OP is most probably talking about flashcarts. I've had multiple cases where i tried to fire up a fan translation or something into the console with one of these and it simply did not work. Shit really does suck
I've seen multiple instances of those translation patches being patched themselves to work on hardware. Pretty sure even Baroque got that treatment. Or SMT did. I don't remember, but it was a recent one.

I've run into some modern patches that won't work on "official" emulators (i.e. SNES classic and Wii/Wii U/3DS Virtual Console injects) because the hackers expanded the rom too big. Works fine on flashcarts, though.

Simcity 2000 Network Edition. One guy patched the game to get it working again over a decade ago but it bumped the OS requirement from 95 to XP SP2 because it changed how it dealt with inter-process communication, I think.

There's also Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow for the PC, which only ran on a certain handful of Nvidia/ATi GPUs from the era or some sections of the game were virtually impossible to beat. dgVoodoo 2.x fixes it by emulating some of those cards but you need a PC running Windows 7 or later and a d3d11+ GPU that's powerful enough to emulate that card at near native speed.
I should also add that the patched SC2KNE wouldn't be able to communicate with other unpatched clients. If you wanted to throw an old school LAN party and some poor sap showed up with their Win95/98 retro rig they'd be SOL.
Not a fan patch, but one of the last things Bungie did before they totally divorced themselves from the Halo franchise was update Halo:PC so that it no longer relied on Gamespy's defunct services for the in-game server browser. The game was compatible with Windows 98SE at release and could run on that system up until version 1.09, I think. Their last patch causes the game to fail to launch and complain about a few missing libraries that only work on XP and later versions of Windows.
The GoG version of VtMB has fan patches included by default and the game doesn't work on my Vista laptop, where as the original iso of the game, once installed, does. Rise of Nations off Steam also doesn't work for me, it just doesn't start when I click the exe, but the iso version is fine. Oddly enough, Age of Empires II HD is perfectly fine.
Name one example, because outside of SMW romhacks that are only playable in ZSNES, I can't think of any situation in which that is a bad thing. Are you seriously complaining that someone made a DOS game playable in recent Windows?
Yeah, OP is smoking crack. I couldn't get some SMW ROM hacks to work on an FX PAK PRO. Big whoop, just use an emulator. Other than that, I never heard of a fan translation not working on original hardware.
I recently found a program called Xidi that improves support for xinput controllers in old games. But the creator only builds for windows 10 and 11.
Thankfully it compiled just fine in visual studio 2019, but frick this shit will only get worse.

IMO it's way faster to set up than Xinput plus.
You drop in one .dll file into the game's directory and it will act like a ps2-style directinput controller. And if you want you can create a .ini file to remap the buttons and even simulate keyboard presses.
It's missing a few features though, like adjusting the analog stick deadzones and you can't simulate the mouse. But maybe that will be added one day.

why would i need more than 4gb of ram to play old games? thats a limitation of the hardware not the OS. a 32bit cpu can only address 4gb of ram. windows 11 is botnet spyware trash. my newest pc is 10 years old and still runs windows 7 which is bad enough. microsoft can frick off with their always online shit and "features" nobody wants

I was thinking about Homeworld whose remaster was done based on 2 and not the original. Same thing with the Marathon Trilogy, where Bungie released the source code for 2, later for Infinity and finally the assets for all three games, but the only way to play 1 for a while was with the Aleph One project using 2's engine.
There's also the Starcraft disk someone found. I still believe that was just a publicity stunt, though.
