I found a secret boss in an unmarked cave in a region that I got a 100% in and he's shooting out blood waves at me and I only gave it three attempts, but I'm heading to sleep so I'll hopefully beat it tomorrow. Im 10 hours in (counting idle time and multiple tries with a couple of enemies) Twilight difficulty all the way, Im level 10 and Im on my way to Maita Castle to speak with Igashichi. Game's fun, combat is getting some time to click in but Im making progress, open world is empty but has some decent scenary, and gives you excuses to kill nips and yankees with fugitives and "public order" stuff, its nice, reminds me of a PS2 game in a good way. cats are a nice alternative to the mandatory cute creature in their games, but the clipping and overall horrible engine ruins the wholesome moments. Also, I dont like the requirements for unlocking styles with weapons, theres no way around some weapons only having 1 style till you progress further in the story

Not Nioh 2, but better than Wo Long. Open world feels like a PS2 game, for better or worse, I read there's minigames but I've only played the shooting range one, so thats nice, side activities are simple and straightforward, like collecting cats, otherwise its just a bunch of excuses to fight different enemies. Combat is fun, even if unlocking styles means some weapons will remain with 1 style until you make progress in the story

        Anonymous

What do you mean by PS2 game for the open world aspect? As in it's just empty?
Also I loved Nioh 2 and liked Wo Long despite it's flaws so if it's in between I think I'll be satisfied with it.

NTA, but the open world is very standard 2012 style stuff, theres bandit camps and mini bosses to hunt down, alongside some shitty shooting/gliding challenges. It works well because the combats fun.

I suggested more european elements to Nioh 3 since we already played through the Sengoku period (and Ronin covers the Bakumatsu), but the lore of the game suggests theres amrita in other parts of the world (at least europe), but I was on the fence because of the stances/styles, which is a thing in asian swordplay. But since Ronin has the "British training" style, it might be doable after all

      Anonymous

Years ago they mentioned wanting to do a three kingdoms game (wo long), a bakumatsu game (ronin) and a celtic game which will probably be nioh 3. Although the celtic game could be a entirely new IP and then nioh 3 takes place before 2.

Shinobi styles have disadvantage against any other style as far as the slight damage dealt/taken goes, but your Counterspark is always at max effectiveness as though you have advantage against any other style. It's about making the most of those situations with the extended combos and pressure it offers you.

bro they have been using the same animations since their first fricking game, nioh 1. ive noticed the healing or death animation or ko animation for the bosses its the fricking same one they have been reusing over and over again, some moves i've also noticed are the exact same obviously the gameplay and feel are very similiar as well why is no one calling this shit out?

It's more like Wo Long but with more move complexity. The loot autism is a lot more simplified this time with less pointless stats.

      Anonymous

The RPG mechanics are severely downed down for the worse.

You get 4 stats this time around.
      >Strength
Affects primary attack damage and defense
      >Dexterity
Affects subweapon attack damage and general ki damage
      >Intellect
Affects how likely you build up status against enemy and how much you resist status effects
      >Charm
Affects "poise", luck, and ki recovery
The thing with these stats is that instead of investing skill points into an individual stat it's now done through skill trees. As in, the more skills you unlock in the skill tree the higher the number for that stat will increase which increases the effects of whatever that stat affects...it's weird and also really basic. You also get a ton of skill points really easily. I think last night after about 4 hours of play just trying to complete all the regions on the map I had 41 FOURTY ONE skill points to use but each stat also has it's own skill points, which are required kind of arbitrarily for certain skills and you get stat-specific skill points for completing related tasks or just outright buying items that give you that skill tree from specific vendors. Skill trees are kind of varied, it's a mix of actual useful and unique skills but most of it is just stat increases.

Equipment is ultra simplified. As far as I can tell, weapons do not scale with anything so their attack power only comes from the weapon level, your strength or dex stat, and any effects on the gear itself. There is also no weight system at all, so there's no consequence for armor choices. Effects seem really toned down i.e. attack up for only one specific weapon +1.1% or w/e. There's also a ton of bloat with the various effects like +X% weapon damage...at night. It's dumb. As far as effect fixing, there's a mechanic that lets you take one effect from an item to another except the 2nd item has to have an empty slot, assome equipment can roll with a blank slot. Maybe there's more in NG+ but I haven't heard anything.

There effectively is. When you beat the game you unlock a new difficulty and unlock some new features. You can enter into the open world in this new difficulty which will respawn fugitives and public order stuff and of course can replay missions, with it working in a similar manor to nioh/wo long where you complete x missions to progress through a bar that unlocks the next set of missions.

This is already prevalent regardless of weight systems. You can refashion at your base and it doesn't affect gear, your visual outfit persists when you change gear and there is generally more options i.e. under/outerwear, can equip stuff like belts and glasses as individual items, etc. A lot of the early game stuff is gonna be stuff like kimono's though, it takes awhile until you get a lot of different actual armor

The open world is outdated but it just feels like an older assassins creed minus most of the collectathon shit.
You have shrines to pray at, cats and treasure to do a bit of platforming to collect, photos and then everything else is just more combat.
Personally that's perfect, the combat's fun and the open world gives me more places to do it in.
re: your spoiler it's got 3 difficulty settings and you can outlevel content if you're really struggling (weapon damage is tied to the character level it drops at)

Kinda, I've been doing some level 8 mopping up know I'm level 13 with weapons of that level and fights were getting shorter. I could basically just attack an enemy and kill them with a combo or two. It's made me change the difficulty to max.

Reviewers are unironically too smooth brained to understand where the value of the game lies, and influencers might even go so far as having conflicts of interest going on, but that's just baseless assumptions. Journos see an open world game and think they're supposed to zone out doing all kinds of random shit while looking at the scenery, but this is a Team Ninja game in heart and soul, the open world is there to facilitate the high depth combat and give you means to approach it in different ways. And it doesn't even look bad either, it's just not like the best of the best in graphics, because again the gameplay is the focus.

If you enjoy TN games, you will enjoy this one, it draws from their best and polishes up a lot of prior concepts effectively on top of adding a whole new angle with what the world and choices do offer.

Okay so matching styles gives minimal difference when getting hit. It's roughly 3% less damage or more damage taken.

      Anonymous

Seems to be same story with damage dealt. The only point in switching styles is to get maximum enemy stun for parrying their attacks.

      Anonymous

Can you check how much damage and ki damage you take in shinobi style?

        Anonymous

Same as if you were in a negative style. Again, very little difference but being able to get full stagger against any parry makes it pretty useful if you don't want to learn multiple stances

          Anonymous

From my experience, not getting staggers on parries makes having a negative style brutal.

However, the in-game tutorial suggests that a perfectly timed parry will stagger any enemy, even in a negative style. I haven't seen that happen though.

Move around a lot, focus on the quickest enemies to take out if you can

      Anonymous

Use your ears and your knowledge of the enemies to understand when they want to attack you. Use your mobility and AoE attacks to keep them all at bay and make sure you can be in position to Counterspark which can panic them all at once. Use the grappling hook to close and create distance as well as take advantage of any small openings you see and throw barrels etc. for AoE, on top of your ranged weapons for quick kills. Focus on Ki damage as much as possible and try to make use of the iframes from Criticals.

What's the visual indicator for when an enemy is panicked and I should be using martial arts on them?

They have an actual cowering animation when it happens but their health/Ki bars also get a red outline. You can use (or not use) skills at any time whether they're panicked or not based on what's happening so make the most of what they're good for.

        Anonymous

maybe the indicator just isn't very visible to me; been trying to figure out when i should be using martial arts. do i do a few normal attacks after parrying, and then do the martial art, or just do one and do it? martial arts by themselves won't cause them to panic after parrying right?

          Anonymous

most martial arts have either i-frames or escapes, you should get used to spotting when they can be used

            Anonymous

sorry invincibility not iframes, like you can tank a hit with them without being interrupted

          Anonymous

Using skills comes down to what those skills do, not the game having a big sign saying "press this button now". It is exceptionally clear when the enemy is panicked because they'll have a huge recoil animation after the parry and what you make of it comes down to you, what attacks you have and what you want to do.

Don't waste your money, this gameplay is not some secret "only Nioh 2 players will truly understand its combat". It sucks. It feels like a 2d side scrolling brawler with lock on. The only way to manage your ki is to counterspark over and over when attacked.

You have one combo on square and typically only get 2-3 hits after countersparking a red attack. Normal attacks are trash, charge attacks are ok for getting in an interrupt, pokes are your main jabbing attacks for any weapon and that leaves martial arts. You have completely shit martial arts in the first 10 hours of the game.

Did you want to use the spear or polearm? Oh sorry sweetie, there are ZERO stances and martial skills in the early game for those weapons. There is probably some bandit you can look up online and ride out to on your horse, but he'll probably be high level.

One thing I really liked was the atmosphere. Never played a game in this late era setting. Visually very interesting.

Well frick. I can't decide which I should get lmao.
Combat is important to keep you engaged throughout the game but so is the emotional setting of actually feeling like a samurai.

you get more mileage out of Sushi if you like old chanbara stuff. I probably spent a third of my time in photo mode. It's good despite its flaws and is generally quite gorgeous for a console game; good sense of art direction.
Ronin, what I've played so far, already has much more interesting combat mechanics, and is quite nice to look at, but if you like Team Ninja games you'll probably like it. Not quite the same emphasis on making have that cinematic feel.

Ronin were mostly associated with bandits and disreputable sorts during the Edo period. Abolishing the Daimyo system was coupled with a law that prevented masterless Samurai from re-entering official service, starting-off a slow death for Ronin who no longer had masters after the end of Sengoku. By late Edo Ronin were once again allowed to have land, and lords allowed to adopt again, this reversal lowered the number of remaining Ronin a lot by reincorporating them into the feudal system. There was probably very few Ronin by the time of the events of the game. The word itself is an umbrella term for wanderers so whenever someone made reference to Ronin it doesn't necessarily mean masterless Samurai.

In the leadup to the Boshin War, there were a lot of voluntary ronin because they saw the shogunate as too pro-west. They saw the samurai as letting the downfall of the system happen, so they'd rather quit the system and uphold their traditional values on their own. In ended up with a lot of political violence and assassinations, particularly towards foreigners and pro-western officials and scholars.

You should have most weapon types by the time you do the 8th story mission. Increasing the bond in a zone just reveals spots on the area as the bond level increases, but you can find everything in a zone without doing that. Check the island on the top right of the coast of the first zone and the guy there gives you a bayonet style, which I would assume he would also give a bayonet as well? I didn't find a pistol until around the 9th mission, but I don't think it is entirely based off mission progress.

Yeah, once you get your first house you can change at any time and your transmogs are character-wide instead of transmogging the piece so that way when you get new gear you still have the look you chose. You can also change your twin's appearance after, too.

What's happening with Sony right now is pretty simple, I can explain in less than 5 bullet points.
        >DEI/general bloat is making their western first party go into the red, even with PC ports (hence cancelling games, pushing them back, layoffs, etc)
        >ESG is basically dead in Japan as well
If you're Team Ninja, Shift Up, etc.
        >The game's budget is moderate enough that an exclusivity deal could pretty cover all cost before you even ship the game (no overhead = CFO hapi)
        >Only needing to make one version streamlines development/QA (less crunch = devs hapi)
        It's been working for Nintendo.

            Anonymous

Japan joined the Entente in WWI to gain territory in China, whether it be German territory in China, or Chinese territory itself. After the war, Japan pushed for a racial equality provision to be put in the Treaty of Versailles and League of Nations, which got rejected. This pissed off Japan and the Western countries. Japan saw they were still being seen as inferior, and the West saw them as uppity and aggressive

They did do some stuff; they didn't actually have to enter the war despite having a treaty with Britain, but did so anyway. They pretty easily took out any German presence in Asia. They suppressed a mutiny in Singapore against Britain. I'm not an expert on it, but their navy apparently did do a decent amount in the Mediterranean

                Anonymous

interesting, I was always under the impression that they had some minimal involvement at far off places in the way but basically had little impact

I also remember the mutiny in singapore was because the indians there thought the British were going to make them fight India (they weren't)

          Anonymous

Not quite, the Shogunate was isolationist, but was forced by America and other European countries to open up trade, and sign unequal treaties. The Shogunate as portrayed in game planned on modernizing and developing more power, so as to renegotiate these unequal treaties. A lot of the anti-Shogunate forces are opposed to any kind of consorting with Western barbarians, but others are fine with it, but just don't like the Shogun. Ryoma Sakamoto genuinely did want a parliamentary government.

Ultimately, both sides end up with the same policy of modernizing and ending isolationism, its just one would be under the shogun and the other not. Japan continued to be a military oligarchy regardless.

          Anonymous

The Imperial side was the one that had an isolationist side since the faction appeared as a reaction to the Shogun opening up the country, but at the end both sides went full in on modernization.

It was mostly a matter of survival. The financial and intellectual elite of Japan were VERY aware of the Opium Wars and the West completely tearing China apart. They knew they'd be next unless the imperial powers in Europe started seeing Japan as "one of them".

It's one of the reasons why they were able to go from a feudal society to winning nobel prizes in so little time, fear is one hell of a motivator.

I'm only a few hours into Ronin and the story is slightly better than usual, though that might just be because of how interesting the time period is. I don't care for any characters yet besides Ryoma.
The writing is usually the worst part of Team Ninja's games. Their stories are boring with silent/borderline-silent protagonists.

Its weird because they already make you choose a voice for your character, if you already went that far and even added some lines between the twins, might as well have the MC talking like the rest of the characters
