I always use cheats on single player games so I can frick around and build my own narrative in the story, and talk a shit ton on multi-player games. I never befriend anyone, but I like improving my teamwork and social skills via games like Squad or Arma

Same. Who enjoys this pointless strenuous shit? I‘ve just resorted to scrolling trough tiktok and shitposting for effortless dopamine.

    >fun challenge
I no longer love difficult action games but I do enjoy overcoming puzzles and planning out strategies
    >unique ways to telling stories and world building
I still think that video games are unexplored as an art form and have the potential to be grander than just games
    >escape from reality
This used to be the big reason i got into MMOs but now it's non-existent but occasionally I get so absorbed into a world that I can forget about my problems IRL
    >a fun way to keep up with friends
This used to be the case but i quit WoW a while ago and what friends I have left are all normies who haven't played video games in a long time. But when I do get the opportunity to play it's fun

Like it's an active medium, but there are plenty of options which let you switch your brain off

      >escape from reality
Ye, you escape the one in which you suck only to end up in another where you suck exactly as much or even more... I mean, if this is ccoperate game than youre going to have people who play better than you obviously. And realization that people around me do better than me by investing less time and effort crushed me... I guess you are doomed to do bad in everything you try after all if you have been born intellectually inferior (below averege)

it's fun if i play with friends

it was like that for me too until a few years ago, since I was very focused on playing only the trendy games (looking back, it was probably FOMO) and always in the worst difficulties to prove to the world that I was a "real gamer" (and I didn't even have friends who cared about that sort of thing), so it all became a hunt for a vague trophy that only satisfied an imaginary ego that I projected onto a pseudo virtual person on my xbox and steam accounts.

I went into "frick it" mode, I went back to playing all the construction games I loved, all the puzzles I thought were cool, all the stupid platform and rogue games that I hadn't played in over a decade and now I can say that playing is fun again.

As for sabotaging fun because it's a useless thing, I always try to remember that every boomer spends 80% of his life watching shit on TV since no one in real life spends that much time being productive, so i give myself total right to have fun.

I play what I enjoy. I'm born in 1993 and I got to grow up during the golden age of vidya. I play games from the 90s up to 2010. Some of them I played before, some of them I missed.

"golder age"? What are you talking about? How exactly are games made then better than those of a modern time? Modern games have better graphics, better and wider spectrum of mechanics and interactions, sounds are not limited to those that can be produces with synthesizer etc... I dont get you, retrogrades.

        >better graphics at the cost of shit tier plot and lack of gameplay
yeah, welcome to modern day video games. They can't even do remasters properly nowadays without sacrificing gameplay content for it, video games nowadays are gravitating towards dumb c**ts that jerk off to maximization of high end GPUs that quadrupled in memory and clock speed within the past 8 years, just soulless, enriched tech demos with nothing to show for

guess we need some artistic nerds to bridge the gap between tech demo and soulful gameplay

No need, just look at stuff like stardew valley, it's absolutely doable, there's no need to go for peak polygon count, if there's love in it you'll feel it

It's a hobby, if you don't want to game just don't. Usually the cure for gaming fatigue is just taking a break, focusing on neglected chores or goals, lets your mind reorient and treat gaming as more of a leisurely thing than a commitment.

video game narratives like elden ring are dope as hell though. I wonder if the time investment on production is worth the profits. Great game.

I kinda relate, I quit vidja largely when I was 16.

Before that i was really really addicted, like skipping weeks of school addicted.
Back then I thought of it as a fun mental challenge, I mostly played strategy games and stuff.

But nowadays I feel the same as you annon, I think I just snapped out of it when i realised it was just imaginary points and a artificial sense of achievement.

I tend to try stuff I've never played before, when I get tired I just go take a nap and not do anything else since that would mean my mind is not getting the rest it needs. Call me a gay or whatever but I've been enjoying PSP Project Diva lately and I have never been into rhythm games before.
