Stadium 2 doesn't need Crystal to be the best

BW2 with platinum is the best

That makes no sense anon. Stadium 2 is built as an expansion to GSC, BW2 and Platinum have no connection.

      >just buy a whole other game on a whole other console!

So the game doesn't offer a complete experience by itself

Crystal is better than GS but not by much.

It offers quite different experience from other Pokemon games, that's for sure. Instead of focusing on plot and pushing through narrative, GSC was focused more on player-driven narrative, daily events and all the small events and activities going on. It's more akin to MMORPGs or Gacha games with how it wants player to play it, but build into shell of single-player jrpg.

Is it "the best" ? I don't even know what is "the best". Bu it's a game that is doing something vastly different than all other mainline games and some people are appreciating it. Bonus points for pretty aesthetics and random details that were put into the game just to make world more alive.

That's a big reason. It's also the last Pokemon game made before TPC was created and the series became an annual merchandise selling machine. It's the last game Game Freak developed for its own sake as an RPG based on the games they liked to play, it's the last game directed by Tajiri, and what they thought would be the ultimate Pokemon games.

Philosophical crap aside, it's just a game that I love to go back to and play a bit every day, as you mentioned. Out of all the regions Johto feels like a place to come back to instead of a backdrop to some anime end of the world plot that you just run through and put the game down afterwards. I still raise new teams all the time to take the various Stadium 2 cups, it's a lot of fun despite the grind.

I think few would claim it is the best, as it is clear general QoL and more content improved for a time. Which in turn needs the player to be special and events to escalate.

But as often is the case with smaller older projects there was a more clear driving goal behind the game. More so than Kanto I think Johto does a better job at selling its world, better grasp on the tech and the ground work done allowed them to more carefully craft it. A rural and clam place with minor creeping industrialisation. Walking through a dirt track to your nearest town is something kids actually did and depending on the age they may have gone bug catching. New pokemon being hard to find is not good game design for a speedrun, but is for making a kid dump hours into the game and form an attachment from their trial. The team really put their childhood into the game. You and Johto really aren't the centre of the world but for the time there was a lot to engage with.

Gen 3 on had to be different. They couldn't just sell their lived experience forever, it needed a format to excite people but be easy to produce. I see elements on Gen 2 creep back in like more focus on player freedom, but the mainline series will never be quaint again.

to add to this, in Gen 1 it was way too easy to avoid shitmon with how accessible and good mons like Nido, Gyarados and snorlax were. and because the game had fricked up mechanics, the best mons were even better
Gen 1 feels like a few charactermons and a lot of shitmons. Gen 2 feels like you are in a world of shitmons and rare basedmons

The things is that with how Gen 2 mechanics worked as soft power equalizer, the "shitmons" (I really fricking hate this term) were still pretty valid to use. Sure Ledian may be weaker than Dragonite in vacuum, but if you compare Ledian with stat experience, badge stat boosts, badge type boosts and being controlled by human being with brain vs Naked Dragonite controled by AI written for Gameboy Color, it's not that big of disadvantage.
GSC did great job of making rare Pokemon feel special but also did not penalized player for sticking to early game bros. Modern Pokemon games struggle hard with both these things.

I feel like some of the stuff in gen 1 vs 2 is one step forward 1 step back.
Gen 1 the AI was dumber, and the game in general literally hands you much more powerful easy to get encounters and gifts in gen 1 and the boss battles seem better thought out with brock having a shitmon with bind and high defense low special defense. VS gen 2 where the good mons are all more hidden and the falkner fight seems much more poorly designed with the idea that you would over level him by the time you got there and that rockey and muscles were supposed to be crutches for fighting what they saw as 2 harder boss fights

Yes, the powerful Pokemon are balanced by being late into the game and taking a while to evolve, you need to invest way more to make them work. The early game being filled with weak Pokemon makes perfect sense, it's unironically built like an RPG.
But modern Pokemon has conditioned players to want their ace team of choice before the second gym, and they want effortless ways to max their stats out too. They call it "QoL", I call it the soul and weight being drained out of the game.

But HGSS does all that better

Crystal has actual animations though. Emerald, DPPt, and HGSS have two frames and rotate between those two frames to gove the impression of an animation. It's not until Gen 5 that we see more than two frames.

For me it's the contrast between it and the next gen.
Absolutely zero reason why animated sprites, brighter palette, a day/night cycle, days of the week and even a battle tower should've been included in Ruby and Sapphire on release instead of being rehashed into the money grab Emerald (and not to mention how much capabilities the Jap version that had features that wouldn't be brought back untill gen 4).Even as a kid I felt letdown when the the next gen was one step forward and two steps back.

RS does have a Battle Tower. My main problem with it is that unlike the Battle Tower in Emerald's Battle Frontier it doesn't have open level, only Lv. 50 and Lv. 100 modes. This was a problem in Crystal too though: you can only select increments of Lv. 10. It's also more boring in Crystal since it's all stall and Snorlax, but it seems most people on this site don't actually play in Battle Facilities anyway.

To be fair, I don’t think most hardcore GSC fans would defend its competitive scene. Battle Facilities also have a history of being RNG shitshows that require meme setups or an absence of shitmon; they don’t appeal to everyone. Might be a hot take, but I think having a more forgiving battle tower was one of the few things SwSh did right. It really opened up team building.

Nostalgia and the novelty of Kanto. That's pretty much it, Johto itself is pretty lackluster outside of Ecruteak

Not much to say that hasn’t already been said. Crystal is the peak of GSC. Gen 2 added a ton of appreciated features on top of Gen 1’s solid, albeit buggy, base. Gen 2 pokemon designs feel right at home with the original 151, and they contrast the edgier, industrialized themes of Gen 1 well. Crystal also plays like a dream. It’s the last time a pokemon game really gave the player the freedom to set their own pace. You can absolutely fly through Gen 2, but you can also take your time with the variety of content presented to you. It doesn’t bog you down with story details or cutscenes. The game looks and sounds fricking fantastic; it’s the only time Game Freak has ever impressed me with presentation.

If I had to take a guess. Vastly superior selection of early game mons.
You can catch Phanphy and Teddiursa right away for example, like before the first gym badge and it actually requires you to either get extremely lucky or use a gastly with mean look. Teddiursa is especially difficult to catch because gastly doesn’t learn any moves that harm it in early levels. You can also get sneasel in ice path iirc. I don’t remember what other lategame mons are changed to be caught significantly early though I do know larvitar is still locked to endgame.
You also give up a few good mons for this, on the top of my head mareep, vulpix, and remoraid aren’t available in crystal and have to be traded.
Either way, IMO I wouldn’t call crystal better than HGSS but it does have some nice things that makes it worthwhile to play if you enjoy mainline pokemon.
