I will never be not mad at SupCom 2, what a god damn travesty

I never played any SupCom, but my memory was that all games in the series were equally well received. What did 2 change?

There's only 3, and one of them is a standalone expansion to the first
2 changed pretty much everything about the game from the scale to the unique economy system to the tiered units and factories, everything about it is generic and the complete opposite of what was great about the first ones

Dumbed down casual shit with tiny maps. There's a good reason that Forged alliance still has 5x as many players just on steam. Who knows how many playing on FAF

Hotline Miami 2 was a strange case. It preserved everything great about the first game other than the gameplay, which was ruined by railroading. Dunno if that's enough to count as soulless.

I had a good time with Hotline Miami 2, fantastic soundtrack and an... interesting story.
But while I've replayed the first game a bunch of times, I've never once wanted to play the sequel again. The gameplay is just the same as the first but kind of worse. Didn't like the Vietnam levels, fricking WINDOWS, higher gun focus, huge levels.

The only one of those games I played was Sticker Star.
Everyone shits on Sticker Star, but it was a pretty decent game. Fun, even

State of Decay 2 despite most of the overall improvements. Not being able to roundhouse a zombie into the concrete, smash their heads into walls and run up their backs to pop them with a curbstomp frickin sucks. They also gutted the UI for some minimalist clearbox garbage.

It strips out the spooks from the original, has tedious backtracking in the marrow, has an even more moronic plot and sebastian is about 3 steps short of being mr mc-action-hero. It is the very definition of dumbed down and stripping out nearly all parts that made the original good.

    Literally Cataclysm
    >wow we put so much insane amount of work into revamping the world guys!
WHO ASKED, ALL WE NEEDED WAS A FEW MORE QUESTS IN LVL 50 ZONES NOT CSI: WESTFALL, INDIANA JONES OR RAMBO FIRST REDRIDGE

It was the beginning of the end. Brain rotten Retail players like to point out that there were pop culture references in the game before Cataclysm, which there were, but it went fricking way over the top after Cata.
It's memes and references all the way down.

Cata apologists make me sick, I still can't believe to this day that somebody signed off on all this 4th wall breaking pop culture garbage and handholding linear quest progression

Do spinoffs count? I've been thinking about Civilization: Beyond Earth lately. How disappointing it was.
It ended up just being a shitty reskin of Civ 5, but without the charm of progressing through history (aka the defining thing Civilization does). How do you just remove the core thing a franchise is known for.

Beyond earth was never aimed at the hardcore civ crowd.

Who was it aimed for? Genuinely asking because if it wasn't Civ fans I don't get it

it was meant to be baby's first civ which is why it is simplified. The civ crowd has a pretty srs bsns reputation so beyond earth was trying to be something different to grow the playerbase.

Bizarrely I think some parts of BE were more complicated (especially to strategy newbies) than V.
All resources being visible at the start of the game, and having nonsense sci-fi names, and being placed all over a weird "Tech Web" (instead of linear progression) is very unintuitive

I mean, with V, once you unlocked Iron you'd have an idea of what it's for (swords), same with Uranium (nukes). The frick is "Geothermal"
