It's fine. Gamepass gets meme'd on for good reason but is a solid value. I thought I wouldn't get much use out of it because I have a gaming PC but there's enough things that are either console-only or just nicer to play on the couch that I have found it to be worth it. Plus unlike the PS5 you can actually fricking find one

Not really impressed with the gay pass. Had some good games early on then removed them. It's all lame indie games, or dead MS IP like gears. Just not good for me. If you look at most played games it's all racing and sports goyslop shit too.

Forza's the only good racing game until the next NFS comes out, and both are going to be on Gamepass with every new release.

You also have every Bethesda game, the whole Yakuza series, Sea of Thieves, No Man's Sky, The Witcher series, the Assassin's Creed series, The Batman Arkham games, Minecraft, and you get bonuses in multiplayer games like Warframe and Fortnite.

On that list, only two of them aren't available on PlayStation -- and Sea of Thieves sucks.
It always ends up like this. Some Xbox fan goes "I'm having fun!" and points to a bunch of multiplatform games. Yeah, you could also get those games and Sony's shit (which is hit or miss, but it's better than the fricking ZERO Microsoft is putting out) as well. That's why exclusives matter. If you can get everything and more on the competing platform, why wouldn't you just get that?

On paper it is slightly, but it doesn't play out in practice. Plenty of games run better on PS5, including Cyberpunk 2077. And even then the difference is so negligible it's not even worth paying attention to unless you're one of the Digital Foundry trannies.

Deathloop is a recent example where Series X version runs a bit better.
There are also a lot of backwards compatible 360 games that are a nice pristine 4k/60 now, meanwhile PS5 has no native PS3 back compat and never will

but at that point you're just buying a series x just to play 360 games, and ONLY 1/4 of the 360's library. I don't think that's worth it. You don't buy a nextgen console JUST to play lastlastgen games. It would be like buying an N64 to play NES games (hypothetically)

No, it plays almost every Xbox *One* game natively. It plays most of the 360 and OG Xbox games that people care about, but not all of them, since they had to go through and tweak and approve each one to make sure it emulates properly

nope. Go to wikipedia. Only 600 of the 2100 360 games are supported. And it's not native like the Xbox one. It works liek this:

                >put 360 game in xbox series
                >xbox uses the 360 disc as license to download a patched version of the game to play on the series
                >OG Xbox and Xbox 360 games require you to be online and to download GBs of ptaches to play the game, nothing is loaded from the disk
                >OG XBox and Xbox 360 are supported through emulation, not natively like with the Xbox One. Only 600 Xbox 360 games are supported, and only 60 OG Xbox games are supported.

Most of them a PC can play, though.
It's more about whether you already own those old Xbox games, or whether you want the optimized vanilla console experience. Like maybe the PC version of one of those 360 games doesn't support controllers and rumble and you don't really want to jump through hoops to mod it and get them working, you're content with just kicking back with your 4k/60 vanilla Oblivion or whatever, on the Xbox.

Why not both, though? Most of my time on my Series X is spent on newer, current-gen games, yet I still find there to be some value in having 4k/60 Gears 2 and 3 that you can't get anywhere else, and 4k RDR 1, etc

I tend to use my PS5 first, partly because the games are cheaper where I live. (Not the console, though.) So I use the Xbox Series X for exclusives, which it currently doesn't fricking have, so that's why it doesn't get used.

On top of playing good old glory in 4k you can also play the best version of the Microsoft first party games that are optimized for the best experience. For example a game like Ori and the will of the wisps was optimized for Xbox one x and then with the smart delivery function it was also optimized for series X even if you bought the game on previous console. It's clear that Microsoft wants to work on software preservation and it's a thing that i love.

If you want to play 8th gen games, get a PS5 for the PS4 versions or just get a PC (a 1050Ti can play all 8th gen games). Neither the PS4 or XBONE had any games so their BC doesn't matter. The Series is worth it solely for the 360 backwards compatibility (not even the OG Xbox since only 60 games are supported).

That's the real issue with the Series consoles, especially the S but the X still suffers from it. The file sizes can be twice as large as PS5 file sizes so even though the Series X has 200gb more than the PS5, the PS5 ends up storing more games.

Ever since the Series S/X update it's been alright. A decent rig (3060ti or better) will get higher FPS at 1080p, but that's without RTX.

Series X is worth it right now if you don't have a better or equivalent PC already, It's better for older games without native PC controller support like Oblivion and Morrowind if you genuinely want to play those games with a controller.

Microsoft is selling the Series X at a loss. This has always been a known fact.

To be honest, a 3060ti is a little weaker than the Series X unless it's paired with a good CPU like the i7 11700k or better.

              I own both.

Cyberpunk 2077, which is still an unoptimized mess in a lot of areas, definitely runs better. Could be because they prioritized the console port over PC just like they did with The Witcher 3 at launch, or it could be Xbox's cooling shit. No idea.

eh, im not at home but 3080, i9, 32 gigs of ddr5. 3 x qhd 144 fps monitors, which i regret. should of gone a 4k and had one qhd on the side instead.
also got a water cooled dual 1080ti as a back up i should probably set up in the living room so theres something to do. currently a few hours away tho on a laptop.
                >mfw i thought 4k on a 14 inch screen would be better then choosing the qhd 120 fps screen.

Runs well on performance mode, RTX is 30 locked so I don't care enough to even try. Game is still Cyberpunk though and no matter how much people shill it cause of the anime it's still really buggy despite being "fixed" like those disingenuous liars say. I've had bugs both small and pretty big hamper my experience causing me to have to reload saves a couple of times, but most bugs are visual or small enough to ignore. I notice some shadows and some reflections don't render right while driving around fast and overall on 1080p some spots/texture do look a bit foggy. Overall it's runs well enough on performance mode, just doesn't help that I think the game is pretty ugly overall and idk if any of my complaints are due to playing it on console, but until the game is 5 dollars on PC like I bought it on Xbox I'm not going to see the difference between the PC and console builds

I don't mind 30 if it's the only option but if you have the choice for more then why would you ever pick it? Cyberpunk is not a good looking game and losing that much performance wise to make the streets look nicer while driving at night makes no sense. Environments are still dull, character models are still ugly, npc animations are still lifeless, and the overall visual upgrade is miniscule whenever you're not directly in from of some neon lights at night

The people look like shit. Last night was in Panam quest, drink a booze V goes through motions doesn't pick up the bottle holds nothing. Ride with that River wade cop or whatever his name is, we slam into a car with someone in it driving to a quest area in which the drivers starts moving only to slam into some concrete on the side. Pick up some quest items like 4 times cause they keep respawning.

I don't know wtf they put in that 40gb patch but it wasn't many bug fixes. All the videos hyping up this "return" are a joke. "massive cyberpunk patch YOU GOTTA CHECK IT OUT!" Tier moronation. Some of the game is still fun like side missions and the characters involved but overall game feels 2017 tier with meh graphics on the XSX.

Really depends on what you play. My PC isn't that old, but struggles on the same games and settings my XSX does for the most part. Most of the issues I have are resolved by fricking with the settings per-game.

i would agree on rather choosing ps5 though and not because of any shitty GaaS deals, but because ps5 is getting jailbroken while xbox isnt so you can save money through piracy on the PS5.

Since neither console has exclusives, if the PS5 is better on multiplats than the Series X then it's worth it since it has better multiplats + jailbreak. Otherwise just get a Series X.

The Xbox Series X is the best value in gaming right now if you don't care about portable handheld gaming devices. It's the most powerful console on the market right now at the cheapest price. You absolutely cannot build a gaming desktop that will outperform the Xbox Series X at this price point. In my opinion building a gaming desktop is only worth it if that's your absolute preferred platform and you're either okay with low spec gaming or have more money than brains. The only reason I didn't jump ship from Sony is that I already own games that play on Sony devices. It didn't make sense to switch.

I have both a series x and ps5 and am surprised at how much quieter the series x is.
I can't have a ps5 in my room due to the coil whine and fan noise, but I can't hear the series x at all.
I also noticed that the series x runs games cooler than the ps5. So while the ps5 does run games more stable at 60 when it's cool; when it gets hotter it drops more frames than a series x.
Maybe I got lucky with the xbox and got one with low noise and the reverse with the ps5.

I have a good PC, but I bought a Series S on a whim for $260 and I actually really love it. Surprisingly great performance, and it's awesome to just have a little gamepass box. Also badass how it runs OG Xbox and 360 games upscaled and at a better FPS.

They officially said no more are coming due to licensing, they've finished all the games they could get. We don't know if that will change with any of the new acquisitions though, maybe Activision had a few they were sitting on.

so what are you paying $500 for? the ability to play lost odyssey and rdr? last i heard, last odyssey and rdr actually run fine on the new xenia canary build but even if they didn't i can't wrap my head around buying a console for an open world game when the genre is so overdone now.

Statistically, yes. Most comparison vids show Xbox winning in some fashion, and in cases where it doesn't in the comparison, it does after the developer patches it a week later.

Japanese games tend to run better on the PS5 because they optimize for it. It's the same issue the One X had where it was stronger but Japanese games typically performed worse. Elden Ring ran better on PS5 for a recent example.

how was multiplat performance of the One X and PS4 Pro? I couldn't find any site that showed native resolutions and framerates. I ended up getting a PS4 Pro because jailbreak.

The One X is better in just about every multiplat comparison. There might be a few outliers that are PS-first but the vast majority has One X as the lead in resolution and performance.

Also, Bamco uses Xboxes as their lead SKU for development, so your mileage may vary with what anon said.

Digital foundry found that Xbox typically has a higher resolution bound on Elden Ring that causes more frequent frame dips but VRR smooths it out and the FPS was fixed in patches as well. They said if you have a VRR TV that Series X is currently the best way to play ER since it doesn't have the microstutters the PC version has as well.

oh. I could've gotten a One X for much cheaper than the PS4 Pro. I love the performance, but the always-online DRM crap and lack of jailbreak means I will never buy Xbox. Don't like the own nothing be happy aspect of it.

I doubt I will buy playstation either since even the PS is getting harder to jailbreak and being more dependent on DRM. I might aswell just stick with older systems since modern games don't interest me.

So 4K alone is worth upgrading? I mean I will eventually anyways but graphics aren't super important for me

The series S will be more expensive than the Series X in the long run since you're buying only digital games which will never drop in price vs used Series X games that could be bought for $5.

                no it isn't. You still

                >NEED a MS account to use an Xbox
                >NEED to be online to set up a new Xbox (paperweight when servers shut down)
                >NEED to be online to set the console offline (And you can ONLY do it 3 times a year) and you STILL need to connect online after a few days
                >NEED to be online to download patches to play XBONE/XSX crossplay games
                >NEED to be online to download and play OG/360 games

they only fixed the Xbox One BC, nothing else. The PS also has shitty online requirements for stuff like trophies, and some games like NFS 2015 won't work without online, but you don't NEED online to FRICKING PLAY YOUR PS.

                > it just sounds like you want to pirate games more than you care about running fun apps

jailbraking does way more than just pirating games. It will be the ONLY way for you to use your consoles one the servers shut down. You can also do things like

                >still buy the game but install the DLCs and patches as FPKGs without pirating
                >get some nice fanmade patches like the 60fps patch for elden ring
                >run linux and play PC games
                >and even play fricking PC games on linux on console.
                >run emulators for some other consoles like Dolphin

You're getting your console out of its cage and start owning the console you payed for. You can't defend being the b***h of Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo and support being thrown around like a dog.

This is a concern but not a super significant one. Xbox 360 live has been going for 17 years and has no end in sight, and they have plans to support Xbox One live for a long time, by allowing Series games to be streamed to the One after all the native Xbox One ports have stopped.
You will probably have spent multiple times the cost of a Series X on PC upgrades by the time its online support ends in like 25 years or whatever.

it's a problem that shouldn't even exist. I don't mind online being a requirement for trophies or online multiplayer, but requiring online to USE THE FREAKING CONSOLE is just fricking stupid. It's a ticking time bomb. Why would you support a design flaw that shouldn't even exist? Yes it's not a problem right now, but it eventually WILL happen.

Not everybody wants to consoom new consoles. Some just like the older ones. I can safely go back to my PS1, PS2, OG Xbox, Xbox 360, NES, SNES without this fricking issue and if those consoles die, it's not because MS/SOny/Nintendo pulled the plug but for natural causes.

                MS recently did this

                >Removes the requirement for the disc version of most Xbox One games to check for an internet connection
                >It’s a win for video game preservationists and anyone else who imagined running recent Xbox games in the far future without worrying about the status of any remote servers

Doesn't seem like MS has any intent to brick the Xbox One when its online service ends (which could be a decade or more away)

I don't, but the fact that factory reseting means requiring inline to set it up is wrong.

I don't think you get my point. My whole point in all this is that people shouldn't be dependent on a third party for their consoles to work. I have a PS/PS2/PS3/PS4 and I never needed to do anything with Sony to use them. Sure I could play online and get trophies, but those aren't required for a console to work. I bought them from Sony but after that I used these consoles without having to do anything with Sony servers.

So bottom line: Online should not be a requirement, only an option for a console.

The key thing to remember here is that eventually the industry will try to push cloud streaming down our throats and kill off dedicated hardware so whenever that happens all bets are off as to how long Microsoft decides to keep those servers up for.

Do you think Valve will be in on that scheme?
If not, how will other industry giants manage to compete when locally installed Steam games still offer a consistently better experience than streaming?
How will they get away with erasing the esports scene, when hardcore pro players won't accept any amount of added input lag?

I don't think Valve will want anything to do with it because of how disastrous it'd be for them. The issue is going to be when every publisher has their own subscription streaming service, like how Netflix once was consolidated but then splintered when everyone else wanted a piece of the pie.

If you look at it, all 3 consoles actually have games you can cloud stream on them. Microsoft is pushing it the hardest and packaging the ability to cloud stream games like Elden Ring into Game Pass Ultimate, Sony has the PS3 games streaming on PS Plus, and the Switch has a lot of cloud ports from lazy publishers that don't want to port their games properly. We also have big publishers like Ubisoft and EA offering their own subscription services that also have cloud streaming as an option.

Eventually every major publisher will all want you to pay monthly to access their catalog and we've seen companies remove games from Steam in the past so they could potentially remove all of their games when they do this too, leaving Valve in an awkward spot where it exists as a hub for smaller publishers or indie games, assuming all the smaller publishers aren't bought up by larger corporations by then. Every company trying to make their own launchers and storefronts was bad enough but the push for streaming could be catastrophic for consumers. Thank god it's years away.

This is nightmarish to think about. No more downloading games to your local machine. You always have to steam them. So fricking weak, and it’s completely plausible. When that day comes Xbox and PlayStation will probably just be apps on your tv too; no more home consoles.

                >When that day comes Xbox and PlayStation will probably just be apps on your tv too; no more home consoles.
Microsoft is already preparing for that.
                https://www.xbox.com/en-US/apps/xbox-app-for-tv

Their home consoles could be discontinued by 2030 depending on how much money Microsoft wants to throw at this. The FCC is already looking into making 100mbps the bare minimum that ISPs can offer and are considering 1gbps after that, so it becomes a question of if they can have enough servers near consumers so that the latency is tolerable. Game Pass is already an amazing value, get rid of the $300 and $500 buy in and even the most diehad Snoy might pay $1 to sub for a month to play Fallout 5. That's how Microsoft wins in the long term, it's unprecedented levels of both convenience and affordability, and all your progress is already synced between PC, Xbox, and your Phone if you use their apps so it'll end up having Switch-like functionality. Once they figure out the latency issue they'll never make another console that they have to sell at a loss again and your average consumer will eat it up, they'll frick all of us.

I wouldn't actually mind the ability to stream games if it was like $15 a month and the country I was living in had the infostructure necessary for seamless 4K gameplay with zero input lag.

I'd have a shitty PC for work and I'd never have to buy hardware again.

By the time that's a thing, though we'll probably have AR glasses/contacts where we can create virtual screens as big as we want.

                >if it was like $15 a month
This is exactly what Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is, and the main value is Xbox and PC games that you install locally, the cloud streaming is just an added bonus on top.
The streaming is currently limited to a somewhat soft looking, low-bitrate 1080p but it will presumably become 4k once it's out of beta

I was PS4/PC last gen and feel no reason to get a PS5 right now. I got a Series S used ridiculously cheap from a coworker and I'll probably just use it and PC for a long time. For the past year I've been coasting on the constant $1 1 to 3 month GP offers.

series s has 364gb of free storage. you can take that up with 3 or 4 games. it's a meme machine. you're tied to the xbox store unless you're using retroarch to emulate older titles but all consoles are like that.

Think it's a good option if you're still using a 1080p TV and don't care what pixels are and don't plan to upgrade.
            >games outside the xbox store
Not officially, like you can't put Steam on it or anything. If you put in the effort you can make it run some emulators for old non-Xbox consoles and some old PC games though

But don't forget it supports cheap USB hard drives. Like you could add a 1TB for $50. If you play a bunch of newer X/S enhanced games then you would have to copy them back and forth frequently, but if it's past-gen games then they can just run off that hard drive no problem

              >Think it's a good option if you're still using a 1080p TV and don't care what pixels are and don't plan to upgrade.
it is because it's often on sale for $250 and you can probably pick it up used for $200 or less and it might drop to that price for a new console on black friday but you have to be willing to shuffle around games and delete them to install new ones. which if you're buying the poorgay xbox, with a poorgay tv, you probably have poorgay internet so that might be a deal breaker unless you want to shuffle games on and off an external drive which is pretty annoying.

it's a console where you get what you pay for. you get a great bargain but you make up for it with minor annoyances like having to manage your storage and not being able to use discs. but if you ever upgrade the storage with one of microsofts $200 expansion cards you were better off buying a series x or ps5 instead. if someone is okay with monitoring storage and sticking with 1080p gaming, it's a great value though for sure.

I still use a 900p monitor with a PS4 Pro lol but despite that I still want a higher output resolution so it downscales better. Yes. The Series X is a perfectly fine choice. PC gaming is a meme unless you're super into strategy games that NEED a mouse and keyboard to play.

Imo yes it's worth it, but it's a lot MORE worth it if you already have a library of past-gen Xbox games. Series X can play a large number of them, many with res and framerate enhancements. Like a 720p/30 game from 360 can become a pristine 4k/60.
If you're starting fresh and it would be your first Xbox, a PC might be a better investment.
Also, if you're interested in 4k UHD Blu-rays, be aware that there's something wrong with the Series X disc drive or software that prevents some discs from being played properly, and there's been no word from MS on a fix. PS5 disc model has no such issues.

If you're a poorgay living in some third world country just buy a prebuilt PC. Games will be cheaper plus you don't have to pay for online. How much do you care about Sony's exclusive franchises? Because the Series X seems to be accumulating a slight general performance edge over the PS5 in multiplat comparisons, while also being 50€ cheaper, so it has that going for it. More frames for your buck.

how much better are the Series X multiplats compared to the PS5? The native resolutions and framerates are higher? I don't like the PS5 but at least that has jailbreak.

              Anonymous

It's not a dramatic difference. This is a competitive generation where sometimes the PS5 and Series X versions of a game are exactly the same, or sometimes the PS5 is the one that does a little better. But I think the instances of Series X winning have now outnumbered them.
It will be something like if a game has an unlocked high framerate mode intended for VRR, Series X might hit 100fps while PS5 is in the 80s.
Or if they use dynamic resolution, Series X might stick closer to native 4k while PS5 drops to 1800p.

Series X also plays nicer with gaming monitors, like it can do 1440p and 120fps and VRR all at once, while the PS5 can only do 1 or 2 of those at the same time

                Anonymous

thanks. So it's not like how the Xbox/360 multiplats were 2x better than the PS2/PS3 multiplats? Because I have bad memories from GTA IV PS3 looking terrrible.

                Anonymous

Yeah. And nothing like how the PS4 had a big advantage over the Xbox One out of the gate, there was nothing MS could do to close the gap (besides launch the One X, 4 years later) and eventually devs just gave up on trying to make base Xbox One games run smoothly

                Anonymous

So basically nowadays with both xonsoles being just PCs there isn't too much difference in multiplats, and the differences get more marginal every gen. I'd take a PS5 with jailbreak over the always-online Series X then. (although I'm best skipping this gen completely)

Even the 360 didn't look that much better than PS3 multiplats. Only the Xbox utterly destroyed the PS2.

Probably smart, if there's no Sony exclusives you really want then a PC would make both of them redundant.
Another noteworthy PS5 benefit, if you were to swing that way, is that it can be cheaper to expand the SSD storage. It supports expansion from a bunch of different SSD brands that compete and drive prices down. Yesterday I ordered a 1TB drive to expand my PS5 for just $100, meanwhile Xbox only has the one brand of Seagate cards where the 1TB is $220 -____-

                Anonymous

but for the PS5 the internal SSD is required right? So if the internal SSD dies the PS5 will be a paperwight? does the series X also have built-in storage? aren't both the PS5's and Series X's upgradable storage M.2? how can the Xbox's be more expensive?

                Anonymous

Both of them have built-in internal SSDs. Series X is 1TB while PS5 is 825GB for some reason.
Series expansion cards get away with being more expensive by using this proprietary design that is ONLY made by Seagate, probably with some weird price fixing contract with MS. They're more expensive even though they're also somewhat slower than the generic M.2 drives that work on PS5

I bought one recently to finally shut my friend up who's been hounding me to get one for like a year. I didn't think I'd care much for it, but it's growing on me. It's super quiet, runs everything great, controller is a welcome improvement on the already best one on the market, gamepass is a surprisingly good deal ect. It simply works, which is sometimes more than you can say for PC. I say this has someone who started out very young as a PC gamer and has alternated primarily between PC and Xbox over the past 20 years. My PC's hardware is from 2016, when building a competent rig cost maybe a third what it does now. If you're not disgustingly wealthy and don't want to spend $1600 on a GPU alone, the XSX is the way to go.

Also it looks a lot less awkward in-person than it does in pictures. I have mine up on my table just because I like its black obelisk simplicity.

Yes there's a difference. One X can only boost the resolution, it was better at pushing more pixels than pushing more frames. It won't change a framerate target.
FPS Boost for older games is something exclusive to Series, because much better CPU. It can do both.

Kinda funny how MS put in all that work to make some amount of backward compatibility across all Xbox gens happen, yet it was all so convoluted that half this thread is spouting wrong info about what the Series X can or can't play
