She already killed herself but her soul moved into a ppupet version of her former teacher. Killing her soul would be nice but its impossible. The best thing you can do is "betray" her either by attempting to give her the Amber Starlight or attacking her at the end of her quest.

How, it doesn't fricking do anything. It takes a thousand years to send a dial-up message to its supposed messengers who haven't even talked to it since the Shattering began. The game literally begins with the narrator explaining that the GW fricked off after it saw how badly Marika messed everything up, I have no idea how certain subset of the community believes its some big bad overlord god other than an inability to comprehend a plot line more complex than the most shovelware JRPG imaginable. Even on a storytelling level having your big cosmic force deity actually just be completely indifferent once shit turns sour has way more interesting implications than a generic evil god

          Anonymous

          >the GW fricked off after it saw how badly Marika messed everything up
The GW enabled Marika to mess everything up in the first place. If Marika is the only way the GW exerts it's influence on the world, then opposing the GW and Marika is one and the same. And you don't even know if what made the GW was Marika messing everything up or just Marika trying to mess with *it* for the first time.

The Two Fingers are the emissaries of the GW. We know that the Two Fingers have for the most part fricked off in terms of guidance for the land. They only want for Tarnished to return to the status quo by becoming Elden Lord.

              Anonymous

I wouldn't say fricked off but more that they are literally making shit up since they don't know what's going on anymore, shown by how they think the GW sent the tarnished and how they were completely blindsided by the thorns

              Anonymous

The Two Fingers literally confess halfway through that they actually don't know what the GW wants or is trying to do. We don't even know if they were actually listening to the GW at all. Like this anon

I wouldn't call it a plot hole, we just don't know why she did what she did EXACTLY. We don't know what the Two Fingers are EXACTLY, what their influence over the Empyreans is EXACTLY, or how they are assigned to them. Or how Empyreans are chosen to begin with.
We can't even tell for sure if the Finger Readers actually understand what the frick those finger-shaped monstrosities are saying, or if they're making it up. Or what the Greater Will is, and what it wants... or if it "wants" anything.

Elden Ring explains quite a lot about the Shattering, we have a pretty decent idea of what happened after the Ring was destroyed. But what happened before is still extremely vague.

Dark Souls wasn't any different. "Gwyn, uh... cursed humanity." Okay, but what does it mean. "They were cursed with, uh... undeath." It took until the final DLC of the final game to finally explain what the frick happened EXACTLY.

said, we don't even know anything at all about the Fingers.

all the undead roaming the lands between is because they lost the guidance of grace due to the golden order malfunctioning which is Marikas fault
The deathroot issue is kinda her fault, but like 35% to be honest. The Black Knife assassins were already going to kill Godwyn she just 'joined' with them to use the rune of death to kill her body (thus also saving Godwyn's life in a manner of speaking)

When you kill blaidd (who before fighting you is going bonkers infront of a bunch of black knife corpses) and tell Iji about what happened, he says this:
"Unthinkable, how could Blaidd… How did he break free from his cell? No, more importantly… Blaidd became a curse that plagued Lady Ranni, yet in madness, gave himself to her. I’ve made a grave misjudgement. And I thought myself a capable war counselor… I’ll catch up with you soon enough, Blaidd. When I do, I only hope you’ll accept my apology."
If you have the reading comprehension skill of someone over the age of 6, you can infer that the black knives attacking blaidd and iji aren't sent by ranni, as it wouldn't be "giving himself" to her to defend himself against them. Additionally, YOUR quote, even if interpreted in the dumbass way did(that the betrayal means killing blaidd and iji) disproves your point because it says they both know they have to be killed to further her plans.

The "everything" in line 3 refers to the status-quo of the golden order, it's a betrayal in the sense that she aims to undermine the system people have lived under and benefited from for eons
Line 4 refers to the list of her close ones who also dedicated themselves to the same cause as her, not the list of people she intends to betray

And why does she need to separate her soul?

              Anonymous

Because the two fingers have direct control of the Empyrean who ascends the throne and Ranni doesn't want to become an Elden Lord under their thrall. Normally to prevent the Empyrean from going against their will the Two Fingers use a sleeper agent they created (Blaidd) to attack and force the issue but Ranni avoids their control+detection by moving her soul to a new body (the doll) and hiding until you (of your own volition and unknown to Ranni) kill Radagon who was holding the stars (time) at bay with his Gravity magic

                Anonymous

Okay so she could just not ascend the throne, the soul separation is entirely irrational.

                >she keeps the most dangerous agent of the two fingers around because she likes him
yeah, but sentimentality is human. She also didn't exactly have many options when it came to followers. That's why she fricks off and moves her body to the mini doll, she wants to move their plan ahead without his KGB code activating and killing her so she just leaves.

So she killed her brother and cut her soul from her body to... hide? With the realization that at any moment she could be found and everything she did was for nothing? Not only that, she surrounded herself with untrustworthy individuals that would have instantly sold her out but didn't for some reason?

Yeah, since there wasn't exactly any other options other than just giving up.
                >but didn't for some reason?
I wonder what this "some reason" is, it's not like loyalty or judge of character comes into it at all. HMMMMM. I guess since all the characters aren't perfect beings of logic the game is kusoge now

nta but how would they know she faked her death? also she had to physically go over to the two fingers and kill them in her quest line so I don’t think she could have killed them from her base. plus killing her brother was more about messing up the current order of the land.

Why would the two fingers give a shit about ranni if the two fingers are telling tarnished to become elden lords? Also what's the point of empyreans at all if random nobodies can become elden lords

the empryeans are people who can replace marika, the elden lords are just their spouses

                >Then she could have killed her two fingers and his in her castle without killing her brother
She needed the Fingerslayer Blade in order to do that. Her quest is all about finding said blade, with your help. She couldn't look for the blade with her Two Fingers breathing down her neck, so she had to fake her death.

"They were cursed with, uh... undeath." It took until the final DLC of the final game to finally explain what the frick happened EXACTLY.

                >entire story hinges on ranni killing her brother and her body to escape two fingers
                >somehow the two fingers which can telepathically sense ranni doesn't sense her still alive
                >actually it might have because she keeps it in her basement
                >if the two fingers can't sense her then there was no reason to kill her brother
                >if the two figners can sense her and she keeps it in her basement there was no reason to kill her brother
                >the entire reason the two fingers want her is for her to shit out babies for the golden order
                >why?
                >who knows
                >but this purpose doesn't really exist anymore with her not havign a physical body
                >likewise the two fingers are p[ushing for random people to become elden lord and take Marika as a concubine
                >but this doesn't make sense either because she's a rock
                >if marika is a rock and the two fingers are fine with that, there's no reason for the ranni plot to exist or the character of ranni to exist
                >if there's no reason for ranni to exist there's no reason for the black knives event to have happened
                >if there's no reason for the black knives plot to have happened there's no reason for the shattering of the elden ring
meaning every character in the game and every plotline doesn't matter and only exist to further the plot. There's no reason behind any of the characters doing anything because fromsoft never thought of a reason for why they would do such a thing

The fingers have influence over the gods while they are gods.
Ranni cut herself off quite physically from their influence. Think of the fingers like transceivers sending thought influencing radio signals to their brains. Ranni got sick of her will being influenced.

They want to force her to succeed Marika as the vessel of the Elden Ring and become a goddess queen. The Elden Lord is a different title.

Yet she still takes the Elden Ring and stablishes her order. The Elden Lord ending variations show the Greater Will is fine with vastly different types of order and that makes me think the only thing the Greater Will disapproved of when it comes to Ranni's plan is leaving the Lands Between and taking the Elden Ring away from the world.

You are moronic. She needed to die at the same time as another Demi-God so that she could kill her body but free her soul. Gowdyn had the vice versa, his soul is dead but his body “lives.” She needed to cheat true death.

        >She needed to die at the same time as another Demi-God so that she could kill her body but free her soul.
Now you're saying they had to die at the exact same time? That doesn't make any sense. I thought Ranni knew the secret of True Death kept by Maliketh but couldn't steal it so she used the help of the Assassins because they wanted Godwyn gone.

        >She needed to cheat true death.
True Death is a mark; anons told me she used it to kill her body but free her soul and that the assassins used it to kill Godwyn's soul and his left over living body was a side effect of the Erdtree trying to automatically revive him.

Nothing makes any fricking sense. This is why I don't follow Souls lore anymore. After Dark Souls 2, I realized they just made shit up as they went along and that nothing was supposed to coherent. It's lore info for the sake of lore info.

Because she needed another demigod to die at the same exact time as her, so only her body (and not her soul) would die.

      Cursemark of Death
      >Cursemark carved into the discarded flesh of Ranni the Witch. This cursemark was carved at the moment of Death of the first demigod, and should have taken the shape of a circle. However, two demigods perished at the same time, breaking the cursemark into two half-wheels. Ranni was the first of the demigods whose flesh perished, while the Prince of Death perished in soul alone.

How this "ritual" works exactly, we have no idea. Why she chose Godwyn and not someone else, we have no idea either. Was this also part of Marika's plan? Yep, we have no idea.

And I doubt they'll ever explain more than that. It's "muh magic" and we have to accept that's how it works. Destined Death can't kill two bodies and two souls at the same exact time, apparently, for reasons. Or maybe Ranni or someone else performed some sort of ritual to split the power of Destined Death into two daggers..? We can't say for sure.

What's important is that Ranni killed Godwyn's soul, and she did it to free her body from the influence of the Two Fingers.

          I think it's empyreans specifically

          [...]
so marika wants to kill her own son (she wants to break the ring in one of the church excerpts) and then gets mad she killed her own son

We don't know why she shattered the Elden Ring. All we can say for sure is that she planned all of this, or rather that she planned "something" (she created the Tarnished, sent all of them away, and then brought them back after she shattered the Elden Ring). If Godwyn dying was also part of that plan, we don't know.

Well, we can make a few safe assumptions about the Black Knife Assassins just being evil if not extremely antagonistic towards the Golden Order/Greater Will.

They're obviously not good guys, for one thing, considering they always show up around Death infested areas or are guarding Deathroot in a catacomb. They're also assassins. Assassins are generally not good people, the Round Table has their own assassins that use fricking scarlet rot crossbow bolts, so they're obvious all bad too.

She quite literally instigated the Night of the Black Knives (aka Long Knives, can definitely thank RR for that hack reference) for her own power. My theory is that Marika wanted the Tarnished (hopefully Godfrey) to reach her inside the Erdtree and kill the Elden Beast, so GW put the thorns there.
Both the guidance of grace and the words the Fingers hear are actually Marika trying to guide the Tarnished. So when you actually reach the Erdtree and the thorns, the Fingers realize that all along they have been working against the GW.
