      >Bloomberg sources include current and former Square Enix employees who remain anonymous, but stated the company's approach is to give each project a single producer.
      >These producers are then given full reign over the scope and direction of that project, but with a subsequent shortage of proper documentation and team structure, these sources said.
      >Contractors for Square Enix have also described an ad hoc process where project goals can shift without warning. This has resulted in an inconsistent quality among Square Enix games that don't live up to the company's reputation.

Reminder Mochizuki has always been right, and now this is all backed up by the May report

HURRY THE FRICK UP AND RELEASE FF16 AND REBIRTH FOR PC

I bet if Sony bought S-E they'd actually release Remake and Rebirth on Steam.

Sure but then Sony would see the remainder of their Playstation profits diminish further. The division as a whole is bringing in about $1.8 billion a year. Taking on the costs of Square Enix as a whole would be pretty costly for them.

Sony can't afford Square Enix as Sony has a 7% profit margin while Square Enix is bleeding money. They would unironically go bankrupt if they somehow managed to take Square Enix on.

It just means the game didn't necessarily generate a loss but I imagine Square was still hoping for flagship series to generate more interest.
The word through the grapevine is the Sony and Epic bags were ENORMOUS, enough to cover the full development and marketing budgets of all 3 games in the Remake trilogy and XVI. So the main concern Square is having on those FF games isn't the revenue but the interest level. The fact that nobody's fricking buying a PS5 for them and even those with PS5s aren't interested is really concerning for when they want to make these games with their own money again
It's never a good sign when your flagship is barely making waves

He said it didn't meet the high end of expectations. Which doesn't contradict Kiryu's statement of the game coming within expectations on the official transcript.
The underlying point is that the guy is probably either including stuff from the actual back-and-forth that the person taking the minutes/notes didn't think was an important detail or that got scrubbed a bit when they were editing the notes down to what goes in the official brief on their website.
Like if you read the Nintendo Q&A, you're definitely not getting the off-the-cuff response that includes every little thing the guys said. You're getting the cleaned up version that may summarize things or exclude tangents that both the asker and answerer gave

No, in this case the games are legitimately so moronicly expensive to make they REALLY needed them to sell gangbusters to turn a profit. That's something Final Fantasy used to be able to do with ease, not anymore tho

This time S-E actually could justify big numbers given that these are two mainline FF games that they've spent years trying to put their A game into, and not a 10 year old SNES port that's missing the PS1 version's additional content for no reason. The problem here was that they kept both of those Final Fantasy games PS5 exclusive in an age where nobody is buying Playstation for JRPGs and everybody (including Sony) know full well that these games are just going to be ported to PC in another year anyways.

        >disconnected with reality
I don't think so, at least not necessarily. There's also a matter of opportunity. You have a big, generally successful IP and a certain amount of time and budget to make a title. You'd like it to make as much as it can, and you feel like it should have been able to make more (and it has in the past).

Have they developed a single good game after the merger? X-2 was not released under Squaresoft. FF12 was mediocre. They burned entire console gen on FF13 which might be the worst game I have ever played. It was so awful I dropped out and skipped FF15, my first mainline FF I ignored. Then they announced FF7 remake. But of course there has to be a catch, it't not a remake but a reimagination with the SE's fanfic tier writing.

Absolutely. But those were late ports of a PS3 collection of PS2 games. They had already made back their money on the original games and the collection itself before the Switch Cloud version was ever considered.
But Rebirth? XVI? Square may very well be praying for the Switch 2 to be their lifeline. And I'm praying to god that Nintendo does SOMETHING to keep those games off the system so that Square can just fricking get their head out of their ass when it comes to even considering exclusivity deals. I think the entire FF series should become an albatross around their neck so they understand the long-term consequences of their actions to take short-term deals that do nothing but shrink the audience and kill interest

          Anonymous

All they'd need to do is reduce all the assets down from 4K to 720p, that's a massive file size reduction in and of itself, and then offload other voice dubs to a separate download.

            Anonymous

            Anon, FF7 Remake doesn't HAVE 720p-quality assets
The Steam version of the game only goes down to PS4 quality settings. They didn't even re-render the assets so that the PC version could have ACTUAL low-quality assets.
Square is AMAZINGLY lazy these days with ports. They're not going to re-render the Remake assets for Switch 2 if they didn't do it for PC. Hell, they barely uprezzed them for PS5, they just fixed some of the loading issues on some doors and shit but tons of objects still look like blurry UE4 shit

        >Maybe stop releasing games as PS5 exclusives
That's what they announced just now, hell they already planned to bail on PS5 after 16 wasn't doing well. It's funny because they saw the exact same trend with DQ11 and FF7R1, as soon as those games stopped being Playstation exclusive they saw massive boosts in sales and that the PS version was suddenly dwarfed by PC. If they just had a PC version available on the same day as Playstation the sales numbers would probably still be skewed heavily into PC despite all the piracy going on.

NTA, but I wouldn't be surprised if the crux of their "stubbornness" in having this revelation so late into this generation stemmed from them foolishly taking extremely early preemptive PS5 exclusivity deals (likely as in mid or barely late 2010s "early"). Notice how almost no other third-party took PS5 deals this gen. Just Shift-Up (a much smaller outfit) and Koei Tecmo (who WERE genuine morons for thinking that another Nioh rehash was going to be a 5M seller on PS5 alone).

Words cannot express how much I am going to laugh when their games continue to underperform because the issues are not and never were PS5 exclusivity.

I mean good fricking god XVI sold over 3 million copies. If THAT is a disappointing return on investment then the problem has ceased to be the sales figure and is far deeper.
I will laugh so hard when this trashfire company dies.

Versus XIII was really his first attempt at killing Square Enix. The Remake trilogy is his second, more effective attempt. Will Nomura be allowed a third attempt at killing Square Enix? I'm thinking it's time we removed belts from Square Enix.

XVI met initial expectations. Only Rebirth did not, and Rebirth is the second part of a Remake of what many consider to be the most iconic RPG in the history of the medium. People just don't like Nomura's time jannies, and for good reason. The game is fun to play, but it reeks of Nomura. He has got to go.

      Realistically, Sony already has.
They likely signed a deal for all three Remake trilogy entries. If anything, Square is laughing to the bank with getting to basically coast on Sony's money for 10 years. Sony is probably more mad that the games aren't moving hardware more or not really generating a ton of software revenue

I think the concern Square is having is they've maybe sold to everyone who gives a frick already. When Remake came to PC, it only sold about 2 million extra copies against Steam's 130 MAU (no idea what percentage of that 2 million was Epic).
The issue is that the total audience for FF is shrinking and that means that Square is in deep shit because their silver bullet franchise has lots all its power

Normally I'd say "engineering competence" or "project management"
Here, I think they mean "we're going to be re-using game mechanics and making lots of clones of our own games". They want that Ubislop formula money, where they can basically just re-use an underlying set of mechanics and slap on some new assets and pump a new game out every year at minimal cost.
They want to cut down on directors coming up with completely new types of mechanics or gameplay with every game and want to start just making the same 3 types of games over and over again because it's cheaper and shortens dev cycles at the cost of creativity

It really isn't. It sold off of "Oh I hear that dungeons and dragons game is good. Stardew valley is getting boring maybe I'll pick it up. Stranger things makes dungeons and dragons look fun but I don't want to read books." A large number of my co-worker played BG3 and I assure you the don't watch streamers and don't read video game news site. BG3 just got lightning in a bottle lucky with timing. Bear sex is only important for people who live and breath video games.

A PS5 that mind you, was scalped for years and normal people literally could not even buy one

      And whose fault was that?
The issue now is that the FF audience is so small and have had their audience basically cannibalized away by other JRPG series that even if they go multiplat, they'll be lucky to hit 3 million sales in the first month. My guess is FFXVI is at 3.5-4 million sales after 10 months or so and most of those follow-up sales were with the DLC release.
That game has basically stopped selling unless they seriously drop price and by that point people will look at it as a discount title the same way they look at The Order 1886 or the Horizon games

      This
The thing Square is failing to account for is that these big AAA games have their moment in the sun and then they fade. Because there are 20 games just like them. There's always a new God of War or Horizon or Spiderman or Resident Evil or [insert major photorealistic AAA prestige video game here] coming up and releasing simultaneously on all platforms. Like, people are not going to pick up FF7 Rebirth or FFXVI on PC if the Elden Ring DLC is coming out that week. And there's ALWAYS going to be some shit coming out that people would rather get hype for because it's actually new and not just sloppy seconds of a game most people have watched on youtube or twitch most of the way through (provided they cared at all in the first place)

Well and on Steam, indie hits like Hades 2 or Balatro or whatever twitch streamers are looking at are going to take more attention than XVI or Rebirth ever could.
FF is just completely fricked from all sides because they opened the AAA pandora's box back in 1997 and are now being fricked by AAA games that market themselves better and indies that are more viral and more popular and just as content rich

Square never bothered to foster their brand in other platforms
Look at how Capcom or Fromsoft grinded the frick out of each new release
Look at how SEGA sucked it up with the slowballing releases of Yakuza early on

And now look at where they are now
PC players know their games and are excited for them
Dragons Dogma 2 coasted entirely on OC players trusting Capcom

Square has no trust whatsoever no built in goodwill to tap from
This multiplatform decision should have frickibg happened HALF A DECADE AGO IF NOT MORE

              Exactly
Square also puts negative effort into their PC ports most of the time. The Chrono Trigger stuff is obvious but the VILE condition of the 9 port being just the iOS version is kind of unacceptable. Or at least it would be if more people either cared about IX or didn't just use the Moguri Mod.
And that's to say nothing of how Remake on PC is just the PS5 version with worse optimization
Fingers crossed that the PC releases of XVI and Rebirth flop

      >How is part 3 going to get affected by this
They already have it funded by Sony and Epic so they're going to keep their target release date of the 30th anniversary of FF7 in 2027.
My guess here is that the main way this affects Part 3 is that they're going to make sure that game scales properly. They're probably going to prepare some low-quality assets for a Switch 2 release and high-quality assets for a PC release and try to have those ports out the MINUTE that the exclusivity deal allows it.
The issue with Remake, XVI and Rebirth is that they're too custom-tailored for Playstation hardware so they kind of don't benefit from any stronger hardware, and they can't really scale down at all because the lowest-quality assets they have are for the PS4 (Remake) or PS5 (XVI and Rebirth). The devs are unlikely to go back to the studio and start regenerating assets at lower and higher qualities for ports because that's more cost that they're not being paid for

But it's an awful outlook for them, because the entire reason they made it a trilogy(?) is for previous titles to gain momentum with each successive release. It defeats the purpose of the series' existence in the first place and doesn't allow for its bloated production/marketing cost.

Probably not. They're likely looking to just shit out an axed ending and then move on to get DQ12 out of the gate, before moving onto FF17 ASAP.

                Anonymous

No but they should think long-term. Player acquisition and reputation will be needed for FF17 and this would be a hot topic of the month in the gaming world. I think it would even boost sales of part 3 to greater overall profit than the loss of handouts of the first two games no one cares about. But for that they would have to think outside the box. It's more likely Capcom will remake Dino Crisis before SE does something good.

100% agree. I also don't know if SE even still has the option to go long-term with their current losses.
But that's a hole they dug themselves and is well deserved.

Endwalker wasn't the big ending people thought it would be, because nobody actually died and nothing of value happened after the fact.
Which only makes DT even less worthwhile, because now you know the story will never involve any meaningful stakes and WoL and the Scions will forever remain this merry Scooby-Doo-esque band.
I don't think DT will perform THAT badly. But SE probably expects Endwalker numbers which it will just not hit and then panic and do something stupid.

Ending to the arc, not ending to the game.
If all or most of the scions would have died, the story would have had proper impact and DT would have been a bittersweet "return to your beginnings" as WoL struggles to apply their power without being directed by all the Mary Sues and Gary Stus. Would have also elevated the random scion npcs like the Elezen and Roegadyn to main NPC status.
People would have wondered "where the hell is the story headed next now?" rather than "Oh, cool. Another meaningless theme park."
Would have also made .1 - 5 story much, much better as a lead-up to DT, rather than the Zero wankjob.

It was bound to flop because first you need to play the first remake to play this and considering that PS5 brings a lot of the cod/fortnite casual players it's safe to assume that most of PS5 playerbase didn't play it and the ones who did are final Fantasy fans who excepted a faithful remake and instead got some multiverse meta commentery shit.
Second, it was long as frick and not in a good way. 3rd people genuinely don't care that much about aerith but they tried to put her everywhere, not only that but her death doesn't hold any emotional weight now because we're at the stage of "is she really gone though" due to the multiverse logic

          >3rd people genuinely don't care that much about aerith
It's not only that people care more about Tifa, and at this point probably more about Yuffie than Aerith, it's also that the entire circumstances surrounding Cloud and Aerith were always badly written. FF7R only further compounded the issue AND, as you explained, introduced more bullshit on top of it.
The game is just awful in all avenues and I sincerely think they cannot save the project, but also cannot abandon it, as their entire business strategy was centered around FF16, FF7R and DQ12. They literally have nothing left at this point.

Can confirm this. I liked Aerith in og FF7. In remake she was ok but she really never appealed that much to me because of her 13 yo pixie girl personality considering she's the second oldest one in the party and trying to force herself that much especially with the opera performance felt too corny. Like not the Corny but endearing jrpg but Corny in a Disney movie kind of way which is something you should avoid in a jrpg especially one with voice acting.

Like, one of the reasons FF was able to succeed as well as it did in the past was by insisting to people that you don't need to play the other FF games to play the newest one. FF7 clearly brought in tons of people who never played FF1-6. It's funny to see the Remake trilogy forget this fact

That bit is their reasoning as to why they are demolishing the Creative Business Unit structure in favor of conventional studios because it caused a lot of questions during the shareholder meeting.
They realized that if a single producer isn't worth his shit, multiple projects will fail, even if on paper the project was good and organizationally sound.
It's to gauge who is the problem and who isn't and then "restructure" them accordingly. They also realized categorizing studios and then sharing work-load between studios only caused more issues.

The PS5 exclusivity simply turned a couple incredibly ill-advised expensive gambles into lethal certainties.
      >FF16 came from an astonishingly tonedeaf place of wanting to "reinvent" the series, missing the mark on its new target audience (with its blatant Game of Thrones appeal being largely dead for half a decade thanks to the legendarily blundered latter seasons, and Yoshi-Peepee's insistence on "turn-based being dead" being laughably wrong in the face of several turn-based RPG successes that year)
      >FF7R2 arrogantly bet on absolutely nobody having been burned by R1's deceptive and spiteful divergence from what people had wanted for decades, or revelation that this shit was going to be a multiple-part release spread across multiple console generations and the better part of a decade
PS5 exclusivity wasn't the be-all, end-all reason for these games eating shit. It just worsened already fairly inevitable conclusions.

I do not understand their obsession with Playstation-only/playstation first releases. They are not even paid by sony to do this, they just do it for free. Excluding 60% of the possible consumer base for no reason.

      >They are not even paid by sony to do this, they just do it for free.
They are paid by Sony to do this; as in they voluntarily enter an exclusivity contract with Sony for extra money.
Sony detailed in their shareholder meeting back then that FF16 was supposed to be PS5's killer app and "introduce a new playerbase to the Playstation ecosystem", i.e. make people buy PS5's to play FF16.
FF16 was just so dogshit that only people who already owned a PS5 bothered with it.

do you know how much sony paid for it? I imagine their games would have a pretty big PC userbase to not make it worth it. They release to pc years later when no one cares anymore.

          >do you know how much sony paid for it?
Unless the contract leaks, nobody will ever know.
However, while SE has had a long partnership with Sony, they are not THAT stupid to take a shitty deal. The reason they take the deal to begin with is to offset some of the costs of production pre-release.
And in the latter stages, SE seemed to have some serious leverage, because the exclusivity deals started to become shorter and shorter, with a PC release coming as early as a couple of months later.

They paid enough money Square managed to pay FF16 upfront instead of using amortization.
Sony also took charge of promoting the game, which means Square didn't pay shit for ads and such.

Still didn't save Square's ass because Square is dumb and can't manage shit right.

Because for each FFXVI they had also at least 5 mobile games, 5 AA games and at least 2 AAA games in development.
And out of those only the AA games would pay themselves off, just google how many mobile games Square released and ended service over the last 5 years.

This company bleeds money like no tomorrow.

People aren't aware of this enough. SE has a crippling mobage addiction. So much so that, as stated in OP's post, they're STILL going ahead with shitting out mobage and even making an in-house studio just for mobage.
They just can't quit it. Unironically addicted.

      >split a remake into three $70 games spread across YEARS
The reason they did it across years was because they wanted to create a universe to milk fans with "mixed media projects". Books, merchandise, anime, collab deals, mobage etc.
And then in between main releases they wanted to milk fans further with sidestory DLCs.
On paper it sounds good, but only if FF7R wasn't so dogshit. Now they're stuck with running train that has no goods loaded, but an obligation for the train to arrive at its destination.

Remakegays have been some of the most undeservedly smug and pretentious c**ts here for the past few years, so them being knocked down a few pegs is extremely well earned. 16gays were obnoxious too, but were way out of Remakegays' league.

Watching Remakegays scream themselves blue in the face that sales suddenly don't matter to them anymore (after years of bashing critics over the head with R1's sales numbers as its only justifying factor) and insisting that R2's totally a shoo-in for GotY isn't the icing on the cake. It's prep work for a second, already fully-iced cake.

    >SE restructured the CBUs into 5 game development teams and 1 mobile team

Confirmed: Hamaguchi has Creative Studio 1
Confirmed: Yoshi-P has Creative Studio 3

Asano was recently promoted alongside Hamaguchi and Nozue
Nozue was recently promoted alongside Hamaguchi and Asano
Miyake was recently stated to have moved from CBU2 to mobile
The report surmised Saito would take over Miyakes old role

Ergo with 3 dev Studios left beside CS1 and CS3, plus Miyake going to mobile so most likely the new Mobile division, that leaves Asano and Nozue (recently promoted alongside Hamaguchi who just got made head of CS1) and Saito (who was previously head of BD7 prior to going to CBU2 and is implied to continue that similar role) will most likely be the studio heads of CS2, CS4 and CS5.
CS2 probably to Saito, taking DQ and Nier from CBU2
CS4 probably Asano, taking Octopath/Bravely/HD2D staff from CBU2
And CS5 probably Nozue, taking FFXV/Luminous staff from CBU2
With the mobile team being the CBU4/5 staff plus whatever mobile stuff in CBU2 there was like DQ mobile stuff
