Delayed attacks are just extra openings but they’re irritating because they go against all your instincts. When a boss is taking 2 hours to wind up an attack you should be getting a charged R2 in. Some of Sekiros design philosophy carried over in the sense you should be playing aggressively and building posture damage for a stagger, souls oldgays get filtered because they expect their instincts to carry over

The bosses can be a pain in the ass but it’s stupid how people act like ER bosses have no openings or are too hard “even for souls veterans” when it’s a different game and they absolutely have plenty of openings, they’re just not all where you’re used to looking for them. The game wasn’t balanced around summons or bleed it was balanced around aggressive posture breaking which you can do at level 1 with a club

Using spirit ashes, summons, bleed, etc. is perfectly fine, but people who refuse to use those and then complain “BOO HOO IT’S NOT MY FAULT I’M A SHITTER ITS BECAUSE THE GAME WAS BALANCED AROUND SPIRIT ASHES FOR CASUALS” should relentless bullied because that’s absolutely not true and if you don’t want games to be further dumbed down for browns with 2 digit IQ’s you should not let their narratives take hold here, especially when there’s a perfectly reasonable easy mode they refuse to use and incorrectly insist the game was balanced around. Take Neverknowsbest that video essayist who made a whole video crying about chuds being mean to SBI for example, he also made a video spending an hour crying about how ER is too hard for “souls veterans tm” like him. These are the kind of gays crying about it and ERchads need to bully them more so souls newGODs can go into the DLC correctly understanding the boss mechanics and how to engage with them

This is easiest to see when someone does a second run from scratch. I played the whole game when it released and haven't touched it until a month ago to prep for the expansion. Every single boss except 3 or 4 I one shot this time (for some reason radahn beat the ever living shit out of me this time), and it's not cause of level or anything. It's just player experience. God I wish sekiro would come to PC. I want to play through that again.

I made this thread for that post but I didn’t want the OP to be too long

Imagine delaying an attack so hard I'm just eviscerating and spilling your guts on the ground and you're dead and I built a grave for you and I put your body 10 feet under before you finally let your attack go from beyond the grave and instantly kill me
Frick off moron, this is dogshit, you never see Team Ninja do that shit and this is why they make the better games

They don’t instantly kill you if you dodge after getting your hits in moron

It was definitely built around ash summons giving players extra breathing room. There's barely any sort of predictability to the delayed attacks in Elden ring and then there's the most absurd input reading in the series on top of that to make sure that just because you thought you had an opening for once you didn't.

All of these are still present while using ashes but what became unlearnable can now be played around a bit. It's still quite challenging and really only anywhere close to the easiest in the series if you follow guides to become insanely broken (game gives you multiple respec items without much effort so it's easy to just go this route) but otherwise it's by far one of the most challenging in the series because you're always at a disadvantage fighting bosses solo.

        t. Probably died 80 times or something against Midir in DS3 my first time yet that boss fight was still leagues easier than ER bosses because I knew I was just being too impatient or fricking up dodging an attack rather than being unable to learn any sort of consistent attack/opening pattern.

Just because they’re too hard for you doesn’t mean they were designed to be used with spirit ashes, that myth is nothing but cope. The bosses have combo flowcharts instead of combos that are the same everytime like DS, they’ll react to what you do and you need to react in response. Like I’ve already explained you can absolutely destroy bosses just by aggressively attacking their posture with charged attacks to their openings so it’s absolutely moronic to think it was balanced with them chasing some Jellyfish around the arena in mind when they put so much effort into the complicated movesets

Spirit ashes, status effects like bleed and frost, just blocking with a heavy shield, are all valid ways to play the game and if you have fun with them you should, just stop acting like fromsoft is le forcing their veterans into easy mode

they arent "too hard", they're just disingenuous

they actively disengage the player in every way an action game can

they push you by every possible mechanism to just cheese them and utterly side step 95% of the difficulty

maybe they'll add some sort of boss that has an instant kill move, that'd be interesting!
finally a real challenge to the player, beyond what they have already delivered.

maybe they'll really switch it up and just make a boss that is truly unkillable, with infinite revival phases
just to spite the player's efforts, with no hidden secret or quest associated with it, in true elden ring fan fashion!

we'll finally get the unintelligible AI maze that we were promised before it's release

a truly and esoteric means by which to challenge the player, with billions of possible attack patterns and outcomes, each of which with different roll timings and defensive techniques, all of which will kill you in a handful of hits

Holy mind broken by a game women can beat on a dance pad

It really wouldn't be so bad if the game had animation cancel and the player didn't move at geriatric pace, as it is it feels like being dropped in a hack and slash game but with the constraints of the classic Dark Souls combat framework and it's just pushing the formula to breaking point. And even Fromsoft is aware of that given how the checkpoints have evolved as to not frustrate the player too much.

99% of the difficulty of elden ring is being locked into a dodge for a delayed attack, if you could ACTUALLY chain dodges the game would be a hundred times more approachable

If you play "legit" aka solo, no using guides, no magic, melee only ER is by far the hardest game in the series, makes Dark Souls look like a baby game.

If you play the way the devs intended aka use whatever tools available to you without looking stuff up or going out of your way to make the game easy then it still has challenging moments.

If you just look stuff up then yeah it's the easiest game in the series because of how OP you can become early on when you know where to go and how forgiving the game is when you die or go somewhere you shouldn't be.

They are harder actually, when rollslop isn't 2nd nature. Elden Ring is designed for people with rollslop as a second nature, so it's interesting there were so many new people.

thats a respectable amount, im a massive gay for the souls, but I banged my head against her for almost 2 weeks before I finally got it, solo no summons.

best boss they ever made, she's so fricking frustrating but never feels unfair, though the lifesteal+waterfowl combo is a bit rough until you truly git gud. the only time ive ever had that hard of a time was Artorias and that was mostly because I was a poorgay with a shit computer who didnt have money for a controller, so I did that shit on keyboard (no mouse because the patch didnt work correctly on my computer), which took me a good 8 hours straight and has permanently fricked my right wrist.

I always felt like different boss' are different peoples kryptonite, regardless of build. but she is just the epitome of a boss fight and anyone who first tried her without cheese deserves a fricking medal.

          what weapon did you use?

malenia I went through most of my catalogue of upgraded str weapons and even rerolled my character to dex to see if the extra speed would help, it didnt. I think I wound up finishing her with the grafted blade greatsword or whatever.

artorias I truly dont remember, but i'd guess either zwei or washing pole, those are the two weapons i remember using for the majority of my first run

I've beaten 95% of the bosses in Elden Ring, I like a lot of them, though the re-use of several of them makes me think they just wanted to see how many bosses they could fit into one game at a time.
That being said, most of them arent "hard" per say, but they are overly-reactionary, and there's evidence that whatever enemy/boss AI fromsoft used for ER is input reading directly from the controller and not the environment.
P.S: The fact that Malenia heals herself even if you block her without drawing blood is bullshit in my opinion, and I'm sure whoever got THAT mechanic approved jerks themselves to sleep every night just thinking about it.
