Is this as bad as reviews say? Are we still in a swamp of mediocre Team Ninja games?

          Shitpost Explainer

"Having a blast" is an exaggerated generalisation of a reddit user posting that despite what is being said about the game, they are enjoying it. This is used by discord troons to imply that enjoying the game is actually a bad thing (because redditors do that) or that you aren't actually enjoying the game at all. This comes at the tail end of their months-long shitposting campaign about the game in bad faith, and doing everything possible to attribute any of the games failing to themselves, ala the tortanic, Cyberpunk etc.

Yup hopefully this will get a PC release soon. There's not a lot of these type of games where you can create a female character and have her wear traditional japanese kimono, geta and tabi.

You can get more and stock it, but you can only hold so much before restocking. However it seems to keep you a minimum on hand at all times, which you can increase with perks. So it's not quite like Nioh where once you fire all your musket balls you're out until you find more, even if you die.

I don't even understand the inventory for the basic potion (medicinal pills?)
It says I have 10/9999 but I only have 3 on death
          what's happening

            Anonymous

Basically you can stock up more than the basic amount (which starts at 3) but even if you die having used all the ones you have, you'll always have three. So when you die with zero it starts you back at 3 or whatever your cap is, and the same applies for bullets and arrows and shuriken. Basically it just makes it so you can't spam them but also incentivizes you to use them because they are basically infinite.

                Anonymous

I mistyped, I meant can't start with more than three. Or rather, your minimum respawn is three. So you can have ten (or whatever) but if you use all them up and have zero in storage, you'll revive with three.

                Anonymous

But I don't think I can spawn with 10 either (I know I can collect more while alive at least). So what is 10?
I'm probably just confusing myself somehow

                Anonymous

You might be. Simplest way I can put it:

I'm on the screen right now.
                Handgun Bullet
                No. Held 15/15
                No. Stored 32/9999

So after I rest I'll have 15. I can use 15 in combat but I'm out until I rest again. If I use all 15 + 32 and respawn I think it will start me with 12. If I don't collect any between using them all up and dying again, I'll always have 12. It's the same for rifle bullets. Right now I have about 40, and the "Max" I can hold is eight. However if I shoot everything I can and use them all up and rest, I'll have six shots every time.

                Anonymous

                >If I use all 15 + 32 and respawn I think it will start me with 12.
You lost me here. I thought you said you can only use 15, how do you use 15+32.
There's probably something super simple I'm missing.

                Anonymous

32 is the surplus inventory, but once you run out of that you still have the baseline amount that restores after death

      Anonymous

There's Nioh and Hayabusa stances. Supposedly there's a secret fight with not-william but he's wearing yasuke's armor for some fricking reason. You get Hayabusa-like armor but it's from this dude, who is a real life historical figure I guess. The Nioh style description names William but that's it. It's very arguable if this game is actually meant to connect to their other games or not since the game doesn't have an actual Hayabusa in it at least as far as I know, just alludes to the possibility of the dragon clan existing.

Yasuke atleast is recorded as fighting at honno-ji so it makes sense to include his set, irl william was a trade cuck until his last days.

"A black man whom the visitor [Valignano] sent to Nobunaga went to the house of Nobunaga's son after his death and was fighting for quite a long time, when a vassal of Akechi approached him and said, 'Do not be afraid, give me that sword', so he gave him the sword. The vassal asked Akechi what should be done with the black man, and he said, 'A black slave is an animal (bestial) and knows nothing, nor is he Japanese, so do not kill him, and place him in the custody at the cathedral of Padre in India."

Also dojo missions where you can fight against your buddies to get rewards and increase your bond

Revolvers are similar to shuriken. You can use them as damage dealers (there are ways to spec into it) but they are generally used as a way to slip in some damage during a combo; they also are used for finishers once you unlock and they do a lot of damage so it's often useful to save your shots for them.

That's an interesting perspective, but you're wrong. The difference is, Japan is willing to turn the "Cool shit" dial all the way the way to 11. They turn it up so high or becomes over the top and ridiculous, which results in something entertaining that doesn't take itself seriously. Marvel on the other hand plays it safe and tepid, and takes itself very seriously. It's not fun, it's trite shit.

Japan is also extremely safe. They can't break their convention of school settings, tropes like isekai and death game dominate their nerd media, they like their generic märchen fantasy worlds with nonsensical video game elements and it's not being creative when you do it the 10000th time. The modern japanese generation has an appalling lack of touch to their own culture, the average weeb on Ganker is more in touch with japanese tradition than the modern day japanese zoomer watching korean/american netflix shows and marvel movies while they grow in an ever westernizing society spending all their free time on social media exposed to the globohomosexual trends of today. Japanese video game industry is also a crippled giant, the few remanining unique studios they have like from and kojima-pro are only surviving because westerners buy their games. Their domestic market doesn't play pc/console games and the industry knows this so all they make is gachashit and a few big nintendo franchises that their domestic market religiously buys no matter how dogshit it is.

I think there is a lot of quality Japanese entertainment, but I have noticed that if you take a look at crunchy roll, you'll see that for every worth while anime there are 20 that are aiming at the common denominator. I guess the take away here is "Japanese entertainment is good" is too broad a statement.

Greatsword might unironically be one of the best/easiest. Granted, I haven't tried Odachi yet. GS does beefy damage when you charge it's attacks which are usually wide reaching and you can cancel them into counterspark at any point of course so it's very safe to play. The starting mumyo style also has a really good offensive counterspark for dealing massive ki damage on block.

Parry stagger is just when you parry the last hit of their combo or parry one of the red moves. They will stop attacking and be knocked back slightly; if you use your martial arts right after they get knocked back it will deal increased stamina (ki) damage.

Use it right after a parry stagger for increased ki damage.

but what's the point of stamina damage then if stabbing them with triangle resets their entire ki bar?

              Anonymous

There's plenty of martial arts you can weave in just on their own. Some will say in their description how they're extra effective against blocking, some can put your hitbox under or above some horizontal moves, some just have good mobility and range. If your martial arts just do more damage than normal hits then that's more damage output. You can get a few hits in before they recover from out of ki.

          Anonymous

When they're in the panic state your martial moves do more ki damage I think? Panic is when their bar is outlined in red.

Generic on paper but it's fine. Combat focused game so clearing out enemy camps isn't a bad thing and clearing the rest of stuff is easy and convenient. Only complaint is there are some places you can do mini-games i.e. horseback archery, glidying through targets on the glider, etc except they only have one route so once you complete it once there's no extra tracks or bump in difficulty or anything.

There are semi-random events that pop up though and some can get repetitive but then sometimes they'll do something special which takes you by surprise.

This game does, to some degree, there are a couple of guaranteed ways to get specific items and I don't know if some of these items drop normally (or at least, drop as early as you can get the guaranteed drop). The horseback archery guy is a unique NPC you can form a bond with and completing archery courses is a quick way to gain his favor and at the 3rd level he gives you a cool looking outfit that I haven't had before. You have a dojo where you can fight bosses over and over, some in "mock" combat where you're given wooden weapons and "real combat" which is pretty much just a complete replay of the mission you fought them in, being able to use any gear you have and reaching rank goals against that boss rewards you with their gear some of which I don't think you can acquire as early as you can fight them

Each area has a bond level and as you do random events or activities in the area it increases the level up to 3 times. Each level reveals more of the collectibles in the area, but you don't need to have them revealed to find them on your own. You should still explore, though, just incase as there may very rarely actually be hidden things in the area like secret boss fights.

yeah i don't understand how anybody can call this game generic when i think they handle the open world better than elden ring since you have a variety of tasks to do and how you can complete them and having an actual story with proper characters is always a benefit.

        Anonymous

        >i think they handle the open world better than elden ring since you have a variety of tasks to do
They put cats and shrine markers on your map, then you go directly to that location and hold R1 for a moment. Skill point acquired. The open world design fricking sucks.

However, the combat is kind of interesting. Not as good as Nioh 2 but maybe better than Wo Long. I'm still not sure. The biggest issue with the style system is that styles are "effective" against enemy types, so instead of swapping styles based on the moveset you want, you just equip the one that gives you damage scaling.

          Anonymous

It's better than Nioh 2 combat anon. It has all the depth but it has more weight to it, it's punchier. Quality combat doesn't all come down to deep mechanics, how it feels actually matters 2. Nioh 2 has elite combat but it's a little floaty, rotr has fixed that.

            Anonymous

I don't see how it has the same depth. Maybe I'm not getting something about how it should be played, but as I said, the fact that you get a damage bonus for being in the "correct" style and a damage penalty for being in the "incorrect" style actually restricts your movesets within any given fight. You have a strong attack (but no strong attack combo), a thrust, and a light attack combo. Then you have three martial arts. In Nioh you had more moves than that in a single stance, and you were incentivized to swap between three different stances in a fight. You also had the ki pulse, which is similar to the blade flash, except the ki pulse had other moves and abilities tied to it, like flux, flash attack, etc.

I don't see how RotR has comparable depth. It seems to me that you mostly want to stay aggressive with light attack combos, parry at the correct time, then hit them with a martial art when they're panicked. Very similar to Wo Long's pace.

              Anonymous

Eh the penalty really isn't that bad and you can still easily beat enemies/bosses with the wrong style. You can do some fun combos by mixing charge attacks with the advancing attack, and even throw in the counterspark strings that some styles have

              Anonymous

I think you've mostly got it figured out but there are also some interesting skills to engage with that are unlockable in the skill tree, firearms are also given more attention here.

As far as the stances go, I think I know why they did it the way they did, they wanted to force the user to engage with the system. They know a lot of casuals would just stick with the same 4 moves if you didn't have a tangible incentive to switch it up. It's not necessarily a positive or negative IMO the counter spark system makes up for it, in terms of keeping you engaged. I personally think if they were going for a broader audience they did the right thing, Nioh 2 was too much for that crowd.

No magic or ninjutsu skills. Shuriken and bombs requires a secondary weapon slot to be equipped. Nioh 2 let you customize your moveset etc. I like Rise of ronin a lot but I wouldnt say its combat its better than Nioh 2

              >Nioh 2 let you customize your moveset etc.
The mileage varied from weapon to weapon. Some had very little customization and choices while some had a good amount. In RotR you have stance customization, with each stance feeling a lot more unique than the majority of weapon stances in Nioh. There's also better weapon variety in this game, arguably.

Team Ninja games have always gotten a bit of a pass here. They tend to be mechanically deep and fun to play. There are people with thousands of hours in Nioh, so it makes sense.

DD2 was hyped up as the second coming of Christ and DD1 has a cult following on this board. So when DD2 failed to meet some basic expectations people (rightfully) shat on it. It's still a good game.

Ronin on the other hand came out of nowhere. Its advertising campaign was nonexistent and it's a PS5 exclusive, which is already a bottleneck even outside of Ganker. So people that bought it and played it, and actually post on Ganker, were the people that knew what they're getting out of this game. A sandbox TN game. So the reception is more positive.

From what I gathered Nioh1/2, Wo Long and Ronin are all made by separate teams. This is primarily an open world RPG but with a very solid combat foundation, unlike 99% of open world games.
It's misguided to compare it to previous TN games since it's a completely different genre/focus. I didn't agree with people comparing Wo Long to Nioh either but comparing Ronin to them is even sillier.

Anyway, it being open world I reckon future DLCs could be really expansive.

The character creator having fewer options was weird because you can see lots of reuse from Nioh, but it's like they just removed lots of small options. There are fewer accessories, less hair customization, lots of things seem to just be absent.

Ronin started developing at the same time as Nioh 2 IIRC.

There is no evidence of this moronic idea that team ninja has internal teams. The devs work on multiple games at once like every other koei tecmo studio,

You're wrong about the character creator.
In Base it has the stance option expanded upon and has an underwear type and being able to color it.
Face has 34 eyebrows over Nioh 2's 29. Eyebrows, eyes, mouth can be asymmetrical plus more eyeshapes by 3. Eye appearance, nose has more sliders. Teeth now has teeth types and not just paint.
There's more hair styles by 20 and bangs by 10, as well as combinations for the bases for returning Nioh 2 styles. Facial hair, included.
Makeup has more options, including being able to color your finger and toenails.
Nioh 2 does have more facial markings by a whopping 2 options and 3 more "voice options" even though it's just grunts.
All Nioh 2 has over it is an actual boob slider from -20 to 20 instead of 3 options and yokai form customization.
Accessories for your character are still in ROTR but in the form of its deeper transmog system over Nioh 2's.

I knew critics were shit, but damn, this game has really made me question what the frick the point of their existence even is

They'd really have me believe the likes of far cry or assassins creed or borderlands 3 is as good as this game? Why the frick do they even have jobs if they can't even tell what a good game is.

it depends on the game wo long and both nioh games got dlc but wild hearts didn't, so far i haven't heard anything about dlc for this game.

Usually they have a season pass with 3 dlcs where each one adds new story chapters and a new difficulty with higher rarities of gear by the 2nd and 3rd dlc and a new weapon type on the first two. Then the third dlc adds a 100+ for dungeon type of content. That's how it was for Nioh 1 and 2 at least. No idea about Wo Long or SoP.
They've added post-release patches independent of the dlcs that added extra challenge missions and a lot of quality of life changes, too. Nioh 1 even had PVP added at some point post-launch and I'm not sure if it was alongside a DLC or not, don't remember.

OK so I found out that you CAN'T have more than one romance bond/veiled vow at once since the other person will not talk to you until you break up with the other girl/boy first except taka since dies regardless if you banged her or not

You can still talk with the person you broke up with though, and still give them gifts/bond. And if you wanted to romance them again, you just have to break up with the person you're currently with.

It's insane how simple but endearing TN made these historical characters' questlines up. They're just simple fetch quests but the dialogue and script make it worthwhile.

Not to mention no one's butt ugly in the game, per usual by TN standards (unless they're supposed to be ugly, like a bad guy or something)

im here after finishing DD2 and i ended up fairly disappointed with it. The first 15 hours or so are pretty great but then the rest of the game just drags with almost no new content (compared to reused stuff from the first game and what you've already come across in 2) or anything worthwhile to find.

I think expectations for Ronin were 'might be good, might just be ok' whereas the expectations for DD2 ranged a lot higher and now that people are getting enough hours into it you're seeing the bitterness come out from people who found it lacking. I imagine the people who are disappointed in Ronin feel much less strongly about it.

There's 4 new stances for greatsword, dual blades, chinese sword and sabres, you gain the ability to access the smithy from your longhouse. The new rarity is a disappointment because there's no graces or anything. In general the loot in this game is a afterthought in comparison to their other stuff.

I pasted it because I thought it was funny. As for the interpretation of yasuke, it can be as much as samurai or slave as you want.

It's not really up to debate, we know for a fact he was trusted by nobunaga and was considered a samurai.

I really hate the way they went about the RPG systems in this games. It's literally to no one's benefit.
People that hate the rpg loot bullshit aren't gonna like it...because it still exists
People that like the rpg loot bullshit aren't gonna like it because it's severely neutered with no bite or anything of interesting. It's really baffling to me. Wo Long still has the best version imo, at least for a NG and it's so disappointing they didn't re-use it.

The only good part about the RPG systems is that it seems like you can't overlevel yourself or w/e so each map and story missions feel decently balanced. You're not gonna accidentally end up being too strong because you did too many open world activities or whatever

            Anonymous

Yeah it's baffling the replaced character set bonuses with shitty lite-graces, there's pretty much no build stuff in this game. Feels like they stripped it back late in dev. Agreed on wo long too first time i felt they nailed it in NG and the late cycle graces were really cool.

I think it's fun. You can play it like Ghost of Tsushima if you turn the difficulty down, or Nioh / DS if you turn the difficulty up. There's a lot of different stances, weapons, sub weapons, and you can use the grapple hook in the environment to either toss enemies or toss explosive barrels or other shit at them. The FPS isn't the best and neither is the resolution, but it's still a fun game. If you're a fan of Japanese history or even just samurai in general I think you'll like it.

NTA but yes. Loads of games have good combat. I expect something more if I'm going to buy a game.

Majority of games don't have "good" combat and that definitely includes the games you inclduded which are just fricking basic shooters except horizon technically (technically). You also likely have the assumption that the open world is overly massive when it's not.

open world shouldn't automatically mean bad. The game does a good job at selling the fantasy of a wandering ronin. It would make sense to be able to travel from town to town and have things to see and do as you go. I really don't understand what I can only presume to be a boomer's obsession with linear start-to-end mission structure. I'm 31, I grew up playing linear games. It's not like they are so much more special or spectacular compared to a open-world game. For every bad open world game that loses focus, I can point to a linear mission based game that had its own problems

NTA but yes. Loads of games have good combat. I expect something more if I'm going to buy a game.

Lads, it looks like Ninja Garden Master Collection, Wo Long, and Wild Hearts are all on sale on PS4/5. Are they all worth grabbing?

depends on what you want and what your history is with tn/action games

I've only played the Vita version of NG Sigma 1, as well as a handful of DoA games (2 and 5 mostly) before Nioh came out. Otherwise, only played Nioh 1 and 2 from nu-TN but I've been loving RotR.

As a proponent of Wild Hearts, no.
They dropped support immediately and the game is basically dead online. If it's real cheap it might be worth a run through by yourself but understand it's not going to be like Monster Hunter even though it's trying to be.

Is it anything like a quasi Toukiden 3? I don't really do online for MH anyway.

Definitely pick up the master collection then. Wo long is good but it's different

Does it restore the Xbox gore at all? My understanding is the Sigma games were toned down compared to Black and the original II on 360.

It's only sigma 2 that has nerfed gore but who gives a shit man if you're playing these games for gore then you're playing them for the wrong reasons. Sigma 2 was some weird one off thing. NG1 and especially NG3RE are still filled with it

Scored both this for just under $50 (guy didn't like the difficulty) and Stranger of Paradise for $25 off eBay
"Patient" gamers stay winning, I'm ready for Team Ninja kino once they arrive later this week

This game objectively has the best combat of all time, for an open world game. Obviously that was a low bar to clear, but it's true nonetheless. Taking Nioh 2 combat, adding Sekiro parrying and putting it into a big open world, it was a good idea. This is kino.

      Sekiro didn't invent parries

It also has probably the best integration of grappling hook i've seen in these games
It's so meaty, so powerful, you feel like a giant flinging some small shits around

Does the gameplay feel like Stranger of Paradise at all? I really like how the parry mechanic works in that game (you have a gauge that depletes as you hold parry stance; parrying drains the gauge; take gauge damage while it's empty and you poise break)

the parry is the traditional time it right or eat shit parry

No, it's more like Wo Long if you played that, where certain moves require perfect parry but the rest you can block like normal.

Red attacks aren't actually unblockable, I found but they do stun you and some enemies have red attacks that if parried, stuns them, but if you don't parry they'll do multiple hits after. There are still grabs which yo ucan't block, however

Interesting, thanks for the tip. Sounds like you still get punished pretty heavily for not parrying but it's good to know it's not a requirement.

If you counter spark and enemies counter spark, you both bounce off each other.
I forgot to download the clip I took and will upload it on the next Ronin thread.

Bayonets are fricking hilarious. Kind of surprised there's no ammo/reload mechanic. You really can just keep shooting people with only cost being stamina

Blade flash is a little weird in that it doesn't work lile a universal cancel like ki pulse in Nioh where once you do it, you're instantly back in "neutral" and can do whatever you want. Blade flash puts you into a little animation where you can't dodge or do basic attacks. However, martial skills and counterspark can cancel the animations and in those cases it's actually super smooth and allows you to pressure enemies really hard with the right sequencing.

Shuriken cancelling on the other hand does actually cancel your recover at the same time as blade flash but has much quicker recovery, allowing you to more quickly cancel the end of a move faster and immediately go into a dodge or block or attack or whatever.
