sad but as much as seeing those bums me out the game still looks exciting.

thought you guys hate walking sims

      it's a puzzle game.

Riven isn't that much harder. The only thing that people might not pick up on is things like the location and color of the fire marbles, the animal eye puzzles and the counting system. If you can figure out at least one of those, you'll generally luck into the solution of the other puzzles.

that's always something I'm wary of though. accidentally solving a puzzle without earning it and then getting stuck on the next puzzle because it presupposes that you actually figured out the previous one and didn't just wing it.

I feel bad for anyone that played it in VR on the Quest version rather than PC. That said, I'll be playing Riven in PC mode. The lack of real note-taking tools in VR made it complete ass to do puzzle solving in a sane manner.

The only tool you really need for most adventure games is screen capture to be honest.

And the game didn't even have that, or at least at the point I played it. It's had a few QoL updates since then apparently.

              Anonymous

Screen capture is built into SteamVR, it's like trigger plus system button. But the game also had an in-game version where you clicked trigger near your head.

                >But the game also had an in-game version where you clicked trigger near your head.
That was probably added post-launch then, since it wasn't there when I played. I prefer ingame options vs. having to frick with out-of-game overlays to see screenshots.

Wasn't Firmament made by a "B-team" of inexperienced developers?
That said, I'm not sure I fully trust Rand to make a good game, especially without Robyn working on the remake as well

Firmament was AI-generated slop, from voice overs, to written dialog, art assets, etc. They got in a ton of shit for it in addition to puzzles that were disconnected from their environment.

It's all about the ability to store clues in your brain(or piece of paper) and correlate them with objects in the game.

The original Myst really isn't that hard but Riven is on a whole other level.

Myst is pretty easy, I beat it as a teenager without any guidebooks.
Riven on the other hand is insanely difficult. Even though there are essentially only 2 puzzles in Riven and you could finish it in under a minute, piecing the clues together without a guide can take dozens of hours and most people won't even realize they're looking at a clue when it's starting them right in the face. But when you finally figure it out, you will understand how genius the game is and how no other puzzle game has ever even come close to it.

If it's as good as their Myst remake, it should be awesome.

you guys (as in Ganker in general) are have been hyping riven for a whole lot of time.
this shit better be a good puzzle game and not "90's point and click adventure games kinda shit where the clue doesn't make a lick of sense" kinda game.

i liked quern and obduction and those are spiritual successors i'm told.
how does it compare difficulty wise? myst was pretty easy.
also, the characters in myst were absolutely corny, i absolutely couldn't take the worldbuilding seriously with those 2 brothers.
does it get better or is all the good shit in the books (aka me skipping them)

            Anonymous

riven is straight up the best game in the series with completely logical puzzles.

The only two frick you moments i can remember was instead of going through a door you just had to click under it and another door had to be closed to see a lever both were unintuitive because of the rigid old point and click system

            Anonymous

It's very tame compared to modern pure logic puzzle games. it's mostly walking and finding interactions and understanding sequence to do things. the actual puzzles are mostly easy.
all their games are like this.

            Anonymous

It requires observation and patience. Almost every riven puzzle its tied to its islands, so pay attention to the environment and the clues it feeds to you. There are some purely logic based puzzles here and there, but the big ones are environmental based. Also, some puzzles tend to give you "extra" stuff, just to frick with your brain. For example in x puzzle you get 7 spheres to put them on a map, but only 4 of them are required.
Myst and Riven are hard games in general and they are best played as secondary games, but they are very rewarding experiences.
For me, Riven and Drowned god are the best games you can find in old school point n click puzzle genre

Also, they confirmed a random mode. So we will have altered solutions for some puzzles, so that we can experience it all again for the first time. I wonder if that will include things like the Rivenise counting system.

        Anonymous

        Yeah that's neat, I guess.
I'm generally pretty 'meh' about randomizers for adventure games. One of the best things about Myst and Riven is that the puzzles fit perfectly into the world and the way it works. Randomizing that kind of stuff generally doesn't make any logical sense in the context of the world.
I know that's not really the point of a randomizer but new, actual puzzles designed in-world are much more compelling to me.

It was the absolute best puzzle in video game history.
People tend to say it's the hardest puzzle ever, but if you took notes, then everything clicks into place.

Hoooo, this one reminds me something.
Each section represent an island, and you're supposed to mark the point of some stuff I'm missing.

      Each shape is different island.
You learn about the shapes from the smaller dome structures.
On one island there is this hologram room, showing you map of each island, with specific spot marked on each island
That spot marks the dome with the hint
Every island has a number and color
There are rooms where you rotate some symbols and some things happen, like some whale swims close or some light appear
This is a hint that number = color
Don't remember the rest, I played it 15 years ago.

        Anonymous

It was the holographic projector that filtered me, I guess my brain just wasn't able to connect that with the sphere locations for whatever reason.
Also there was one singular lever that I missed because you had to turn your view around in a specific spot to see it and I never did that so both of those things combined after trying to figure it out for months made me look up a hint guide. The rest was easy sailing though.

Outer Wilds was fairly popular although younger audiences don't know that it's adventure game, or even what an adventure game is. Even the game's developers didn't seem to be aware that they were basically making a Cyan game, they thought they were copying Zelda.
