Selaco

Selaco came out. It's difficult. Feels unbalanced. Enemies take too long to die. Every battle ends with me at the minimum 35 health after regenerating from 1. Too much smoke and shit makes combat difficult to follow. MC moves too slow. I should be able to cancel the shotgun reload animation into the slide kick and the fact that I can't make me angry. Mapping dual SMG's to right click when literally every other weapon is right click to zoom has caused me many deaths. The demo was much more enjoyable than the final project. What were they thinking?

    This is my main complaint. I fricking hate not being able to see. Speaking of, why is the flashlight limited? It's not doom 3, just let me keep it on or stuff making levels so dark.

    You can change this. Dual Wield is an optional alt fire, it just so happens most guns' initial alt fire is a small zoom. You shouldn't be zooming with the smgs either way because their bullet spread is awful. Use them more like a shotgun.

    Don't feel that way but I play on the highest difficulty.
    Enemies don't die instantly but they aren't bulletsponge either, it's actually fun how stressful the combat is, genuinely feel like fighting for my life.
    My few grips are:
    >smoke and visual shit get overwhelming at times
    >weapon inventory is a mess, arbitrary numbers placement, most of my death are from fumbling to pull the right weapon and dying because I accidentally brought out my fists instead of my revolver or rifle
    >visual design as a whole is messy, most of the time I have no idea where I'm going or what I'm looking for and I just stumble on shit randomly while combing the map

      I play on the middle difficulty and I do feel enemies take a bit too much punishment. The shotgun doesn't even reliably oneshot the weaker enemies without hugging them. I figure it's to encourage headshots but I'd gladly give those away because I don't think slowing down to aim for their head meshes well with the fast pace they encourage with the dashes. In fact, I'm sure anyone dying too much is trying to play slow and methodically when you should just dash all over and shotgun them at point blank. If you pop up and down cover every enemy just rushes you and start shooting you from all angles. The game's multiple designs clash with each other.

        you can't dash into enemies on high difficulties, you will get instagibbed while you wiener your shotty
        maybe it works early game when enemies are sparse but later on your get fricking swarmed so it just doesn't work
        what works best for me is funneling enemies into positions where they either clump up or are predictable - getting flanked results in an instant death

          Guess I'm not at the point dashing into enemies doesn't work yet, but in my experience going tacticool just gets me swarmed, flanked and killed. It's like fighting a zerg rush, nobody's afraid of being shot but me.

    All the reviews saying it's a great boomer shooter. It's not a boomer shooter so what fricking game are they playing? (to be fair devs don't say it is)
    Everyone saying the ai is great. Flanking feels like they just choose a random indirect path to you not some logical plan. They travel super fast and if you find a choke point they all run through it like lemmings letting you pick them off.
    Armour and health is pointless as they'll disappear instantly. Not even sure why they're in the game, you should just have that 35 health that recharges.
    I'm convinced barely anyone that comments on it has much further than the first level. The mall may be one of the worst things ever put in a videogame.

If they are trying to look like old Doom/Quake then I'd assume they've never played such games. Doom is still played to this day because it was clean, simple, straightforward and fun. Although, every "boomer shooter" tries to go the opposite direction of that by having the worst visual diarrhea possible and a bunch of janky, borderline vomit-inducing animations and camera movement.
        This one is apparently made in GZDoom, which means they could've effortlessly captured the essence of the classics by simply not adding a metric ton of effects to an already perfect source port.

          The guns are actually decent.

          1.pistol has good stun power and damage. Nice range too.
          2.AR needs upgrades but it's great for the basic enemies that actually can get pain stated.
          3.shotgun is very powerful and mainly needs a better pumping speed and no empty chamber nonsense.
          4.Smg is okay when enemies are right Infront of you, but it's mainly an anti spider gun for me.
          5.the plasma is a plasma
          6.GL fricking sucks
          7.dmr fricking sucks

          The enemies and how they behave is the real issue.

              I've had slower more tactical gameplay blasting demons in hideous destructor, which also does balls to the walls and fast better too.

              I genuinely don't get what they were thinking with the design, and I can't drop difficulty either for some fricking reason, so I can't even experiment to see whether the game was balanced on a certain diff.

    Playing on the highest diff, everything was okay until the mall.
    At that point any arguments of "le tactical" fricking die.
    The game becomes as imbalanced as those moments from halo 2 or blood, except I'm not having fun and killing enemies isn't as enjoyable.

    I really want to like it but...
    1.movement is atrocious, you constantly get caught on shit and the dash/slide takes way too long to cool down.
    2.once enemies start popping shields and get promoted things start become a slog of just dumping them with the biggest weapons and hoping you kill them before they just aimbot you down.
    3.AI can flank, and that's as far as their intellect goes. they know where you are at all times and will simply aim at you last seen position, but they still move straight for you. They prefire long before you can see them.

    It’s kinda like the nu-Wolfenstein games where you might initially think it’s a movement-based boomer shooter but your character is way too fragile for that, so the actual best way to play is funneling enemies into tight corridors and popping in and out of cover to pick them off. It’s pretty weird but feels like how the game is meant to be played.

          The burst is like that so that you can move as quickly and smoothly as possible on the go at long distances.

      Diagonal movement does make you faster and certain moves do make enemies inaccurate.
      But they still just start shooting before they can see you, it becomes especially noticeable when plasma troops show up because they can tank explosives, barely react to being shot, and their projectiles always start coming at you before you've even turned a corner.

        Does difficulty influence projectile speed?
        I've noticed that plasma gunners will always put shots on any movements I make unless I grab cover, doesn't help that plasma seems to have AOE.
        And honestly cover feels kinda useless for anything that isn't breaking line of sight and attacking from different angles after every exchange of fire.

Pushing an older engine as far as Selaco does adds to the charm of the game. You can see all the effort that goes into making Selaco as polished as possible.

          That's because Szymansky had vision, these guys are still trying to figure things out.
          I really would like to see the game with better AI, Doom AI and what you can do with it just doesn't cut it for this type of game.
          A notable example is how enemies have attack states like a boomer shooter where they get locked into the action of attacking, that's why shotgunners have a tendency to essentially just fire in awkward pauses with pin point accuracy.

    The fact that they're trying to always flank you makes their behaviour rather predictable. More then once I got stuck playing 'ring around the rosie' for half a minute, trying to flank an enemy who was trying to flank me.

        My problem is more that absolutely nothing happen while you backtrack so forgetting to save is pretty easy until you accidentally commit sudoku.             Oh yeah I forgot to mention it, my problem is the weapon placement, the rifle, THE STARTING WEAPON is on 4, fists on 1 and revolver on 2, if I press 3, it does nothing. More than once I got stuck with fists or revolver while trying to get my rifle out and it ended badly.

    That's how I felt about Forune's Run as well. Cool aesthethics and punchy combat but while individual parts of the game turned out great it doesnt work that well together. Like you can spend entire game being stealthy and tactical and the game even sortf of nudges you to this playstyle at one point but then you reach the bossfight and it's all about having explosives and constantly moving while dodging and shooting. And dev was very smug about people's complaints saying that you dhould have learned by then.
    Shame. I just want more HL like shootans with slower pace and where you interact with surroundings and not just run ahead.

      I liked shooting a dude behind glass - the microsecond between glass breaking and bullet hitting puts him on alert state and disables the one shot kill out of stealth.
      Its a very minor thing, but also showcases just how dumb the dev is in that he couldn't spend two minutes to hack around that by having the alert state activate like 0.5sec after such events.

        Trepang2 did it well, because the Devs playtested their game, they outright tell you that rage mode isn't perfect and that extreme is going to be over the top.

        But the issue isn't difficulty really, its design, imagine DMD if you couldn't stun lock and dodge virtually every enemy attack with correct combos, that's Selaco on admiral.

    Sitting at about 1.8 hours played and trying to decide if I want to refund. Does it get better after the first mission? Just beat that juggernaut boss guy and moved to the next area. Feels like there are barely any enemies so far and gunplay feels kind of poor. Also pretty wary of the devs adding the troony stuff back in from the demo, I don't trust these homosexuals one bit.

      This. Restarted my run on the same difficulty right after the hydro plant and played aggressively instead of always peeking from cover, started mowing through enemies with the slide kick and melee knockback. Only did cover peeking on long sightlines, which is much easier to do at range because you can just sidestep most attacks. The game is definitely rough around the edges, but some of you should really switch up your play style.

      Then again, I'm only in the parking garage. I might end up eating shit later.

    Selaco is so fricking GOATED (currently on E1M3 after 5 hours of Admiral hardcore), it's not just tacticool Doom (that would be mediocre mods like Brutal Doom or Siren), it's Brutal Doom + Star Wars Jedi Outcast (the extremely aggressive storm troopers balanced by projectile attacks) + Vanquish/Ultrakill. The mooks are the best of any corridor shooter, significantly better balanced and stronger in terms of moves than FEAR or CoD-- for once in a zoom-based cover shooter sitting back and plinking is completely non-viable on the highest difficulty, you have to engage them guerilla style and either outstrafe their bullets or have high enough headshot accuracy to cancel their windup with painstate (they have two, a small and large btw) or an instant flying kick, and defensively juggle the seperate dash jump and slide/slide jump cooldown combined with diagonal strafing+mouse turning (faster than side strafing) to escape their rushdown tactics until they enter reload and you can finish them off. And that's not even getting into how good the level design and secret hunting is. Incredibe accomplishment by the devs

        You absolutely can, your dash-jump and unzoomed (ads slows you) strafe jumping evades their fire even on admiral. I can just tell you're playing the game wrong, for mobility you have the dash jump, slide, and slide jump, dash jumping is basically chainable since the dash goes on CD while you're still in the air from the jump, and the slide jump is crazy fast. If someone is about to shoot you, you can just turn your mouse and insta-slide away. And if you were more mechanically creative you'd be dashing out of cover then sliding while spraying to kill most riflemen (the slide dodges their initial spray, which is what I'm doing on my admiral hardcore run with the item scarcity modifier, that or chaining cricket stun into kicks.

        there are maybe 1-2 spots with an actually good head glitch in the first level, even less after that. sitting back and plinking is so bad in this game, get good.

          You can't, especially when dealing with the constrained environments, you can temporarily expose your self at close range.
          Of course at long distances will you be able to strafe but that isn't the case in most encounters, also enemies like enforcers may as well see right through walls.

    Folks, there is currently a worrying number of negative reviews for Selaco from incels saying it's too hard but also not wanting to lower the difficulty because of their fragile egos.

    There are SEVEN difficulty levels and modifiers to make it easier/harder, too.

    My first playthrough was pretty tough, but I had an absolute blast.

    Tactical shooters are terrible, all of them, without exception, unless it's some kind of multiplayer experience.
    If the game doesn't embrace the fact that AIs are all awful and build the game around this limitation (like, for example, the more action-focused games such as classic Doom, new Doom, Serious Sam, etc.), then I won't even waste my time playing it.
    Oversmarting primitive AI routines that can't do the basics unless there's heavy scripting in each encounter is the kind of experience that only the most moronic of casuals who are impressed by any garbage will accept. If you're not playing with humans, then every element of tactics, stealth, etc., is pure exploit-based garbage.
    It also doesn't help that for some reason these games love to make enemies that have more HP than they should and don't react to the shots they take. There's nothing more fun than unloading several bullets into an enemy and having him keep walking as if nothing had happened, sometimes even shooting back at you, until he suddenly falls over like a rag doll because his HP has reached zero...
