am not saying that 7 was great or anything, only that it certainly felt far more like an RE game than 6 did. The game had too much cursing, sort of like Cyberpunk. Cursing is always bad, but RE2 and Cyberpunk went full zoomer with it.

I'm trying to play the original but it's giving me a bit of a rough time, Is the knife supposed to not kill zombies?, My only other experience with RE was 4 which I've heard is much MUCH easier

      Anonymous

      >Is the knife supposed to not kill zombies
for the average player the knife is just a means to save pistol ammo in the early game, you get a zombie down and then finish them on the ground with the knife. It's a pretty superflous weapon through most of the game.

      >4 is much easier
4 is more straightforward but I wouldn't call it easier, the early re games are not very hard outside of wonky bossbattles and a few obscure puzzles in the first game.

        Anonymous

Ah I see, I just kinda used the pistol while figuring out the controls, so all my ammo got used up and I got swarmed by zombies with just my knife, I did learn how to equip my knife early on, but I wish it had a dedicated button like 4

      Anonymous

correct, the knife only exists so you can still technically play the game if you have zero ammo. it's strength varies by game, with the OG RE2 knife being the weakest by every metric and being even less of a viable option. my strat is to knock them down by other means and then stand alongside them and slash, that gives you the most hits. also, based purely on experience, the leg slash has the most range and the head slash does more damage and is slightly more likely to stagger/knock down. it is possible to knife every boss in the game, including Big Gator, but you will never hit a big enemy like a Licker etc with the knife so don't bother.

I've just completed 2 and 3 on hardcore.

2 is truly an excellent remake but it also had great design to stand on. I replayed it 3 times in a row. It's beautifully balanced, and my first run felt like a true survival horror. You can argue it still loses stuff compared to the original or failed to elevate the scenario differences, how it suffers from the same issues as the original like losing steam in the sewers/lab, but it's clearly the result of a lot of work and passion and understanding of what made RE cool.

3 was a clusterfrick. Highlights how subpar of the original's less intricate/interconnected design already was but also doubles down on the linearity, and mechanically it's filled with small stuff that pissed me off. It all feels so off, cheap and rushed. I played it once and uninstalled immediately after.

They really need to realize that the original multilayered mansion structure with route planning, item management, scarce resources and saves is so much better than series of scripted linear smaller segments.

It's not perfect by any means but I think it's about as good as a modern remake could have been. It's one of the scariest modern games released, certainly the only scary horror game since it came out 4 years ago.

I was pissed when they revealed they weren't doing pre-rendered backgrounds, but the final product was a great horror game if you play on hardcore
The only big frick up was not having the campaigns overlap. The original gave you four unique scenarios because of the zapping system.

It was great overall. The parts of Raccoon City that we got to see looked more like an American city instead of a weird Japanese caricature of one. RPD is still solid. The sewers got upgraded. The lab could've looked more dilapidated but it was still fine; it could've used more lickers.
Ada's section was bad but Sherry's was pretty good. Her magic hacking gun was too wacky for the tone of the remake.
It could've used more enemy variety. There weren't many crows in the original but there are several places where they'd make sense in the remake. I wanted to see giant moth replaced with an actual boss fight I always felt it was too cute to kill or cripple. Changing Adult G from a boss to a regular enemy that replaced the giant spiders felt like the right decision but I feel like we missed out with the spiders not making the cut in some form.
The B routes were shallow and tacked on. They needed way more polish
Ghost survivors was a legitimately fun addition

RE2R is ok, IMO, much better than the original.
    RE3R on the other hand:
    There's nothing salvageable there.
Jill is uglier than the OG one, you have to play more as Carlos who is now a brown Black person, it's 3h long and linear, and they cut down 40% of the game.
Plus Nemesis sucks. Nowhere near the tension he gave in the original game.
And RE3 was my favorite among the classics so imagine my disappointment.
I can't believe they decided to scrap RE3 funding and dev for that piece of shit multiplayer. What a dick move from Capcom.
And now they're already jumping onto RE4 Remake instead of remaking CV...

      >I can't believe they decided to scrap RE3 funding and dev for that piece of shit multiplayer.
I can't believe people still use resistance as a scapegoat for 3make being shit when it's been known for years that it wasn't even made by the same team, and was nothing was nothing but an asset flip that couldn't have taken much "funding" anyways.

        Anonymous

Yes uh, sorry but didn't they bundle both games on a blu-ray disc? What other reason do you offer for explaining that piece of a mess that RE3R is?
The only other theory I've seen around is that RE3 was "supposed to be a DLC" for RE2 and they decided to semi-do-a-full-game instead.
That Resistance was being developped by another team doesn't change the fact that funding went into that shit that could've been used for more RE3 instead.
They know they cut RE3 down. Whether that was because of time or money constraints doesn't change anything. They decided to sacrifice RE3 Remake for naught.

the little freeroam town section at the start was alright, the bug sequence and the flamethrower nemmy boss were decent setpieces. the game becomes completely iredeemable when nemesis turns into a dog and they skip the clocktower completely.

      Anonymous

      >There's nothing salvageable there.
There's plenty. The issue is the city is the worst part of the game and Nemesis sucks in it. The bossfights and everything past the clocktower fight is great.
      >Jill is uglier than the OG one,
She's only marginally uglier than Voth who was a dime easy
      >you have to play more as Carlos who is now a brown Black person
He was always South American, they just leaned harder into his ethnicity, and he's easily the best part of the game in both sections.
      >it's 3h long
      The original was short but
      >and linear they cut down 40% of the game.
this is what hurts more, we got an extended hospital, rpd, and abetter endgame lab, but the entire first half is significantly worse and we lost the park/newsroom/gas station, and a meaningful Nemesis.
      >I can't believe they decided to scrap RE3 funding and dev for that piece of shit multiplayer. What a dick move from Capcom.
Yeah, fan reaction was "why did you make this instead of outbreak or making RE3 better?
      >And now they're already jumping onto RE4 Remake instead of remaking CV...
Yeah, but they scrapped the old team and brought in the A listers from RE2re, re7 and the like. They also publicly shitcanned the RE1 and CV re re makes, so it's likely they're next. They aren't in a hurry to remake RE5.

Mercenaries mode could have been okay, except the context melee moves aren't in and they were a big part of why mercs was so good in 4&5. Maybe more points/multiplier for dismemberment could have worked.
    A/B scenarios were shit
    Bosses were shit

its great but still could use improvements. like boarding up the windows in the a scenario would prevent zombies from spawning in. and also implement some of the scrapped ideas from old RE2 like the body armor, exploring the streets more (im fine without the spiders, they are not scary in the original) I understand why they didnt put some of the scrapped ideas back in, cause they used it in Outbreak and other Resident Evils, but I wish that they put more.

and also I want fricking skippable Sherry and Ada sections, they stop the pace to a fricking crawl really bad.

I'm fine with action because that seems to be the natural progression of the story. We were all looking forward to Chris flying a harrier jet right into Umbrella HQ and 6 at least got me excited for that level of epic. But it sucked and the story went nowhere and it was linear and co-op was the worst idea for RE. 7 was refreshing because it felt like Resident Evil was actually back.

    My personal ranking
    Top tier:
RE5 (no mercy Mercenaries mode is a fricking blast, aggressive AI with 3 Executioners hunting your ass is nerve-wracking fun)
    Great tier:
RE2 Remake (I completed it so many times, I can no damage no save it both scenarios)

REV2 (raid mode with online is fun)
    Good tier:
    Outbreak 1 and 2
Gun Survivor 1, 2 and 4 (having a Guncon makes this really enjoyable
    RE3 Original
    Ok tier:
RE1 Remake (the fricking door animations!! fricking frickity frick!)
    RE2 Original
    RE1
    Bad tier:
CV(stretches for far too long and the start of the moronation)
    Zero(fricking hookshot)
4(fricking far too long with too many setpieces)
    Unplayable for me tier:

one eye is slightly larger than the other. it messes with my depth perception. so I'm fine with playing 3rd person games, but with FPS, it has to be with a very specific DOF and FOV so that I can tolerate it for a few hours.

Hunk is mr.death, his entire team normally gets killed but him. In japan 4 is unlucky because their word for 4 looks like death, or "shi" I think. He's intentionally the 4th because it's thematic.

I played it last month, wasn't impressed. visually it looks good but I didn't have fun playing it. didn't like the gunplay mostly but there are also whole sections in the game that are downright not fun to play (frickin sewers). also the B scenarios were botched.

There's some depth to the gameplay you might not get until your 3rd or 4th run, also if you started as Claire you will be hurting.
        >b scenarios were botched
it's alright in the sense that we got a full b scenario, but you're right. We should've gotten a few more alternative cut-scenes and a true b scenario where puzzles are drastically different or already open.

I never said RE4 was bad. Just that it turned a horror game franchise into action and meme schlock 8albeit one that we all love). I was really hoping the horror would stay during ethan's story, but no, they immediately went back to nonsensical action

I don't agree, it got schlocky but it still felt like horror to me. Unlike RE4 which despite it's fun falls apart at the seams starting with the castle. Supposedly they're remaking RE4 with the opening village tone in mind, so fingers crossed we get the whole game with a cohesive theme and recontextualized shit so the lava room and giant robot baby are less moronic.

      >Make an amazing return to survival horror focusing on atmosphere and tight spaces
really when? I must have missed it after theyvreleased moronic rednecks: the game and baited people with the tall b***h

Lol. I'd rather die than play hide and seek with Resi 7 meme bosses. You're also confusing Resi with Silent Hill now.

    >A lot of replies but no one really explaining why having bullet sponge enemies in the game that popularized the mantra "shoot them in the head" is good design?
Because they're not bullet sponge enemies, you just suck at the game. On normal you can reliably oneshot most zombies with concentration, on hc you can just use the shotgun.

That one zombie seems to be a legitimate oversight by the devs, it is the only zombie like that

Having one zombie that's much tougher than normal isn't anything new for the series. RE1 Director's Cut had the kitchen zombie, RE2 had Brad, I forget if 3 had one, and CV had the doctor zombie.

IIRC it was early on and was significantly broken for where it was. Same skin as other zombies, just waaay higher HP

I hate Mr Meme and unkillable stalker types. Literally ruined Re2R for me.
