og risen is a real rags to riches rpg story
you can influence the world and you can be influenced by its multiple factions as well
like other anons said its a spiritual successor to gothic and it shows. its the first and the last good game in the series
risen 2 and 3 are failed sequels in that regard alone but theres more to it
risen 2 is alright, pretty mediocre but its there
risen 3 actually makes you lose everything but the economy is so screwed and its so littered with ui mess, multiple currencies, skill trees, inventory screens that its just a different game entirely
risen 3 is more sea dogs than gothic
if a sea dogs game got an inflated budget and a skeleton crew to make it... oh wait
pirates i guess
I played it again recently, it's a great game although it's not without its problems. Two things I hated were the combat and the last two chapters.
Combat against humanoid enemies sucks and gets noticeably worse once the Lizardmen start showing up. This is particularly egregious when you consider that combat is a core part of the game, and you'll spend a good portion of your time actively engaging in it unless you buy a bunch of scrolls or learn magic.
Chapters 4 and 5 are terrible compared to the rest of the game. Chapter 4 is just one giant fetch quest for a macguffin. Some dungeons are long, intricate, and full of traps and enemies, while others simply require you to go in and pick up the armor piece. The contrast is quite noticeable, it feels like they had ideas for the temples but then rushed some of them for some reason. Chapter 5 has to be one of the worst boss fights I've ever seen in a game. They hyped it up and ended up being such a disappointment.
Now, this isn't to say that the game sucks, but it definitely goes downhill after you finally find out what the Inquisitor is up to. The roleplaying just banishes and the final boss becomes a matter of trying and error.
It's the real Gothic 3
But there were only a handful of people still on board for Risen 1 that even understood what made Gothic good, which is why Risen 2 and 3 are abominations
I excitedly installed installed Risen 2 after finishing the 1st one and I was shocked by how bad the combat was. uninstalled after fighting the crabs at the beach.
it was horrible.
its good but only if you are already bored with gothic 1 & 2 to tears. its also piranha bytes last good game. tbh they should just pump out gothic 2 reskins forever
Risens first arc is excellent and pretty much on par with the best of Gothic 1 and 2.
Too bad they spend all their energy on that arc alone and the second half of the game is just you fighting lizards in caves again and again.
PIranha Bytes always have the issue that their games are kinda frontloaded but Risen is easily the game suffering the most from this issue.
The only other title that can compare is Elex 2 which also starts decent but the last 1-2 arcs are the worst shit PB has ever made. >kill 100 robots >kill 50 rats >kill another 50 robots >kill 80 aliens
I wanted this game to end so fucking badly. I am sure they got fucked by covid but this was inexcusable. That and the story around the kid kinda sucked.
its a copy of a greater game, Gothic
It's pretty much Gothic II after a few drinks (easier and prettier, but less coherent and doesn't stand up so well)
Being Gothic 2 without the actual Gothic 2's ass pacing.
Repopulating the world with lizards was cheap, though.
Because it was a better Gothic 3 than Gothic 3 ever was.
I dunno but whatever it is the sequel is missing it. couldn't get into 2 at all and never tried 3.
>whatever it is the sequel is missing it.
it was PC main platform in mind
it took the best elements of gothic 3 and 2.
It's pretty much the true gothic 4 the story actually fits gothic 3 Xardas/Adanos ending
incidentally the gothic 1 remake looks pretty sweet

Like Gothic but worse.

risen 2 and 3 are still good imo. better than Gothic 3, and the Arcanum games.
>Arcanum
arcania my bad

Great exploration, good pacing, fun itemization, cool factions and better than serviceable writing. Even the combat is fun.
Truly a classic. Elex is also a similar and equally great game.

Thread theme:
purely Gothic jank. way better than Gothic 3
It had a little animation for when you did simple things like cooking.
Peak immersion.
in PB games they include these little animations when all other games require tons of mods for that
Yeah it’s great
I remember Lena Headey voicing some characters
It breaks the mould of d&d RPGs and does a better job at being a clean non intrusive ui and clean game system.
reminder to play Archolos
those guys really should make their own studio and stomp current Piranha Bytes out of existence
