Screen quality comparison only, which one should I go for?

Screen quality comparison only, which one should I go for? I've read that the 64GB is sharper, but the colours are better on the 512GB model

512GB also has an anti-glare screen

    What?
    There is no difference.

it was literally a selling point on the steam page, anon. the 512gb has a matte screen. the other versions are gloss.

op, the matte screen means protectors dont go on, and with the glass on it (that comes with it), touch is reduced by "a whole bunch". if you dont plan to use the touchscreen, then its whatever.

But its the same screen, anti glare cant make thr screen less sharp can it?

what does matte mean to you, and how exactly do you think it works

clear, defined, pointy, strong. stuff like that.

so lets go over what a matte screen is. what is the point of a matte screen. well, its to stop glare. it does this by have a rough surface, as opposed to a flat, smooth surface. that way, when light hits it, it scatters, as opposed to reflects perfectly. lets be very clear on this. it uses a non-flat surface to cause light to spread out.

now, lets say you take a light source from under this material. the light goes through it, and then hits the rough surface, causing it to spread and defuse, before it hits your eyeballs.

would you think the image would be more, or less clear. sharp. pointy. strong. remember, the light is now scattered, across the windy plains...

Matte screen means a texture is applied to the surface of the display which affects how outside lights reflect on it. But this also affects how light coming from the display goes through it, resulting in a less sharp image.

            Okay okay I get it.
Didn't know matte screens scatter the light, I thought its an extra layer that absorbs the light or some shit.

I have a matte screen laptop that doesnt feel less sharp than glossy screens so yeah...

its really not that massive of a difference. id say the gloss is better just because of what i said in the other post, you can "choose" either with different screen protectors, while the matte screen is a permanent part of the device. as for storage capacity of matte version, i dont think its necessary either. go to your games library, filter it by "steam deck compatible" and see how many you actually have. I installed everything even if i had no intentions of playing it and didnt really need more capacity. And if you dont want to open a device and replace an ssd, you can just slap a microsd in it. people will tell you its slower and has less performance running games off an ssd, but oh well. put your shitty indie games on the sd, put the real games on the internal ssd.

              tl;dr
okay with opening devices: 64 gig and replacement ssd and matte or gloss screen protector
not okay with opening devices: 256 gig and an sd card and matte or gloss screen protector
really likes matte screens, doesnt like opening devices, doesnt care about the touch part of the touchscreen and has money to blow: 512 gig

Just letting you know. Your laptop is a tiny bit different. Glass and matte on tvs/laptops are usually actual glass and then a plastic or similar alternative. Glass provides better contrast and 'zooms' in the pixels a bit. Matte helps stops reflections but does not much else to your view of the content.

The SD has an etching over the screen. Both are glass because they are touchscreens and the only "plastic" touchscreen worth anything is the Samsung foldables. The etching softens the image a tiny bit, but also stops reflections from light in your play area.

Otherwise both SD screens are identical. I have both, you can barely tell unless in a room with lightbulbs exposed or the sun. Neither is much softer.

You just have to, it's not worth getting your naked screen all dinged up.

Things like this are the reason the Deck failed. Too many models raising questions that have no clear answers.

They just need better names. Naming them solely by the size of their drives is a mistake because it causes people to think that's the only difference. The 64GB doesn't even have an NVME, it's a regular SSD.

        Anonymous

Its the same screen but the 512GB one has an anti-glare treatment on the glass which gives it a slightly hazy look. Unless you really want the carrying case with the different colors or youre afraid of cracking the thing open to replace the drive, get the cheaper models and slap an anti-glare screen protector on it if you really need it. I've used my deck plenty of times in a car on a sunny day and I could see just fine without any anti-glare shit so you probably don't need it.

        >regular SSD
worse, its SD card tech on an m.2 card. The actual drive type wasn't the killer for it, it was the size. It can fill up really quickly with compatibility shit.

Every steam deck screen is trash compared to Switch OLED or any retro emulation handheld released this year

      >chink handhelds are good
lmfao use your android phone you retard. Your choice to not use a good controller if you pretend touchscreens are involved in this discussion

Also the Switch OLED is trash compared to the ally 120hz. Or the 8.4 1netbook devices that do 120hz.

android phones have inherent input lag. its fine if your gonna play turn based stuff, but not so much if you plan to play something like mario bros. no controller will make that go away.

        [...]
        Hm...
I have a laptop, but its an old weak thinkpad, even if it wasnt I would probably not play on it.

I have a PSP and 3DS but I would like something to emulate and play indies in the living room with a bigger screen.
Switch size would be nice, not sure if the deck is too big.

Not planning on taking it outside.

if your fine with a switch, the deck isnt that huge of a jump. if you were just gonna emulate old games, id go for a miyoo mini, you can get them for 55$ and itll go up to ps1. ive been playing driver 1, klonoa and some other various ps1 games on it.

do you have a steam account and an already existing catalogue of games? thats the only real thing its gonna do that other cheaper devices cant do

Wait the Deck has a glossy screen by default?
    Isnt that like, fucking retarded?

it really depends. id argue your better off with a glossy screen and then putting a matte screen protector on it, so you can choose. if your going to be playing it outside, the mattes better. if your intention is to use it while on the shitter or from the cold, lonely confines of your bedroom, go gloss.

Unless you're a complete moron you can easily install a new SSD whenever you want. You can also buy $10 screen protector that has the same anti-glare etched tempered glass as the 512GB model.

Unrelated to screens, but I only use my deck at home. Steam link via WiFi gives me 10ms latency.

Being able to play ALL my library from my desktop at max settings is INSANE. On top because you're streaming your games the decks battery lasts for over 4 hours and the deck stays quiet and cool the entire time.

I loved my deck when I was in the hospital for 2 months, but now I love it even more at home.

its big. i have one and honestly i just use one of those chink emulator gameboy things instead because it fits in my pocket. im pretty much never in a situation where id have the deck, but not a laptop or something. if you dont have a laptop and your really traveling/on a bus/whatever, sure, but otherwise i cant really say get one.

It's best played laying down in bed, or in some position where you can rest your hands. And with relatively low battery life (2-4h from my experience), don't expect it to be handheld you can take outside on long trips.

nta but the things so honkin big, i was going to print a little spacer/divider and strap a giant battery pack on the back. theres so much space between your fingers and the handles already jut out far enough i figured you could get a 10,000mah+ rechargable battery on it, and still have a space so your not blocking the fan.
its a bummer its not flat(ish) like a psp, because with a little portable screen and mini keyboard/mouse, id use it like ghetto laptop with its linux OS.

those properly sized 1tb saberant drives that came out in the past year is what I grabbed. Was pretty cheap new on amazon compared to the "used" drives ebay shucksters were trying to scalp.

I just got a 256GB someone else removed from their deck, and I barely use it, just install everything on an SD card.

That said I don't use deck for latest AAA releases, got a PC for that. It's best for indies or 5+ year old stuff that will run at 40fps on medium.

The only noticeable difference to me is when downloading games, the SD card speed can be a bottleneck if you have fibre internet.

One thing I read when buying is that over time the cache, temp files etc. will fill out the 64GB, and you need to delete those things manually using a separate program once in a while if you don't want to upgrade.

hopefully your asking about spec differences and not what the "physical difference" is.

Of course. I believe it doesn't read NVMe SSD's at full potential, so was looking for a comparison on load times differences, etc.

          Anonymous

the eMMC drive in the 64GB model will give you comparable speed to an SD card because its mostly the same tech though you'll reach a bottleneck with the reader before you do with the drive. A proper NVMe drive will give you better performance but at those speeds youre limited to the CPU. Even if the NVMe isn't running at full theoretical max its still a big improvement over eMMC/SD cards.

so if i get a 64gb I can plop in an NVME ssd and be done with it ye?
i dont need the more expensive models?
there is a bloke here selling a steamdeck barely used 64gb for 180 chf

Yes but you need the right size NVMe drive, a 2230 if I remember correctly.

get whichever model fits your budget. If you don't like the reflective screen of the lower models, get a matte screen protector. if you do that and the colors are washed out, install vibrantdeck
