You're skipping the parts you don't replay every time you load a save that wasn't intended as part of the game's design. This can make a game much easier, certain sections can be difficult because they contain multiple difficult challenges. Beating a section with 3 harsh challenges one after the other is a lot harder when you need to do them all 3 in one go than it is when you only have to do each a single time because you use an unintended save after each one.

Play however you want, but this is clearly cheating and makes the game a lot easier than intended. The intended way would push you into learning to play well so you can beat earlier challenges easily as you keep retrying challenges farther along the way. That is clearly not the same as beating every challenge a single time.

Save states or rewind will ultimately sully your overall experience of the game. When all challenge is removed, what’s the point? I think if you just want to have fun and hit a wall you cannot beat, rewind or save state your way past it once or twice and go on playing the game again as it was intended. Tons of games were programmed terribly and we shouldn’t have to deal with some of the shittier points as we get older and have less and less TIME.

Imagine a guy said he could play a song but when he gets to a hard part he fucks it up every time, and each time he just says "hold on, wait" and tries that one section over and over again. He eventually plays all the correct notes, in between a bunch of wrong ones he says don't count.

That's what I think of rewinding in games, you might have technically been present to experience all of the content, but there's a very specific challenge that was designed and you objectively failed. You can say you finished it, technically, in the same way the imaginary musician made it to the end of a list of notes, but he didn't actually perform the song, like you didn't actually beat the game.

He only successfully played the song once he did the whole thing correctly in one shot, without take-backs. Just like with games.

I don't care if people use rewind or cheats or savescumming or anything if that's fun for them. But I don't think people should be in denial that it changes the experience significantly and how much to allow it is a big part of game design. An unlimited ability to rewind time (which is what unlimited quickloading is) is a hugely powerful ability to give to the player.

That's all good, but for people that want to discuss the game together it makes sense to have a common definition. Beating a game generally is taken to mean you beat it without external modification or cheat codes. Nothing wrong with changing the game, but when talking about the game's design or difficulty, or your general experience with the game, you're not coming from the same place. Since by playing with save state abuse or rewinding, you didn't play through the game as it was originally designed.

Nothing wrong with it, play how you have fun. It only bothers me when people deny that it's a different experience and challenge.

      Anonymous

I don't see what's wrong with continues, if they're in the game, that's because the developers made the game with continues in mind, so using them isn't straying away from the intended experience.

        Anonymous

By that logic savescumming is just fine because it lets failures go unpunished.

          Anonymous

I'd say save scumming is different because it's not part of the original intended experience, it's something added by features like emulators or re-releases in modern machines, that you couldn't do back then, however if when you lose all of your lives the game gives you a "Continue?" option, even back then, then using it is simply using the resources that are given to you and following the games' rules, you're not cheating or anything like that, so it's legit.

            Anonymous

            >I'd say save scumming is different because it's not part of the original intended experience
it was a hardware limitation only. saving required additional cost to the publisher so they didn't do it, and the vast majority of games used "codes" to jump to where you were anyway as save game replacement.
the moment it became physically feasible to implement saving the game; developers did.

arcade games that required coins to play are the only games where "beating them" matters; because "beating them" actually meant something, not getting garden gnomeed by the arcade. Instead of loosing and paying $0.25/min you could play for 30 mins.

When I started emulating I used to savescum like a moron. In harder games I'd be pressing the savestate button after every second. I stopped recently simply because while I was getting to the end and seeing what the game had to offer I realized I was committing very little of the game to memory. For example I couldn't even recognize a single song from a game I had just finished playing because between saving and loading the song was constantly being interrupted.
I've made peace with the fact that some older games I just won't naturally reach the end because of some arcade style difficulty spike.

A lot of NES games have very shitty design and deserve to have rewinds and save states abused on them. Any game with limited or no continues automatically justifies using them.
That said, if you use them on SNES games (excluding some of the early ones with limited continues), you're a casual gay.

      >Any game with limited or no continues automatically justifies using them
At most it justifies using it either at the beginning of a stage for infinite continues, or at a checkpoint for infinite lives. Anything more is gayry

      Anonymous

      >Any game with limited or no continues automatically justifies using them.
They're designed around letting the player make a set amount of mistakes, and going over that means you have to try again. You're going beyond the developer's intended design by adding continues, especially if a game actually has mechanics to give players more live for doing things like finding secret. Yes I use mistakes because there are very few times even in many of the bullshit classic games where you are not responsible for your own deaths.

      Anonymous

Limited continues are okay and often part of the challenge. For example, I'm playing Contra Hard Corps on Mega Drive right now and while you die after 1 hit, the game gives you 3 lives and 5 continues which is definitely more than fair. It's still pretty challenging especially solo.

It depends on the game and how/where you quicksave. Saving before the boss so you don't have to go through the same level a hundred times is fine, but quicksaving during boss fights is cheating. It's also okay to quicksave at the start of a level if said game has no extra lifes or continues. Things like that add nothing to challenge other than burning you out and making you drop a game sooner due to boredom and frustration.
