I ask you about fantasy, you say it involves Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs. I ask you what they look like, and you say they're tall have pointy ears, they're short bulky miners, and they're muscular green guys with tusks. We are not the same.

if tolkien is about who is the best strongest smartest guys, elves are kind of the best guys, right? thankfully I think tolkien has more moral and textual depth than that lol.
Nelson Mandela was pretty cool, was he a mary sue? was Julius Caesar a mary sue?
tolkien elves are interesting. you just might have to hack them down to fit a 'everyone is equal' assumption

They're "not sues" only in the sense that they're well written and interesting. Besides that, they check every other box that could possibly be used to qualify something as a mary sue, including (especially) the fact that their history is intelligently designed to emphasize their grandeur, they are explicitly the main characters of their reality

The faculty or activity of imagining things, especially things that are impossible or improbable is legitimate fantasy.
I say this as someone who makes the effort to make his games coherent and cohesive, in terms of what's available to the players compared to what's in the world itself.
I also say this as someone with a burning disdain for "le ebin gazebo monster fight +5 muffin" 'humor'.
I yet still say this as someone who has been regularly told to rewrite what he doesn't like.
So learn what words mean, make your fricking game, and shut your fricking face.

      lol no
i don't have to spell this out either, it's fairly obvious if you look at the state at modern RPGs and D&D in particular. have you missed out on how orcs aren't evil anymore and how races can't even have stats or height associated with them anymore?

Funny, none of those things are true in my games.

Do you actually read modern fantasy, anon? For example, Brandon Sanderson's books - not commenting on the quality one way or another, but Sanderson is undeniably a big name in modern fantasy - are if anything too much about coherence and clearly defined rules and limits. Or if you're just talking about modern fantasy RPGs, then HYTNPDND? Because there are other games out there, and there, you know.

Yet another "problem that only exists if you insist on only playing D&D 5e with random people" thread
Man if only there was some kind of very obvious solution to this

      Anonymous

No, you have to buy D&D, buy all of its erratas and expansions, fix everything that sucks, then give D&D all the credit for the fun and good things and good times you had.
Then, when you see anyone out of a handful of people on a tiny portion of the internet say anything bad about D&D, you have to vehemently deny its occurrence and attack the validity of the poster, you have to exonerate D&D of any relation to that bad thing it was used for, despite D&D being responsible for all the good things it's used for.

Not playing D&D is not an option.

Name 5 (five) examples for serious and legitimate fantasy. Be specific.

      Anonymous

Idk what "legitimate" is but I know fantasy that takes itself seriously.
      The Black Company
      Eragon
      The Zothique Cycle
      The Hobbit
      Deltora Quest

        Anonymous

Eragon is shit as a story for internal concsistency, particularly as you get to the third book in the series where the main character on a random whim plucks a flower and turns it into living gold despite the books showing that something as simple as lighting a fire can kill you or mispronouncing a word can spiral out into uncontrollable side effects, or that scene where the main character runs into some nameless hermit who casually uses magic without words in a setting where some of the most powerful and skilled mages say that that’s a terrible idea that will kill you.

          Anonymous

I didn't say it was necessarily good. It does, however, take itself seriously, and thats what made it enjoyable for me to read. The Eragon POV stuff by the third book was fairly tiresome imo because of the magic "system" being pushed to its extremes but the Roran POV chapters were excellenet throughout the series.

As someone who grew up in rural Appalachia these descriptions sound realistic.

Your problem is morons who cannot into internal consistency. Any random spawn of someone’s imagination could be very interesting in a fantasy story of it was consistent in how it was portrayed and fleshed out enough.

OP is obviously a toadlicker, but I think it is interesting that we have had Game of Thrones on TV, followed by more Game of Thrones, followed by more LOTR, followed by Wheel of Time. Then there's the Witcher, and a DND movie. All of these had their own issues, but we live in a golden age for commonly available fantasy. It is no longer the domain of books, and not even just the domain of video games. It's nice to see it gain some pop cultural legitimacy, like how science fiction did. I would like the genre to be more competently produced, and I suppose that's true for most TV these days, but if you want to see someone swing a sword at a dragon you can, and that's nice.

NTA. Game of Thrones and Witcher are actually good. Wheel of Time and Rangs are easy to criticize but also enjoyable (especially for someone who isn't familiar with the source material). You're an actual pseud, all people are player characters, and some of those player characters choose to be pseuds.

Yes. Realism sucks and is boring. I don't want to read a book to experience anything remotely resembling IRL. I want to escape to someplace fantastical, because literally everything about life and being alive is miserable and shit. Frick realism and frick everyone who likes it. Especially Tolkien. He was a hack and we'd be better off if he died in the trenches.
